Revealing the Key to Nigeria's Economic Advancement; Medicinal Cannabis As a Catalyst By Prince Ugo Mike Enwerem, Numerous African nations are striving to liberate themselves from the lingering effects of colonialism that have historically shaped their economies and governance. This aspiration for independence stems from a combination of economic hardships and a desire for self-determination. Many countries across the continent are making notable progress in moving away from the shadows of their colonial past. The motivations behind this shift are complex, encompassing economic struggles, a rising sense of national pride, and a commitment to self-sufficiency. A critical factor driving African nations to reevaluate their colonial connections is the economic decline experienced by countries like Nigeria. As Africa's largest economy, Nigeria has witnessed a significant contraction in its GDP, resulting in increased poverty and unemployment rates, which have fueled widespread dissatisfaction among its citizens. This economic downturn has underscored the necessity for Nigeria to seek alternative pathways to revitalize its economy and achieve sustainable growth. In recent years, Nigeria has faced a multitude of economic challenges. The decline in global oil prices has severely affected the nation’s revenue, as oil exports account for a substantial share of Nigeria's income. This heavy reliance on a single commodity has rendered the economy susceptible to fluctuations in international markets. Furthermore, Nigeria grapples with internal issues such as corruption, inadequate infrastructure, and rapid population growth, all of which have further strained its economic stability. Mali serves as another example of a nation striving to distance itself from colonial influence. Recently, Mali gained attention for expelling French troops and halting payments to France, driven by a desire to reclaim its sovereignty and lessen dependence on former colonial powers. This decisive action reflects a broader trend across the continent, where countries are increasingly questioning the advantages of maintaining colonial relationships. Mali's choice to sever ties with France was not made lightly; it followed years of frustration with French military interventions, which many Malians felt failed to address the underlying causes of instability and violence. By expelling French forces, Mali aims to assert its sovereignty and develop indigenous solutions to its security challenges. While this move has garnered mixed international reactions, it highlights a growing sentiment among African nations to take charge of their own futures. Nigeria possesses significant untapped potential in the illegal agricultural sector, particularly in cannabis production. The country cultivates over 43,000 hectares of cannabis annually, yielding an average of 280 tons. This substantial production presents a unique opportunity for economic revitalization. If Nigeria were to harness cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes, much like Rwanda is currently exploring, it could significantly bolster its economy. The global cannabis market is expanding rapidly, fueled by increasing acceptance of its medicinal and therapeutic benefits. For Nigeria, legalizing cannabis could unlock a lucrative industry, generating jobs and attracting investment. The country’s favorable climate and agricultural expertise position it well to become a major player in the global cannabis market. Additionally, regulating and taxing cannabis could provide the government with a new revenue stream, helping to diversify the economy away from its oil dependency. Projections suggest that cannabis revenues could exceed $120 billion annually, contributing significantly to GDP growth. A compelling illustration of cannabis's economic potential comes from KKOG GLOBAL, which cultivates and manufactures cannabis-derived medicines across Africa, with facilities in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Uganda, Malawi, and Rwanda. KKOG has patented African-made medicines for global sale and export, aiming to provide effective alternative treatments for various medical conditions. The company is currently in discussions with authorities in Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, the Central African Republic, and Nigeria, as well as the Cancer Research Institute of Nigeria, to explore strategic partnerships that could replicate its successes and significantly enhance the country's revenue. If African nations were to adopt a similar approach and legalize cannabis for medicinal purposes, the economic benefits could be monumental. By leveraging their existing agricultural capabilities, these countries could establish a new industry that generates employment, boosts GDP, and reduces reliance on traditional economic models that have proven ineffective in fostering sustainable growth. Several countries have already recognized the economic potential of cannabis-based medicine. Nations such as Australia, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Germany, and South Africa have legalized these products and are reaping the economic rewards. These examples serve as models for African governments, illustrating that cannabis legalization can lead to economic growth and improved public health. In Australia, the legalization of medicinal cannabis has spawned a new industry that supports thousands of jobs and generates significant tax revenue. Similarly, Canada’s cannabis sector has become a major economic engine, with legal sales surpassing those of alcohol in some regions. Germany's medical cannabis program has not only provided patients with access to effective treatments but has also stimulated investment in research and development. In the USA, cannabis sales have outpaced those of both alcohol and cigarettes combined. South Africa, one of the few African nations to legalize cannabis, has experienced positive economic and social impacts, setting a precedent for others to follow. The drive for economic independence and self sufficiency is a powerful motivator for African nations seeking to break free from colonial legacies. The experiences of Nigeria's economic challenges and Mali's rejection of French influence highlight the urgency of pursuing alternative growth strategies. Legalizing and commercializing cannabis and cannabis-based medicines presents a viable solution. By capitalizing on their agricultural potential, African countries can enhance their economies, create jobs, and improve public health. Embracing this innovative approach could pave the way for a prosperous and self-sufficient future for the continent. The legalization of cannabis represents a promising pathway toward achieving these goals, providing a new source of revenue and fostering innovation within the pharmaceutical industry. As more countries recognize the advantages of cannabis legalization, Africa could emerge as a leader in this burgeoning global market, securing a brighter future for its citizens. It is crucial that Nigeria seizes this opportunity without delay, ensuring it does not miss out on such a significant potential for economic growth. Prince Ugo Mike Enwerem, a public affairs analyst is based in Abuja.

Expert lauds Soludo’s 'one youth, two skills' programme Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has been commended for the successful execution of the pilot phase of the ‘One Youth, Two Skills’ programme. This comes just as young Anambra entrepreneurs who benefited from the empowerment programme were presented with seed capital to the tune of two billion naira. Engr. Nnamdi Felix Unachukwu, Founder/ Senior Consultant, Business Matters Incubators (BMI) Finishing School, while commending the governor, noted that entrepreneurship is the only way to reduce poverty and the surge of unemployment in Nigeria. He added that the move was in tune with the Governor’s drive to unlock the economic growth of the state. He added, “BMI Finishing School commends Governor Soludo and identifies with him as a trailblazer. As an organization, this is exactly what we represent with our programmes which are tailored to train children in entrepreneurship, from Primary school pupils to Junior and Senior Secondary School. This speaks to the policy on primary school education to teach craft and trade. Unfortunately, this has been abandoned by many schools." “We also encourage state actors to emulate what he is doing in the area of entrepreneurship training for Nation Building. The Governor has proven that entrepreneurship education is critical and acts as a catalyst for stirring entrepreneurial intention from a young age, helping youths create businesses around their areas of passion and talent.” According to the business coach and consultant, “Given the surge in population, with other harsh economic realities such as decreasing FDI, collapse of companies, we need to look inward by developing our entrepreneurial capacities.” He added, “The American economy were built by entrepreneurs such as Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg who are employers of thousands. Nigeria needs to produce more Dangotes, Jim Ovias and groom the leaders of tomorrow. Entrepreneurship is the key driver that will help us reposition our economy.”

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Chief Matthew Onuigbo is of the opinion that Chief Lucky Igbokwe popularly known as Don Lulu should be rewarded with the governorship ticket of the PDP considering his loyalty to the party during its troubled times. The PDP chieftain who hails from Uturu but based in the U.S, posited that the People’s Democratic Party will do a great disservice if the party considers people who walked away from the party during her dark hours, but jettison people who believed that the party is supreme and sacrificed everything to remain in the party. “At the time when other aspirants were walking away from the party, demarketing the party and colluding with enemies of the party to destroy the party, Lucky Igbokwe stayed put in the party and remained consistent” “At the time when other candidates were filing multiple cases against the party in different courts, Lucky Igbokwe stood by the party” “Even when the gubernatorial primary did not favour him, he did not leave the party, instead he supported the late Professor Uchenna Ikonne. He abandoned his interest and focused on how to make Ikonne emerge as governor” “How then can such a man be abandoned now, at this critical time when the party needs a loyal member who will fly the flag of the PDP in Abia State. It will be a great disservice to the party and God will surely not be happy about that” Chief Matthew Onuigbo urged Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and PDP faithful’s in Abia State to support Don Lulu and let him fly the governorship flag of PDP in Abia State.

ABIA GUBER TICKET: REWARD LOYALTY, PATIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE, PRESENT 1ST RUNNER UP AS CONSENSUS CANDIDATE TO REPLACE LATE PROF IKONNE YOUTH CHARGE PDP From almighty God we come , to him we shall return. Death remains an inevitable event every mortal must taste hence with total submission to the will of God we accept the reality of departure of Our Dear Party Flag bearer for Abia state March 11th, 2023 Gubernatorial election Prof Uchenna Ikonne whose unfortunate death was announced yesterday. We pray God almighty grant him eternal rest and fortitude to the immediate family, PDP Abia state, Government and Good People of Abia State to bear the great loss. The obvious vacuum created by the sudden demise of Prof Ikonne necessitate our call on our great party to act with conscience and sincerity of purpose . In as much as Electoral Act clearly stated just 14days for conduct of fresh primary to present a replacement of any candidate who died before election date, it therefore became practical impossible to mourn for long the departure of our candidates before discussion on who replace the late prof as Abia state Gubernatorial candidate . This incident remains a test of integrity, and reward system of our great party PDP under the leadership Dr Ayorcha Ayu led National Executive Council. The pre and post primary election events in Abia state clearly established and confirmed loyal members of our great party as well separated the selfish members and selfless ones . Nigerians and PDP members across the nation will remember that prominent members of our party who have benefited greatly from our party in the past left our party for just a reason of their interest of securing our party Gubernatorial ticket not feasible , many withdrew from the primary election to defect to another party to contest governorship seat under another political party not minding the fate of PDP in Abia state going forward. Many went as far as casting aspersion on the person of the Incumbent Governor of Abia State Dr Okeize Ikpeazu for over dominance and allege partiality and favourism towards the late Prof. Amidst this controversy and political heat up, some dedicated, loyal and committed members stick to the process, accept the tradition and observed decorum in the face of this political frustration , without any derogatory act or move against the leader of the party in the state being His Excellency Dr Okieze Ikpeazu the Executive Governor of Abia state and follow the process to the lather until the winner emerged. These people did not only accept the outcome in good faith by not approaching court for tribunal case , the runner ups displayed high spirit of sportsmanship and the youngest among the contenders who came second by Name took up the Head of Youth Mobilization for the State Campaign council. This remain the peak of loyalty, patience and perseverance, a dignify display of selflessness and party first before individual interest . With this development at hand , we call on our Party to close rank with Abia state stakeholders to reward loyalty . This will serve as good precedence and motivation for young generation in our dear party . A practical young man by name , Mayor Lucky Igbokwe who came second (1st Runner Up of the Primary) should be presented as consensus candidate to replace late prof Ikonne for posterity and good legacy sake. Our party must encourage loyalty , reward patience as well celebrate patience members most critical young ones who the future of the party lies in the hand . We remain optimistic that our party NEC shall consider our call and yield to this voice of reasoning for the best interest of our party and her victory come 2023 in Abia state and Nigeria at Large. Abia is in need of fresh blood, new face , sharp and innovative brains who can only be found in young man like Mayor Lucky Igbokwe. We further assured the party of youth commitment to ensure we win landslide in Abia and across Nigeria come February and March 2023 general elections

Abia Governorship Candidate, Prof Ikonne Not Medically Fit, Should Be Replaced – PDP Youths Warn Leaders The PDP youths movement according to a release on Tuesday noted that Ikonne displayed his frail health status at the Abia State PDP Campaign Kick-off at Umuahia on November 24 from where he was taken for treatment and had since not returned. The Peoples Democratic Party National Youth Movement has warned the national leadership of the party to reconsider the “failing health” of Prof Uchenna Ikonne, the Abia State PDP Governorship candidate and find a replacement for him. The PDP youths movement according to a release on Tuesday noted that Ikonne displayed his frail health status at the Abia State PDP Campaign Kick-off at Umuahia on November 24 from where he was taken for treatment and had since not returned. In the release signed by Salahudeen Lukman, President, Gbe Benjamin Orduen, National Secretary and Elekwachi Joshua, Coordinator, South East Zone, the PDP youths said Ikonne who had been under “intensive care abroad and his inability to recuperate in the past 60 days” confirmed talks that he was not a suitable candidate. The PDP youths said, “The quarterly report of our Election Campaign Monitoring Committee of our Movement headed by National Director of Planning and Strategy from Abia State, South East Nigeria reveals this subject matter, presented to us as a case study today, hence our open call for immediate action by our party National Leadership and all well meaning stakeholders of the PDP in the South East and most critical, Abia State. “It's no longer news that the defection of Mr Peter Obi from our great party PDP to become the Presidential standard bearer of Labour Party has significantly threatened our usual bloc votes from the South East. It therefore means that the little strong hold we have in the South East such as Abia and Enugu states, must be jealously managed and protected. “This synopsis has informed our decision to make an open call for an expedited action on the Abia State matter, by our party leadership both at the state and national levels. “It's time to sacrifice for PDP's victory which shall mark our collective success at the 2023 polls. “The unfortunate incident of collapse on health ground of Prof Uchenna Ikonne, the Abia State PDP Governorship candidate on the occasion of Abia State PDP Campaign Kick off at Umuahia on 24th November, 2022 and since then he has not returned, seen or sighted in any forum, be it public or private gathering, calls for urgent action.” “The credible alternative before our party remains the substitution of Runner up of the PDP Abia State Gubernatorial Primary Election as consensus candidate to replace the ailing Prof Uchenna Ikonne. “This became very sacrosanct and imperatively important to enable the good people of Abia and PDP members in Abia state continue to stand with our great party. “Any attempt to impose or continue foisting on them a proven incapacitated individual as Gubernatorial candidate will amount to deliberate ridicule, insensitivity and gross wickedness on the state despite their long time loyalty and firm support and believe in our great party since inception of the 4th republic in 1999,” the PDP members added

He thanked his supporters for their steadfast loyalty and unwavering support and debunked the rumour that he had abandoned them. " Without you, we couldn't have created much impact", he said. " We want to stress that the Ekweremekwe Campaign Team gave the contest for the ticket of our party the best shot with the backing of my ardent supporters who strongly believe in my capacity to offer selfless service to the good people of Abia". He said he put up a formidable fight " even though the process was dogged by controversies over the three-man delegate list". Igbokwe explained that his decision to seek election was borne out of his passion to drive change and inspire the youths to a greater height and bring about a new normal. He also denied allegations that he was sponsored by a political god-father with vested interest in the outcome of the contest, explaining that the decision to join the race was entirely his and that he bankrolled his campaign. His words: " It should be noted that in the build up to the PDP governorship primaries, I had my Ekweremekwe Campaign Organisation transversed the 17 LGAs and engaged with stakeholders and potential delegates on how to salvage the God's Own State. We pushed the message of abiding hope for the future and the 'freedom from fear' which I presented to seek their support." Igbokwe noted that he had promised to return Abia to God and the people if elected Governor, adding that he was ready to deploy his international connections to help return the state to the " glorious years of Dr. Michael Okpara". He however, noted that following the outcome of the PDP primaries, a lot of alignments and re-alignments of political forces had been going on, hence his decision to support the party's flag bearer. He urged his supporters to transfer their support to the PDP governorship candidate, Professor Uche Ikonne. The UN Mayor of Peace pledged to mobilise his supporters to deliver Ikonne; Speaker of the State House of Assembly and House of Representatives candidate for Ikwuano-Umuahia federal constituency, Hon. " We are going to ensure that every interest is protected in the process if we must continue with Prof Uche Ikonne. " I will continue to stand and fight for your cause going forward. Enweremadu promised that the PDP flag bearer, Ikonne, would always consult with Igbokwe and give him a sense of belonging. He also said that himself and Igbokwe "still have future in Abia politics." They are actually not Political groups, they are nonpartisan, they are more interested in the wellbeing of the state. |
Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirant Mayor Lucky Igbokwe has accused Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu of bias ahead of the primary. Igbokwe says Ikpeazu is imposing his own preferred candidate on the state party delegates. Speaking on Monday, Igbokwe said the process of forming a 3-man ad-hoc committee to superintend the state primary is not transparent as there was no election to decide the committee. “I have been ready for this exercise all my life. I believe I was born to serve my people. “But when the foundation is faulty, the building will ultimately collapse. The process leading up to this exercise is faulty, hence, my rooted doubts over the fairness of the upcoming primary. “I do not trust the process as every action of the governor points to an imposition of his anointed candidate. This is not how democracy works,” he said. Also, the Oganihu Ndi Abia, a critical umbrella stakeholder in the affairs of the State, says the process lacks credibility, is illegal, and is unacceptable. The group expressed their displeasure with the development which they claim is likely to see mass defections and the end of the party in the state if an unpopular choice is imposed as the gubernatorial candidate for the elections. Comprising of the Abia Redemption group, Abia Rennaisance, Ndinne Abia, Abia Youth Assembly, Save Abia Congress, Nzuko Ndiabia, Abians in Diaspora, Voice of Hope, Abia Enough is Enough Movement, Abia Elders Forum and the Coalition for Change in Abia, the board of trustees chairman, Chukwudi Ibegbu, cautioned all the political parties, members and their supporters to refrain from acts that are capable of creating crises which could be inimical to the peace and progress enjoyed in the state. Ibegbu urged the parties to ensure a level playing field for the aspirants and that they have the exposure and capacity to transform the state, "Unless we get it right in leadership especially poltical leadership we shall continue to be in doldrums We have been monitoring the current political developments in the state and the jostle for political positions in our state and country. We note complaints coming from stake holders and participants in all contending political parties in the state over lack of internal democracy and imposition of candidates. This is obviously what has kept us down as a state. We therefore advise all political parties in our state to maintain internal democracy at all strata and give a level playing ground for all aspirants"

Abia state hasn't really done well in the past years in comparison to other eastern states, Ikpeazu was thought to be a great option to bring the state to a better state but he ended up taking it more backwards. Hopefully this time Abia will get it right. |
Abia needs some fresh air, someone young and vibrant that can put it up again in the state of affairs. Currently Abia seem to be on the sideline and in obscurity as nothing good or much seem to be coming from there. A young man like Mayor Lucky Igbokwe who just declared interest yesterday might be what they need to change the game.

That was hilarious. He has been a blessing to many and this won't be a big issue to do. He will definitely do far more to better the lives of Abians. |
