Hello Theveez,

Sorry, I don't know anything about Wevesti.com. Are you based in Nigeria or the U.S.? Mine was processed from the states, so my experience will be quite different from those doing the process from Nigeria.

Did your online portal update with visa stamping? We submitted to Lagos VFS on November 1st, but no communication so far. We paid for return envelope.

UK visa application is becoming a mess like some other countries with not so good track record. I used to credit them for prompt treatment of applications, though with ridiculous charges. He has sent message to tlscontact nigeria (UK in Nigeria).

Please, does anyone know how I can contact TLS.I already filled the complaint form on their website but no response yet. I had my biometric on 18th September and received the concluded email on the 4th October, but I’m yet to get an email from TLS. I paid for courier fee cause I don’t live in Lagos. It’s already taking too long. I’m just clueless.

You are not alone on this. A relative had his biometrics on September 17th and got the conclusion email on October 8th. His online account still shows that the decision has not been transferred to VAC. He too paid for courier delivery.

Xoom is the better options, see more here: https://www.questechie.com/2019/07/how-to-transfer-paypal-funds-to-local-bank.html

Wave is way better than xoom. As of today 7/23/2019 (9AM Mountain Time), the exchange rate for xoom is 1$ to N350 plus $4.99 transaction fee for sending $100 to Nigeria.

However, for wave, the exchange rate is $1 to 353 with no transaction fee. With wave, sending $100 will deliver N35,300 to your recipient in Nigeria and you pay no transaction fee. In contrast, sending the same amount with Xoom will deliver N35,000 with $4.99 as transaction fee.

Good afternoon all... Abeg I need help on immigration Visa.. A company in US offered me employment, they'll be the one to sponsor me including the flight fee. I'm still expecting my employment letter to arrive and the interview date to be fixed.. Does anyone have an idea how this process is and likely question the vo will ask while interviewing me.. thank you.

Congratulations on your employment offer! While no one here has definitive answer as to what questions you might be asked at the embassy, I will advise you about the following:

Display a good grasp of every detail listed on your resume.

Learn about the company you plan to join in the States. This might include what they do, your role in advancing their mission, why you consider them as a good company to join etc.

You should also demonstrate to the Consular Officer that you understand the type of visa for which you are interviewing. This is because U.S. grants many work visas and there are various terms to each of those visas.

Good luck on your interview!

You may be correct but that is a subjective issue but the truth is many Nigerians are not serious. The average Nigerian is more interested in the path of least resistance. You opted for employment based path not because it was the easiest but because your motivation was based on principles and determination. A number of your folks were distracted along the way, many overwhelmed by the American culture, even those married felt no qualms remarrying to obtain Green card, and others without the dexterity for higher education. Most of these ones have the financial backing but unfortunately couldn't follow through. In your case 80% were dropouts and that's not very different in other schools. If you could succeed other could. I will only excuse those in the minority without the financial capability to finish their studies.

I have once stated in this thread that 'it will be great to see those who have the means to stick to what brought them here in the first place."

I totally agree with you that many Nigerians lost their track immediately they got here due to circumstances that include life/self imposed (as previously stated in my other post). We have seen many sons and daughters of well to do Nigerians, who have both the mental and financial capacity to complete their education but abandoned their dreams.

not trying to insult you don't mistake me, about 2% Nigerians are better than Indians in IT if u have any engineering student as your friend ask him or her about programming, python, Java and coding honestly I don't know what they are teaching them in school if they don't know all these things
You can go to YouTube computer hack, game hack, computer shortcut all d channel are own by Indians.

True be told those Asian folks have better track record when it comes to IT or anything that has to do with numbers in comparison to an average Nigerian. Having said that, H1B is not limited to the field of technology as there are many fields that Nigerians excel as well. It's all about finding your niche.

She should change to Algonquin college.
To me, If she wants to change, I would advise her to use that energy and change to red river college cause the life in Winnipeg is sweet plus the cost of living is not high.
The cost for 1 term tuition fee in Ottawa or Toronto would take 1 year and a term (3 terms) tuition in Manitoba plus being nominated for pr is easier in those provinces compared to Ontario And BC

If she insists on coming to Ottawa or Toronto, should get her whmis 2015 (GHS) certificate on health and safety, PHAC Biosafety certificate and OHSA certificate Her lecturer can help her with it if her course is a coop program... Though she would undergo online classes/training and exams to get the certificates through the influence of the school. then she would give her lecturer or school the certificate to be certified.
Or should just goto PeopleReady for real-quick employment after passing the exam and interview.

With that certificate, she will get a job anywhere including hospital asides from restaurant or bartender job related cause they have there owned certificate

@Austacus thank you very much for the wonderful information. You guys rock!!!

The chances of passing are very slim. Reason being that most democrats will not support anything that omits DACA and most Trump voters equate DACA to amnesty. Both parties' bases operate in different worlds on immigration issues.

My own chip in
She should move to Ottawa or Toronto for summer ONLY to work. If she has any friends (that lives in an apartment) or family member that can accommodate her for the season

Work experience is very very important here.

Relocating to Toronto or Ottawa is highly crazy in terms of cost of living so I will advise her not to relocate.

Her resume should be in Canadian standard, her friends can help her with it, her school employment supports can also help her with it, indeed can also help her with it. But I would advise she should go through school employment supports or friends formats. She should also write a very good ready-made cover letter so whatever work she wants to apply for she would just do a little editing.

In Ottawa ”PeopleReady” employs every day And they have jobs that pay $22 per hr in this summer.

If she wants to come to Ottawa, she should call them and book an appointment with them. then she will be interviewed and write an exam. After the exam, they will congratulate her.

There are surplus jobs in Toronto, Ottawa and BC but the cost of living is maad.

Thank you for the information. I believe she has a well crafted resume and cover letter (though with limited work experience), as she has worked with her school's Career Services and other local employment agency in Windsor. I'm not oblivious of the importance of having Canadian experience in job search, but you will agree with me that it is financially straining schooling in Canada for 8 months without income. She just joined this thread and can see all this useful information you guys have been dishing out to aid her job search.

On Transferring to location with better job prospect, we have looked into schools and apartments in Toronto and found that while the cost of living and tuition might be higher there, the income you get by working in Toronto or Ottawa can go a long way in offsetting the cost of living in those two locations. In addition, the Canadian work experience is also vital for post graduation job hunt.

We know no one in Ottawa but she is open to moving there if she finds a comparable program to what she is studying in Windsor. The problem is she can't tell her landlord in Windsor to pause while she is on a job hunt to Toronto or Ottawa. Plus she will need a temporary place to stay to look for jobs in Toronto or Ottawa.

Thank you for the advice!

Just to chip in,

The struggle to get a job is basically the same across board, especially when you lack Canadian experience. It doesn't make a lot of sense moving to Toronto for that purpose alone given that she just completed her second semester. Note that the house rent and cost of living will also increase significantly. My advice would be to tweak her resume to the Canadian standard and apply for jobs on indeed and kijiji, she can also go to these places physically and hand in her resume.

There is a hiring agency called Legacy Personnel at 2480 Seminole St, Windsor, ON. She can drop her resume with them, get booked for an interview and hope it works out.

Finally, If she has 40 CAD to spare, she can apply for Smart Serve. It's a certification that allows one serve in restaurants and bars, you basically cannot serve alcohol or food anywhere without that certification. It costs 40 CAD and it takes roughly 6 hours to prepare for it. Now, having this certification will up her chances a great deal.

I hope this helps. Goodluck.

@Awuuga thanks a lot for the suggestions and enlightenment. She shall follow suit.

Thanks for this. EB1, EB2, EB3 and H1B are great routes for migrating to the US. Quite unfortunate that many Nigerian students don't follow through on this. EB3 provides permanent residency while H1B is temporary which can also lead to permanent residency.

You are absolutely correct that many Nigerian students don't follow through due to various circumstances which include self and life imposed. I believe everyone has their story, but it will be great to see those who have the means sticking to what brought them here.

She wants to change school or looking for where to work for the summer break before she goes back to Windsor?

I think you sent me a mail.

Looking for where to work in the summer and open to changing school. The reason she considers changing school is her area is dry and after summer she will still like to continue with her 20 hour student job. Plus, if she is to find a job outside her current geographical location, then the best option will be to terminate her lease and move to the new location and find a school there.

I sent you PM and replied to your email, sorry if you didn't get it. We can chat via email strictly about this in order not to derail the thread.

I like your line of thoughts..a lot has changed in the US immigration process. In the past F1 was a sure gateway to H1b and to Green Card but now it would take the Grace of God.
The era of Trump govt ushered in overhaul of the exisitng immigration process , although his latest proposal promises to prioritize post graduate students, people doubt if the proposal is going to pass the Democrat controlled lower house.
If you have found an employer willing to take you on, please stay put because most employment now stipulates no Visa sponsorship. The delay did not only affect H1b to Green Card, Infact qualifying Green card to Citizenship processing has gone from the usual 6 months processing time to 1 to 2 years.
Now let me tell you , the marriage route is closing up - especially if it's not genuine. New laws are cropping up everyday to make sure illegal stays cannot survive.
If you have an employer who is ready to issue you H1B please stick with it.

We should not be fooled that the Trump's new immigration proposal is genuinely crafted to bring skilled and highly educated legal immigrants to the US. To me, is all about deviding and rule tactics. He wants certain category of immigrants to feel as if they're welcomed in his type of America and others as unwelcomed. This tactics serve as cover up for his xenophobic belief. If he says he favors this type of immigrants, then why making life difficult for those who are currently pursuing what he claims to prefer. E.g. there are now higher denial rates for H1b applicants (not talking only about those outsourcing foriegn companies that sometimes abuse the visa) compared to pre-Trump era. Also, if you are lucky to be selected for the visa, transitioning to green card is saddled with another beauractic craziness. One of those craziness is that you will still be called to appear for interview not minding that you have been exhaustively vetted by the same institution wanting to interview you. All this adds to processing time and and cost for you and your employer.

I have a presentation on Tuesday.. bros I messed up my first presentation now I have a second chance ..

@naijaforeigner & co who are currently schooling in Ontario! A sister of mine just finished her second semester and has been looking for student jobs for the summer. She is open to transfer to school in Toronto area as there are limited opportunities in Windsor. I will be glad if anyone can connect her with openings in your area. I live in the U.S., so there is little I can do other than to help her financially.

P.S. She is able to pay for her rent immediately if she needs to move to where there are job opportunities.

Thank you in advance.

Good thoughts and move bro ...

I’ve always had this thought too that our smart skillful guys need to look into this route too instead of going after B2 visa and abusing it.

Almost 70% of Indians in the states came in through this H1B visa for IT and Health jobs ... And from my experience with them, some of our guys are so better than some of these dudes.

Our IT gurus in Naija need to look into this.

I'm glad people are commenting on the topic. What prompted me to create this topic is that we have thousands of Nigerians on F1 Visa and I always wonder where do most of these students ended up since our student status does not correlate with the pool of candidates seeking work visa such as H1b. We can only conclude that majority always end up using marriage as their last/only option to secure their green card. This type of scenerio reminds me of football in Africa, where we dominate any age based competitions but could not be found anywhere when it comes to competitions that have no age restriction. I can't blame these students because H1b route is fraught with various complexities and uncertainties, plus as humans we often take the easiest route. However, the problem with marriage in most cases is you will be tied down with someone whom you shared nothing in common but have to behave as if everything is okay. Most of these girls (in most cases) or guys (in limited cases) often rip you off of your money, body and time because your stay depends on them.

I could remember when I came in 2013 we had about 10 Nigerians in my school, but only two of us graduated as the remaining opted for marriage. Not because I too didn't want to do the same but because I had my wife back in Nigeria then. Also because I was lucky to secure funding after one year of self sponsorship.

One of the problems for Africans is that there is not much places to turn to for educational funding. Most of these asian students flooding US schools came from humble background like us but because they were able to secure loans in their various countries and have little to worry about paying tuition or daily expenses. Hence, they often graduate in higher rate and pursue their respective dreams compared to students of African descent.

What I have noticed is that once you are tied down with someone to secure your legal stay, then there is higher chance you will be abandoning your dream that brought you here in the first place. But, and I mean this, you have to do what is needed and apply Maslow's hierarchy of need, if every other door has been shut on you. That is, no more funding from home or other place.

Is it possible to get H1b visa after the completion of a certificate program in Biotechnology. I know someone currently doing something like that.

Regards

H1b requires having at least a bachelor's degree. Neither certificate nor associate degree from community college qualifies for the visa.

Your chances are very low to secure this type of visa. You need an invitation letter from the company you want to work for. Getting this is very hard. It is a long and tedious process.

Like I have stated in my previous post, it is difficult applying to jobs offshore, but that doesn't make it impossible. It's more difficult for Africans as most of these western employers oftentimes have negative perspective dealing with people from the continent.

The Indians and Chinese who form the larger bulk of the people in the pool come mostly from Indian outsourcing companies like Tata& Infosys. They brought these people in from abroad because they know each other.

I have no doubt if there are African companies with offices in the U.S. there will be higher chances for people of African background to get recruited. With the absence of that (in my opinion), one is left to apply to companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and the likes due to their global outreach/hiring practice. The drawback about those big companies is that you will be competing with the cream of the crop.

Big universities and hospitals are other paths to consider in getting this type of visa. I'm in academics and I have been on some hiring committees, hence I know if you stood out during the hiring process many employers will be willing to sponsor you. There are many Nigerians who hold high ranking positions in different universities across the U.S. and some of them were sponsored by their employers.

Your field of expertise goes a long way in determining how easy or difficult the process might be, as one will need to prove there is no qualified American or permanent resident willing and available to take the job. The popular field for this type of visa has been the STEM field. But, I consider academic field such as college/university lecturer equally a good field to secure the visa.

I'm sure it is possible to be processed from Nigeria, but such process adds extra layers to the hurdles. It's just about finding employers that are willing to sponsor you. Generally it is easier when you are in the states.

Nothing much compatriot! Glad that there is one (you) there following this route as marriage and family sponsorship have always been the popular routes for Africans. Everywhere you check (quora included) and you would think H1 visa is meant for only Indians.....

I arrived few years ago for a graduate program and was lucky to secure sponsorship from an employer. I just started the process for my green card and I found that this might take about two years or more to achieve due to the current government's disposition to every immigrant in the country.

I don't know if there is a topic about H1B visa on this platform but I have searched and could not find one.

There is no denying the fact that both indians and chinese dominate the pool for employment based visa in the U.S., but I believe there are Nigerians pursuing this highly coveted work visa/permanent residency. I'm pursuing my American dream through this path and would like to hear/share ideas with other Nigerians with similar experience.

Thank you!
