A 19-year-old chemistry student of the University of Ilorin, Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobi, on Tuesday, bagged a nine-month jail-term for defrauding three students seeking hostel accommodation. The charge sheet brought against convicted Oluwatobi by the Ilorin Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, read, ” That you, Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobi, in the month of November 2019, in Ilorin within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, did cheat by deceiving one Anjorin Oluwabukolami Eniola, a university of Ilorin student, when you fraudulently induced her to pay N45,000 into GT bank account number 045262140 of one Hassan Adefemi Daniel, for hostel accommodation, representation you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 of the Penal code and punishable under Section 322 of the same code.” Justice Sikiru Oyinloye of a Kwara state high court in Ilorin, convicted and sentenced the defendant to nine months imprisonment. The trial judge also fined the convict N105,000 to serve as a deterrent to others. Owolabi ran into trouble when the UNILORIN authorities reported his conducts to the EFCC alleging that he defrauded three hostel accommodation seekers. While passing the sentence, Justice Oyinloye said, ” the defendant was brought before this Court on a three-count charge, the charges were read to him and he pleaded guilty. “This court accept the evidence of the prosecution, the one-way testimonies of the sole prosecution witness,” the judge noted. “You are hereby convicted for the offence,” Justice Oyinloye declared. In his allocutos, J A O Ayinde urged the court “to temper justice with mercy and give his client an option of fine rather than custodial sentence.” Responding, the prosecution counsel, Andrew Akoja, said, “My Lord, the issue of sentencing is within the discretion of the court.” Justice Oyinloye sentenced Oluwatobi to three months improvement on counts 1, 2, and 3. He said the sentence would run concurrently with additional fine of N105,000. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is increasing charges against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to second-degree murder in George Floyd's killing and also charging the other three officers involved in the incident, according to a tweet from US Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Ellison's official announcement is expected to come Wednesday afternoon, more than a week after Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis, sparking nationwide protests that call for the end to police violence against black citizens. Derek Chauvin, who had his knee pressed into Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, had previously been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Officers Thomas Lane and J.A. Keung, who helped restrain Floyd, and a fourth officer, Tou Thao, who stood near the others, were not initially charged. Two autopsies on Floyd determined that he died by homicide. Minneapolis Police chief Medaria Arradondo fired the four officers and said they were "complicit" in Floyd's death, and Floyd's family and protesters nationwide have called for them to be arrested and convicted for the killing. According to the video and the criminal complaint, Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd's neck as Floyd pleaded that he could not breathe, as witnesses protested that he was dying, and even as Lane twice asked to turn him onto his side. Still, Chauvin kept his knee on his neck for almost three minutes after Floyd became unresponsive, the complaint states. Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Floyd family, told CNN Wednesday that he is confident the other officers will be charged before Thursday's public memorial in Minneapolis. "I am confident that these officers will be charged before people in Minneapolis say their final goodbyes to George Floyd, may he rest in peace," he said. SOURCE: CNN |

A man sacked as a police officer following the death of unarmed black man George Floyd in the US city of Minneapolis has been arrested, officials say. Derek Chauvin is one of four police officers who were fired after Mr Floyd's death in custody on Monday. There have been days of protests, looting and arson after an officer was filmed kneeling on George Floyd's neck. Mr Chauvin has been charged with murder and manslaughter. The case has added to US anger over police killings of black Americans. On Thursday, during the third night of protests over Mr Floyd's death, a police station was set alight. A number of buildings have been burned, looted and vandalised in recent days, prompting the activation of the state's National Guard troops. Earlier on Friday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he expected "swift and fair" justice for Mr Floyd's death. SOURCE: BBC NEWS |

Magicians:Yes, the previous party had its own 'contribution' to the present state of the country which I equally critisized, but should that be an excuse for the under performance of the present administration?? That seems to be the collary of your comment. And yes! I expect them to get the nation running again because they are currently in charge, and as such, they owe the country that duty. The previous administrations also owed us that duty, but they failed! and this present administration is also on the path of failure because they have spent over four years at the helm but no tangible development has been recorded, unless of course you consider the N Power scheme as a tangible development. |
surprise surprise |
Well well, now ain't this shameful. The only achievement she mentioned was the fact that we haven't had fuel scarcity in a while. Again, ain't that shameful?? A nation with abundant oil citing the prevention of fuel scarcity as one of it's achievements. What happened to stable electric power supply?? What happened to the railway projects?? What happened creation of employment opportunities?? What happened to strenthing the rule of law by obeying court orders?? Ass licking Joker!! |
