Under the aegis of South East Leadership and Development Initiative (SELDI), the move stems from “a near state of hopeless that has befallen the southeast since the end of the Civil War and in particular, since 1999, when the present democratic experience took off.” The leaders, it was learnt, reviewed the state of the zone in the past 17 years and concluded: “The present democratic dispensation has not helped the area.”Besides governors of the region, the initiative is also being driven by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu; former Commonwealth Secretary General, Emeka Anayoku; former Ministers Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Prof. Charles Soludo, and Prof. Barth Nnaji. Other include Dr Idika Kalu Idika, Mr. Tony Elumelu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Prof. Pita Ejiofor, Prof. Elo Amucheazi, Rear Admiral Ebitu Ukiwe (rtd), Chief Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), former Governor Peter Obi, Dr Orji Kalu, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Prof. Philip Emeagwali, and author, Chimamanda Adichie. A source told The Guardian: “The assumption that the Federal Government should play a leading role in reactivating the moribund infrastructure that stares the zone in the face is the greatest undoing of the region.” If you look at it, critically, you will know that over 80 per cent of our active youths have remained without jobs, thus wasting their productive age. If we have the quantum of investments that have remained moribund working, we won’t have the level of unemployment existing in the southeast.” A document obtained exclusively by The Guardian said SELDI “is dedicated to transforming and fostering the development of Nigeria, especially the southeast region, focusing on leadership development in order to change the fortunes of the people, and giving hope to present and future generations. SELDI is the response to the developmental gaps and challenges that confronted the southeast after the Civil War, which devastated the region.” [/q Time will reveal whether this is not the same moribund SEDI, South East Development (that has been there since 2001; http://allafrica.com/stories/200201290347.html) in yet another empty gesture! |

Bede2u:Very valid points. The West....also fighting its friends; and, supporting/arming its enemies against its friends. Irony is they think, and call it, it 'strategy'. Saudi Arabia supports Muslims in Nigeria. Iran supports Muslims in Nigeria. Iraq supports Muslims in Nigeria. Pakistan supports Muslims in Nigeria. United States (a supposedly Judeo-Christian country not only fights Christians in Nigeria, but actually supports Muslims in Nigeria). Britain (another Judeo-Christian country, supposedly, not only fights Christians in Nigeria, but actually supports Muslims in Nigeria). France (a Judeo-Christian country, supposedly, not only fights Christians in Nigeria, but actually supports Muslims in Nigeria). Irony is that they (those they support) still continue to bomb and terrorise them at home (US, Britain, France etc) and abroad? |
'Consequently the prayer is no longer "God bless Nigeria" but rather "God break Nigeria". It is no longer "God defend Nigeria" but rather "God restructure Nigeria". It is no longer "God deliver Nigeria" but rather "God deliver us from Nigeria". It is no longer "God preserve Nigeria" but rather "God redefine Nigeria". It is no longer "God remember Nigeria" but rather "God dismember Nigeria".' Femi Fani-Kayode Reality 101 |
dre11:The way Nigerians can strengthen and deepen their current hard-worn democracy is to enforce the provisions, letter and spirit of the constitution through court actions, NOT BY MERE WORD OF MOUTH AND PERENNIAL WHINING! On the flagrant abuse of the Federal Character Principle and others, the lawyers would do Nigeria a world of good by approaching the courts for interpretation pending when the Constitution is amended to properly spell out and and make it legally binding to not only obey, but also be seen to have obeyed (or be obeying) the federal character principle, even in appointments that do not need legislative approval. Likewise on mandating an incoming administration to complete projects started by the predecessor administration! |
The report though specific to England and Wales, nevertheless, still raises loads of concern and worries about the committee members' real intent and motives. Here are the worrying paragraphs:

D. Civil rights and freedoms (arts. 7, 8, and 13-17) Birth registration / Name and nationality 33. The Committee recommends that the State party encourage its Overseas Territories to revise the local legislation and the British Nationality Act in order to guarantee the right of migrant children, in particular those children born in the territories, to a birth certificate. Freedom of thought, conscience and religion 34. The Committee is concerned that pupils are required by law to take part in a daily religious worship which is “wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character” in publicly funded schools in England and Wales, and that children do not have the right to withdraw from such worship without parental permission before entering the sixth form. In Northern Ireland and Scotland, children do not have right to withdraw from collective worship without parental permission. 35. The Committee recommends that the State party repeal legal provisions for compulsory attendance at collective worship in publicly funded schools and ensure that children can independently exercise the right to withdraw from religious worship at school. President John Evans Atta Mills has directed the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Sherry Aryittey, to ensure that Nigerian telecommunications giant Globacom begins full operations in Ghana before the end of 2010. The Minister for Communications, Haruna Iddrisu, who disclosed this on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana Show on Thursday November 4, said the President wants the Environment and Communications Ministry to remove all bottlenecks preventing Globacom from starting full operations. According to Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, most of the issues regarding Glo’s activities have been addressed except those to do with the erection of telecom masts which is yet to be thrashed out completely. He gave the assurance that per the President’s directive the two ministries will work rapidly to allow what would be the nation’s sixth telecoms operator offer an alternative. The Nigerian mobile investor in 2009 threatened to withdraw from Ghana amid claims that its infrastructure was being sabotaged. Globacom was issued a license in 2008 and had initially scheduled to launch GSM and WCDMA networks by end-2009. But Globacom is still to launch services in Ghana. The operator claims that its infrastructure has been sabotaged, frequencies have been interfered with and its advertising billboards vandalized. The operator also suffered from a ban on the erection of new mobile masts. Ghana has five mobile operators: Zain, Vodafone, MTN, Millicom (tiGo) and Kasapa. Globacom also runs mobile operations in Nigeria and Benin republic and has invested in sub-marine cable Glo-1. The cable was expected to go live in 2009 with planned landing points in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and UK, but this cable is also yet to be operational.
