COVID-19: Invest more in science, less in religion, Mrs Akeredolu tells Nigerians

The Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Akeredolu, has stressed the need for Nigeria and Nigerians to set their priorities right by investing more in science and less in religion.

Mrs Akeredolu stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Akure.

“It is glaring that the foreign religions over which we are killing ourselves in Nigeria have failed the world in this season of anomie and only science can save mankind.

“Indeed, Coronavirus has humbled the world’s religions and Nigerians whose lives depend on praying and fasting for miracles to happen in this digital world of science and technology.

“When I said that I was more than convinced that religion is man-made and a bastion of sexism, which has subjugated women, festered gender inequality, stifled progressive thinking, retarded development and invariably added little or no value to our lives, I was called unprintable names.

“I remain unshakeable with my conviction.

“This virus has proved me right, to a large extent. Nigerians, in particular have invested so much in religion that amounted to nothing. Period!

“Now that a deadly virus is ravaging the world, where do we look up to? Science or religion?” she queried.

Mrs Akeredolu, however urged Nigerians to be hygienic and report any person showing Coronavirus symptoms to the nearest hospital for necessary treatment and also observe effective hand washing, with soap and running water, to avert the disease.

While advocating for the use of hand sanitizer, she urged members of the public to avoid contact with anybody showing symptoms of the disease. (NAN)

A large Lagos food market has been struggling to manage crowds amid Nigeria's coronavirus lockdown.
Mile 12, the megacity's largest perishable food market, was yesterday crammed with traders and shoppers elbowing their way through narrow paths sandwiched by huge baskets of tomatoes, with little social distancing in sight.

Femi Odusanya, consultant for the market association, said the challenges were "enormous," and called for the government to "do more to make sure that we keep people safe and (...) at home."

Under a government intiative, the management have set up an offshoot makeshift market in Ogudu, in an attempt to reduce crowds by bringing the produce closer to the communities they serve.

But as desperation mounts, delivery trucks have come under attack, food items stolen and vans damaged.
For Lagos' poor, the priority is getting food onto the table.

"People must eat. I strongly believe that hunger is much more dangerous than the coronavirus so we must do our best to ensure that people get food to eat," said the market association's chairperson Shehu Usman.

Nigeria has confirmed 873 COVID-19 cases and 28 deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

Rebound: Oil prices rise after historic crash to below zero

US crude prices rose above $1.10 after a supply glut sent prices spiralling downward, but concerns about demand remain.

Oil prices recovered some lost ground from a historic crash on Tuesday, with United States crude turning positive after trading below $0 for the first time ever.

Gains, however, were capped due to unresolved concerns about how the market can cope with an oversupply of crude as demand continues to be decimated by the coronavirus pandemic.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for May delivery was up $38.73 at $1.10 a barrel by 01:17 GMT after settling at a discount of $37.63 a barrel in the previous session.

The May contract expires on Tuesday, while the June contract, which is more actively traded, jumped $1.72, or 8.4 percent, to $22.15 a barrel.

Although the negative price of US crude futures was merely a technical blip, it signals "demand devastation" as "nobody wants to store oil", Stephen Innes, Asia Pacific market strategist at AxiCorp, told Al Jazeera.

"If it continues down this road, without any further cuts by OPEC, it would cause a lot of trouble - credit risks, banking risks, unemployment risks," Innes said.

Global benchmark Brent crude for June delivery was up 49 cents, or 1.9 percent, at $26.06 per barrel.

"Demand destruction from COVID-19 will see a slower expected reopening of the US economy," said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at broker OANDA, predicting a weak period for oil prices. "The WTI crude June contract was able to hold the $20 a barrel level and is seeing a modest gain following the painful rollover of the May contract."

Oil prices have skidded as travel restrictions and lockdowns to contain the spread of the coronavirus curbed global fuel use, with demand down 30 percent worldwide. That has resulted in growing crude stockpiles with storage space becoming harder to find.

The main US storage hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, the delivery point for the US WTI contract, is now expected to be full within a matter of weeks.

"Today it's pretty clear that a major issue in the market is a glut in the US and lack of storage capacity," said Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist, CMC Markets in Sydney.

Faced with the situation, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies including Russia, a grouping known as OPEC+, have agreed to cut output by 9.7 million barrels per day. But that will not take place before May, and the size of the cut is not viewed as big enough to restore market balance.

OPEC+ will most likely consider deeper output cuts and the US will be more inclined to consider lowering supply as "everyone will come together" to support oil markets, Innes said

"There's too much at risk," he said, highlighting not only to investors involved in the financial markets for crude oil, but also the millions of people employed in the oil and gas industry.

Meanwhile, US crude inventories were expected to rise by about 16.1 million barrels in the week to April 17 after posting the biggest one-week build in history, according to five analysts polled by Reuters news agency. Analysts expected petrol stocks to rise by 3.7 million barrels last week.

The American Petroleum Institute is set to release its data at 4:30pm (20:30 GMT) on Tuesday, and the weekly report by the US Energy Information Administration is due at 10:30am (14:30 GMT) on Wednesday.

"Negative prices will ... raise the topic of mandated production cuts in the US. The Texas Railroad Commission is set to meet today, after their meeting last week. There is the potential that they vote in favour of production cuts for producers in the state today, which if it is the case, would provide some relief to the market," ING commodities strategy head Warren Patterson and senior commodities strategist Wenyu Yao wrote in a note on Tuesday.

Nigeria’s north: Coronavirus in the world’s poverty capital

With dwindling oil prices, medical doctors embarking on strike, banditry, an unending insurgency, millions of out-of-school children roaming the streets and a possible outbreak of the coronavirus, Northern Nigeria, is preparing for a devastating pandemic.

In Kaduna, six state governors from the north-west part of the country met amidst sirens and heavy traffic to announce the closure of all schools in their states for one month.

A suspected case of coronavirus had been reported in Katsina, one of the states bordering Kaduna city of about one million that was once the capital of the British Northern Nigerian protectorate.

It’s currently a major trade center and transportation hub that connects the northern part of Nigeria to the south,

Preventing COVID-19 in the North
Chairman of the forum and Katsina state Governor, Aminu Masari, a former speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, said the decision to take action became crucial to prevent the spread of coronavirus across the northwest.

The Kaduna State Government also announced the indefinite postponement of the 2020 edition of the Kaduna Investment Summit that has attracted key industry players in the last 4 years such as Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and was supposed to have Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame present for this year’s edition.

Kaduna has also started to fumigate markets, in a bid to keep the virus at bay. All shops that sell non-essential items must close, by order of the Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

But the North accounts for almost 90 percent of all the poor people in Nigeria.

Only 24 percent of households have access to basic services such as electricity, water and sanitation. Compounded with that is the fact that about ten million children remain out of school and roam the streets begging as part of an Almajiri system of religious education.

An outbreak in the region will be catastrophic

So far Nigeria’s purported preparedness to contain the virus is done through citing its successful response to the Ebola outbreak five years ago; a success focused on the strength of Lagos.

In reality, Nigeria experiences high inequality along geographic lines, with poverty and poor economic indices mostly concentrated in the North and in rural areas. Poverty rates in the southern zones are around 12 per cent compared to about 87 percent in the northern part of the country.

Poverty in a Time of Corona

With the global drop in crude oil prices President Muhammadu Buhari who also doubles as the senior Minister of Petroleum Resources has approved the reduction of pump price for Nigerians from $0.40 to $0.35 per liter.

The Federal Government had projected a record budget of about 10.6 trillion Naira in 2020, but with the decline in crude oil price, Nigeria’s finance minister, Zainab Ahmed announced a cut in the size of the budget.

The ability of the country to meet its 2.64 trillion Naira oil revenue target has been curtailed by about 40 per cent. This deficit is currently putting Nigeria’s economy in a potential slump with oil being the country’s biggest export that essentially funds the budget.

Having set the budget with a benchmark oil price of 57 dollars per barrel, and the current oil price being around 23 dollars per barrel, Africa’s largest economy is unable to fund the country’s budget due to the current pandemic.

This could unleash unexpected economic consequences, even more so in poverty stricken northern Nigeria. In response to possible consequences, the Kaduna State Government has set up an economic crisis committee to implement stringent measures and depress recurrent costs in anticipation of a steep decline of revenues from sales of petroleum.

It will remain to be seen however if other northern states can reduce dependence on oil revenues from the Federal Government and if further belt tightening measures can be imposed.

Some 200 kilometers from Kaduna, in the Federal Capital of Nigeria, is the Association of Resident Doctors. They announced their decision to embark on an indefinite strike, a few hours after the third case of coronavirus was announced in the country.

The doctors embarked on the strike because they had not been paid their salaries for over two months while working on a hazard allowance of less than 20 dollars. The federal government controls all three systems of health care delivery in the country.

And as the Director General of the World Health Organisation addressed African countries to prepare for the worst, coronavirus began to spread across the continent. To date, no deal has been met by the striking doctors and the government.

Before the current travel restriction on 13 countries and after the third confirmed case of COVID-19, Nigeria had initially insisted on self-quarantine for travellers from high-risk countries. But such measures were not fully supported by some foreign policy analysts like Gimba Kakanda.

“Our best decision is preventing this virus from infiltrating the continent. That’s the only practical strategy before us. We shouldn’t even imagine a curative strategy because we do not have the health system capable of catering for our population if it comes to mass infection,” tweeted Kakanda.


Bottom line: With a full blown pandemic in the country, and the current poverty indices, the bulk of the country’s almost 200 million people cannot afford to self-isolate, as they depend on day-to-day work and menial trades for food. And with a weak health sector in the country, it’s no surprise that experts worry about increasing cases of COVID-19 in the coming weeks.

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria, government in conjunction with other stakeholders have been involved in ways to contain the virus and ensure the spread is reduced.

As a result, government has made several moves including a major lockdown of the hardest hit states of Lagos, Ogun and Federal Capital Territory.

While at this, the Nigerian Government has received several donations from both local and foreign bodies to help tackle the virus and cushion the effect of the pandemic on the people.

Part of the funding received by the country was channelled towards increasing the testing capability of the country as the health sector in its current abysmal state does not have the capacity to carry out mass testing.

54gene, African Genomics Research, Services, and Development Company, raised the sum of $500,000.

The money raised was to help increase COVID-19 testing capacity in the country by up to 1,000 additional tests daily.

In the same vein, Chinese billionaire, Jack Ma, among other things, donated 20,000 test kits to Nigeria.

Also, the United Nations donated 10,000 test kits while Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria donated 5,000 test kits to the country.

However, despite receiving these equipment, the country still ranks low in Coronavirus testing in Africa.

As at 17th of April 2020, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, the agency saddled with combating the virus in Nigeria revealed it has only carried out 7,153 tests.

According to data by Worldometer, Nigeria, when compared to other countries on the continent, has only done 35 test per one million population.

In the same period, South Africa has done 100,827 tests while Ghana has tested 50,719 with Egypt 25,000 tests.

Mauritius, despite recording 324 cases with 108 recovered, has carried out 9,755 tests.

Similarly, Kenya with just 246 cases has tested 10,784 samples.

Interestingly, the index case for South Africa came a week after Nigeria announced its first case on February 27, 2020.

While South Africa recorded its first on March 5, 2020, Ghana recorded its index case two weeks after Nigeria on March 12.

From that period till now, South Africa and Ghana with lesser population, have approximately carried out 20 times and 10 times respectively, more tests than Nigeria has done.

This brings to the fore Nigeria’s lack of efficiency in attaining a full appraisal of the current reality.

As at April 17, Nigeria currently has 493 cases, 159 discharged and 17 deaths, this means 335 active cases.

While this is reassuring, it is not also deceptive as it does not reflect our reality, and it is because Nigeria has not tested enough.

Existing data shows that if the rate of testing for other countries are applied for Nigeria over the same period, Nigeria would have recorded more than what it currently has.

The low number of tests carried out in Nigeria has cast a cloud over confirmed cases recorded in the country.

There has been widespread accusations that the agency in charge of testing, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control deliberately refused to test people for the virus, rather the agency has prioritised testing politicians and high profile persons in the country.

The diplomatic community has warned that Nigeria could record an explosion in infected cases in coming weeks as there are at least 5,000 persons, who had come in contact with infected persons in the country already.

As against the deliberate act of not testing people in Nigeria, the World Health Organisation has called for the mass testing of people suspected of having the virus.

“You cannot fight a fire blindfolded and we cannot stop this pandemic if we don’t know who is infected.

“We have a simple message for all countries: test, test, test. Test every suspected case,” WHO said.

Meanwhile, in his latest nationwide broadcast where he extended the lockdown in the states of Lagos, Ogun and FCT, President Muhammadu Buhari disclosed that the country will improve its capacity to be able to carry out 1,500 tests a day.

Also, in its latest release, on April 17, 2020, the NCDC stated that it was working hard to increase the number of samples tested including community surveillance in the FCT and Lagos.

It also released its strategy for containing the virus in Nigeria.
