Politics / Lagos Releases N5.5bn To Contractors For 181 Inner Roads by theflightnewspa: 9:28pm On Feb 01, 2018
Lagos Releases N5.5bn To Contractors For 181 Inner Roads

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it has released the sum of N5.563billion to contractors to flag off the construction of the 181 roads spread across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State.

In a statement by the State’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, the Government said the construction of the 181 council roads was in fulfillment of the promise by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to open up more inner roads across the State following the successful delivery of the 114 roads in September 2016.

According to Akinsanya, the roads would be constructed in phases, noting that phase one will see the construction of one road each in the 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs of which contractors have been mobilised to move to site immediately.

The Commissioner said the sum of N5,563,697,382.00 released was 30 percent payment for the construction of the 57 roads while the total cost of the roads stands at N18,545,657,940.00.

“The roads will be done in phases, already phase one has been released. This phase involves 57 roads cutting across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

To enhance immediately mobilization to site, 30 percent has been given to all the contractors upfront. This is in line with the magnanimity of Governor Ambode’s administration to ensure service delivery all year round,” Akinsanya said.

He said due process was observed in awarding the contracts, adding that bids were opened on November 1, 2017 after which they were evaluated and considered.

He said there are 57 contractors involved in the first phase of the construction with a mandate to deliver in six months.

“Governor Ambode is totally committed to ensuring that Lagosians continue to enjoy good governance. There are many projects going on simultaneously across the State and the roads to be constructed will further open up the LGs and LCDAs for economic prosperity,” Akinsanya said.

The Commissioner, however, urged residents to continue to pay their taxes promptly to enable the Government to meet up with its target to complete all ongoing projects in the State this year.

Politics / 2019: Govs, Senators Disagree by theflightnewspa: 4:33pm On Feb 01, 2018
2019: Govs, Senators Disagree

The picture of what is to come in 2019 has been painted in the latest disagreement between the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) and the upper legislative house -the senate.

Senators and governors are locked in a bitter row over the 2019 elections. The development sparked an uproar on the floor of the Senate yesterday.

Zamfara Central Senator Kabiru Marafa accused Governor Abdulaziz Yari of plotting to eliminate him. Both are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Marafa asked his colleagues to hold the governor and his deputy responsible should anything happen to him and members of his family.

He said he had information that his life and his family members’ were no longer safe.

The senators/governors crises in some of the states were brought up by Bauchi Central Senator Isa Misau who said the crisis between Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and his predecessor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, could threaten the peace in that state.

Misau criticised alleged display of weapons by youths and women in Kano State on Tuesday.

Kwankwaso (Kano Central) was on Tuesday advised to shelve his planned visit to Kano State to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

Kwankwaso has been having a running battle with Kano State Governor Ganduje over unresolved political differences.

The Bauchi State lawmaker urged the Senate to condemn a situation where a senator would be prevented from visiting his constituency.

He insisted that if the development was allowed to fester, it would become a norm too dangerous to handle.

Misau said: “I want to talk about what is happening in Kano. About 70 per cent of the people in my place share boundaries with Kano. The level of thuggery we have seen in Kano State is troubling. We need to talk of how Boko Haram started in the Northeast. It started as “ECOMOG.”

”This issue happened when one of our colleagues said he was going to visit Kano State. Instead of him to be allowed to visit and talk to his people, the police stopped him. If a senator is not allowed to visit his constituency, one day, it will be anybody’s turn.

“The kind of weapons people paraded yesterday in Kano was troubling. We are watching. I see no reason why a person who wants to travel to his own town will not be allowed. For the first time in the history of this country, women were given arms in Kano on Tuesday.

“If we do not do anything about this, we will be in trouble. How do we give our own people arms? We need to investigate what is happening in Kano State to avoid a national crises.

“We need to condemn what happened in Kano. We need to investigate arms that were given to people in Kano.”

Hardly had Misau concluded his submission when Kano South Senator Kabiru Gaya challenged his right to bring an issue that was being addressed in the state to the floor of the Senate.

Gaya, also a former governor of the state, noted that contrary to the bad picture painted by Misau, there was no breakdown of law and order in Kano State.

He told his colleagues that Kano politics is peculiar and should be handled with care.

Gaya, who described the face-off between Ganduje and Kwankwaso as a “family affair”, asked the Senate to tread softly due the volatility of Kano politics.

He said: “Let me clearly say that we are peace loving people in Kano State. Kano politics has always been different. Kano has always been a volatile state during politics. The rally we had in Kano, there was no case of fighting.

“Nobody was killed. Let us understand. The issue of the two governors must be understood. They are both governors. This is a family matter and we are working to reconcile both of them.”

Backing Gaya, Senator Jibrin Barau (Kano North) questioned why Misau should bring the issue to the Senate.

Barau said senators should restrict themselves to issues in their states, instead of delving into areas that do not directly affect them.

He wondered why Misau was not bothered about the face-off between him and Governor (Bauchi State) Mohammaed Abubakar)

The Kano North Senator accused Misau of misleading the Senate, by claiming that Kano State could be thrown into chaos.

.Barau said: “I am worried here. A trend is now emerging and we tend to create troubles among ourselves. What Misau has started will not go well with this Senate. The Senate President must stop it.

“We are all politicians. There are bound to be disagreements. Misau is being used by some people to blackmail us in Kano State.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki frustrated attempts by Misau to respond to the barrage of attacks on him.

Saraki gave Kwankwaso the floor, but he declined, saying: “I believe as a leader, I do not want to say anything.”

Saraki asked his colleagues to avoid bringing personal problems with state actors to the floor.

He noted that senators needed to agree at what point certain issues will be entertained in the chamber.

Saraki said,”This is a matter that can be addressed at the state level. There is still a room for reconciliation. There is going to be a trend when politics will creep in here. We need to try and manage this issue. Many states have these challenges.

“We need to agree at what point this issue should come to the floor of the Senate. Let us rise above these issues before we bring them here. We need to set up a committee to begin to look at these issues.”

Saraki told Committee on Police Affairs Chairman Abu Ibrahim to invite the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and ensure that adequate security is provided whenever Kwankwaso decides to visit his constituency.

“They must provide security at anytime Senator Kwankwaso wants to visit Kano State,” Saraki added.

The trend of governors engaging senators in cold war across the country is becoming worrisome to politicians especially as the 2019 general election draws near.

Buhari Has Reduced Himself To Katsina President

More reactions trail the press release of former President, Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo who acviced President Muhammadu Buhari to shelve his plans of seeking a second term in 2019, resign and return home. Elder statesman and a chieftain of Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Ayo Adebanjo, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari, of reducing himself to President of Katsina. Pa Adebanjo, was reacting to a statement written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, rubbishing the Buhari-led government. The leader of the influential Afenifere group, also addressed the issue of restructuring, saying it should be clear now to Buhari and all those opposed to it that it was the solution to the key challenges facing the country. He said,

“If Buhari has been sincere about keeping Nigeria together in peace, he should have called them to address their grievances but he intimidated and wanted to butcher and kill them in their land. It shows in everything that he does that he is the President of Katsina State and not of Nigeria!”

Speaking on Obasanjo’s letter, the elder statesman said,

“When Obasanjo said both APC and PDP cannot take us anywhere, I agree with him. But any party Obasanjo is interested in, I am out of it because Obasanjo will not support anything except he has vested interest. I am interested in the message and not the messenger on this occasion.”

Farm Attack : Falae, Adesina Trade Words

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Chief Olu Falae has said he would not be intimidated over his sad experiences in the hands of rampaging herdsmen and expressed disappointment over the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter, following the recent attack on his farm in Ondo State.

This came as the Ondo State Government, yesterday vowed to regulate the activities of herdsmen in the state.

But when contacted, the Presidency kept mum on the attack as Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina said: “It is not a Presidency affair.”

The Ondo Police Command, however, assured that investigations are under way to nab the arsonist that perpetuated the act.

Falae spoke with newsmen after state government officials and the state Police Commissioner, Mr Adeyanju visited his farm, which was set ablaze in Ilado, Akure North area of the state.

He, however, vowed to resist intimidation and harassment by the herdsmen to chase him out of his farm of 32 years.

He said: “My farm has been destroyed five times within three years and it is a deliberate means to probably kill me, run me out of business and away from the farmland which is not possible.”

The former Finance Minister equally insisted that “there shall not be cattle colonies in any part of Yorubaland. It’s a fraud.”

The Press dtatement issued by former President, Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo to President Muhammadu Buhari on the state of the nation is still generating huge debate and controversies.

Ekiti State Governor , Ayodele Fayose, has lent his voice to the debate. Fayose attacked former Obasanjo over his letter to President Buhari.

Obasanjo had on Tuesday in a special press statement titled, ‘The Way Out: A clarion call for coalition for Nigeria Movement advised Buhari not to seek a second term.

Fayose described Obasanjo ’s letter as “ belated and self -serving.”

According to a press statement by his Chief Press Secretary issued in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday,
Fayose said, ” It is a face-saving letter after Obasanjo , who led the cabals that imposed Buhari, had seen that Nigerians have turned back from following the president.

“Damning as the Obasanjo letter was and although it makes some sense , the writer is not deserving of the letter.

“Obasanjo is not the right person to write that letter.

Lai Mohammed Replies Obasanjo
●Says “Talk About Buhari’s Re-election Is A Distraction”

We have read the press statement by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the State of the Nation.
For the record, Chief Obasanjo is a patriot, and he has proven this time and time again. We appreciate what he said concerning the Administration’s performance in two out of the three key issues that formed the plank of its campaign: Fighting corruption and tackling insurgency. Specifically, the former President said President Buhari must be given credit for his achievement so far in these two areas. We thank him for this.

Apparently, the former President believes that the Administration does not deserve a pass mark in the area of the economy, which is the third of our three-pronged campaign promises.

We have no doubt that in the face of massive challenges in this area, this Administration has availed itself creditably. We believe that Chief Obasanjo, because of his very busy schedule, may not have been fully availed of developments in the government’s efforts to revamp the economy, which was battered by the consequences of over-dependence on a commodity as well as unprecedented pillaging of the treasury.

Today, most of the indices by which an economy is measured are looking up. Permit me to say, however, that Nigeria would not have exited recession through a mere order or if the Administration had not made use of ”good Nigerians” who could help.

This Administration is making steady progress in its determined effort to revamp the economy, and the results are showing:

* Foreign Reserves have peaked at $40b, the highest level in about four years, and up from $24 billion just a year ago, even though when we came in, the price of oil had crashed woefully.
