Honestly I feel there are varying levels of success with different measurements... So to you it might not be but maybe that person worked extremely hard to buy that car or house and for them that is their measure .... Honestly as long as it's not on credit.

success is fulfilled purpose, e.g a doctor saving lives, a pilot recording successful flights, a police man taking down criminals, these are things that can be recorded in time as feats. people buy cars everyday but not everyone can save lives.

cost can vary according to ur budget but if you need something that's acceptable, then I will suggest ;

1) mic (behringer)
2) PC (Mac, Acer, MSI)
3) audio interface (focusrite, m-audio)
4) midi keyboard (different types)
5) monitor speakers (rokit, Yamaha hs8)
6) UPS
7) analog gear (maschine, akai mpc)

good to go. you may not really need analog gear if you're good at playing the piano, but it's good to have a large library of sounds when producing music.
