Martha James. Grace Paul. Rebecca Joseph. Mary Ali. Ruth Kolo. And so many others.

It took Nigerian officials agonizing weeks to publish the names of all the students Boko Haram kidnapped from a boarding school in the village of Chibok four years ago, on the night of April 14. Once they did, the numbers were staggering.

The list quickly circulated among the grieving parents searching for their daughters, some setting out on motorbikes to confront the Islamist militants who had stormed the school, loaded the girls into trucks and hauled them away at gunpoint.

Soldiers used the list, too, as they combed the countryside for the missing students, marching through the forest, dispatching jets and enlisting the help of foreign militaries.

Negotiators checked the names as they bartered with militants for the girls’ release. And the list became an inspiration for protesters hundreds of miles away in the capital, who kept marching for the girls’ return, day after day.

“As I began to read each name, my resolve strengthened,” said Oby Ezekwesili, a former education minister who led protests. “They were not just statistics. These were real human beings.”

The Nigerian military says it has rescued 149 women and children abducted by the armed group Boko Haram in the country's northeast.

Onyema Nwachuku, army spokesman, said on Sunday the freed captives included 54 women and 95 children, according to the NAN news agency.

"The rescued hostages are currently receiving medical attention," he said in a statement, adding that they would be "profiled after the medical screening".

The rescues took place during a raid on a Boko Haram hideout in the community of Yerimari Kura on Saturday. Soldiers killed three fighters during the operation and captured five others suspected of belonging to the group, Nwachuku said.

His statement did not specify when the women and children had been abducted.

Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from Abuja, capital of Nigeria, said the number of people Boko Haram had kidnapped in Yerimari Kura "demonstrated the group's resilience", despite losing significant swaths of territory to the Nigerian army in recent years.

Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates to "Western education is forbidden", has waged a nearly 10-year armed campaign to create an Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria.

The conflict has left at least 20,000 people dead and displaced more than 2.6 million.

At its peak, the group effectively controlled large areas in the Lake Chad region, but the Nigerian military, with assistance from Chad, Cameroon and Niger, has pushed Boko Haram fighters out of a number of provinces.

However, "Boko Haram has adapted by splitting into smaller groups, infiltrating communities, launching attacks here and there and continuing to make statements that they are very much around", said Idris.

In March, a Boko Haram attack on the northeastern town of Rann left at least two aid workers, a doctor and eight soldiers dead.

In February, Nigerian and Cameroonian troops freed 1,130 civilians kidnapped by the group in the Lake Chad region.

Boko Haram gained international notoriety after its fighters kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in the town of Chibok in April 2014. About 100 girls are still missing.

In February, the group's fighters attacked another school in the northeastern state of Yobe and seized more than 110 schoolgirls. A month later, the government said 101 had been freed.

A planned foreign trip for eight members of the National Assembly sponsored by the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) has continued to generate controversy, months after it was announced as cancelled.

Activists have also condemned the practice where Nigerian lawmakers are sponsored on local and foreign trips by government agencies they are supposed to have oversight on, saying it creates a conflict of interest.

NBET in November 2017 budgeted $96,350 for the eight lawmakers to attend the 43rd international training programme on utility regulation and strategy; but cancelled the trip for undisclosed reasons.

he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will soon commence the prosecution of those listed as “looters” in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the federal government, TheCable understands.

An EFCC official said presidency has directed the anti-graft agency to “swing into action” as controversies continue over the publication of a looters list by government.

“We are getting the case files ready,” the source said but refused to divulge specific details on those to be charged to court.

Many members of the party which formed government at the centre for 16 years are already facing corruption trial, but some were only quizzed.

But the party has continued to accuse the government of witch-hunting its members, an allegation the current administration denies.

The allegations and counter-allegations on corruption took a new dimension when Lai Mohammed, minister of information, released lists of “looters” last week.

Former governors, ex-senators and those who are not members of the PDP were also listed as looters.

Nigeria and Switzerland signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to pave the way for the return of illegally acquired assets, the west African country said.

Switzerland said in December that it would return to Nigeria around $321 million in assets seized from the family of former military ruler Sani Abacha via a deal signed with the World Bank.

Since taking office in 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari has sought help from several nations to recover money he said was taken from public coffers of the OPEC member, which is Africa’s biggest oil producer and has the continent’s largest economy.

Buhari’s spokesman said in an emailed statement that the memorandum of understanding ratified was between Nigeria, Switzerland and the International Development Association, (IDA), the World Bank’s fund for the world’s poorest countries.

“The return of illegal assets will not only boost the administration’s anti-corruption drive, but also provide additional funds for critical infrastructure,” said the spokesman in the statement.

Separately, Buhari also signed an agreement with Singapore on Monday for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and capital gains, the spokesman’s statement said.

Donald Trump Jr. and his wife are reportedly pulling the plug on their marriage.
Vanessa Trump filed divorce papers on Thursday in Manhattan Supreme Court, according to multiple reports.

The New York Daily News said the couple’s divorce was listed as “uncontested.”
Trump, a top executive at the Trump Organization and President Trump's oldest son, married Vanessa, a former model, in 2005. The pair, both 40, has five children.

Neither has publicly commented on their split.

Vanessa Trump was taken to the hospital as a precaution last month after opening a letter containing white powder. The substance, accompanied by a letter calling Trump Jr. "an awful, awful person," turned out to be corn starch.
