An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Iyiorji, in Isu, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has been murdered by gunmen.
The cleric was reportedly shot at his residence on Sunday and died on Monday night.
Reacting to Iyiorji’s death, the Muslim Rights Concern, Abuja chapter, charged the authorities to arrest and prosecute the killers.
In a statement jointly signed its chairman, Salahudeen Ustaz Yunus and spokesperson, Luqman Leleye, MURIC also condoled with the Ebonyi State Muslim community.
“May Allah enable the Government do the needful in getting to the root of the circumstances surrounding his attack by the dare-devils.
“May Allah make it easy for each and every one of us to strive hard in pleasing Allah before our destined period of death,” the statement read.
Also reacting to the incident, Disu Kamor, the Executive Chairman of Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC Nigeria) said, “As we mourn the death of the Shaykh, and commiserate with his family and immediate community, we call on the governments of the South-Eastern region of Nigeria to take responsibility for the lives and properties of the Muslims living in the region, and save them from incessant attacks by those determined to exterminate them and eradicate the practice of Islam in the region.
“We call on the Nigerian government to act now to ensure that no Nigerian carries a price tag as a result of the religion he or she practises anywhere in Nigeria.”
