Alezy:I think you're the one that misunderstood. A woman that chooses to submit to her husband (not everyone is Christian) is different from people thinking that women are worth less than men. Firstly, do you believe that women are second class citizens compared to men? And that women are worth less than men? Keeping in mind that the bible says all men are created equal. If your answer is no to this question then we have no problem. ![]() |
Alezy:what he bas sais is true though. And yes the comparison is the same thing because race and gender are not things you can choose. You do not like it when a white man forces you to submit same way a woman would not like it if you forced her to submit. It is a choice. What if you were born a woman and your parent did not allow you to go to school and you were married to an old man by force? Would you like it? Nope. |
bughead:At least your views are consistent ![]() |
bughead:First, why must you generalise all women? If I say all blacks are monkeys you will be angry. Second, what of all the guys that ask for sex on NL naa? Aren't they also foolish. The amount of times I've seen NL guys say they want to bleep Nicki Minaj or Kim kardashian no one said anything to them ![]() |
noblegrex:So something that gives women and girls the same rights as men in this country is like tissue? ![]() Something that will protect both women and men from domestic violence, give young girls in the north access to education and make sure both men and women serve the same amount of time in jail for the same crime (women normally get less) and host of other beneficial things is like tissue paper? Okay. But I advise you go to Saudi Arabia where your views are more accepted. Where women are stoned for being raped. If it was race equality bill now it would be a different story. |
noblegrex:what does this have to do with gender equality bill? Do people even know what that bill entails? |
bughead:Hian. Must she accept the offer of every guy that begs her? What if she doesn't like him? Why can't she beg the guy that she likes? After people will say freedom of speech. When one guy begged dj cuppy for date everyone congratulated him now a woman did the same thing suddenly all women are foolish Abegi |
LucifersTongue:Gbam!! All these people don't even know how GMOs are made and how much they have helped countries. The golden rice made in Europe is fortified with so much vitamin A that it can help so many poor children going blind but the crazy conspiracy theorists would rather let them go blind. GMOs are easy to farm, cheap and produce 200% more yield. It's really the only cure to world hunger and these people are here cooking up non-existent conspiracies. In the US they've been eating GMOs since 1994 and not one person has developed an illness or died due to it. |
Emmagenius:This is just a conspiracy. That's not true at all. Saying this means you don't understand the science behind it. A quick Google search will also prove that you are overreacting. Besides what will he gain from depopulating Nigeria? We buy his products if anything he would try to multiply us. God Nigerians are so cynical. |
Sprintson:People abroad have been eating GMOs since 1994 and most GMOs are FDA approved. 80% of food in the US is genetically modified. People that say GMOs are evil are just fear mongering and you shouldn't believe them. It makes the work of farmers very easy and is the only real solution to world hunger we have at the moment. Bump Feel free to add your own opinions. Seriously, no other opinions? Sha it's not by force |
porozhniy:A lot of the time these boys don't even want to go to school in the first place. If you give them scholarship money they would rather use it for other things. It's just that in some parts of the country girls are not allowed to go to school in the first place. I think for the boys, rather than scholarship, a good role model should go around and organise workshops where they can learn the importance of going to school. |
They would have given him scholarship to Cambridge naa ![]() |
eldav:Whilst in most other developed countries this act would be sexist, in Nigeria it's warranted because girls don't have much incentive to go to school/their parents don't allow them. This kind of scholarship is especially needed in the north. |
Now firstly before anyone accuses me of being a feminist, I am not. I am simply an egalitarian. I feel the label feminist is biased towards the female gender and doesn't consider the plight of men. I'm writing this because I've noticed a lot of sexist sentiments on this website from both men and women. And a lot of people in this country think we do not need gender equality for religious/cultural reasons. I'm here to clear up most misconceptions about gender equality. 1. Gender equality is not just to benefit women. This is the biggest misconception. People especially Africans believe that the idea of gender equality is to benefit only women. This is not true. The idea of gender equality looks to even out the playing field between men and women. No gender should have more societal benefits than the other. In the bible, God created all men equal. All creation are equal in his sight. No where does it say that women are lesser creatures in the bible. If that were the case, God wouldn't have used so many females for his purposes. i.e. Queen Esther, prophetess Deborah, Ruth, Mary mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene etc. If there is gender equality, all cases of rape will be treated equally. When a man is a victim of rape people will laugh at him and not take him seriously. If a woman is accused of rape people will blame her, call her a liar and even in extreme cases she is punished for being raped (in Saudi Arabia). When there is equality this won't happen. Both male and female rape accusations are taken very seriously. Same goes for domestic violence. On the issue of leave, men can also be allowed to take paternity leaves. And in the issue of who provides for the family and who cooks and cleans, both parents share the responsibility equally. It's not just the mother that will cook and clean and it's not just a man that will earn money especially not in this harsh economic climate where a family can not feed on one income alone. Also the idea of women taking all the money in a divorce settlement won't be allowed in an equal society. 2. Equal opportunity does not mean equal outcome This is a misconception especially in the camp of women. Women that think that it is because of a sexist society we don't have a female president or many females in science/technology/engineering fields. This is simply not true. Granted in some soceities women are not given certain opportunities but in the ones that do have equal opportunities, most women aren't very interested in the post of president or aren't interested in scientific professions. That is not any mans fault. 3. Gender equality is not an enemy of our African culture. If you truly know what gender equality is you wouldn't think it goes against African culture. It is something we should accept. Culture evolves. We adapted our culture to allow Christianity and Islam we can do same for equality and tolerance (which are even tenets in our faiths) Think of it this way, do you like it when people of other races think you are inferior by virtue of your skin colour, a genetic trait you have no control over? No. So why should anybody be considered inferior by virtue of their gender which is also a genetic trait you can not choose? If we could choose wouldn't we all choose to be men who in the past and in some societies today are still first class citizens? Why would anyone choose to be a woman? Is it fair to you? No it's not! Racism and sexism are the same thing. Both can not be justified by anything. What if a white said according to the bible whites are Gods chosen people and blacks are useless because the religion originated where mostly whites/Mediterraneans were? Would you like it? Would you accept that God favours whites/Asians more than blacks? No. Let us all live in peace amongst each other. No one should be a second class citizen because of their race, gender, tribe or religion. Thanks. |
FTBOY:Really so that means people like Saraki, Dasuki, Metuh et all aren't men? Admit it majority of the people you hear in the news for corruption scandals are men. Look at the state of this country. Is it not only men that have been in power? Anyway that doesn't mean I'm saying only men are corrupt. Just saying both men and women are capable of being power hungry. |
FTBOY:Yet if a man does this same thing and I say such I will be attacked by every man on here. Both men and women are capable of being power hungry. By your logic men shouldn't be given power either because there are men that have done much worse. |
These are supposed to be our leaders of tomorrow How can we have hope for the future of this country? |
No. It's not needed. A period does not make one incapable of working. Useless issues like this trivialize the real issues women (and some men) are facing in society. If the woman is having serious pains she can say that she is sick and maybe not come for one day. But for the whole thing? No way. |
babasolution:Is this necessary? ![]() How is this comment relevant to the discussion? If you are angry that someone said most men are rapists then it's not okay to say all feminist are rapist. Just ignore it. Two wrongs don't make a right. |
I am glad the perpetrators have been caught. So many cases like this go unreported. I hope the police take the necessary actions and justice takes its course. This will serve as deterrent for future rapists |
mccoy47:My brother, I understand exactly where you are coming from and I agree with what you have said but you have to understand that this is Nigeria. Women are still treated as second class citizens in this country. There are people that believe that women are subservient to men. This is not so. The bible says that all men (that is men and women) are equal in the eyes of the lord. None of God's creation is worth more than another. It's the same way in the past whites believed that black people are subservient to them. One cannot choose their race or sex. No one should be discriminated along those lines. You also have to understand that gender equality is not something that should benefit just women. We have to change our attitudes. In this country, if a woman reports a rape accusation people will not take her seriously. People will even say that it is her fault she got raped. If we have this kind of attitude how on earth will people then take men who are rape victims seriously? The same goes for domestic violence. People don't take women seriously when they say their husbands beat them so how will people take seriously men that are abused by their wives? True gender equality means that both men and women are treated fairly in the eyes of the law. True gender equality means that women and men will serve equal amount of time in prison for the same crime. Men should not spend more time in jail because they are men. It is not fair. True gender equality means that men too are within their rights to request for paternity leave. It is not only the woman that loves the child or that can take care of a child. True gender equality means that in a household both the man and the woman should work to earn an income especially in this harsh economic climate. It is not possible or fair for a man to be the only one feeding the whole family because of our backwards cultural values. And if any parent wishes to stay at home or cook it is also their choice. It is not only women that cook. The best chefs in the world are men. Sorry for this long write up but I just want you to understand that the idea of gender equality in this country is misunderstood. It is not a bad thing and I'm sad the bill did not get passed. This is not only a sad thing for women but also for men. Even in the issue of women presidents, that is not the fault of gender inequality or sexism. Equal opportunity will not always give equal outcome. If any successful, hardworking woman with a vision decides she wants to run for president no one will stop her. It is just that no woman in this country has such vision yet. The most successful and rich black woman on earth is a Nigerian. If she wants to run for president she can. It is just that she has shown no interest. If only more women in this country had an attitude like Malala Yousafzai there would be progress. Rather people are more interested in make ups and how to marry the richest husband. |
