Politics / EDO 2020: Obaseki’s Icarus Complex by TheSaxophonist: 7:30am On Jul 25, 2020
By Ufuoma Thomas
There are eerie similarities between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and Icarus, the son of Daedalus, the famous craftsman in Greek mythology. As the story goes, Icarus and his father attempted to escape from prison using wings that the older man constructed from feathers and wax.

Icarus’ father warned him about complacency and hubris and asked that he flew neither too low nor too high, so that the sea’s dampness would not clog his wings or the sun’s heat melt them.

Icarus ignored his father’s instructions and flew very close to the sun. Then the wax in his wings melted and he fell into the sea. The moral of the myth is the need for personal ambitions to be guided by knowledge, balance and self-discipline.

The absence of these qualities in personal, professional or political dealings is now globally known as the Icarus Complex, which many, who know, say Obaseki is suffering acutely from. This was first made public by the governor’s first cousin and acclaimed filmmaker, Dr. Don-Pedro Obaseki, who on the eve of the 2016 election said Obaseki is an accustomed traitor, who could not be trusted with power and, therefore, undeserving of the people’s votes.

However, the people were swayed by the robust and rousing promises of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, a leader they had implicit confidence in and who vowed and assured the people that Obaseki would continue with his legacy and take the state further than he did. That, of course, was all that the people needed to trust him with their mandate.

What Obaseki met on the ground was a feasible and functional template, which he only needed to build upon. Alas, he came with a different agenda that is self-serving at best and hideous at worst and which has, unfortunately, plunged the state into a quicksand.

Obaseki has come full circle. He has unravelled as a patently retrogressive and power-drunk, who cannot be trusted with public office. He is now sold on his faux invincibility and has crossed into the age of hubris during which he started fighting many avoidable battles. He also, wilfully weaned himself of those who could steer him aright.

Things are so bad for him right now that at no time in recent memory had a people unanimously and openly made it known that they were better off with a pre-schooler than him as a governor.

Without a doubt, his desire for a second term is legitimate but his wanton mismanagement of the state and the people, as well as his massive ego, which is a kind of deformity akin to virulent cancer that is constantly metastasising to the point of self-consummation, has turned him into an anathema in the state.

No government or society can survive without the private sector, yet Obaseki’s intolerance and scant regard for the rule of law with the consequent inability to attract investments has almost driven the private sector in the state into extinction. It is the same intolerance that has seen him engage in several confrontations with many Edo elders, notably Oshiomhole and one of Edo State’s most illustrious sons, Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo.

Despite several rebuttals that he has no interest in the governorship of the state, Obaseki has been using every available means to throw mud at the successful businessman and philanthropist. But, instead of rolling in the mud with him, Capt Hosa, as he is fondly called, has maintained an avuncular and dignified stance.

A businessman, who has conquered the air, land and sea and with honours from all over the world, Capt. Hosa is not just an epitome of integrity and incorruptibility, he is a straightforward individual, who does not shy away from taking responsibility for his actions.

Capt Hosa has told, whoever cares to listen, that the only thing close to his heart now is giving back to humanity from the abundance of what God has blessed him with, not a political office.

Still, Obaseki paid no heed to this admonition as he continued to denigrate and deride a man whose ingenuity birthed among other economic concerns, the $750 million Wells Hosa Green House Farm in Ovia North-East area of the state, which stands on 27 hectares of land and has the capacity for 28 hydroponic greenhouses, projected in the first instance to generate 25,000 direct jobs and 60,000 indirect jobs.

That’s just one out of many things he does for his people. Captain Hosa’s philanthropic activities are the stuff of legends. It is this selfless man that Obaseki wanted to get rid of.

Well, the governorship election is just a few weeks away and the mood in the state is already upbeat. Many cannot wait for September 19 to come, so they can lawfully replace him with Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC. And it is not hard to see why there is so much expectation and enthusiasm towards Ize-Iyamu’s expected electoral victory.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu is a thoroughbred Edo son and lawyer, whose political experience is peerless. With the return of Nigeria to democratic rule in 1999, he was appointed as Chief of Staff to former Governor Lucky Igbinedion. When Igbinedion was re-elected for a second term, he elevated Ize-Iyamu to the position of Secretary to the State Government.

He went on to serve as Director-General of Oshiomhole’s second term campaign organisation. Beyond all these, the people have come to embrace his SIMPLE Agenda to rejuvenate and rebuild the state. The SIMPLE agenda, therefore, is centred on Security and Social Welfare, Infrastructure Development and Urban Renewal, Manpower Development, Public-Private Partnership, Leadership by Example, as well as Employment and Empowerment Scheme.

“The summary of the SIMPLE agenda with its deep intentions and objectives, are unified in purpose and conception, showcasing a deliberateness that is vital for progress and development. As you all know, unfortunately, these are traits missing in the Edo leadership as presently constituted, where the scarce resources rather being used for the betterment of its citizens, are channelled to promote violence and thuggery, victimisation and plunder,” he said.

It is yet to be seen how Obaseki, with his current political misadventures, intends to beat the September 19 defeat. Certainly, not with the odds increasingly stacked against him. He’s picked too many but wrong political battles and definitely set to stew in his own juice, come September 19.

Politics / Southern Kaduna Genocide: Elrufai’s Shameless Negligence by TheSaxophonist: 7:14am On Jul 25, 2020
While I have thoughtfully struggled to maintain decorum and hold my tongue in the wake of the southern Kaduna crisis, mainly for the purpose of political correctness and facts gathering; it has however become crystal clear that both Nasir Elrufai and the Buhari-led administrations are either a party to the Southern Kaduna crisis or guilty of gross negligence.

From Chikun to Giwa, Birnin Gwari to Kajuru, we have been furnished with substantiated report of gruesome attacks on Nigerians by suspected "Fulani terrorists". These killings have continued in the most sadistic fashion with both the Kaduna State government and the Buhari administration turning a blind eye.

Southern Kaduna has become an odious killing field, reminiscent of Karadzic's Srebrenica genocide and Kampuchea under the Khmer Rouge guerrilla.

While marauding Fulani terrorists occasionally foment crisis across various Nigerian States, they however continue on a genocidal conquest in Southern Kaduna, with what appears to be the tacit support of both the Kaduna State government and the Buhari-led administration.

For Mallam Nasir Elrufai (the Kaduna State Governor), an ardent Sunni Islamic scholar and self-confessed Fulani supremacist, "the killings in Southern Kaduna are unavoidable reprisals".

Like the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob, the pint-sized cleric cum politician who once confessed to providing financial compensation to Fulani terrorists, has "advised" the people of Southern Kaduna to avoid taking up arms in the face of ethnic cleansing.

Mallam Elrufai, who is infamous for his inflammatory rhetoric has tried desperately to downplay the severity of the Southern Kaduna horrors despite growingg public indignation. The capricious governor who once threatened to return international electoral observers to their countries in "body bags" during the last general elections, continues to evade accountability following every attack in Southern Kaduna.

It is generally accepted that the Governor of a State is the chief security officer of that State; but either by intention or immedicable incompetence, Nasir Elrufai has failed to provide security for the people of Southern Kaduna since assuming office in 2015. It is not farfetched to presume that this might not be unconnected with the miserly numbers he got from Southern Kaduna in the last election and so like his political mentor in Aso rock, he has decided to apply the disgraceful "95/5% rule". Whichever way, the Mallam has failed in his most important responsibility; guaranteeing the right to life of the people of Kaduna. Governance is not a birthright. If you can not do the job, please step aside, Mallam.

Politics / Re: Hadiza El-Rufai: I'm Married To A Governor; I'm Not Part Of Government by TheSaxophonist: 5:26am On May 29, 2020
MetaPhysical:
There is a part of history of North Nigeria that many Southerners are unaware of but which if care is not taken would also repeat itself in South. It has to do with alcohol.

In the early days of colonialism spirits and liquor was imported for the whitemen consumption only. Many of them bootlegged the product and sold to natives. Observers soon picked up that liquor reacts differently in the whiteman system than it does with the blackman, when consumed in same quantity and under same conditions and similarity of physicallity. So they raised duties and price to limit the availability and distribution of it. At one point they requested legislation back in UK to forbid importation of spirit to the natives in Southern Nigeria. Bottlers and merchants back in England suffered loss of revenue. They lobbied and put pressure on their government not to restrict trade in liquor. So the importation resumed and availability and consumption of liquor in Southern Nigeria was no longer prohibited.

Its distribution slowly crept up to the North as the business boomed, particularly with RNC, which later became UAC as the sole distributor. As part of their negotiated peace and treaties with the English, Northern rulers drew a boundary for liquor trading and missionary work. Therefore the North had penal codes that made liquor consumption a crime. When missionary penetrated into some non-muslim parts in North, liquor also went along with it. Everywhere bible was received, liquor was also introduced.

Liquor is a weapon. It is a mind altering chemical that when consumed suppresses certain aspects of cognition usually used in processing and responding to impulses and circumstances in the immediate sorrounding and interactions. Therefore an alcohol consumer will concede ...or fail to recognize risks and threats sufficiently for self preservation....and thus in his vulnerable state is exploited. The colonials were ready to do battle and posess our lands, and in fact they fought wars in Lagos, in Ijebu, in Benin, in Sokoto, in Kano and in Bauchi but they also took many dispossessed us of many lands simply by using alcohol to alter our senses and put us in a position to be easily exploited with minimal or zero casualty.

Kaduna was the traditional land of the collective people we call Southern Kaduna today. Kaduna was leased from them when Colonials relocated their headquarters from Lokoja to Kaduna. Bible and alcohol were the two legacies they gained from colonial government. After colonials handed power to regional government, the fulanis in power began a programme of expansion to subdue and hold the North under their spiritual and political control. Gradually intoxication of the Kaduna majority ethnic groups (kajuru, gwari, and so on) took a new turn and trend. To cut the story short.....The majority number gradually became the minority in authority and with that they also lost vast areas of their ancestral homes. In 2015 or 2017 (can't remember which) Governor El Rufai sought to modify the alcohol consumption penal code that had always been in practice and it was meant to prohibit alcohol generally for everyone, muslim and non-muslim....but either by commission or ommission, the prohibition achieved the opposite. It is like telling a child i dont want to see you play ball outside because if you kick the ball and break someone's glass window I will have to pay for it. Meanwhile other children in the neighborhood gather everyday outside and play ball. Then you watch the child get impatient and with annoyance. So you say, okay Im going to just ban all children from playing ball outside. So you give the order. Guess what....those children will find a field somewhere else outside your sight and earshot. What the child does not see or hear also pacifies him into thinking no one else is playing ball and so he doesnt feel cheated...he calms. Southern Kaduna have been drinking alcohol before El Rufai was born.....he might ban it in Kaduna, for muslims.......he cannot enforce its ban on the Christians of Southern Kaduna. The effect is they will stay consumed and continue to lose their ancestral and tribal lands and chiefdoms. Alcohol did this to them.

Alcohol has become a status statement in the South and we have become engrossed in its consumption that we have an addiction, just like in Southern Kaduna, that our vulnerability grows rapidly and put us at risk of exploitation by the North. They are using weapons now to seed terror and intimidation, a time is coming that they will not need weapon....our intoxication is sufficient to yield to them while they slowly peel away our rights and force upon us a two class system...one law for them , a different law for us......just as they did to the Southern Kaduna.

In the Rufai household they probably mock the Southern Kadunas as drunks. They treat them as one for all we can see. Their mockery has crossed over to the web and lately voiced by their son Bello....who once promised gang rape and derided Igbo, with a repeat derision of Ipob few days ago in a tweet. Igbo people are not at the same level, academically or socially with a small boy whose father is an accidental achiever. So what could inform such a arrogance and filthy disregard. The state of mind! Alcohol has deeply altered our state of mind in South. Even when are not intoxicated, our reasoning habits are flawed....the toxins and poison in our blood keep us sedated and dispossed of fundamental responses to self-preservation. This applies to Yoruba, it applies to SS.

I know you honestly think what you've written here is smart but it's a shit ton of garbage!

Health / Covid-19- Why Nigeria's Cases May Be Hire Than Reported by TheSaxophonist: 7:17am On Mar 25, 2020
On the 24th of March, local news media in Nigeria revealed the president's chief of staff and a serving State governor, as latest high profile persons who have contracted the novel corona virus. While many Nigerians on social media have showed excitement, with some even claiming the virus is a scourge from "God" to purge the Nation of it's corrupt leaders; many have paid less attention to the alarmingly low number of confirmed cases announced by Nigeria's CDC (center for disease control), in relation to other nations who reported index cases later than Nigeria's

While South Africa has currently reported over 550 cases, Nigeria’s CDC says Africa's most populous nation has confirmed only 44 cases thus far. One likely reason for Nigeria's confirmed low positive cases is that the country had tested only 152 people as at the 22nd of March. Compared with South Africa which has conducted over 16,000 tests so far and Algeria which has reported over 200 cases.

Low capacity
Africa's largest oil producer and most populous Nation's slow test pace, is ironically attributed to its lean healthcare infrastructure and not a personnel deficiency. The entire number of ventilators across the country is not exactly known, but is widely believed to be grossly insufficient. With the World Bank pledging over $15 Billion US to help developing countries combat the spread of the deadly virus; Chinese billionaire "Jack Ma", has also reportedly donated vhjj bhj to Nigeria but many Nigerians stil doubt the honesty and capacity of the government to protect citizens.

In the event of a full blown outbreak, Nigeria's death toll might attain record levels, if the government fails to employ new approaches to public safety and improved transparency..
