feel this photograph is one of the most iconic photos of the 20th century and arguably the most sobering photo imaginable.

The picture dates to sometime in the summer of 1941 in Ukraine. It depicts in the simplest and starkest terms exactly what war means and what war is. The young man is a trooper in the Einsatzgruppen, a corps of paramilitaries tasked by the Nazi command with ‘liquidating undesirables’ from all newly conquered territories. They followed behind Hitlers conquering horde and more than any other element of Hitler’s ranks made the twisted visions of National Socialism come to life. The horrifying irony is that this meant murder on a scale never seen before and hopefully never seen again.

The unidentified young mother and child were two of the countless human beings that were ripped from their existence by the unprecedented wave of cruelty that engulfed the world between 1914 - 1954.

If war has a face, I feel even it would be streaked with tears should it ever gaze upon this image.

.The Japanese regime glorified violence and a racist ideology. This photo and its use, of two Japanese soldiers in China in 1937, captures something of that glorification.

These two Japanese soldiers, Toshiaki Mukai and Tsuyoshi Noda, held a competition to see who could behead the most Chinese soldiers - most of whom had already surrendered.

Perhaps most chilling is the realization that a Japanese newspaper thought it a good idea to publish this, including the score at the time: 106 versus 105 human beings.

This photo was taken in Germany in 1936. August Landmesser is the sole person in this photo who chooses not to give the Hitler greeting when Adolf Hitler visits Hamburg.

This photo tells us how hard it is to remain loyal to our principles when group pressure, propaganda and a police state all try to push us in a different direction.

I am quite certain I would not have been August Landmesser. This photo humbles me.
