Air Force jet pilots going to Russia for further training Russia being the latest addition.

A report has it that about 10 pilots from 2 Squadron at AFB Makhado have been selected for further training in Russia. This is a direct outflow of a co-operation agreement signed between the defence ministers of the two countries, Afrikaans weekly Rapport said.

Four pilots are already undergoing training in Cuba and according to SA National Defence Force Chief General Solly Shoke, agreements have also been entered into with the United States and the United Kingdom on various aspects of military training.

The United Nations has invited South African companies to register and bid for billions of dollars worth of tenders issued each year by the organisation.

Sean Purcell, Chief Field Procurement Service, UN Secretariat Procurement Division, told delegates at the recent Denel Aerospace, Maritime and Defence conference in Pretoria that South Africa is ideally located to be a supplier to the UN, but is not a major one at the moment.

He pointed out that the UN spent $17.2 billion on procurement in 2014, up from over $16 billion in 2013. South Africa accounted for .98% of total spend of the United Nations last year at $169 million – however, 90% of this came from a single air services contract awarded to a local company. Purcell noted that without the contract, SA spend would have been around $10 million.

South Africa will host a large-scale military exercise featuring several African nations from October 19 to November 7‚ Lieutenant-General Derrick Mgwebi‚ the South African Defence Force’s Chief of Joint Operations‚ said on Wednesday.

He said the aim of the Amani Africa II field training exercise‚ which is being conducted by the African Union‚ is to evaluate the state of readiness of the African Standby Force (ASF) and to exercise its rapid deployment capability (RDC).

The exercise will be held at the Army Combat Training Centre in the Northern Cape.

The exercise was originally planned to be conducted in Lesotho in in November and December last year. However‚ due to the political and security situation in Lesotho at the time‚ it was not feasible to conduct the exercise in the kingdom‚ Lt Gen Mgwebi said.

About 5‚400 members from the military‚ police and civilian components representing four of the regional economic regions of the AU will participate in the exercise.

The countries contributing most of the troops for the exercise are Angola‚ Botswana‚ Democratic Republic of the Congo‚ Lesotho‚ Malawi‚ Mozambique‚ Namibia‚ South Africa‚ Swaziland‚ Zambia and Zimbabwe. Other contributing and/or participating countries involved in the exercise are Algeria‚ Burundi‚ Egypt‚ Ethiopia‚ Gambia‚ Ghana‚ Kenya‚ Nigeria‚ Rwanda and Uganda.

@AUGUSTUS HERE IS THE LIST OF THE ARMS PURCHASED BY YOUR RAG TAG ARMY AND THERE IS NO MENTION OF HELICOPTER GUNSHIPS....FIGHTER JETS....AND THE LIST LOOK SO UNPROFESSIONAL LIKE IT WAS DRAFTED BY A SIX GRADE CHILD.

The Nigerian Times (NT) has obtained the alleged list of weaponry items bought for the needs of the Nigerian army last year.

This comes after the former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, shared images of weapons attained by ex-president Goodluck Jonathan to fight the Boko Haram insurgency.

Indications have emerged that a massive supply of military hardware was received on January 27 of the last year. The NT reports, with reference to its military source that some of the purchased items were computerised and manned with cameras capable of detecting enemy location from long distance. This was to ensure more effective fight against the terrorists.

RAG TAG ARMY
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged to investigate allegations made by Amnesty International that accuse senior Nigerian military officials of war crimes violations in the offensive against radical Islamist terror group Boko Haram.

STORIES OF A RAG TAG ARMY
When Islamist militants raided the northeastern Nigerian village of Izghe, killing 90 people, some government troops dropped their weapons, stripped off their uniforms and fled in civilian clothes, according to two soldiers who were at the scene.

The soldiers said the troops were angry their monthly pay had been cut in half to 15,000 naira ($92) without explanation, heightening their belief that money meant for them and their front-line fight against the Islamist militant group Boko Haram was being siphoned off by officials in Abuja, the capital.

“Somebody is sitting comfortably in Abuja stealing our money, and we are here facing Boko Haram fire every day,” Shu’aibu, a lance corporal, said in a June 11 interview in Yola, capital of Adamawa state. He spoke on the condition that his surname wasn’t published because he’s not authorized to comment.

@AUGUSTUS WHERE IS THE MONEY FOR THE MILITARY HARDWARE??
The arms purchase probe panel that was set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe contracts executed during the administrations of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has started sitting with not less than 13 allegedly indicted retired generals opting for plea bargain.

A highly placed defence source at the weekend told Nigerian Pilot Sunday that the retired generals numbering 13 out of the 19 that are expected to be quizzed by the probe panel have already approach some members of the panel for amicable settlement of the matter than appearing before the panel.

According to the source, a former National Security Adviser is allegedly the arrowhead of the negotiation, if the members of the panel will accept their request. The security source further added that the 13 retired military chiefs are willing to refund N1 trillion to the federal government as part of the plea bargain arrangement

NIGERIAN RESERVES FALLING

The Central Bank of Nigeria has revealed in its data for the month of September that there has been a fall in Nigeria’s foreign reserves.Foreign exchange reserves fell by 3.14 per cent to $30.48 billion by September 23 from $31.47 billion a month ago, central bank data showed on Wednesday.

SOUTH AFRICA A TOP FDI DESTINY IN AFRICA
The investment pipeline into South Africa remains robust, according to the acting head of investment promotion and inter-departmental clearing house at the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) Yunus Hoosen. He was speaking at a seminar hosted by the department on the state of foreign direct investment (FDI) in South Africa.

He said South Africa attracted R43bn in FDI in the previous financial year. He explained that due to the cyclical nature of investment it should be expected that both inward and outward investment stock may vary from year to year.

“Over a protracted period of time, South Africa has maintained its position as the top FDI destination in Africa as well as a prolific investor on the African continent. Recent data indicate that this trend is continuing based on the 2014/2015 investment pipeline and the impact of various government programmes across the South African economy,” he said.

SOUTH AFRICA FOREIGN RESERVES STOOD AT $46 BILLION DOLLARS

The Central Bank governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has defended his decision not to further devalue the naira despite the pressure on the currency of Africa’s top oil producer amid the global price crash.Godwin Emefiele is also under pressure from foreign investors and Nigerian manufacturers, who say his policies are worsening the oil-dependent country’s economic woes.

But the governor, on Monday, maintained that the naira was 'appropriately priced,' telling the Financial Times Africa Summit he would not allow a policy of 'interminable adjustment' as this would only cause more pain for Nigeria’s 170 million people. The naira lost more than 20 per cent of its value between the start of the oil price fall in July 2014 and February, the last time the Central Bank allowed the currency to depreciate.

There are strong indications that the ongoing military operations against insurgents in the North-East may have been seriously hampered by lack of modern military hardware and the prevalence of aging equipment in the Armed Forces.

It was learnt that the military had been faced with the difficult challenge of using mostly refurbished military hardware in the critical campaign against the deadly members of the Boko Haram sect.

A good number of the military hardware in the country such as the Armoured Personnel Carriers, the Alpha Fighter Jets, the MIG Fighter Jets and the Helicopter gunships that were being used in the ongoing fight against the insurgents were acquired between 1979 and 1982 by the Alhaji Shehu Shagari regime.

A senior military source, on the condition of anonymity, said on Thursday that the successive military administrations that took over the governance of the country did not pay adequate attention to the importation of military tanks, fighter jets, helicopter gunships, APCs and other hardware.

It was further learnt that the situation persisted from 1999 under President Olusegun Obasanjo to the Goodluck Jonathan administration. It was gathered that Shagari had obtained the hardware to position the Nigerian Army as a force in the sub region.

The correspondent gathered that a good number of the APCs deployed during critical military operations against the Boko Haram insurgents had either failed to fire or had broken down in the middle of action.

The reserves which fell by $940m (N185 billion), about two weeks ago, has fallen again by $210m, CBN latest data have revealed.
The reserves now stand at $30.48 billion, a fall from $30.69 billion two weeks ago, and $31.47 million a month earlier.
Though the reserves fell by 3.14 percent by the month, 23.03 percent depletion has been recorded, relative to the September 2014 figures.

The central bank has used the reserves to support the local currency, selling dollars to bureau de change operators twice a week, as it narrows the gap between the official and black market rates.
The reserves crossed the $30 billion mark in July, when it saw an increment of 5.6 percent from $29.03 billion in June, to $30.69 billion.

In August, the CBN indicated that foreign exchange reserves rose by $350 million (N70 billion) to $31.43 billion, but has since then fallen twice, with no succour in view.

The latest available statistics from Higher Education South Africa (HESA) demonstrate that currently around 500,000 students are enrolled on a full-time basis at academic institutions across South Africa. This includes full universities, comprehensive universities and universities of technology. Statistics from 2001 and 2009 respectively show a cumulative increase in enrolment, across these institutions, of around 140,000 (35 per cent), from a figure of 401,000 in 2001 to 541,000 in 2009. This figure does not include the Further Education and Training Colleges (FET), where another c.125,000 students are currently enrolled across the country. The Department of Education in South Africa is aiming to increase this figure to a million by 2015.

According to the 2012 BP Statistical Energy Survey, South Africa had 2011 electricity production of 262.54 Terawatt-hours, a change of 1.1% from 2010 and equivalent to 1.19% of the world total.

The electricity supply industries of Southern Africa are dominated by the State owned utility of South Africa, ESKOM. ESKOM generates around two thirds of the electricity produced in the whole of Africa and is extending its transmission grid north into neighbouring sub-Saharan countries. Eskom provides about 95% of South Africa's electrical power and more than 60% of Africa's. It has been forecasted that by 2008 the country's electricity demand is expected to exceed supply capacity, and South African power exports have already been restricted.

ESKOM, with a generating capacity of 35 200 MW from 20 power stations, is one of the largest utilities in the world, and generates approximately 98% of South Africa's electricity. Generation is primarily coal-fired, but also includes a nuclear power station at Koeberg, two gas turbine facilities, two conventional hydroelectric plants, and two hydroelectric pumped-storage stations. The company also owns and operates the national transmission system.

ESKOM has a nominal generating capacity of 39 154 megawatts, although 4 201 megawatts of generating capacity is currently mothballed. Power from coal-fired generating plants amounts to 34 882 megawatts or 89,1 per cent of Eskom's nominal generating capacity.
