Diehl’s IRIS-T Surface Launched missile has successfully demonstrated its full performance envelope and achieved qualification after three firings at the Overberg Test Range last month. Diehl said the three guided firings were executed in different short- to medium-range and very low- to high-altitude scenarios and that all of them resulted in direct hits of the target drones. To prove the capabilities of IRIS-T SL, jet target drones of different sizes were used performing a large variety of realistic evasive manoeuvres. The first target was engaged at a distance of more than 30 km. The IRIS-T SL missile flight time was about one minute, reaching an altitude above 12 km. Despite an evasive manoeuvre involving changing direction and altitude, a direct hit of the target was achieved, proving the medium range capabilities of IRIS-T SL. The second firing was at very close range to the launch point to prove the missile´s short range engagement capabilities. During this firing, IRIS-T SL jettisoned its aerodynamic cover shortly after launch, immediately initiating a hard turn-over manoeuvre towards the low flying target. The entire engagement lasted less than 10 seconds and also ended with a direct hit. The third firing was carried out against a very small, fast and agile target drone featuring high agility and extreme manoeuvring capability. A direct hit was achieved at 12.5 km range and 1.5 km altitude even though the drone performed aggressive dive/pull-up evasive manoeuvres. The performance demonstration firings concluded a series of test firings as part of the IRIS-T SL system development. Having been contracted by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr for Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), representatives of the BAAINBw as well as the German Air Force witnessed IRIS-T SL’s performance in full accordance with the requirements of the German Air Force. IRIS-T SL is planned to be a component of the future German Air and Missile Defence System (TLVS). Diehl has used Overberg for testing in the past – for instance in mid-January 2014 the company tested the IRIS-T SL with the new CEAFAR active phased array radar from CEA Technologies in Australia, the BMD-Flex command, control and communication system from Terma in Denmark and the Oerlikon Skymaster battle management system from Rheinmetall Air Defence in Switzerland. A low-flying EADS Do-DT 25 jet target drone was destroyed at 20 km. Earlier test firings took place in November 2013. The IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium range) air defence system is a modular design featuring open system architecture, allowing it to use a variety of radars and control systems. It is being developed for Germany as a stop-gap to the Medium Extended Air Defence System (Meads) being produced by Lockheed Martin and MBDA and is a ground-launched version of the infrared homing IRIS-T in service with the South African Air Force. It has a sharp nose cone to reduce drag that is separated prior to approaching a target. Diehl Defence said the mobile, medium-range systems provide comprehensive 360 degree protection against air attacks by aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and guided weapons. They allow simultaneous engagement of several targets even at very short distances thanks to extremely short reaction times. The Denel Overberg Test Range (DOTR) is a missile and aircraft test range that provides turnkey flight test, system certification and performance evaluation services for missiles, rockets, bombs, guided munitions and aircraft. The range can manage and carry out air, ground and sea flight tests. It has the facilities to evaluate and measure the performance of aircraft, their avionics systems and their carriage and release of ordnance. The range is also able to conduct anti-tank tests, helicopter-based tests and electronic warfare tests. With more than 43 000 hectares of terrain and almost 70 km of uninhabited coastline, the Test Range is a perfect arena for testing stand-off weapon systems. Weapons tested at the DOTR include the Taurus Systems KEPD-350 stand-off missile, the MBDA Storm Shadow stand-off missile, the IRIS-T, Thales Starstreak, MBDA Mistral air defence missiles, Denel Dynamics Umkhonto surface-to-air missile, Umbani guided bomb kit and A-Darter air-to-air missile. |

About 227 members of the Nigerian Army serving with 3 Armoured Division in Jos, who were allegedly dismissed by the military authorities on Friday protested against their General Officer Commanding (GOC), asking for the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan. The soldiers who stormed the Plateau State NUJ Secretariat in Jos with placards said they were unjustly dismissed without any known offence and without the benefit of fair hearing. The leader of the protesting soldiers, Sergeant Abiona Elisha, said, “We were dismissed this week Tuesday from the service of the Nigerian Army after sending us to go and suffer fighting insurgency in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states. “All of a sudden, we were recalled to the barracks and made to face trial. Even in the trial, we were not given the chance to defend ourselves. They just took decision and dismissed us. We were not even told what our offences were during the so-called trial. “We are surprised that we can be treated like this in our own country. We were sent to fight insurgents without weapons. A lot of our colleagues were killed in the course of defending our fatherland. Even those who are in hospitals treating injuries they sustained from battle fields were also dismissed while still on hospital admission. “The worst situation is that families of our colleagues killed in Adamawa and Yobe are languishing in hunger as Nigerian Army refused to pay their entitlements. The soldiers called on the President and Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Kenneth Minimah, to intervene in their case and reinstate them. When contacted, Deputy Director of the 3 Armoured Division Jos, Col. Texas Chukwu, said : “I am not aware of the development; I just returned from Yola on Tuesday. So I am not aware of anything. Thank you. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/227-soldiers-protest-dismissal-by-3-armoured-division/199416/ |

Beeld reported that former soldiers of the SA Defence Force were part of a multinational team of private military experts on their way to Nigeria. The Afrikaans daily reported that this was at the request of the Nigerian government, and that the team of about 100 members would train Nigerian soldiers for a massive defence effort. The first goal of the soldiers, backed by South African expertise, would be to free the remaining Chibok schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram last year. Clayson Monyela, spokesperson for the department of international relations could not be reached for comment. |

Stories of Nigerian soldiers running away from Boko Haram militants have been widely reported - but low on ammunition and allocated vehicles that don't work, a former soldier says they are being outgunned and overpowered. "Imagine me and you are fighting," the soldier tells me. "We both have guns but while you are wearing a bullet proof vest, I'm carrying an umbrella." It is his way of explaining that the fight against Boko Haram is being undermined because the jihadists are often far better equipped than the soldiers. Abiona is 40 years old and has been in the Nigerian army since he was 17. Or I should say had been, because along with more than 200 others he was dismissed last week for disobeying orders. He was accused of fleeing rather than fighting but says it was a tactical withdrawal. He has survived several battles, in fact he sounds quite fearless, and wants to tell me about serious problems he encountered in the military. "I've committed no crime why should I be scared?" Abiona says. "I don't carry a gun or knife. My only weapon is my mouth." I have heard many reports of Boko Haram attacks where the soldiers ended up running away with the civilians. Traumatized parents separated from their children during the chaos have described to me how they saw troops pulling off their uniforms and fleeing. This is a rare chance to hear from the soldiers themselves. "It was 10:30 at night," says Abiona remembering one battle in Borno State. "Suddenly we saw Boko Haram very close to our trenches. Those of us with machine guns started firing and I can tell you that was a bad day for Boko Haram. We killed more than 80 of them." After the night-long battle his soldiers were low on ammunition but when they urgently called for more supplies each soldier was given just 10 rounds. Not surprisingly, the next encounter was disastrous. "Two days later Boko Haram were back," he tells me. "This time they had about 24 four-wheel drive vehicles, some with anti-aircraft guns mounted on them." Outgunned and with colleagues being shot dead around him, Abiona says they retreated and spent the next 11 hours on the run as the jihadists pursued them through the bush. There were other problems. He tells me about armoured vehicles that were in such poor mechanical condition they would just produce smoke and wouldn't move. During another encounter with the enemy in Adamawa State he says there were military vehicles that ran out of fuel. "What did you do?" I ask. "We had to abandon them and walk. You can't carry them on your head," was his blunt reply. Boko Haram seized the vehicles. Then in the battle for a place called Bazza he says their guns proved no match for the jihadists' firepower and so they again beat a hasty retreat. "They overpowered us and many died. Our mortars and rocket-propelled grenades wouldn't even explode they were so old," says Ibrahim, another dismissed soldier who was in Bazza, adding: "Because of the corruption in the nation it makes everything run down." The soldiers say they have learned that better equipment has recently been supplied to the troops but overall it seems the security situation is getting worse. Just over 18 months ago, I watched President Goodluck Jonathan address the nation on TV as he declared a state of emergency in the north east of Nigeria and promised a massive military operation against the jihadists. Within a few weeks I was bouncing along sandy tracks with the Nigerian military who were keen to show me some success. Nigerian soldiers patrol near Marte in 2013 We reached the just-liberated village of Marte, close to Lake Chad - along with a couple of other remote settlements it had been briefly held by Boko Haram. I met people who were mightily relieved that the black and white jihadist flags were no longer flying and were hopeful that schools would soon reopen. Back then it looked like Boko Haram would never hold territory again. This week I managed to get through on the phone to one of the people I'd met there. "Where are you?" I asked Abba. "We are all in Maiduguri city. There's not a single person left in Marte now. We all ran away with nothing but the clothes we were wearing," he said. His village is back in the hands of Boko Haram but as a sign of just how disastrous the military campaign has been, huge swathes of north-east Nigeria are now in the hands of the jihadists. Some may call the soldiers I met cowards. Others will say they were poorly equipped and badly let down. "I just thank God I'm alive," Ibrahim tells me, adding: "But I pray for our colleagues who died - we couldn't carry their corpses away. May their souls rest in peace." http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-30930767 |

Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) has finished building two FCS 5009 Patrol vessels, the first of their type to be built in South Africa. Another vessel of the same class is already in operation with the Cape Verdean Coast Guard. DSCT said it has prepared the vessels for outfitting with Reutech Sea Rogue weaponry; a system that includes a 20 mm cannon forward of the wheelhouse and two 12.7mm Browning guns fitted respectively port and starboard of the wheelhouse. The Sea Rogue can be operated by a hand controller and has an accurate target-tracking feature. Working with manufacturer Reutech, DSCT can install the weaponry in a matter of days. “The FCS 5009 is deliverable in two formats. It can be either a fast crew supply ship or a security patrol vessel,” says DSCT Chairman Sam Montsi, explaining that, though the vessels are complete and ready to go, they still possess flexibility. DSCT is able to carry out the final conversion for either option within a matter of weeks. They are also the first in their class to be outfitted with MTU engines that offer a better power to weight ratio for increased speed. “What this shows is the flexibility of Damen vessels,” continued Montsi. “Even though we build for stock, the design of the vessels means they are capable of accommodating a range of different features to match specific requirements.” “This continues our policy of building in Africa for Africa,” said Friso Visser, Sales Manager Africa for Damen, “and its makes us very proud to see our South African facility maintaining the Damen tradition of building technically advanced vessels to the highest standards. The versatile FCS 5009 Patrol boats have consistently shown themselves to be an ideal solution for patrolling an EEZ [Exclusive Economic Zone]. They have low operational costs, are very fuel efficient, have a competitive purchase price and, crucially, are easy to maintain. Overall, they provide a reasonable Total Cost of Ownership, making them attractive to countries that have a requirement to patrol an EEZ.” Cape Verde in January 2012 commissioned their 51 metre long Stan Patrol 5009 patrol vessel. The 5009 can carry 24 persons and has four engines (with four propellers), with a total power of 4 324 kW, for a speed of 23 to 35 knots. Damen is offering the type to the South African Navy to meet its Project Biro requirement for three offshore and three inshore patrol vessels. Armscor issued tenders for the vessels in December 2014, with a closing date of June 30 this year. This will be followed by a period of evaluation before any announcement is made on the successful tenderer or tenderers. DSCT also sees a big market for anti-piracy vessels, especially in the East African region. There is also huge demand for oil rig protection vessels – Damen has previously sold ten Sea Axe designs for counter-piracy missions in East Africa. These vessels are maintained in Cape Town. The shipyard has also been busy building a variety of vessels, including fisheries patrol vessels, tugs, dredgers, crew suppliers and pilot boats, including two tugs for the South African Navy. Damen maintains stocks of many of the most popular models of its vessels, enabling the company to supply them to customers on a commercial off-the-shelf basis. DSCT continues to invest in its facilities. The latest addition is Shed 9; its largest production hall yet that will allow it to work on vessels of all types up to 90 metres in length with full protection from the weather, dust and other adverse environmental factors. “The completion of the FCS 5009 Patrol boats and the opening of Shed 9 with its additional capabilities mark the start of a new phase for Damen Shipyards Cape Town and demonstrate the strength that comes with being a member of one of the world’s leading shipbuilding groups,” DSCT said. |
South African company Rippel Effect Systems has landed another contract for IGS-4S day/night sights for the Colombian Army which has now standardised on this item of equipment from Rippel for all its cavalry requirements. The company expects to complete installation on the whole Colombian Cascavel armoured combat vehicle fleet during next year. The IGS-4S was launched as a Rippel product two years ago and the technology is licensed from South African firm Vision 24 Observation Systems. The model selected by Colombia is the IGS-4S compact video sighting system, which can be utilised in conjunction with various vehicle-mounted weapons in calibres ranging from 7.62 mm to 125 mm. The system provides the operator with a 24/7 below-armour observation and ranging capability to fire the weapon in all weather conditions, low visibility and darkness. Rippel Effect said the IGS-4S accommodates multiple sensors tailored to suit user requirements and weapon choice. As a single system it can be pre-programmed with ballistic aiming marks for any weapon and the various types of ammunition for the selected weapon. IGS-4S has the additional ability to range distance to target. It has a laser rangefinder, day camera, uncooled thermal imaging and multi-function screen, which displays aim points and system parameters, as well as controls for the thermal camera. The system is optimised for installation in small vehicles where space is of prime consideration. The company has developed a video bore sighting device as well as a day/night sight, the VK-RSS-02, that can be used with the secondary weapon on armoured vehicles (such as the 7.62 machine gun on the Cascavel). Both the bore-sight and the VK-RSS-02 integrate seamlessly with the IGS-4S System. The video bore sight makes bore sighting possible by one person from inside the vehicle. The VK-RSS-02 makes it possible to use the secondary weapon from below-armour. The VK-RSS-02 can also be used as hand-held thermal imaging device. Rippel Effect is known for its series of 40 mm grenade launchers and is focusing on three main products: its new less lethal six-shot multiple grenade launcher RLL37/38 which will be marketed in association with two of the world’s foremost less lethal ammunition manufacturers - Condor of Brazil and ALS of the US; the XRGL40 extended range 40 mm MGL and IGS-4S targeting and sighting system. The XRGL40 can fire low velocity, medium velocity and less lethal ammunition with very low port pressures, including rubber, ball, soft-nose, illuminating and smoke grenades. The 5 kg XRGL40 fires a 220 gram medium velocity projectile to a range of 800 metres, versus 375 metres for low velocity ammunition. Designed as a true multi-role weapon system, it comes with the GR40 smart multi-velocity sight, which allows the soldier to fire 40 mm ammunition with different ballistic profiles from the same weapon - both 40x46 mm low-velocity and 40x51 mm medium-velocity grenades and also the latest less-lethal rounds. Rippel Effect started marketing the six shot XRGL40 in 2011/12 and in the last two years has managed to sell the XRGL40 extended range 40mm MGL to eight different countries, the extended range 40mm MGL System is now operational in the Middle East, Latin America and Far East. The XRGL40 is also used in 40 x 51mm extended range ammunition development programs by RDM (South Africa), Diehl BGT Defence (Germany), Energetics Technologies Ltd (UK) and Indumil (Colombia).
