REASONS FOR CONTENTION BETWEEN SIBLINGS (cont.d) ... 7) Children may believe they are getting unequal attention, love and care from parents. Thus, they start to compete with each other and fight. The way parents resolve conflicts between siblings might influence children to fight more.9) Children fight more when they see that parents see aggression and competition as a normal way for kids to relate and resolve conflicts. 10). Children may want to show that they have what it takes to succeed or prove that they are better than their siblings. 11). Not spend enough time with kids to teach them moral values, proper etiquettes and help them understand certain things they desire to comprehend. 12) Children who are frustrated, stressed or depressed can find it hard to relate with people or tolerate unpleasant situations or failure and therefore take to fighting. REASONS FOR CONTENTION BETWEEN SIBLINGS 1) Hunger, fatigue and boredom can frustrate children, make them cranky and fight. 2) Stress and mood of the parents may serve as a reason to fight or blame each other. 3) Children may feel the love and attention they get from their parents is threatened by the arrival of a new baby in the home. 4) When children constantly see others fight around them, they start to emulate what they see. 5) Family differences is a major determinant. For example: when a child looks/remind the parent of some one they love, they consciously or unconsciously start to favour that child above others. 6) Shy or nervous kids may not know how to start playful activities with sibling, so they pick fights instead to get their attention. ...to be continued. ...Continuation on: MOST COMMON PARENTING PROBLEMS 5) Contention Between Siblings Sibling contention/rivalry revolves around the conflicts, competition, jealousy or fights that happens between kids that are brought up in the same family which can either be in the verbal or physical form. This kind of fights can happen between blood-related siblings, siblings from step parents or foster siblings. When brothers and sisters engage in constant fights, it can ruin the peace in the home and eventually grow into hatred between the siblings. The way parents treat their kids and react to conflicts can really make a big difference in how well siblings get along. Parents should know that aggression and fights between siblings is NOT NORMAL and definitely NOT AN ACCEPTABLE OR PLEASANT WAY to solve misunderstandings or issues between them. Parenting is a life-long task that takes wisdom and understanding to do and do right. Teaching your kids to work things out with their siblings gives your children a chance to develop important skills like team bonding, cooperation and being able to see from another person's perspectives. ....to be continued. ... Continuation of yesterday's post SOLUTION TO AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOURS IN KIDS 3) Be your child's model of love, forgiveness, kindness good manners. Show them how to let go of unpleasant thoughts by keeping their minds occupied with pleasant things. 4) Teach them to be calm. Teach your kids to breathe in and out before responding to annoying/unpleasant issues. 5) Encourage them to read positive books. If you're a Christian, provide them a BIBLE and study it with them. The word of God has a way of calming every storm in and around us. For example, David played the instrument and the evil spirit in Saul left him. 6) Learn and teach your kids to pray. In our mouth (tongue) lie the power of life and death. Decree life (wholesome words) into your kids at specific hours of the day I.e. Midnight, 5am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm. You can ask God to lead you to a praying and Bible believing church/fellowship that is good for you. 7) Talk with your child calmly to find out what it is that causes him/her stress and makes him react in this manner. Understand the pattern and help accordingly. If the situation has lasted for a long time already and has become dire, it is best to get him to an anger management counsellor for professional attention while you continue to place your hand on the child's head to pray what you want into him.Kindly like, give your comments on other tips you know that we're not mentioned. ... Continuation. 4) Aggression In kids, aggression can take the form of kicking, violence, anger, hitting , biting, destroying properties, Verbal attacks, irritability, bullying, making threats and so on. It's reported by Yale medicine study center that Environment, Genetics and other biological factors are thought to play a role in aggressive outburst on kids which is usually preceded by strong feeling of anger. Now, most parents will often wonder if this aggressive behaviors in their kids is normal or a spiritual issue. Parents often forget that as they struggle to cope with things like divorce, death of a loved one, separation, loneliness, et.c. their kids also have difficulties coping as well. Do you know that children too can get depressed? Generally speaking, aggression is considered to have a negative function that not only elicits disapproval from others, but also is evaluated as destructive and damaging in its consequences. However, Blustein (1996) argues that the term “aggressive” behavior is ambiguous, denoting both positive and negative behaviors. For example: Applying aggression to your business marketing strategies which is popularity referred to as Aggressive marketing. Solution 1) Spend time with your kids doing only what he/she loves. Give them attention. 2) Avoid exposing your kids to conflicts or any violent outburst in your environment. 3) Be your child's model of love, forgiveness, kindness good manners. Show them how to let go of unpleasant thoughts by keeping their minds occupied with pleasant things. 4) Teach them to be calm. 3) Refusal to Studies Kids love to play, watch cartoon, eat and continue playing while some love to sleep. So, as parents, we have to do a lot of talking, praying, teaching and probably engage in some comedy to gain their attention towards studying or doing their assignments. Sometimes, we have to be strict and go the route of discipline/punishment to make them study for an upcoming exam or help them remember and understand what they've been taught in school. It's only normal that children behave like this. That's part of what makes them children. It's now left to the adults around them to help them inculcate good morals and discipline which isn't always easy to do. Sometimes, for them to develop interest in studying, we have to lure them with some activities or things that they absolutely love. Ofcourse, changes won't be noticeable in a day or week but little by little, if you are consistent, they will start getting used to it as their normal routine and have it engrained in their subconscious.
