Amazon, Apple, and Facebook all reported blowout earnings on Thursday.
The companies' stock prices all soared following the reports, helping executives continue their winning streak.
But as a whole, the US economy is reeling from record job losses and shrinking GDP figures.
Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .
You'd never know there's a recession gripping the US economy by the looks of mega-cap tech stocks.

On Friday alone, some of the wealthiest executives added billions to their wealth, according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, after Facebook, Amazon, and Apple all blew past quarterly earnings expectations and largely shrugged off the widespread losses elsewhere in equity markets.

When the dust settled from Friday's trading session into Monday morning, Facebook had climbed 8.2% to a record high of $253.67, netting CEO Mark Zuckerberg $7 billion in the process. Amazon, meanwhile, closed up 3.7% at $3,164.68, increasing CEO Jeff Bezos' wealth by a similar $7 billion.

The moves come despite the men appearing alongside their Silicon Valley peers at a contentious antitrust hearing in the US House of Representatives on Wednesday. Apple also saw similar stock gains, but its chief executive didn't make Bloomberg's rankings.

Like many other C-suiters on Bloomberg's list, Apple CEO Tim Cook's riches are largely tied to stock ownership in Apple. That means his net worth is largely tied to day-to-day fluctuations in the stock market. Luckily for the cohort, tech stocks have surged since January 1 while equities generally have struggled to see any growth this year.

Such a winning streak has helped other billionaires, like Elon Musk, move up the list. While Cook hasn't yet officially made the list, his wealth also likely increased in-step with the stock prices, depending on how many stock options he's been awarded.

Billionaires or not, corporate executives have largely given up less as the virus eats into US economy, precipitating record unemployment and a massive decline in GDP. A survey by the firm CGLytics, as reported by The New York Times , found that 3,000 leaders of public companies took pay cuts in some form or another, but in many cases they amounted to a very small percentage of overall compensation.

And when Payroll Protection Funds begin to run dry this month, many businesses have said they'll soon have to cut even more staff.

"COVID-19 is far from beaten and while there is optimism about a vaccine, the timing and its efficacy are still unknown,ING chief economist James Knightley said in a Thursday note. "With virus fears on the rise, jobs being lost and incomes squeezed, we feel the recovery could be much bumpier than markets seemingly do, and think we are in for some data disappointment over the next couple of months."

Programming / Breaking News 》computer Mouse Co-creator Dies At 91 by Tim1212(m): 10:05pm On Aug 04, 2020
The co-creator of the computer mouse, William English, has died aged 91.

The engineer and inventor was born in 1929 in Kentucky and studied electrical engineering at university before joining the US Navy.

He built the first mouse in 1963, using an idea put forward by his colleague Doug Engelbart while the pair were working on early computing.

It would only become commonplace two decades later, when personal home computers became popular.

Mr English's death was confirmed to US media outlets by his wife.

A brown box
Bill English became the first person to use a mouse when he built the prototype at Mr Engelbart's research project at the Stanford Research Institute.

The idea was Mr Engelbart's, which he described as only being "brief notes" - but the creation was down to Bill English.
His first version was a wooden block with a single button - and underneath, two rolling wheels at 90-degree angles that would record vertical and sideways movement.

"We were working on text editing - the goal was a device that would be able to select characters and words," Mr English told the Computer History Museum in 1999.

In an experiment, the pair asked users to try out the mouse alongside other pointing devices such as a light pen or joystick - and found that the mouse was the clear favourite. They wrote a paper, which was largely ignored for years.

At their 1968 demonstration, the mouse was shown off publicly for the first time - along with video conferencing, word processing, and a form of links similar to what we use on the internet today.
"As it moves up or down or sideways, so does the tracking spot," Doug Engelbart explained to the audience, as Bill English directed the technical side of the conference - including the video that wowed spectators.

The landmark nature of the showcase led to it being called "the mother of all demos" by later writers.

Asked decades later if it was the seminal moment in modern computing, Mr English replied: "I wouldn't dispute that."

Cat and mouse
Some stories attribute it to its size and the cable's similarity to a tail - others to the fact that the cursor was, at the time, called a "cat", and seemed to chase the new device's movements.

But neither Mr English or Mr Engelbart could remember who decided the device should be called a "mouse" - or exactly why.

"In the first report, we had to call it something. 'A brown box with buttons' didn't work," Mr English said.

"It had to be a short name. It's a very obvious short name."

Mr English was also largely credited with creating the graphical desktop user interface system used by almost all modern computers.

He left the Stanford Research Institute in 1971, moving to Xerox's famous Parc research centre.

There, he replaced the wheels on his first mouse design with a rolling ball - the design that became familiar to most end users over the next decades. A similar design had already been tested by German firm Telefunken.

Mr English died of respiratory failure on 26 July in California, his wife Roberta said. Mr Engelbart died in 2013 aged 88.

Neither man was made wealthy by their invention, which was patented but owned by their employer - and the intellectual property rights expired in 1987, before the mouse became one of the most common tech devices on the planet.

Speaking to the BBC after Mr Engelbart's death, Mr English said: "The only money Doug ever got from it was $50,000 licence from Xerox when Xerox Parc started using the mouse."

The device was also adopted by Apple for its early personal computer, the Lisa.

But "Apple never paid any money from it, and it took off from there," he said.

This is what Nigeria government should do to Facebook,Whatsapp, and Instagram.

These platforms do not pay tax to the federal government, but they make billions from Nigeria monthly while creating jobs in their host countries.

Those social media apps should be banned in other to boost indigenous social media platforms developed by Nigerians with “Nairaland” as a clear example of how creative Nigerians are and how we can create huge employment opportunities for Nigerians.

Do you know how much these platforms make from companies to show their products to Nigerians??

Imagine if those company were to pay those huge sums to Nigeria social media platforms? It will not only boost our economy and create jobs it will also secure our informations.

I totally agree with you, the Feds need to ban these companies to boost indigenous companies. But the fact is we don't have one.

Programming / Trump Says He Will Ban Tiktok, Microsoft Set To Buy It. by Tim1212(m): 9:44am On Aug 01, 2020
President Donald Trump has announced he is banning the Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok in the US.

He told reporters he could sign an executive order as early as Saturday.

US security officials have expressed concern that the app, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, could be used to collect the personal data of Americans.

TikTok has denied accusations that it is controlled by or shares data with the Chinese government.

The fast-growing app has up to 80 million active monthly users in America and the ban would be a major blow for ByteDance.

"As far as TikTok is concerned, we're banning them from the United States," Mr Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

It was not immediately clear what authority Mr Trump has to ban TikTok, how that ban would be enforced and what legal challenges it would face.

Microsoft has reportedly been in talks to buy the app from ByteDance, but Mr Trump appeared to cast doubt that such a deal would be allowed to go through. If the deal went ahead reports say it would involve ByteDance shedding TikTok's US operations.

A TikTok spokesperson declined to comment on Mr Trump's mooted ban, but told US media outlets the company was "confident in the long-term success of TikTok" in the US.

The move to ban TikTok comes at a time of heightened tensions between the Trump administration and the Chinese government over a number of issues, including trade disputes and Beijing's handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

What is TikTok?
The platform has exploded in popularity in recent years, mostly with people under 20.

They use the app to share 15-second videos that often involve lip-synching to songs, comedy routines and unusual editing tricks.

These videos are then made available to both followers and strangers. By default, all accounts are public, although users can restrict uploads to an approved list of contacts.

TikTok also allows private messages to be sent but this facility is limited to "friends".

The app is reported to have around 800 million active monthly users, most of whom are in the US and India.

India has already blocked TikTok as well as other Chinese apps. Australia, which has already banned Huawei and telecom equipment-maker ZTE, is also considering banning TikTok.

Why is the US concerned about TikTok?
US officials and politicians have raised concerns data collected by ByteDance via TikTok may end up being passed to the Chinese government.

TikTok operates a similar but separate version of the app in China, known as Douyin. It says all US user data is stored in the US, with a backup in Singapore.
This week, TikTok told users and regulators it would observe a high level of transparency, including allowing reviews of its algorithms.

"We are not political, we do not accept political advertising and have no agenda - our only objective is to remain a vibrant, dynamic platform for everyone to enjoy," the CEO of TikTok, Kevin Mayer, said in a post this week .

"TikTok has become the latest target, but we are not the enemy."

Career / 7 Reasons Why Degree Holders Are Poor? by Tim1212(m): 8:34am On Jul 28, 2020
*7 REASONS WHY DEGREE HOLDERS ARE POOR?*

BASICALLY, there seven reasons why degree holders are poor.

*1. THEY DON’T THINK BEYOND THEIR CERTIFICATES*

Albert Einstein said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” Have you ever heard creativity term “Think outside the box”? One of the major reasons why most graduates are poor is simply because they can’t see and think beyond their certificates.
I have seen engineering students work as bankers. I have seen medical doctors with great skills in web and graphic designs. I have seen lawyers that are very dexterous with finances. The list is endless!

The basic truth of life is that the skills that are needed to be much sought after and become more successful in life are not really found within the walls of the classrooms. Your certificate is just a proof that you are teachable, it does not suggest what you are totally capable of doing. You are full of possibilities when you think beyond your degrees and certificates.

*2. THEY PRIORITIZE THEIR CERTIFICATES MORE THAN THEIR GIFTS AND TALENTS*

I have often advised some of my colleagues, never to leave their gifts dormant while pursuing and hunting for jobs with their certificates. There must be a complementary balance in the pursuit of your passion and in the search for jobs.

Everybody is gifted for something, but the winning edge comes from our ability to work on our gifts and bless the world with it. The very best way to develop yourself is in the direction of your natural talents and interest. In order to live a fulfilled and impactful life, we need to work harder on our gift than our job. We need to discover our gift, develop it, and sell it. Don’t bury your TALENT with your certificates.

*3. THEIR CERTIFICATES PREPARE THEM FOR A WORLD THAT NO LONGER EXIST*

It has been found that most of the skills taught in schools are becoming obsolete in the present world. The world has changed a lot, and so are people’s need! It is imperative to know that the present form of university education does not prepare students for the future.

Graduates are becoming endangered species in the face of a changing world. Our archaic methods and approaches of learning are preparing graduates for a world that no longer exist, as we are churning out degree holders every year with certificates that have face value but no intrinsic worth. Most learning institutions are filled up with lecturers and pseudo-educators with lecture notes, methods and approaches that have lost relevance in a changing world.

*4. THEY KNOW LESS ABOUT THEMSELVES BUT MORE ABOUT THINGS*

Certificates and degrees don’t reveal people to themselves; they at most measure our IQ (Intelligent Quotient). I have often tell people that there is no Recovery without Discovery. A poor man is simply someone that has not discovered himself.

The more you discover yourself, the more you realize the treasures that are hidden deep within you. We carry inside ourselves latent treasures that can only be unveiled through self-discovery.

*5. CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES CAN KILL INITIATIVES*

Degrees and certificates can close up your minds to ideas while initiatives open it up. If you are not careful, your degrees and certificates can close up your mind. The purpose of education is to keep your mind perpetually opened towards limitless possibilities!

Fred Smith saw an opportunity for overnight delivery of anything anywhere in the USA, and ultra- fast delivery anywhere in the world, FedEx was born. It will be interesting to know that Fred Smith got a grade “C” in a Yale economics class for an idea that the professor belittled as unworkable.
Fred Smith’s company became the first American business to make over ten billion dollars in annual profit. Beginning with just 186 packages delivered the first night, FedEx now delivers in over two hundred countries using over 6,030 aircraft, 46,000 vehicles and 141,000 employees.

*6. DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES POSITION YOU TO LOOK FOR JOBS AND NOT FOR OPPORTUNITIES*

Our certificates and degrees prepare graduates to look for jobs and not open our eyes to life-changing opportunities. You are not poor because you don’t have a job; you are poor because you are not seeing and seizing opportunities.

Being POOR is simply Passing Over Opportunities Repeatedly! What keeps people ahead in life is not their education or degrees, it is simply the opportunity that they seized. Jobs may be scarce but not opportunities.

As long as there is a problem to be solved, there will always be opportunities. It is a waste of our education, exposure, and experiences if after we graduate from school, all we think about is searching for a job. An enlightened and educated mind should be able to see and seize opportunities.

*7. CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES PREPARE PEOPLE TO LOOK FOR SECURITY AND NOT TO TAKE RISKS*

We must be willing to make mistakes and take breakthrough risks. Taking risks and learning from mistakes help us in knowing what works and what does not! When Thomas Edison was being questioned by a mischievous journalist on how he felt for having failed for 999 times before getting the idea of the light bulb, his response stunned the whole world when he confidently said, “I have not failed 999 times, I have only learned 999 ways of how not to make a light bulb”.

Many graduates and degree holders are becoming progressively poor because the skills required in the modern world to get rich are not taught in schools and institutions.

By 2025, we’ll lose over five million jobs to automation. This means that future jobs will look vastly different by the time many people graduate from the university.

*Future jobs will involve KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION/CREATION* and innovation, and people that are only equipped with skills found in the classroom will definitely be a misfit in an ever-changing world. Skills like critical thinking, creativity, people’s skill, STEM skills (e.g Coding), complex problem-solving skills etc. are central to living a more comprehensive and productive life.

*8 THEREFORE,* in conclusion, My humble and candid advice to graduates and students in institutions is to think wide, deep and outside the box. Take volunteer jobs, and don’t be afraid to navigate fields that are different from your field of learning. Your future career will require you to pull information from many different fields to come up with creative solutions to future problems.
Start by reading as much as you can about anything and everything that interests you. Once you get to college, consider double majoring or minoring in completely different fields. Trust me, it’ll pay off in the long run.

Don’t limit yourself to the classroom. Do something practical. Take a leadership position. Start a business and fail; that’s a better entrepreneurship. Contest an election and lose. It will teach you something political science will not teach you. Attend a seminar. Read books outside the scope of your course.

Think less of becoming an excellent student, but think more of becoming an excellent person. Don’t make the classroom your world, but make the world your classroom. Step forward and try something extra.

Invest in something you believe! Real financial security and freedom is not in your job, but in your passion, gifts, talents, and your ability to see and seize opportunities.

Real financial security and freedom is not in your job, but in your passion, gifts, talents, and your ability to see and seize opportunities.

one of the difference is the fact that programming languages constitute the logic of a computer program(html being a language the computer understand but cannot be used to write the logic of a program).

Who actually taught you that, one of the factòr of programming is sequence of instruction given to a computer to perform a task whether it has conditional structure or marking up content

This is so not true bro. I can't believe you created an OS for a smartphone on top. It takes years to do that number one and you must learn assembly. Maybe you are talking of something else.

I have designed most software app for desktop and mobile with just HTML5/CSS3.
OS is not hard when you have deep knowledge of HTML5/CSS3, Javascript C++

"Java, Javascript, C++, python etc are the programing languages. If anyone wishes to be called a programmer, let him try any of these. And not forcing programming language on HTML" . That is the position of many people.

But in actual sense, HTML and CSS can be called a programming language, though not computational ones.

I agree with you HTML5/CSS3 can be called programming language, but not computational though.

Alright, show me your work with the programming language you have learnt.
