HIV cure close after disease 'vanishes' from blood of British man The 44-year-old man could become the first person to be cured of HIV using a new therapy A British man could become the first person in the world to be cured of HIV using a new therapy designed by a team of scientists from five UK universities. The 44-year-old is one of 50 people currently trialling a treatment which targets the disease even in its dormant state. Scientists told The Sunday Times that presently the virus is completely undetectable in the man’s blood, although that could be a result of regular drugs. However if the dormant cells are also cleared out it could represent the first complete cure. Trial results are expected to be published in 2018. "This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV,” said Mark Samuels, managing director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure. “We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV. This is a huge challenge and it's still early days but the progress has been remarkable." HIV virus in the bloodstream The trial is being undertaken by researchers from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London and King's College London. HIV is so difficult to treat because it targets the immune system, splicing itself into the DNA of T-cells so that they not only ignore the disease, but turn into viral factories which reproduce the virus. Current treatments, called anti-retroviral therapies (Art), target that process but they cannot spot dormant infected T-cells. The new therapy works in two stages. Firstly, a vaccine helps the body recognise the HIV-infected cells so it can clear them out. Secondly, a new drug called Vorinostat activates the dormant T-cells so they can be spotted by the immune system. More than 100,000 people in Britain are living with HIV, around 17 per cent of whom do not know they have the disease, and 37 million are infected worldwide. The first unidentified patient, a social care worker in London, said: "It would be great if a cure has happened. My last blood test was a couple of weeks ago and there is no detectable virus. "I took part in the trial to help others as well as myself. It would be a massive achievement if, after all these years, something is found to cure people of this disease. The fact that I was a part of that would be incredible." Professor Sarah Fidler, a consultant physician at Imperial College London, added: "This therapy is specifically designed to clear the body of all HIV viruses, including dormant ones. "It has worked in the laboratory and there is good evidence it will work in humans too, but we must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy. "We will continue with medical tests for the next five years and at the moment we are not recommending stopping Art but in the future depending on the test results we may explore this." Only one person has ever been cured of HIV. He is Timothy Brown, also known as The ‘second’ Berlin Patient, who received a stem cell transplant from a patient with natural immunity to HIV in 2008. Sir Elton John urges world to continue fight to beat HIVPlay!01:07 Ian Green, chief executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust, the Aids charity, said: "There is still no cure for HIV and we welcome this ambitious study which looks to eradicate the virus completely from the bodies of people living with HIV, instead of suppressing it." Philip Christopher Baldwin, an HIV awareness activist. "I'm really excited by the recent developments regarding a potential cure for the HIV virus. "The first person to complete an experimental course of treatment has cleared the virus. I was diagnosed with HIV in 2010, when I was 24 years old. It took me a number of years to come to terms with my HIV. "I am proud that five British universities have been responsible for this pioneering research. It remains to be seen whether the virus will return in the "cured" patient, or if the other people taking part in the medical trial will respond in a similar way. "The research, though, is great progress and I hope that these early results will be repeated throughout the trial group. This is an important step towards a world free of the fear of HIV." WORLD PHARMACY DAY 2016 - CARING FOR YOU World over, it's another year to commemorate and celebrate the relentless service of pharmacists in the health care sector, this year is themed "caring for you". Alot of people out there confuse or misinterprete their services especially in developing nations like Africa and Nigeria is not an exception to this. Many miscontrue the services of a pharmacist as luxury. Would you really blame these set of people? The answer is a resounding NO. There is little/insignificant level of awareness to the general public about the distinct roles and functions of a pharmacist. WHO IS A PHARMACIST? According to Wikipedia; pharmacists, also known as chemists, druggists, are health care professionals who practice in pharmacy, the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication. He is adequately knowledgeable about biochemical mechanisms and actions of drugs - usage, therapeutic roles, side effects and potential drug interactions. Recent studies has revealed that over 50% of Nigerians engage in self medication, it is therefore imperative to summarize the distinct roles of a pharmacist. Pharmacists perform vital roles in the health care system through the medicine and information they provide. Some of these roles/functions include: 1. Provides expertise on drug composition (physical, biological and chemical properties). 2. The manufacture and usage of drugs. 3. Achieve positive outcomes from the use of medications to improve a patient's quality of life with minimum risk. 4. Pharmacists cure diseases. 5. Eliminate/reduce symptoms. 6. Arrest or slow down a disease process. 7. Prevent disease, diagnose disease. 8. Alter physiological process for desirable result in the patients health. worry359:Appreciate you alot bro. But we're not in Canada, we ain't citizens let alone plan to claim citizenship. How do we proceed from Nigeria to help her work in on Canada as a nurse |
Hello friends, I know alot has been posted about immigration into Canada. But too many conflicting info has made it difficult to get concise and precise info. My sister is a registered nurse (RN) and also qualifies ss a psychiatric nurse from ARO, Abeokuta. And she intends to work in Canada/US. Please your info/advice/experience about the important procedure/process/application/documentation etc would be appreciated. She's done IELTS. THANKS. |
I'm not here to scold you or act self righteously but I'm gonna reveal certain truths to you. Firstly, you need to acknowledge the fact that you've made a terrible mistake by engaging in premarital sex. Go on your knees and sincerely ask God for forgiveness. Only GOD can help you bear the burden cos tough days lay ahead trust me. Secondly, you can't handle this on your own, it will sink you. You need to confide in your mom. Forget the pain, shame and disappointment you'll feel. Mothers have this charm and experience in dealing with such issues smoothly and efficiently (because they love to see their grandchildren). Thirdly, there'll be alot of pressures, opinions and advices because it's most likely and expedient your mom decides you both are going to notify the guy's parent (it is the right, Normal and best thing to do ), so make up your mind and allow God's ultimate will to be done. Fourthly, seek the will of God. I don't know the extent of your relationship with God, but Luke 14:14 says anything we ask in his name, he will do. Ask God for his plan, purpose and will for you in this situation. It's pretty a hard choice and you need divine guidance and counselling. You need not compound your mistake with making further mistakes. You don't have to marry the guy but he must take full responsibility for your antenatal care and the baby's upkeep to at least 3 years. Last but not the least, a child is a beautiful thing from the Lord no matter the context or disguise with which he/she is coming into the world. You're just an instrument for the child to come and manifest his own purpose and destiny in life, so therefore abortion should not be an alternative for you. If you commit abortion, you're as cruel as a hired assassin and you'll be : . . . . You'll be committing murder . . . . You could lose your womb in the process . . . . Abortion will hunt you for life . . . Do you know how many children you've been destined to have? Btw what if this child is the most glorious? (omo ologo) . . . . It takes so long to be psychologically and mental stable . . . . You stand the risk of contacting pelvic inflammatory diseases, STI and so on If you need further counseling, you could reach me via WhatsApp 07037986229 or email : Okeflex360@yahoo.com staylifted and I pray for the grace of God to help you stay strong and do what is right. |

The eye has been said to be the window to the body. The fear of being blind is bewildering let alone being blind. Nobody can feel the pains the visually impaired are passing through. Make hay while the sun shines and do everything you can to protect your eyes. Sunglasses or sunshades as you know are relatively cheap compared to their enormous benefits, there are many benefits to wearing them, especially since they protect our eyes from damaging radiation and ultra violet rays of the sun. We may not notice, however, that there are many other benefits to wearing shades outside. BENEFITS OF WEARING SUNSHADES 1. Sunglasses Decrease Dry-Eye Problems – Many people suffer from dry-eye syndrome mostly because of environmental factors. Windy environments, especially those that occur in dry climates, can easily dry out both the skin and the eyes, causing dry-eye syndrome. Sunglasses help protect against dry-eye syndrome by blocking the wind and dust that could gain access to your eyes. This can help prevent you from experiencing the symptoms of dry-eye syndrome, especially if said sunglasses are of a wrap-around style. BEAUTY TIPS OF THE DAY? Skin Care Tip---If you have dry skin, use an oil-based skin moisturizer. Skin Care Tip---If you have oily skin, use a water-based skin moisturizer. Skin Care Tip---Get rid of blemishes and pimples by washing your face with an oil-free and fragrance-free cleanser that is labeled pH balanced. 2. Glare is Reduced with Sunglasses – Sunglasses are awesome when it comes to reducing the sun’s garish glare. Why is that important? It allows for proper vision when you’re taking part in a high-risk task such as driving. If you wear sunglasses when you drive instead of squinting through the sunlight, you will cut down a huge amount of risks to your life and the lives of others. Keep in mind that more than a thousand people die each year due to drivers who couldn’t see because of glare. 3. You’ll Experience Less Squinting and Eye Strain – Do you find yourself constantly squinting and straining to see? Did you know that squinting is not only detrimental to your eyesight but that it can also lead to wrinkles around your eyes earlier in life? When you wear sunglasses, you will decrease the amount of squinting you will do, which will allow you to see more clearly and will help your eyes to feel less tired. A whiter teeth is the admiration of many over the years. Many have gone the extra mile just to make their teeth look more attractive. Permit me to say that a white teeth would confidently lead to a brighter smile. Of course, there are the usual whitening methods: toothpaste, mouthwash, gums, and expensive professional treatments. There are also easy, everyday habits that can help brighten your smile. Here are 7 simple ways to make your teeth their whitest—and the habits you should break, too. DO: 1. Swap out your toothbrush A whiter smile could be as easy as throwing out your old toothbrush. “Replace a toothbrush every three months, or as soon as you see the majority of the bristles begin to bend and look worn down.” After the bristles are worn down, your toothbrush isn’t cleaning your teeth properly. 2. Brush your tongue Brushing your tongue isn’t only about having fresh breath. This can also help prevent staining. Your tongue accumulates bacteria, which can eventually lead to discoloration. Use a soft toothbrush and long strokes starting at the very back of the tongue, rinsing your brush after each stroke. This will help remove the bacteria on the brush without re-depositing it on your tongue. 3. Rinse with apple cider vinegar While it isn’t as effective as other, more mainstream whitening treatments, it is a natural and organic way to maintain a healthy smile. It is recommended, rinsing with two parts water to one part apple cider vinegar, and swishing the solution around for one minute. 4. Eat raw fruits and vegetables Eating fruits, vegetables, and other crunchy foods is good for your body and your teeth. Eating nuts, raw carrots, apples, and cauliflower can help keep your teeth clean by removing surface stains and plaque that leads to cavities. 5. Rinse with water after eating oranges Although they’re a good go-to for vitamin C, citrus fruits, such as lemons and limes, contain acid that erodes tooth enamel. This can make teeth stain more easily. The fix? Make sure to rinse your mouth out with water immediately after eating these fruits to wash the destructive acid off your teeth.... http://healthertainment..com.ng/2015/09/beautiful-tuesday-tips-for-maintaining.html |
What Is That Female Discharge? Do you ever feel a bit of dampness in your underwear and think it's your period, only to find a white or yellowish spot on your underwear? This is vaginal discharge and it's totally normal. You see, your body produces this female discharge to cleanse and moisten your vagina. And it's a good thing it does, because if the vaginal lining stayed dry, you would be susceptible to vaginal infections! Female Discharge—Normal Female Discharge Normal discharge is clear, smooth, or creamy and has a very slight smell that can be described as sweet or soapy. Sometimes if it gets in your underwear and gets exposed to air it may turn a little crusty, but this is normal too. The only thing you should look out for is discharge that is itchy, irritating, discolored, or smelly, because this might be a sign of infection and a reason to see your doctor. Female Discharge—When Female Discharge Happens You'll probably produce more discharge in the middle of your menstrual cycle a couple weeks after your period. This is when you're ovulating (your ovary is releasing an egg). If you're sexually active, you'll probably notice that when you're excited your body produces more discharge. This is your body's way of lubricating your vagina for intercourse. Apparently, its not a big issue when you see this discharge. Have a blessed day. http://healthertainment..jp/2015/02/female-discharge.html Oke Oluwatimilehin Email: Okeflex360@yahoo.com Whatsapp: +234-8142-798-776 BB PIN: 7F4B734D BB CHANNEL: C001C7A18 Twitter: @timi0301 Instagram: @timi0301 |
Sometimes I wonder how money has manipulated Dr. Reuben Abati... femi fani kayode has been corrupt since his early days. Jonathan keeps getting wrongest advices ever. As former President Olusegun Obasanjo rightly put, GEJ is reigning and not ruling cos he doesn't even have full and autonomous control of the service chiefs. Little wonder the coordinating minister's stance and speech on economic policies are significantly different from that of Mr. gej. Corruption has been glorified, celebrated and magnified under this democratic dispensation. Ain't y'all ready for change in Nigeria? I think change is imminent. |

Deep sighs! I lost my sleep and tranquility at the wee hours of the day, as I sat up straight on the edge of my bed meditating on the affairs of today. Then suddenly, I was alerted by the ding sound on my iPad, it was an email from one of my feeds alerting me about today's event. I wouldn't delve into the nitty gritty of the cancer epidemic but rather, I want to use this medium to empathize with those who are affected by cancer. World Cancer Day is marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, early detection, and treatment. I call you survivors! I've had my own fair share of some of the pains you go through; nonetheless I can only imagine the magnanimity of your perils as a fighter and survivor. The sting of cancer is eating deep into our society due to numerous technological advancements in dietary intakes and all. I am not here this day to tell you what you already know, neither am I here to dictate how to live your lives or condemn you from the unhealthy lifestyles you lived. I am here to give you a word of hope, encourage you to keep on fighting hard as long as you can. I know sometimes you feel the world is not a beautiful place to live, you sometimes have feelings of doom and emptiness, at other times; you might feel like giving up and see no other justifiable reason to live. Dear Fighter and Survivor, life might still be beautiful when you see the rising sun and the dawning of each new day. Never give up! Today is your day, to celebrate and remind you about cancer awareness. Before I go, I would like to say this; I've lost close relatives and friends fighting this cancer battle and I still have people with whom we fight their battles together through my presence, words of encouragement, financial and moral support and most importantly; my spiritual support. I remember you today and I can only pray to God that a miracle should happen in your lives. Subsequently, my word of appeal goes out to those of you who do not even know your health status, I will never stop saying it, health is wealth! Get tested today! Cancer can be detected by certain signs and symptoms or by screening tests. It is typically further investigated by medical imaging and confirmed by biopsy. Early detection through screening is useful for cervical and colorectal cancer. Although a preventable disease, cancer is indeed a human frightening and deadly medical condition that can occur in any essential organ in the body including stomach, lung, breast, kidney, liver, heart, eye, nose, skin, cervical, bone, brain, just to mention a few. Many cancerous growths can be prevented by not indulging in smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, being vaccinated against certain infectious diseases, not eating too much red meat, coupled with avoidance of regular exposure to sunlight and urban air pollution. Cancer is usually treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, targeted therapy or sometimes, a combination of all. In a typical cancer treatment, pain and symptom management are an important and basic part of care. Palliative care is particularly recommended for patients suffering from advanced cancer condition. Finally, the most prevalent and common cancers are; Lung and Prostrate Cancer in males, Breast and Cervical Cancer in females. Ladies should ensure to check their breasts every morning, check for abnormal changes in colour, size, lumps etc and report to a doctor immediately you observe anything strange. The chance of surviving a cancer is greater if it’s detected early enough. Men should also check for pains in their lower abdominal regions and go for regular medical checkups. As a blogger, I'm often faced with the challenge of what to write and when to write. At other times, the urgency of an event would prompt the writer. The outbreak of bird flu in over 10 states in Nigeria has made it urgent, imminent and important to discuss the disease with my esteemed readers. Bird flu, also called avian influenza, is a viral respiratory disease mainly of poultry and certain other bird species, including migratory waterbirds, some imported pet birds, and ostriches, that can be transmitted directly to humans. The first known cases in humans were reported in 1997, when an outbreak in poultry in Hong Kong led to severe illness in 18 people, one-third of whom died. Between 2003 and late 2005, outbreaks of the most deadly variety of bird flu (subtype H5N1) occurred among poultry in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. Hundreds of millions of birds in those countries died from the disease or were killed in attempts to control the epidemics. Similar culling events have taken place since then, including culls in countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. HOW THE VIRUS SPREADS. Up to half of the people who get this virus die from the illness. Your risk of getting the bird flu virus is higher if: You work with poultry (such as farmers), You travel to places where the virus is present, You touch an infected bird, You eat raw or undercooked poultry meat, eggs, or blood from infected birds, Health care workers and people who live in the same house as people with bird flu may also be at higher risk of infection. The avian flu virus (H5N1) lives in the environment for long periods of time. Infection may be spread just by touching surfaces that have the virus on them. Birds who were infected with this flu can give off the virus in their feces and saliva for as long as 10 days. WATCH OUT FOR THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS The symptoms of avian flu infection in humans depend on the strain of virus. The H5N1 virus in humans causes typical flu-like symptoms such as: Cough Diarrhea Trouble breathing Fever greater than 100.4°F (38°C) Headache General ill feeling (malaise) Muscle aches Runny nose Sore throat Acute respiratory failure Organ failure Pneumonia Sepsis If you think you have been exposed to the virus, call your health care provider before your visit. This will give the staff a chance to take steps to protect themselves and other patients during your visit. There are tests for the avian flu but they are not widely available. Your doctor might do the following tests: Auscultation (to detect abnormal breath sounds), Chest x-ray, Nasopharyngeal virus detection by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Nasopharyngeal culture, throat virus detection by RT-PCR, White blood cell differential. Other tests may be done to look at how well your heart, kidneys, and liver are working. TREATMENT OF BIRD FLU The treatment administered varies based on your symptoms. In general, treatment with the antiviral medication oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) may make the disease less severe. You need to start taking the medicine within 48 hours after your symptoms start for it to work effectively. Oseltamivir may also be prescribed for persons who live in the same house people with avian flu. This may prevent them from getting the illness. The virus that causes human avian flu is resistant to the antiviral medicines amantadine and rimantadine. These medicines should not be used in the case of an H5N1 outbreak. People with severe infection may need to be placed on a breathing machine. People infected with the virus also should be kept separate from non-infected people. www.healthertainment..com N.B Please be informed that the spread of avian influenza is essentially through contact between the birds and people that attend to them. Immediately the meat is cooked, the infection dies. Please endeavor to cook your poultry meat and product very well before serving. Whether you're on Android, iOS or Windows Phone you'll see the same thing in the upper right of the screen - a few bars representing your cell signal strength and a mysterious letter. Sometimes it says E, sometimes it says 3G, sometimes it says H. But it's not just alphabet soup - each term indicates what kind of data network you're connected to, and these different networks will provide very different internet connection speeds. In this article, I'll share with you what I know about each of the networks currently operating in the UK - what they're called, how fast they are and what you can do on them. Let's get started! LTE - Long Term Evolution (4G*) LTE provides the fastest data network connection at the present time, in theory offering speeds of up to 100 Mb/s. LTE is faster than many home broadband connections, and as such allows for rapid downloads, streaming of Full HD videos or music, and very rapid page loads. giffgaff is currently preparing to upgrade its network to LTE, but for now you won't be seeing this icon on your phone. *LTE is confusingly often associated with the term 4G. In reality, the 4G standard is one that hasn't quite been reached yet - that would require speeds of 1 Gb/s, about ten times faster than current LTE networks. The proliferation of the term is unfortunate, but until true 4G networks are available then you can just take the two terms to be synonymous in practice. H+ - HSDPA Plus HSDPA Plus is the fastest data network currently supported by giffgaff, at around 21 Mb/s. In many versions of Android "H+" is shown, but on Android 4.4 it is just displayed as "H". H+ allows you to easily stream HD videos and is comparable to the average home broadband connection. H - HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) HSDPA is a slightly slower version of HSDPA+, offering data speeds of around 7.2 Mb/s. This is about the minimum speed for reliably streaming video content at HD resolution, and still offers pretty good web surfing and music streaming. 3G - 3rd Generation (aka UMTS) 3G data networks were the first to support video calling, with download speeds of up to 2 Mb/s (although initially speeds of only 384 Kb/s were supported). It was at this stage that mobile internet got decent, and we saw an explosion of new capabilities for mobile phones in the early 2000s (like email, vis a vis BlackBerry). E - EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) EDGE can be thought of as 2.75G, offering speeds of up to 384 kb/s. EDGE was developed as a cheap way for carriers to upgrade their 2G networks to nearly 3G speeds, without needing to build all-new infrastructure. EDGE is relatively uncommon in the UK, but you do get it from time to time and it's generally enough to look something up if you have the patience. Interestingly, this means that EDGE came after 3G even though it's a slower standard. G - GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) GPRS is a little faster than the earlier GSM standard which first popularised data connections. For that reason, GPRS is called 2.5G - an improvement on 2G, but not quite big enough to require a new number. Data speeds are around 115 kb/s, which is enough to load a simple webpage or maybe your train timetable (if you have a consistent connection and some patience). This was the first "always-on" data service, and the oldest one that you'll connect to using an Android, iOS or Windows Phone. While older networks exist, you aren't likely to come across them these days and it's best left for the historically minded. That chart really puts into perspective how rapidly mobile internet speeds have improved in the last decade or so - we've seen about a 1000x increase in internet speeds. With LTE- Advanced and other 'true' 4G networks on the horizon, capable of streaming 4K video and probably some stuff we're not even aware of, we're not due to slow down any time soon! Signing off I hope you found this article useful. source: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Blog/G-H- E-3G-and-LTE-Making-sense-of-cell-network- alphabet-soup/ba-p/10735263 |
