Something new and awesome just popped up. We've seen in sci-fi movies of transparent devices. Well the possibility is only gaining edge daily.

Researchers at the University of Maryland have been working on a new treatment that gives a regular piece of wood some rather interesting new properties including transparency, improved insulation and more.


The scientists began by boiling the wood in water, sodium hydroxide and a number of other chemicals for two hours. This process removes lignin, the molecule responsible for giving wood its classic color.
The team then poured epoxy, a type of resin, which makes the wood four to fives times stronger.


To allow light to pass through the wood more directly, they incorporated poly(methyl methacrylate), also known as acrylic or Plexiglas . They could see through the resulting material, which was twice as strong as Plexiglas.

“Although the wood isn’t as
crystal clear as glass, its haziness provides a possible advantage for solar cells,” the scientists said.
“Specifically, because the material still traps some light, it could be used to boost the efficiency of these cells.”

“Among the work to be done next is enhancing the transparency of the material and scaling up the manufacturing process,” Dr. Berglund said.
“We also intend to work further with different types of wood.”

Another interesting aspect of the transformation is the way the wood still retains its original grooves.
The end result is something that's not only stronger than glass but a much more effective insulator, too.

Afeni Shakur Davis, mother of the late great Tupac Shakur, died on Monday night (May 3). Officials report that Marin County deputies responded to a call at her home in Sausalito, Calif., after she suffered an apparent heart attack. She was taken to a nearby hospital at 9:30 p.m. and pronounced dead at approximately 10:30 p.m.. She was 69 years old.

Shakur Davis was a noted member of the Black Panther Party, a commitment that led to her name change from Alice Faye Williams. Following her son’s death in 1996, Shakur Davis championed his legacy, founding the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation and spearheading several posthumous project in honor of him. The rapper famously dedicated a song to his mother with his 1995 classic, “Dear Mama:”

“There's no way I can pay you back/But the plan is to show you that I understand/You are appreciated,” he vowed.

Tupac is set to be memorialized in an upcoming biopic directed by Benny Boom. Actress Danai Gurira was reportedly scheduled to play Afeni in the film. The Marin County Sheriff's Coroners Office is conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of Shakur Davis’ death.
