PoliticsCorrect Us If We are Wrong About January 15 1966 Coup. by Tissaia(op): 2:12pm On Sep 18, 2021
January 15 1966 coup: Why we called it an Igbo coup —

Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and Emmanuel Ifeajuna (Igbos) killed 22 people including the Prime Minister of Nigeria
ON the coup: On January 15, 1966, majority Igbo army officers struck and turned the weapons which we issued to them to defend the country, on the government and the leaders that issued the weapons to them. In the process, they killed the Prime minister of the country; Tafawa balewa (Fulani) they killed the premier of the West; (Yoruba) they killed the premier of the North. (Fulani)

They also killed Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh (Itsekiri) the Federal Minister of Finance. They also killed some members of their own group. For example, Brigadier Maimalari was innocently killed. Because he is (Kanuri). Since then, Nigeria has never been the same and Nigeria has never attained anything near the dreams of the founding fathers and nationalists and fought for independence of the nation.

Many people had the impression that the coup was tribal in nature in our view it was.

Because Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, (Igbo) was abroad on medical trip. They handed the government over to General Aguiyi Ironsi (Igbo)

Well, the Army took over and they continued to blunder. They continued to do what they were trained to do; that is to destroy; to kill and to loot. Then the quarrel between two Lieutenant Colonels – Ojukwu (Igbo) and Yakubu Gowon (Angas) – eventually led the country to a civil war. Ojukwu said he was senior to Gowon and that Gowon cannot be the head of state when he (Ojukwu) was a governor.

Killing of Igbo soldiers

Gowon said if you want to be head of state, come to Lagos so that soldiers could take order from you. The argument continued until it led to the killing of Igbos in the north and killing of Igbo soldiers all over the country, with one of them buried alive in Ibadan. The young man had insisted on not doing what they wanted and they threatened to kill him. He said he was prepared to die; after all it was only one bullet that could kill him. So they told him they were not going to waste a bullet on him and buried him alive after forcing him to dig his grave. He was a major in the Army. A lot of atrocities were committed then.

What do you could be the reason for the coup?

We wouldn’t say we knew the intention of the boys who took over government because Ademulegun and other Yoruba officers never admitted that it was an Igbo coup. It only happened that there were more Igbo officers involved in the coup because there were so many Igbo officers in the army at that time, bullshits!

Shaolin0147:
Yorubas never cease to amaze me with their propaganda and exaggeration, how was the coup an Igbo coup? Simply because no Igbo was killed?
I want to ask you a question, let's have a logical argument.
Did other tribe participated in the plotting and execution of the first coup?

Did kaduna nzeogwu ordered them to execute other tribe leaders and spare Igbo leaders? If he did, since 1966, how come we never hear or see any facts that such order was made, even though some of the coup plotters are still alive

It's obviously a coincidence and not what Yoruba media have been trying to paint it
And where did you get the fact that they we're trying to dominate other tribes, otherwise it's just illusion and imagination
Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and Emmanuel Ifeajuna (both igbos) killed 22 people including the Prime Minister of Nigeria, many senior politicians, many senior Army officers (including their wives), and sentinels on protective duty. The coup plotters attacked the cities of Kaduna, Ibadan, and Lagos but not South East, while also blockading the Niger and Benue River within a two-day span of time before the coup plotters were subdued. The General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, also Igbo, takes control of the government of a country in upheaval, inadvertently putting Nigeria's nascent democracy on hold. Tell me why Igbo Army officers kill all northerners and took over the country... Why? I'm waiting

Because in Nigeria it gets breached as often as the government buys or has weapons it wants to hand over to its terrorists and bandits indirectly. When weapons need to be passed to terrorists. That way when the world finds out that the bullets which bandits used to terrorize civilians are special weapons sold to Nigerian govt..... The govt will just say ohhh, we can explain. The bandits raided our Barracks regularly that was how they got hold of all those weapons.

Because your comment in itself is very tribalisitc

And also, one can argue the same thing about Hausas using the July coup and the 1983 coup

Plus the January 1966 coup was not an Ibo coup. It was a coup carried out by five leftist leaning military officers who happened to be majors, who were subdued by the Army.None of them got to achieve the goals of their coup.

The political class then made the mistake of handing over to the army instead of standing their ground, and Ironsi made the mistake of accepting military rule.

Let us stop blaming the crimes of one person on the whole tribe.

P.S

Yes the white people imposed democracy on us...and yes it is the worst form of government, but the autocracy we were practicing before the whites was far worse.

What wrong with this comment? Is there something inaccurate? Or we will not talk about the past...

In January 1966, some senior Nigerian army officers, mostly of the Igbo ethnic group, assassinated key politicians during a coup in the West African state.

Those killed included Ahmadu Bello, a revered leader in the north.

After1970 Many Igbo still feel sidelined in Nigerian politics, as since the civil war no-one from the ethnic group has become president.

Who started all the chaos? in other to dominate, because they see everyone as inferior they always make wrong calculations. y'all just can't keep threatening Nigerians with secessions while you're enjoying the settings. you should all go back to the south east erect a border so that we will know you are serious.

Killing of Ahmed gulag is still fresh, Insulting everyone on social media is useless just try something better.

I think y'all would have done better if y'all had handled it with a little bit more intelligence, in the past. I think now that Ojukwu… thought he was Jesus Christ.

He thought he could do magic. If he had slowed down and allowed some people who were with him to advise him properly, y'all would have come out better than you did.

From my deep analysis of the present political climate in Nigeria, I think the Ibos are not interested about 2023 presidential ticket. I see a lot of talks in the south east region that isn't backed with the necessary movement that is expected to lead one to the promise land.

Come 2023, I see the presidential ticket zoned to the South West due to the strong motions taking place in that region.

This simply shows the colossal failure of our security system in Nigeria. France recalls its ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia to protest Biden’s submarine deal.
President Emmanuel Macron of France decided to recall his country’s ambassador to the United States, according to a statement from the foreign minister.
President Emmanuel Macron of France decided to recall his country’s ambassador to the United States, according to a statement from the foreign minister.

France announced on Friday that it was immediately recalling its ambassadors to the United States and Australia in protest of President Biden’s announcement of an agreement to provide nuclear-powered submarines to Australia without consulting French officials.

In a statement, the French foreign minister said the decision was made by President Emmanuel Macron.

“At the request of the President of the Republic, I have decided to immediately recall our two ambassadors to the United States and Australia to Paris for consultations,” said Jean-Yves Le Drian, the foreign minister. “This exceptional decision is justified by the exceptional gravity of the announcements made on 15 September by Australia and the United States.”

The decision by Mr. Macron deepened the rift between the two longstanding allies over the submarine deal, which American and Australian officials kept secret from the French until just before the announcement on Wednesday.

In the statement announcing that the ambassadors would return temporarily to Paris — a severe diplomatic step that is usually used against adversaries — Mr. Le Drian made it clear that his country saw the actions of the two nations as a serious breach of trust.

He said the U.S.-Australia partnership, which will result in the abandonment of a previous submarine agreement between Australia and France, constitutes “unacceptable behavior between allies and partners, the consequences of which affect the very conception we have of our alliances, our partnerships and the importance of the Indo-Pacific for Europe.”

That language echoed the bitter comments from Mr. Le Drian and other French officials on Thursday, suggesting that the anger felt at the top levels of Mr. Macron’s government was more than a fleeting temper tantrum.

American officials have conceded that they first informed the French on Wednesday morning, hours before Mr. Biden’s announcement of the deal. They also said that top American officials had tried, unsuccessfully, to schedule meetings with their French counterparts before news of the deal leaked in the Australian and American press.

In a briefing with reporters on Friday before the recall announcement by the French government, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, downplayed the damage to the relationship between the two countries.

“As the president said, we cooperate closely with France on shared priorities both in the Indo-Pacific region and we’ll continue to do so here in the Security Council,” she said. “Good friends have disagreements, but that’s the nature of friendship and that’s — because you’re friends, you can have disagreement and continue to work on those areas of cooperation.”

She added: “We will continue to work with our French colleagues on areas of cooperation and address any tensions in our relationship, but we don’t see those tensions changing the nature of our friendship.”

But the move by the French to recall their ambassador to the United States, Philippe Étienne, in order to consult with other officials about the American decision is the kind of step usually taken to punish another country, signaling a bad relationship.

In March of this year, Russia recalled its ambassador to the United States after Mr. Biden said in an interview that President Vladimir V. Putin would “pay a price” for interference in the 2020 presidential election. Mr. Biden also agreed that Mr. Putin was a “killer.”

Biden administration officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the French decision to recall their ambassador.
