The Nigerian military and extremist sect,
Boko Haram, have reached an immediate
ceasefire, the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex
Badeh, said Friday.
There were reports the two sides were
having talks over the release of more than
200 schoolgirls abducted by the group
April 14.
Mr. Badeh ordered all field officers to
comply with the agreement.
Boko Haram has sacked several
communities in north east Nigeria and has
killed more than 13,000 deaths in a five-
year long bloody campaign.

Less than 24 hours after he formally
declared to run for president, a former
Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, has
picked the expression of interest and
nomination forms to run for the nation’s
highest office on the platform of the
opposition All Progressives Congress,
APC.
Mr. Buhari, who is running for the fourth
time, shortly after picking the forms at the
National Secretariat of the APC in Abuja,
said that the N27.5million levy for the
forms were exorbitant but that he was
helpless in getting it reduced.
“It’s a pity I couldn’t influence this
amount to be put down as in the case of
ladies and the disable that intend to
participate. I always look left and right in
our meetings but I could not read
sympathy, so I kept my trap.
“But I felt heavily sorry for myself because
I don’t want to go and ask somebody to
pay for my nomination forms, because I
always try to pay myself, at least for the
nomination.
“N27 million is a big sum, thankfully I
have personal relationship with the
manager of my bank in Kaduna and I told
him that very soon the forms are coming,
so, whether I am on red, or green or even
black please honour it otherwise I may
lose the nomination.
“I was about to go to Kaduna this morning
and I told the Chairman but he said in that
case, you better pick your form and keep a
straight face that means there is no
excuse,” Mr. Buhari said.
In a short remark, the APC National
Chairman, John Oyegun, told Mr. Buhari
and his entourage that the party decided
to make the nomination fees high “in
order to separate the men from the boys”.

Chibok Girls
abduction, singer,
Alicia Keys led a
group of #
BringBackOurGirls protesters and
stormed the Nigerian consulate in
New York on Tuesday.
Carrying different placards and chanting
‘When do we want them? Now! Now!
Alive!’, the protesters raised awareness
about the missing girls, noting that their
story is in danger of being forgotten.
Over 200 schoolgirls had been abducted
by members of the Boko Haram terrorist
group on April 14
and although some of the girls managed to
escape, most of them are still in captivity
and their fates unknown.
Alicia Keys who was also celebrating her
son’s fourth birthday wrote on her
instagram: “On my lil guys birthday I
stand with the mothers of Chibok!!”
The pregnant star was also joined by her
husband, Swizz Beatz.
“Today is my son’s birthday and it is also
making me stand in solidarity with all the
mothers of the Chibok girls who have
been abducted for six months and are still
missing,’ she said.
“It is just outrageous that that’s going on
“Some people have even told me they’ve
heard things about ‘there’s been progress,’
but there hasn’t been progress because the
girls aren’t back.’
“So I think that we get mixed information.
We don’t know, so we just have to keep
being made aware of what’s happening,”
she said.

The World Health Organisation, WHO,
said on Wednesday in Geneva that it may
declare Nigeria and Senegal Ebola-free
within days if they complete a 42-day
period with no new cases.
A statement from WHO indicated that the
completion date for Nigeria would be next
Monday, October 20.
“If the active surveillance for new cases
that is currently in place continues, and no
new cases are detected, WHO will declare
the end of the outbreak of Ebola virus
disease in Nigeria next Monday, October
20 and Senegal on Friday 17 October, it
said.
WHO said this had become imperative
because 42 days from the time when the
last person with high risk exposure tests
negative for the virus, gives sufficient
confidence to declare an outbreak over.
“The 42-day period is twice the generally
accepted maximum incubation period of
the virus,” it said.
However, it said that some incubation
periods were longer, but in 95 per cent of
cases, the incubation period was between
one and 21 days.
It said in 98 per cent cases it was no
longer than 42 days.
WHO said that the virus could survive
even longer, remaining for as much as 90
days in the semen of an infected person.
It noted that outside West Africa, the
spread of the disease had been confirmed
in Spain and the United States.
Possible cases have been investigated in
several other countries, but none has yet
turned out to be Ebola.
The WHO said it was concerned by media
reports that some countries facing a
possible first Ebola case had declared the
cases to be negative within hours.
“Such rapid determination of infection
status is impossible, casting grave doubts
on some of the official information that is
being communicated to the public and the
media,” it said.
WHO called on countries without
recognised laboratories specialising in
viral haemorrhagic fever testing to send
their first 50 negative specimens to a
WHO collaborating centre.
It cautioned that all countries should have
their first 25 positive tests double-
checked.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday
ignored the BringBackOurGirls
campaigners who marched towards his
office to seek the release of more than
200 Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko
Haram.
The snub was the second from the
president since the girls were seized six
months ago.
The protesters announced Monday they
will meet the president Tuesday after
their first attempt in May failed as police
barred them from reaching the Aso Rock
presidential villa.
The team was halted at the Eagles Square
before a presidential delegation, led by
the government’s secretary, Pius Anyim,
addressed them.
This time, October 14, exactly six months
after armed insurgents burst into the
Chibok school compound and took
hundreds of girls hostage, the
campaigners said they will “engage with”
the president and urge a speedy rescue of
the girls.
Early Tuesday, the government stepped up
security around the villa with armed
officers stationed at strategic locations to
wade off protesters.
The march was scheduled to begin at
Unity Fountain, located close to
Transcorp Hilton Hotels, Maitama, and to
proceed to the State House through the
Federal Secretariat.
But by 8.20 a.m., the government
deployed a large team of armed officers at
the two major gates leading to the Villa,
apparently to forestall possible
breakdown of order.
At the gate approaching from the Fire
Service side of Asokoro, armed policemen
and soldiers were stationed at the traffic
light junction before the usual security
checkpoint.
There were similar deployments at the
federal secretariat end of the entrance.
Armed police officers and soldiers from
the Brigades of Guards were stationed at a
spot between the Villa Gate and the access
road that leads to the National Assembly.
By late afternoon, campaigners marched
through streets to the president’s office
but were stopped at Yakubu Gowon
Crescent where the president again
refused to meet them, merely despatching
his female ministers to address the group.

Women Affairs, Zainab Maina; Water
Resources, Sarah Ochekpe; Environment,
Laurentia Mallam, and Lands and
Housinf, Akon Eyakenyi.

Contrary to belief that two Nigerians and
an Israeli are being held in South Africa
for smuggling $9.3 million cash into that
country, no one is being detained over the
matter, the South African Police service
has told PREMIUM TIMES.
There had been widespread reports that
two Nigerians and an Israeli national were
arrested and detained in South Africa
after they attempted to smuggle into that
country US$9.3 million apparently meant
for buying arms for the Nigerian
intelligence service.
The men landed at Lanseria International
Airport, Johannesburg, on September 5 in
a private jet owned by the President of the
Christian Association of Nigeria,
Oritsejafor, with the money stashed in
three suitcases.
At the time, the South Africa Revenue
Service, SARS, said customs officers
became suspicious when the passengers’
luggage were unloaded and put through
the scanners.
The National Prosecuting Authority, NPA,
in South Africa said there was an invoice
for helicopters and armaments intended
to be used in Nigeria.
Two black plastic suitcases, filled with 90
blocks each containing US$100,000 in
notes, with combination locks, were
seized, as well as two pieces of hand
luggage also containing US currency,
according to City Press.
The Israeli national, Eyal Mesika, had the
combination to open the locks.
Under South African laws, a person
entering or leaving the country is expected
to carry cash not exceeding US$2,300, or
the equivalent in foreign currency notes.
The identities of the Nigerians on the
plane remained unknown and most
Nigerians believe they and the Israeli
were still being held as investigation
continues.
But responding to PREMIUM TIMES
enquiry, Paul Ramaloko, the
spokesperson of the country’s police
service, said no arrest was made after the
arms money was intercepted and
confiscated.
“No one was arrested on this day,” Mr.
Ramaloko, a captain in the South African
Police, told this newspaper. “We only
seized the money.”
The police spokesperson however
wouldn’t divulge the names of the other
passengers on the plane.
“We can only name people who are
criminally charged,” he said. “In this
matter, no one has been charged. We are
only talking about one person who
checked in the luggage.
“The other people were allowed to go
soon as they were cleared.”
When asked whether the person who
checked in the luggage was the Israeli who
had the combination to open the locks of
the suitcases containing the U.S. currency,
Mr. Ramaloko said he was not sure.
On the progress of investigation into the
matter, the police service’s spokesperson
said, “The investigation is continuing.
We will be guided by the outcomes on the
investigation if anyone should be held
criminally accountable.”
The South African authorities have since
confiscated yet another US$5.7 million
arms money from Nigeria.
As with the first deal, South Africa’s Asset
Forfeiture Unit of the National
Prosecuting Authority has seized the
funds for allegedly being the proceeds of
illegal transactions, reports say.
The second transaction was between
Cerberus Risk Solutions, an arms broker
in Cape Town, and Societe D’Equipments
Internationaux, said to be a Nigerian
company based in Abuja.
The deal, according to reports by South
African City Press newspaper, fell apart
after Cerberus which had earlier received
from Nigeria R60 million (N1.02 billion)
in its account at Standard Bank, tried to
repay the money as it could not resolve its
registration formalities with the South
African authorities.
“Cerberus was previously registered as a
broker with the National Conventional
Arms Control Committee (NCACC), but
the registration expired in May this year,”
City Press said.
“The marketing and contracting permits
also expired at the same time. The
company has since applied for re-
registration, but the application lay in the
NCACC’s mailbox for more than two
months.
“Sources told Rapport that Cerberus
apparently tried to pay the money back to
the Nigerian company, after which the
bank became suspicious,” the paper
reported.
The paper added that while the NPA’s
Asset Forfeiture Unit subsequently
obtained a court order in the South
Gauteng High Court to seize the money,
the NPA spokesperson Nathi Mncube,
said there were no indications the two
transactions were related.
The Nigerian government has since
claimed ownership of the seized funds,
denying the deal was unlawful and
warning South Africa of its investment in
Nigeria.
In a terse reaction to what appears a
potential diplomatic spat between the two
countries, the Nigerian government
denied the second transaction was illegal
and reminded South Africa of how Nigeria
has provided a beneficial environment for
South African companies like MTN, DSTV
and a host of others to do business
unhindered.
“It is our hope that South Africa would
reciprocate this noble gesture,” the
National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki,
said, with a vow to eradicate Boko Haram
regardless of the antics of “fifth
columnists”.
Mr. Dasuki, named by the South African
newspaper as the official who signed off
the first controversial deal, confirmed the
second transaction occurred as reported
but firmly denied it was conducted
illegally.
“We want to state clearly that a business
transaction actually took place between a
legitimate company in Nigeria and
another legitimate one in South Africa
through the bank,” said Mr. Dasuki
through a spokesperson, Karounwi
Adekunle.
“In the course of events, the South African
company could not perform and decided
to refund the money. What is illegitimate
in this transaction done through the
bank?” he queried.

The court papers were reportedly filed in
the Mthatha High Court and had been sent
to the respondent, according to
Madikizela-Mandela’s attorney, Mvuzo
Notyezi. He provided no further details,
reported The Times.
Notyezi reportedly wrote a letter in
August to Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang
Moseneke, one of the executors of
President Mandela’s will. In the letter,
Notyezi explained that Customary Law
dictates that the rights to the property
belong to his client and her descendants.
“This position becomes applicable
irrespective of whether the wife was
divorced or not,” Notyesi was quoted as
writing, “It is only in this home that the
children and grandchildren of Mrs
Madikizela-Mandela can conduct their
own customs and tradition…”.
Meanwhile, a photograph of a pile of court
papers has been circulating on social
media. The papers, stamped by The
Registrar of the High Court of South
Africa, bear Madikizela-Mandela’s name
as “The Applicant’ and a list of seven

undervalued.

because of various socio-economic and
cultural reasons and women are among the
most affected by conflicts and violence.
Empowering their participation in the
community and the workforce greatly
increases economic growth, reduces
poverty, enhances societal well-being, and
helps ensure sustainable development in all
countries.
It is against this background that the
African Union Heads of State and
Government have dedicated next year,
2015, as the “Year of Women’s
Empowerment and Development towards
Africa’s Agenda 2063″. As a prelude to
these celebrations, the African Union
Commission is celebrating this year’s Africa
Youth Day under the theme: ‘Delivering on
the Potential of Africa’s Young women.’
Celebrated on the 1st of November, The
African Youth Day aims to promote an
increased recognition of youth as key
agents for social change and economic
growth in all aspects of African society.
The event also aims to contribute and
channel the youth motivation, energy and

KAMPALA, Uganda — Three days after a
fatal case of Marburg hemorrhagic fever
was diagnosed in Uganda, 99 people are
under isolation in four different locations
across the East African country, as field
epidemiologists and surveillance officers
continue to closely monitor all people
who got into contact with only victim.
More than 60 health workers form the
bulk of people under isolation after they
were identified as having contact with a
30-year old male health worker who died
September 28 of Marburg — an Ebola-like
hemorrhagic fever.
“As of today, a total of 99 contacts are
under follow up. All the contacts are still
in a healthy condition,” Dr. Jane Ruth
Aceng, director general for health services
in Uganda, said in the latest update on the
outbreak on Tuesday.
“The National Taskforce through the field
epidemiologists and surveillance officers
continues to closely monitor all people
who got into contact with this confirmed
case,” she noted.
The dead health worker was a
radiographer in a hospital in the capital of
Kampala and also at Mpigi District Health
Center IV, places where authorities say he
made contact with colleagues.
Aceng revealed that at least 11 people
have tested negative after results from
Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI)
indicate that although the suspects had
developed signs and symptoms similar to
that of the disease, they did not contract
the virus.
“However, for those who continue to have
signs, tests will be run again after three
days,” Dr. Aceng said.
Among those who tested negative include
are the brother of the deceased; two
health workers from a children HIV/AIDS
hospital; seven persons from Mpigi
Health Center IV; and two relatives of the
deceased who participated in the burial.
“When he felt ill on September 17, he
traveled back to Mpigi for treatment since
he felt more comfortable with a facility
that he had worked with for a long time, a
duration the disease was spread,” said a
statement by health authorities last
Sunday.
Marburg virus was first identified in 1967,
when 31 people became sick in Germany
and Yugoslavia in an outbreak that was
eventually traced back to laboratory
monkeys imported from Uganda. Since
then the virus has appeared sporadically,
with just a dozen outbreaks on record,
many — including the current situation —
involving just a single patient.
Marburg virus causes symptoms similar
to Ebola, beginning with fever and
weakness and often leading to internal or
external bleeding, organ failure and death.
The death rate runs as high as 80 percent,
although it was significantly lower in the
initial outbreak when patients were cared
for in relatively modern, European
hospitals.
The most recent outbreak, also in Uganda,
in 2012, killed four out of 15 patients,
according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
On Tuesday, CDC Director Thomas
Frieden pointed to the most recent
Marburg case as an example of how a
deadly virus could be contained.
“We’ve done important work in Uganda to
help the Ugandans better have a
laboratory network so they can find cases,
have a response network with disease
detectives who can follow up and have an
emergency operations center to trace
individual cases,” Frieden said.
The extensive contact tracing included
tracking an embalmer back to Kenya,
where he was tested and found not to be
infected with Marburg.
“I mention this, because oftentimes in
public health, what gets noticed is what
happens and it’s hard to see what doesn’t
happen,” Frieden continued, noting that
there have so far been no additional cases.
“That may not make headlines, but it does
give us confidence that we can control
Ebola in West Africa.”

There were anxieties in part of Osun state Friday evening as rumour went round that the Appeal Court in Akure had sacked members of the National

ruling sacked Osun representatives at the

Communication to Governor Rauf
Aregbesola Semiu Okanlawon, said there
was no iota of truth in the story.

Lying comes to their naturally. Sacking of
any legislator only exists in the
imagination of these habitual liars.”
A member of the executive council of the
state who is also a lawyer Ajibola Basiru
in his reaction to thelopment gave a
concise legal explanation to the rumour
saying ”Before the conduct of 2011
election, some aspirants under the banner
of the PDP approached the court in Suit
No. FHC/OS/26/2011 for an injunction
restraining the Resident Electoral
Commissioner from supervising the
conduct of the election into the National
and State House of Assembly.
“It is pertinent to note that the court did
not stop the INEC from conducting the
election but merely restrained the REC
from supervising the election.
“INEC in her wisdom immediately filed a
stay of execution and Notice of Appeal.
“The affected candidates who won the
election on the banner of the ACN equally
filed an application forjoinder which was
granted by the same Court while the
application for joinder filed by ordinary
voters was refused by the same court
which is now a subject of appeal at the
Court of Appeal Akure.
“However, while the appeal against
injunction is still pending at the Court of
Appeal Akure, the claimant (PDP) went
back to the Federal High Court Osogbo
for a stay of proceedings pending the
determination of the appeal, a task that
should ordinarily be undertaken by the
defendants.
“At the court of Appeal today the court
raised the issue of competence of the
Notice of Appeal filed by INEC against the
Injunction and struck out the Notice of
Appeal for being incompetent while the
appeal filed by the other party is still
pending and will be heard on the 31st of
October, 2014.
“There was no mention of any
cancellation, removal or anything
partaining to the tenure of those elected
in 2011 election. It is therefore laughable
that the same party who prayed for stay of
proceedings will now go out to celebrate a
phantom victory knowing fully well that
the substantive matter is well and alive at
the Federal High Court Osogbo.
“What is more, the import of today‘s
rulling is clearly academic as the act upon
which the injunction is based has been
completed.”
Acting chairman of the APC in Osun Elder
Lowo Adebiyi asked the people of Osun to
ignore the rumour.
“We think our people by now should be
used to the lying capacity of PDP. No one
can rival them in lies. They have o

The Adamawa State Governor, Bala
Ngilari, who is stranded alongside over
150 other Arik Air passengers, has
rejected a special traveling arrangement
made for him by his aides, offering to wait
through the flight ordeals with other
passengers.
Mr. Ngilari’s aides were able to get at
least six seats for the governor and his
security details and protocol officials on
an Aero flight that departed the Kano
airport about an hour after the troubled
Arik flight arrived.
An associate of the governor on the Arik
flight, Adamu Garbajo, said Mr. Ngilari
rebuffed all entreaties by his staff to
abandon the Arik flight and depart in the
Aero flight.
“He asked us to give one of the seats to
one of the stranded passengers on
wheelchair,” Mr. Garbajo said. “But the
passenger also refused to leave, saying she
would wait with other passengers.
“The governor is insisting that it would be
inappropriate for him to travel with
fellow citizens from Adamawa only to
abandon them midway in Kano because
the flight is troubled.”
Mr. Ngilari had during the troubled Arik
flight moved round the cabin, greeting and
shaking hands with all passengers aboard
the plane.
About four hours after it grounded its
faulty plane in Kano, Arik is yet to arrive
with an alternative aircraft to airlift the
stranded passengers.
The airline had promised that another
plane, sent from Lagos, would arrive Kano
at 9:45 p.m. But one hour later, that has
not happened.

About 200 passengers on Arik Air’s 3:15
p.m flight from Yola to Abuja are
currently stranded in Kano after their
flight was diverted to Kano and then
grounded after the pilot announced a
mechanical fault.
On board the flight is the new governor of
Adamawa state, Bala Ngilari, and other
officials of the Adamawa state
government.
Flight W3 409 was scheduled for 3:15 p.m
but as usual with Arik, the flight was
delayed for at least an hour.
The plane then flew for close to 40
minutes. But when passengers thought
they were nearing the end of their
journey, a member of the cabin crew
announced that it was raining in Abuja
and that it would be difficult for the plane
to land.
The flight was then diverted to Kano.
Shortly afterwards, the airline’s officials
announced the plane was refueling and
would soon continue its journey.
But minutes later, the pilot announced
that the plane had developed mechanical
fault and would not be able to fly. He said
he had contacted his company’s
headquarters to send another plane to
take the passengers to Abuja.
As at the time of this report at 8:30 p.m.,
passengers are spread on the tarmac,

The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure has
sacked all Osun Senators, House of
Representatives Members, House of
Assembly members who emerged winner
in the election conducted by controversial
Osun INEC Resident Electoral
Commissioner, Amb Rufus Akeju in 2011.
Justice M. I. Sheila who read the lead
judgement said Akeju was partisan,
according to evidence available to the
court and therefore not eligible to conduct
the 2011 Elections.
The Judge ruled that AKEJU ought not to
have presided over the elections in Osun
State as the INEC REC.
The appeal court therefore nullified all
elections conducted by INEC in Osun State
in 2011 and ordered for fresh elections are
expected into the all House of Assembly,
Senatorial and Federal House of
Representatives seats in Osun state.
The PDP in Osun State had contested the
propriety of Akeju, a former Personal
Assistant to APC National leader, Senator
Bola Tinubu conducting the
Osun State elections as INEC REC and
secured a Court Injunction restraining
Akeju from conducting the election.
The Electoral body contrary to court
ruling allowed Akeju to conduct 2011
general elections as Osun State Resident
Electoral Commissioner.
It would be recalled that INEC Chairman,
Prof Attahiru Jega ordered Akeju to
proceed on leave to allow other REC to
oversee the August 9 governorship
election won by Rauf Aregbesola of All
Progressives Congress.
Meanwhile, Osun State PDP has hailed the
judgment of the Appeal Court adding that
the party will also reclaim its stolen
mandate from Aregbesola.

Constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay,
has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to
make public his assets.
Sagay, who is a Senior Advocate of
Nigeria, said this when our correspondent
asked him to respond to the controversies
surrounding the President’s net worth.
The Special Adviser to the President on
Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati,
had threatened to sue a foreign website,
RichestLifestyle.com, which adjudged
Jonathan as the sixth richest African
President if it did not retract the news.
Abati further stated that the report
insinuated that Jonathan had corruptly
enriched himself.
In a media chat with journalists on NTA
in 2012, Jonathan, when asked why he had
not declared his assets, said, “I don’t give
a damn. That is a matter of principle and I
am not going to declare. It is not the
President declaring his asset that will end
Boko Haram.”
However, Sagay told our correspondent
on Thursday that Jonathan erred by not
declaring his asset when he became
President.
He said, “I think the precedence that late
President Umaru Yar’adua established
which was followed by Jonathan was very
good and I think it was a mistake on the
part of President Jonathan when he
assumed power in his own right, to refuse
to declare his assets. He must lead by
example.
“Nigeria is a country that is ridden with
corruption. So if the President of the
country says ‘these are my assets and
when I leave office, I will declare again
and you will see that I have lived a
straightforward life,’ that would have been
very encouraging.
“It will be very good for him to declare, it
will set a standard that the leadership of
the country will follow and will create a
high level of transparency. I hope he does
so.”

His family is devastated. The woman he planned to marry haunted by the "what ifs." And many are wondering why Thomas Eric Duncan died when several other Ebola patients treated in the United States survived. Duncan was hospitalized eight days after he arrived from Liberia, and later tested positive for Ebola. He died Wednesday, but not much is known about his medical history.

Did Duncan know he had Ebola? Did Duncan get the best treatment? Unlike the American patients, who were quickly tested and quarantined at the first sign of Ebola, Duncan wasn't. Duncan arrived in Dallas from Liberia on September 20, and he made his initial visit to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on September 25. He was treated for a fever, vomiting and abdominal pain -- all symptoms of Ebola. But he was sent home with antibiotics and was not screened for the virus. Relatives say he told hospital staff he'd come from Liberia. Three days later, he was hospitalized in worse condition and was quickly isolated. He became the first case of the deadly virus diagnosed on American soil. "What if they had taken him right away? And what if they had been able to get treatment to him earlier?" said pastor George Mason of Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas.
He didn't get an experimental drug immediately Duncan received experimental medicine on October 4 -- six days after admission to the hospital. It was a far longer wait than four other Ebola patients treated in the United States. Those patients -- two each at Atlanta's Emory University Hospital
and the University of Nebraska Medical Center -- got experimental medicine immediately. They're all U.S. citizens; Duncan was a Liberian. His family is claiming bias. "We feel he didn't get the medicine and treatment for the disease because he's African and they don't consider him as important as the other three," said Josephus Weeks, his nephew. Not so, the hospital says.
Since the drugs are still experimental, individual hospitals have to file the paperwork with the Food and Drug Administration for permission to use them. The hospital declined to tell CNN
when it filed for permission. He got a different experimental drug Duncan got the experimental drug Brincidofovir.

A third American patient received TKM- Ebola -- another experimental drug approved by the FDA recently for wider use.

The Atlanta and Nebraska facilities knew
in advance they were expecting Ebola
patients, a crucial element for a disease so rare in the United States. Hospitals that took care of the four are also among the most well-equipped nationwide to battle the deadly virus. Despite lack of notification, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital said Duncan got top-notch care and his medical team consulted daily with the CDC and Emory. Information on his case has been muddled Details on Duncan's background have not been as clear-cut. His relatives said he made it clear to the hospital that he had just come from Liberia. His symptoms pointed at Ebola, they said. Initially, the hospital said Duncan was "not exhibiting symptoms specific to Ebola" when he first went to the hospital. And, they said, details about his travel history weren't communicated to doctors. But later, the hospital said a flaw in electronic records had kept doctors from seeing his travel history. Then it said his travel history had been documented and was available to his care team. Family believes his insurance status played a role Duncan had just arrived from Liberia to visit his girlfriend and son, and probably had no insurance.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who's serving as a spokesman for the family, said that was a concern.
"I would tend to think that those who do
not have insurance, those who do not have Medicaid, do not have the same priorities as those who do," the civil rights leader said.
But the hospital denied the claim.
Duncan was treated like everyone else,
"regardless of nationality or ability to pay for care," Texas Health Presbyterian
Hospital said.

existing within our present democracy, with the same authoritarian practices of

can come when, since independence, the same people are playing a soccer game of power with Nigeria, even while there are potential youths with creative minds
out there. Even the good few leaders are pessimistic about carrying the youths along.
Perhaps I should quote the words of A.P Giannini (1870 – 1949), as saying: “I leave
everything to the young men. You’ve got to give youthful men authority and responsibility if you’re going to build up an organization. Otherwise you’ll always
be the boss yourself and you won’t leave anything behind you.” I believe the call is now! Let the youths be allowed to participate at all level of policy
and decision-making for a great and healthy democracy, and as well to save the
future of our establishments. As Francis Bacon (1561 – 1626) put it, “Young men are fitter to invent than to judge; fitter for execution than for counsel; and fitter for new projects than for settled business.”

pains. The Redeemed Christian Church has
brought more harm than good to
the constant or partial users of Lagos Ibadan
expressway and i urge the
government to scrap the 3 day camping.
Sitting for hours in a stuffy
and thick traffic and weighing the disadvantages of
the camp to its
advantages to the larger populace, I discovered the
negative impacts of
the camp far out weighs its profits. A curious mind
would ask, since
they are out to worship, what possible harm could
they cause? My
experiences today, October 3 2014 should satisfy
their curiousity.
The traffic created by Redeemed camp causes
accidents
I saw a dead man as I write in a blue bus, a young
man in the mud, killed
by accident. The man was poorly dressed and
covered with a cloth, it
was obvious that he was in poverty and was
searching for his daily
bread. Most definitely, mad drivers on the rush
either to camp or in
evasion of the tight traffic must have killed him or
how else would a
dead man lay on the road? Does God want his
worship to supersede our
fundamental rights to life he has granted us ?or
movement in search of
food with the legs he has given us? Or man in his
greed would not just
consider. If its God that is all hearing and all-
seeing we seek,
churches on Sundays, fellowships and prayers
during the week should
suffice. If the spirit of God can’t speak to Pastor
G..O to stop the
killings by weighing the disadvantages his
innovation has caused the
federal government should connive with the spirits
to stop the camp.
The Camp poses threat insecurity to both the road
users and the locals
Due
to the density of the road during the camp, there
could be a mesh of
criminals unnoticed amongst the crowd or in the
traffic. I have heard of enough robbery cases on the deadly Lagos Ibadan
expressway which is
most definitely inevitable with the existence of the
camp. In cases of
robbery, the inept Nigerian police that finds it
difficult to arrest a
criminal on open field, how can they control
onslaughts in an
overpopulated area? I must admit as bitter it might
taste, that the
government should do its duty by making security a
priority, thus
banning the camp. Ever heard of an armed robber
in GO’s house? Or road?
Let the holy spirits protect him but not by making
us insecure.
The Camp causes health risks
Following
my observation, the camp causes health risks.
How? the traffic wouldn’t
avail a sick person prompt healthcare . Further the
three days could
overwhelm the hospitals within and beyond the
camp thus creating a
problem. Just imagine an epidemic breaks out or
some wounded person
needs treatment.Would God want us to endanger
our health or that of
another because we want to attend Adeboye’s
camp ? Or Jesus preaches it?

Africa’s youngest Ph.D holder, Hallowed
Oluwadara Olaoluwa, is among 29 Ekiti
indigenes who would be honoured with
the state’s merit award in the 2014 edition
of the annual event billed for Ado-Ekiti on
Wednesday, October 1, 2014.
The Ekiti State-born Dr. Olaoluwa
stormed the academic world earlier in the
year when he bagged his Ph.D in
Mathematics from the University of Lagos
at the age of 24.
He is considered the youngest ever in the
continent. He will be receiving the award
in the academic and research category.
According to a statement by the Chief
Press Secretary to the Governor, Olayinka
Oyebode, this year’s merit award would
hold at the Ekiti Parapo Square which will
be commissioned same day.
The 12,000-seater square, described as
one of the legacy projects of the Fayemi
administration, would be commissioned
by former Head of State, General
Muhammadu Buhari, supported by other
eminent Nigerians.
Other distinguished Ekitis to be honoured
include the first Nigerian Professor of
Mathematics, the late Prof Adegoke
Olubunmo and foremost historian, the
late Emeritus Professor Jacob Ade-Ajayi,
who would be awarded post humously.
Elemure Ogunyemi, a chief, who recently
passed on would also receive a post
humous award.
Also on the list are Elizabeth Adegbite, a
former President of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN);
ace musician, Yinka Ayefele; Emily
Olaboye , a respected mat weaver and
Jude Michael Osagwu, who won the Best
Teacher in Nigeria Award in 2013.
The State Commissioner for Special
Duties, Apalara Wole-Adewunmi, who is
chairman of the planning committee, said
the award is to recognise excellence
among citizens and residents of the state
who have distinguished themselves in
different ways.

After years of historic initiative, the
creator of the Nigeria Green, White and
Green national flag, Taiwo Akinkunmi,
has been appointed a Special Assistant to
President Goodluck Jonathan.
Akinkunmi, in his capacity as SA to
President Jonathan has been placed on a
lifetime salary.
The national flag is an adaptation of the
winning entry from Taiwo Akinkunmi in a
competition held in 1959.
Akinwunmi’s original proposal
The original had a red sun with streaming
rays placed at the top of the white stripe.
This was removed by the judges and the
flag has not been altered since.
Like other countries, Nigeria has special
ensigns for civil and naval vessels. Some of
its states also have flags.
The designer, Akinkunmi, was a twenty
three-year-old student then. He was
studying at Norwich Technical College in
England when he saw an advertisement in
a newspaper that entries were being
accepted for the design of a new National
flag.
In 1959 Akinkunmi’s design was chosen as
the winner and was first officially used on
October 1, 1960, Nigeria’s Independence

Ladies often tend to bother more about their outward appearance. We worry more about how well the clothe fits. We want to wear the latest hairstyle and spend hundreds of thousands just to get the Beyonce kind of weaves. You must fix those false lashes and wear the contact to get men screaming 'wow' each time they see you. You must take time to polish and retouch those pictures before posting them just for the gullible to fall cheap. We spend so much on designer cosmetics and bags. We want those six inches heels because they make us to look more elegant. We want heads to turn when we walk into that social gathering. We worry about those curves that speak of femininity. We bother about good voice and how well we speak English. We take lessons on style and catwalk.
Some of these are necessary for a complete woman. I love and often go for good things and I daily work on myself to stand out wherever I am. But there is something more important than all these. How much have you spent developing your intellect? How many books have you read this 2014? How much do you spend on books, workshops and conferences? What do you do with your time and money spent on Internet? Is your internet for Badoo, BB pings, Whatsapp, and their likes when it should be more for reading? How many of our local delicacies have you learned to prepare this year? How many steps have you taken towards the actualization of your dream this year? The dream may not come alive this year but taking the necessary steps gets you closer to that day. How many things have you done to ensure a better and more beautiful relationship with your spouse? What lessons have you learnt to help you be a better mother to your children?
Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears The Lord shall forever be praised. Bother more about what is in your head and not what is on your body!From the way most unmarried ladies act, I don't think they have any other dream apart from getting married, but I always ask, after marriage what's next? nothing I guess, than bugging the man that marries any.
Then some married ones work so hard every day to be single again. Its just a rat race.
U won't see women discussing about the place their children will attend holiday lessons and a good maths teacher to take them on maths but u will only hear them talking about the clothes they got for them at a very high price and how the foolish husband has refused to bring money for it.

Abigail Afolabi, 25, returned to Nigeria
after concluding her first degree at the
Harbin Medical University, China. She
returned home to celebrate her
graduation as a medical doctor. Her
family in Kaduna State was throwing a
party to celebrate her successful feat, and
she decided to spend two weeks in
Nigeria.
While the celebration was on, she received
an e-mail from her school informing her
of a scholarship offer to proceed for her
master’s degree.
She accepted the offer.
The school then advised her to return to
China as soon as possible.
Although Abigail never fell ill nor had
contact with any of the hundreds of
persons screened and in relevant cased
treated for Ebola in Nigeria, she was made
to suffer what she called ‘humiliation’ by
Chinese authorities.
Although Abigail had been screened at the
Nigerian airport for Ebola before her
departure, on arrival at the Beijing airport
in China, a list of passengers coming from
countries affected by the Ebola outbreak
was called.
More than 3000 persons have died from
the virus in West Africa, mainly from
Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra-Leone. Dozens
of Nigerians were later infected with the
virus when Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-
American, brought the virus to the
country. Mr. Sawyer and six other
Nigerians have died from the Ebola in
Nigeria.
At the Beijing airport, Abigael’s ‘special’
group were told alight from the aircraft
before other passengers and were taken
for medical examination.
“When I arrived in China, the list of
passengers coming from countries affected
by Ebola was called by the medical officers
in Beijing, China,” she said. “We were
asked to come out of the plane before
other passengers. We were taken to a
room for examination. Body temperature
was checked and few questions were
asked, for example, do you have
headache? Are you vomiting?”
But that was not to be all. From there, she
was isolated in a room where she was
made to stay for 21 days – the incubation
period of the virus.
Ms. Afolabi was released on September 12
and has commenced her Masters
programme. Her case is, however, just
one of the many forms Nigerians suffer
discrimination as a result of Ebola.
Nigeria’s contingent to Keeping Children
Safe in Africa Conference, which held in
Cape Town from September 3 to 5, were
denied visa by the South African embassy
due to Ebola.
One of the key participants from Nigeria,
Oge Chukwudozie of Save the Children
Nigeria, who was to present a paper was
among those denied entry. Someone else,
a non-Nigerian, had to present her paper
for her.
When contacted on the efforts by the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure
there is a stop to the discrimination
Nigerians suffer, its spokesperson, Ogbole
Amedu-Ode, said he was on leave and
could not make any comment.
Some government officials have, however,
expressed concern with the apparent
stigmatisation Nigerians go through due
to the Ebola virus.
One of such is Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the
chairman of the House of Representatives
Committee on Diaspora Affairs.
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa on September 6 noted
that the stigmatization must be addressed
before it gets worse, and as a lawmaker
she would work with relevant government
agencies to do the needful. She explained
that in many instances, there were hardly
any medical checks to ascertain the health
conditions of such Nigerians.
The lawmaker cited another example of
Adeseye Adeyemi, a Nigerian who decided
to wed his Sri Lankan heartthrob in Sri
Lanka; and wanted his Nigerian-based
family to attend the reception.
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said the Adeyemi’s
“were terribly treated by Sri Lankan
authorities.”
She said all family members were
quarantined in the Sri-Lankan airport
lobby for about 18 hours with no access to
food, water, or toilet facilities. The family
was subsequently deported with no
medical check after the prolonged wait.

A former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku
Abubakar, said the Boko Haram crisis was
a deliberate ploy by the Goodluck
Jonathan-led Federal Government to
cause instability in the country for selfish
political reasons.
He disclosed this while speaking on the
Voice of America, Hausa Service on
Thursday.
“This thing (insurgency) almost came up
during our time but we crushed it
in less than a month. We have a military
that is known and respected the world
over for peace keeping.
“The military has the right leadership and
the required arms; they can end this
insurgency. But the government is
promoting this insurgency for selfish
reasons,” Mr. Abubakar said.
On whether he had the solution to end the
crisis if he became President, Mr.
Abubakar said that would not be
impossible as he had on one on one basis,
given advice to the Mr. Jonathan on how
to end the crisis but his advice were never
taken.
He insisted that the government should be
accused of complicity in the crisis which
had, for some time, appear to defy
solution.
He called on Nigerians to be united
against bad governance and terrorism.
