Nairaland GeneralBoko Haram Seize Control Of Another Nigerian Town by tmx21(op): 6:57am On Aug 22, 2014
Boko Haram has seized control of a town in northeastern Nigeria, the latest to fall into Islamist hands in the crisis-hit region and an indication of the group's increasing territorial ambitions.
The seizure of towns suggests a significant shift in strategy, more in keeping with their stated goal of carving out a strict Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria.
Residents who fled the assault on the fallen town of Buni Yadi in Yobe state said attacks began late last month and the insurgents have since taken over the main government building.
The militants have reportedly raised their flag and carried out summary executions, including of two people who were caught smoking cigarettes.
Abdullahi Bego, the spokesman for Yobe's Governor Ibrahim Geidam, could not confirm the executions.
But he toldAFP, "As I speak there are no military in Buni Yadi and locals say that Boko Haram come and go as they please.
"So many people from Buni Yadi have fled to the state capital Damaturu," he added.
There was no immediate comment from the military in the Yobe state capital Damaturu or Abuja.
But residents said the rebels, who massacred dozens of students at a boarding school in Buni Yadi in February and kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from neighbouring Borno state in April, had set up roadblocks.
"I couldn't stay any longer because I came to realise these people have come to stay," a trader said.
The United Nations has confirmed that Boko Haram had seized control of the towns of Damboa and Gwoza in Borno state in recent weeks.
There are indications that Damboa was retaken by the military in an offensive earlier this month.
"The capture and holding of territory presents a significant evolution in Boko Haram's modus operandi," said Ryan Cummings, chief Africa analyst at the South Africa-based crisis management group Red 24.
He toldAFPthat trend became evident in April, with many districts in the northeast threatened by an Islamist takeover and Nigeria's embattled military struggling to reverse the rebel gains.
A group of soldiers in Borno staged a mutiny this week after being ordered to retake Gwoza on the grounds that they had not been provided adequate weapons to fight the well-armed militants.
Cummings said Boko Haram's recent advances indicated the group was "slowly but surely out achieving its primary goal -- the creation of a caliphate in northern-eastern Nigeria governed under sharia law."
Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states have been under a state of emergency since May last year and reliable information on the conflict has proved difficult to obtain.
Few humanitarian workers are on the ground and the military has sought to restrict the flow of information.
Boko Haram is blamed for killing more than 10,000 people since its uprising began in 2009 and their violence has forced more than 600,000 people from their homes, according to the UN.

Nairaland GeneralSevere Drought Hits Brazil's Largest City by tmx21(op): 6:42am On Aug 22, 2014
A severe drought is hitting Brazil’s largest city and thriving economic capital with no end in sight, threatening the municipal water supply to millions of people.
The water at the Cantareira reservoirs, which supply about nine million of the 20 million people in the metropolitan area, is at its lowest level ever amid the region’s worst drought in 45 years.
Other reservoirs are also in distress after 15 months of overstretching.
And more dry weather is forecast.
Prosecutors have threatened to sue the state government to make it begin rationing water, warning that Sao Paulo is facing “the worst water crisis ever to hit the region and the collapse of its entire reservoir system.”
But with Governor Geraldo Alckmin up for reelection in October, his administration has vowed to handle the crisis without rationing the city’s water.
State water company Sabesp has encouraged consumers to reduce their usage but also downplayed the shortage, saying it will transfer water from other dams and use emergency reserves if necessary.
It says it has enough supplies to last until March 2015 and has vowed not to implement rationing.
- Ration by stealth? -
But many Sabesp customers suspect their supplies are already being rationed.
“Last week we went four whole days without water,” said Adilson Becerra, a 36-year-old salesman who lives in the southern suburbs.
“From one day to the next we were left without water. Nobody told us anything. From Thursday to Sunday, not a single drop came out of the tap.”
In a recent survey by newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, 46 percent of Sao Paulo residents reported having their water cut at least once so far this month, up from 35 percent in the previous survey in May.
The region’s rainy season is the southern hemisphere summer, from October to March. But the period was exceptionally dry in 2013-2014.
And another dry year is forecast for 2014-2015.
To deal with the drought, Sabesp has begun using water from the bottom of its reservoirs — so-called “dead volume” — but prosecutors told the company this posed a health risk.
The lack of rain has also hit Brazil’s main source of power, hydroelectric dams, forcing officials to turn to more expensive and more polluting thermoelectric plants.
“The situation is critical for both potable water and energy. The ideal thing would be for people to reduce their water consumption,” said Cristopher Vlavianos, the president of independent energy distributor Comerce.

Nairaland GeneralNigeria Defence Chief Says Abducted Girls Located by tmx21(op): 6:31am On Aug 22, 2014
Nigeria's military has located nearly 300 school girls abducted by Islamic extremists but fears using force to try to free them could get them killed, the country's chief of defense said Monday.
Air Marshal Alex Badeh told demonstrators supporting the much criticized military that Nigerian troops can save the girls. But he added, "we can't go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back."
He spoke to thousands of demonstrators who marched to Defense Ministry headquarters in Abuja, the capital. Many were brought in on buses, indicating it was an organized event.
Asked by reporters where they had found the girls, Badeh refused to elaborate.
"We want our girls back. I can tell you we can do it. Our military can do it. But where they are held, can we go with force?" he asked the crowd.
People roared back, "No!"
"If we go with force what will happen?" he asked.
"They will die," the demonstrators responded.
That appeared to leave negotiation the sole option, but a human rights activist close to negotiators said a deal to swap the girls for detained Boko Haram members was agreed last week and then scuttled at the last minute by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The activist who is close to those mediating between Boko Haram extremists and government officials said the girls would have been freed last week Monday.
Jonathan had already told British officials that he would not consider an exchange. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
Nigeria's military and government have faced national and international outrage over their failure to rescue the girls seized by Boko Haram militants from a remote northeastern school six weeks ago.
President Jonathan was forced this month to accept international help. American planes have been searching for the girls and Britain, France, Israel and other countries have sent experts in surveillance and hostage negotiation.
A U.S. Defense Department spokesman said the department cannot confirm the reports about the Nigerian girls at this point. The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the situation, spoke on background.
Jonathan's reluctance to accept offered help for weeks is seen as unwillingness to have outsiders looking in on what is considered a very corrupt force.
Soldiers have told The Associated Press that they are not properly paid, are dumped in dangerous bush with no supplies and that the Boko Haram extremists holding the girls are better equipped than they are.
Some soldiers have said officers enriching themselves off the defense budget have no interest in halting the five-year-old uprising that has killed thousands.
Soldiers near mutiny earlier this month fired on the car of a commanding officer come to pay his respects to the bodies of 12 soldiers who their colleagues said were unnecessarily killed by the insurgents in a night-time ambush.
The military also is accused of killing thousands of detainees held illegally in their barracks, some by shooting, some by torture and many starved to death or asphyxiated in overcrowded cells.
More than 300 teenagers were abducted from their school in the town Chibok on April 15. Police say 53 escaped on their own and 276 remain captive.
A Boko Haram video has shown some of the girls reciting Quranic verses in Arabic and two of them explaining why they had converted from Christianity to Islam in captivity. Unverified reports have indicated two may have died of snake bites, that some have been forced to marry their abductors and that some may have been carried across borders into Chad and Cameroon.
Boko Haram — the nickname means "Western education is sinful" — believes Western influences have corrupted Nigerian society and want to install an Islamic state under strict Shariah law, though the population 170 million people is divided almost equally between Christians and Muslims.

Nairaland GeneralSuspected Cases Of Nigerians In Austria Not Ebola: Ministry by tmx21(op): 10:52pm On Aug 19, 2014
Austria's health ministry gave the all-clear Tuesday evening after regional authorities earlier reported two suspected cases of Ebola in two men recently returned from Nigeria.
"The test results in both cases were negative," the health ministry said.
The news came hours after the governor of Upper Austria province, Josef Puehringer, said two men who returned last Wednesday from Lagos had been hospitalised on suspicion of carrying the deadly disease.
Blood samples were sent to a laboratory in Germany, which announced late Tuesday that the results were negative, Puehringer later said.
The two men had been hospitalised in the northern town of Voecklabruck after developing a fever following a work trip to Nigeria.
They were initially held in quarantine, while authorities also tried to locate anyone the pair may have been in contact with in case further action was needed, Puehringer said.
The World Health Organization said Tuesday that the global death toll for the virus had reached 1,229, most of them in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, with four cases in Nigeria.

Nairaland General2015: INEC Reps Agree To Military's Role by tmx21(op): 10:45pm On Aug 19, 2014
The Independently National Electoral Commission on Tuesday threw its weight behind an amendment to the Electoral Act 2010 proposed by the House of Representatives seeking to limit the participation of the military in future elections in the country.INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, spoke at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja during a one-day public hearing on a bill to amend the Electoral Act 2010.The public hearing was organised by the Jerry Manwe –led House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters. The public hearing was attended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, who promised that the bill was to ensure a level playing ground for all participants in the future elections in the country. The National Assembly had in its proposed amendment sought the insertion of a new paragraph (b) in the Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act to limit the roles of the military to “securing the distribution and delivery of electoral materials.”Speaking on the insertion of the new paragraph and other proposed amendments, Jega said giving the commission the statutory power to manage security forces during elections would help to sanitise the nation’s electoral processes.
Jega said it was the practice in many countries around the world that electoral bodies were given the power of management of security forces during elections.
He said, “On the insertion of a new section 29 (1) (b) to empower INEC to control security agencies at election time, there are a few countries that are doing this because they feel it is good practice.“In fact in some of the countries the entire management of the security forces in the period of the election are given to the electoral management body.“We did not recommend this because people are already accusing us of taking too much power. But if other stakeholders agree with this recommendation, it would help sanitise the electoral process.”

Nairaland GeneralIG Orders Lagos Airport Terror Suspect Moved To Abuja by tmx21(op): 10:32pm On Aug 19, 2014
The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, has directed that the suspected suicide bomber arrested near the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Monday be moved to Abuja.
A security source said that the IG ordered the transfer of the physically-challenged terror suspect to Abuja for immediate interrogation and investigation into his activities.
The source said that the suspected insurgent would be in Abuja on Tuesday evening in view of the urgency of the IG’s directive.
The suspected suicide bomber had attempted to bomb the annex office of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, located inside the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, when he was apprehended by security personnel on Monday.
The physically-challenged suspect whose name was yet to be ascertained was reportedly arrested with suspected explosives around his neck.
The suspect who was later handed over to the police by Airport security operatives, was subsequently taken to the Airport Police headquarters along the Ikeja- Airport road
It was learnt that the Police would conduct investigations into the issue of the arrested insurgent.
The source said that investigation would also focus on the mental state of the suspect and the veracity of the statements he was said to have made to security operatives.
It was gathered that security operatives would not rush to make any statement about the suspect in order to avoid sending out wrong information to the public.
It was further learnt that prior to the directive to move the suspect to the Force Headquarters, the Police in Lagos were looking at claims that the terror suspect might have mental challenges.
Security operatives are investigating the canisters that were said to be in custody of the suspect when he was arrested with a view to finding out whether they were Improvised Explosive Devices or not.
The source said that the security operatives would ensure a holistic investigation into the incident in spite of claims that the cripple was known in the area to be of unstable mind.
It was further stated that other security agencies like the Department of State Security could only come in after the police might have concluded their investigation and if they chose to hand over the matter to the SSS for further action.
The source said, “That suspect has been moved to Abuja; the Police are the ones investigating the matter.
“Today, the IG issued an urgent directive that the suspect should be moved to Abuja immediately and I think that has been done.
“Although, there are issues about the state of mind of the man, but we are not taking any chances; the matter would be investigated thoroughly.
“I also believe that the items that were found on him would be duly screened to find out whether they were IEDs or not.
“For now, the Police are in charge and after their investigation, if there is anything to hand him over to the SSS, they will take over from there.”
The NAMA General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Supo Atobatele, had said the suspect was nabbed while making phone calls and when accosted, his incoherent explanation led to his arrest by security operatives.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, could not be reached for comment on Tuesday as repeated calls to his phone failed to connect and he did not respond to a text message sent to him.

BusinessMy Experience With A Bitter Kola Seller by tmx21(op): 11:25am On Aug 01, 2014
After listening to different sources that bitter kola is a perfect cure for ebola, I decided to go buy some at home just in case something happens.
The first woman that I met and who was suppose to have, told me that the ones she had initially had been booked. I asked her when next she would go to market and her reply was
"that one wey i wan go buy sef, people don book am".
I couldn't stop lauging.
I went to three different stores and couldn't get what I want.
The funniest part was that the last place i went to was a small kiosk own by a fulani or thereabout; I could still vividly remember our conversation:
Me: how far aboki? You get kola?
Seller: vitter kola?
Me: yes.
He searched his shop and brought just two pieces.
Me: na only two you get?
Seller: yea vut na wan ai go sell.
I was not suprised and i brought out my wallet and handed him a 50 Naira note.
He collected it and examined the money.
Seller: akoi! Vifty nairo ko? na na na, wan kola i be vife hondred. Vor all vese area na me i get vitter kola for shop.
He handed me my fifty naira and as i couldn't afford the amount he asked for at that moment, I returned home.
.
.

My questions are:
1. Should this be happening at this time?
2. Isn't all state government suppose to provide in excess this bitter kola? (I don't know if that has been done)
3. lastly, why does even the smallest person in Nigera uses the smallest oppurtunity he/she has to enrich his pocket disregarding how inhuman it might be yet blaming the government for corruption?
SMH! Only God can help us in Nigeria.

~Anabella~
I was on bed as usual but this time even with the lights out I couldn’t grab a sleeping posture.
I was turning all over the soft and conducive bed.
“This isn’t usual” I thought to myself.
I was supposed to be fast asleep and after two hours and counting, I was still wide awake. I went to the bulb switch hoping to put it back on and continue my novel.
I took of my cover and put on my Dunlop slippers which were under my bed.
I moved towards the entrance to my room and I was feeling very uneasy – a feeling that I had not have in the past years. I moved slowly and carefully to the switch and flipped the switch.
The room was immediately illuminated by the light. I turned my head to go back to my bed and suddenly, I saw a figure positioned on my bed.
I was shocked and stunned. I just stood up from the bed some few seconds ago and I remember not having anything beside me while on the bed. I took a close look at the figure and it resembles a little girl squatting on my bed. Her hair was long and loose and it was covering her face she was putting on a violet grungy short gown and I could see her back because she was facing the wall and backing me.
I started shaking; every muscle in my bone got tensed. I couldn’t think of what next to do. I was enticed to move towards her.
I moved with great fear and was controlling my unstable heart. The light was still off and I moved slowly to where the figure was laying. I forced my legs towards the figure.
When I almost got to where the figure was laying, the figure swiftly turned its back to me.
“It was a little girl; her face was rough as if she had got marks from a fight. She was looking both sorry and scary.
“Help me! Help me!! Help me!!!” she said painfully.
As she was talking, the ceiling fan that was already of started to roll in a very murderous manner. It was so slow that the sound that it made adds a terrific background theme to the scene. I was scared to death. I heard footsteps of many kids moving towards me and I looked around but there was nothing.
“Why have I put the lights off?” I asked myself
I was filled of tremor and I screamed above my voice. I was shivering as I was staring at the figure in the bed.
I couldn’t control myself as I screamed loud but I couldn’t even hear myself scream. I ran back to the bulb switch In order to put back the light on.
I was staring at the figure on my bed, backing the switch and was blindly looking for where the switch was so that I could put the light off.
I couldn’t control my breath any longer. I closed my eyes and finally put the light back on.
Every sound that have been getting into my head stooped abruptly. I gradually opened my eyes and everything was back to the way it was before I turned off the light.
I couldn’t believe what just happened. Was it real? Was it my imagination? I ran out of my room and went to Samuel’s room.
He was fast asleep and I lay beside him. It was hard to sleep and I would say I couldn’t sleep through the night.

I stood up when it the time reads 5:20am. I went back to my room and it was looking very peaceful. I was so careful with my footstep and I was scared to touch my bed.
I sat on the wooden chair and was looking around the whole room.
The atmosphere in the room was hot. I went to the bulb switch and put off the lights. I came back to where I was sitting and I started to think about what happened.
I heard a knock on my door.
“A knock?”
Everything that I could think of was similar to what happened last mid-night.
I didn’t respond to the knock and I grew louder. I was scared and later realized that I had just switch off the lights.
I ran back to the switch and was about to put the light back on when the door was forced open.
I was afraid and I turned back to look at the person that forced my door open.
“For how long are you going to sleep without waking up?”
“Oh!” I said with a huge relief. It was my mum.
“What is going on with you nowadays?” she asked moving towards my bed.
“You have been acting weird lately. Are you ok?” she asked trying to sit herself on my bed.
“No!” I scream. “I – I mean yes –yes, I am ok” I muttered. I never wanted her to sit on the bed.
“No? Yes? Which of these am I to believe” she asked.
I shrugged and sat back on the chair.
“Mum, you know… it won’t be easy to adapt to this new apartment plus this place is so boring, scanty and abandoned house, no neighbors, no friends and the environment is even not too friendly. Is this not enough to act weird?” I said with a pale look.
“ yeah I know. You just need to endure for a little bit. I told your dad that I don’t really like anything about this house…”
“And what was his response?” I cut in.
“He said in no mean time you would be leaving for school and after a successful return from South Africa, there is a possibility of us relocating back to South Africa finally.”
“And you expect me to school here in Nigeria while you all move to South Africa? Does that make any sense?” I asked standing up from where I was sited.
“No it’s not going to be like that” she said holding my hands and trying to make me sit down beside her on the bed.
“And how is it going to be?”
“We won’t be moving that early …not till the next couple of years”
“Ok but when are you going to South Africa?”
“In the next three days. Your dad is on leave and he is going to be a helping hand over there”
I can’t just imagine myself staying alone in this scary house. I tried to persuade my mum to allow me bring in a friend so that I won’t be just alone.
“We both know I can’t approve that” She said with a hard look. She stood up from the bed and headed out of the room.
“Talk to your dad concerning that” She slammed the door.
She hates it when I make her approve an order without dad’s consent. She has done that for me several times and it has never been a good story to tell.
I stood up from the chair and comfortably sat on the bed hoping nothing bad will occur to me.
