Nairaland GeneralNigeria- Highest Twining Country In The World by tmx21(op): 6:44am On Aug 28, 2014
It's a curious, but little-known fact that the rate of twin births in West Africa is about four times higher than in the rest of the world. The centre of this twin zone is Igbo-Ora, a sleepy southwest town in Nigeria.
More twins are born here than anywhere else on earth, but nobody is quite sure why this town should be more twin prone than any other.
On the road going into the town of Igbo-Ora, there's a large stone plinth, which proudly welcomes visitors to 'the land of twins'. Here there are few households who do not have at least one set of twins.
Nigeria is the most highly populated nation in the world with an estimated 110 million people and population experts say that the country, particularly the southwest, has the world's highest twinning rate.
Whilst recent accurate figures do not exist, a study conducted by a British gynaecologist, Patrick Nylander, between 1972 and 1982 recorded an average of 45 to 50 sets of twins per 1000 live births in the southwest.
In the predominantly rural community of Igbo-Ora, multiple births are celebrated and have, over the generations, been regarded as special gifts from God. Twins are a blessing, with many pregnant women wishing for multiple births.
'Whilst twins could be considered the result of providence, other local people attribute the predominance of twins to tradition. Meanwhile, others believe it to be diet.'
Yam Births
Central to the Yoruba people's diet is the cassava, a plant with a tuber root, which can be eaten in addition to the leaves and flowers.
Research into multiple births carried out at Lagos's University Teaching Hospital has suggested that a high level of a chemical found in the Yoruba women and the peelings of the tuber could account for the high level of multiple births.
A consultant gynaecologist at the hospital explains:
'These substances are usually linked to the release of more than one egg, which usually leads to twin pregnancies. That means that there is possibly an environmental factor that encourages the high level of this chemical substance.'
The doctor, who has witnessed many multiple births at the run-down hospital, continues by linking the staple diet of the women to the prevalence of the chemical:
'Numerous works has shown that the tuber food of the Yoruba women, especially the peelings, contains a very large amount of these chemical substances. These women have a disproportionately large amount of these chemicals in their system and this encourages the release of more than one egg. There is enough reason to believe in this theory.'
So, could it be that eating tuber peelings leads to multiple births? The International Institute of Tropical Agricultural is uncertain.
Following research into the reputed high oestrogen content of a yam like vegetable called agida, Robert Asiedu is sceptical of the tuber link. Citing the specific cultivation of yams in regions of Asia for their contraceptive qualities, in an article forScience In Africamagazine, he commented:
'Nobody has provided any scientific explanation or evidence that could prove that yam consumption can cause multiple births.'
A Special Breed
Igbo-Ora is not a wealthy town, many families rely on farming for their income and resources are scarce.
Bringing up large numbers of children can be a struggle, but in many families the arrival of twins continues to be warmly welcomed as one townsman explains:
'Being a father of twins is a joy. It is a sort of honour, because you know they are a special breed from God.'

SportsDon't Blame Us If FIFA Bans Nigeria - Chukwuemeka by tmx21(op): 6:29am On Aug 28, 2014
The interim Committee set up by the parallel congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has described the action of the newly elected board led by Chris Giwa to occupy the secretariat of the NFF as illegal.
Ephraim Chukwuemeka, a member of the interim Committee who visited the NFF secretariat yesterday said the election was a sham because the August 26 congress was only to chart a new road map for the conduct of elections into the board of the NFF .
“What is happening here is illegality and they are indirectly inviting FIFA to ban Nigeria . We are not interested in FIFA banning Nigeria but if it happens nobody should blame us because we are standing on the path of the truth.
“FIFA had said there should be no election but we should map the way forward for election which we have done. We have fixed election for Sept. 4. So anybody who is saying that he is the president of NFF is occupying the place illegally. We are not interested in using force because the law will take its course,” Chukwuemeka said.
He said the interim Committee would be assuming duty on Monday with the General-Secretary of the NFF.

NYSCCorps Members To Get NYSC Call-up Letter Online by tmx21(op): 6:21am On Aug 28, 2014
BEGINNING from the 2014 Batch ‘C’ set to be deployed November, corps members will now get their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Call-up letter online, after registering on the NYSC website.
The Director-General, NYSC, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi disclosed this when he paid a visit to the 2014 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members, at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos. Represented by Mr. Anthony Ani, a Director at the Corps Mobilization Unit, National Directorate Headquarters of the NYSC, Olawumi stated that the online registration is put in place to bring efficiency and ease for corps members.
He said: “As from the 2014 Batch ‘C’ to be deployed this November, corps members will be required to go online to register on our website, after which they can print their call-up letters. The era where a corps member who for instance lives in Lagos, but schooled in Nassarawa, will have to travel to Nassarawa to get his call-up letter, has come and gone. What this means is that when it is time to go to camp, such a corp member would be able to sit in the confines of his room to register and print his call-up letter online.
“We are here to ensure life is better for you. We are doing this to bring efficiency and ease for corps members. We believe that among other things, we will reduce the rate at which corps members get involved in accident just to go to their various schools to get their call-up letter.”
While advising the corps members, Olawumi urged them to be disciplined, resourceful, dedicated and exhibit selfless sacrifice, in their places of primary assignment, adding that the NYSC one-year mandatory service should not be seen as a voluntary or personal service, but as a national service to one’s fatherland.
He added: “Be ambassadors of your parents, the NYSC and yourself. Go out there and tell the world that Nigeria would be a better place. Most of your mates who have travelled abroad are now refugees over there, but all you need to succeed here is character and discipline.
“We rely on you to transform Nigeria. So, go into your various communities, see what is missing and be ready to impact positive change.”
Earlier, the NYSC Lagos Coordinator, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi informed the DG about all the programmes put in place to sensitise and motivate the corps members to be better persons in life, adding that the Lagos State NYSC has responded actively in collaboration with the State Government and in line with the directives of the NYSC DG, to sensitise the corps members, as well as the camp community about the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
“With all the measures put in place so far, I can assure that the NYSC Lagos Orientation camp has a very low threat to the scourge,” assured Adeyemi.
