Slyr0x:

Recently I’ve been reading a ton of questions, posts and general discussion about getting into the ‘Information Security’ game, and in my opinion at least it’s typically followed up by a fair amount of misleading information. That might be a little harsh considering I’m sure it’s good intentioned, it’s also even possible that the advice worked for them (there is no one size fits all advice) but I thought I’d lay my thoughts out here in the hope of helping a new budding hacker move forward.

I want to play sport, where should I start?
This vague, open ended and very ambiguous question is very similar to someone asking how they should go about getting into information security. The first thing to realize is there is a huge range of information security fields, and within each of those huge fields is a lifetime’s worth of learning content. Just like picking a sport there is no ‘best’, it’s simply sometimes area’s you may enjoy more than others. Off the top of my head here are some example area’s that is by no means exhaustive.

Web Application Security
Reverse Engineering
Malware Reverse Engineering
Network Security
Incident Response
Standards Compliance
Programming / Creating Tools for Others
Exploit Development
Forensics

Do I need to learn X first?

Of course you need to have a full knowledge of the OSI layer before you begin. Yes you need to read that 1000 page book on the TCP protocol. Yes you need to be proficient in 5 programming languages (at least!) before you consider hacking. Can you compile your own Linux kernel from source code? No? Don’t bother learning hacking. Actually…. all that is full of rubbish, yet it’s one of the most common responses given to people looking to learn information security. There is one requirement to becoming a decent hacker – interest. The difference between a future hacker and a script kiddie isn’t knowledge, it’s the willingness to learn.

Summary

So after a long ramble, what’s the key points?

>> A hacker will actively seek out information, not wait for others to give it to him.
>> The difference between a script kiddie and a new hacker is the desire to learn
>> You need to experiment with a wide range of information security fields to find what interests you
>> Don’t let anyone tell you that there are prerequisites for learning information security, there isn’t.
>> It’s not worth “just seeing if you can” do anything that isn’t legal, the risk vs reward makes no sense for doing so
>> With courses, wargames, capture the flags and more importantly virtual machines there is no hacking scenario that can’t be replicated legally

Have fun, sorry if it got preachy towards the end and enjoy pwning boxes! Information security is an awesome field and you’ll be learning something new every day that you’re involved in it. There is no right answer for getting into the field apart from jumping into it with both feet. Get wet, learn to tread water and stay afloat, one day you might even be able to swim a little!

Art, Graphics & Video / Photoshop Printing Issues by Tolustar(m): 7:03am On Dec 27, 2013
Hi all,

I love photoshop for my graphic works just that anytime I want to do a print of a poster/flier,
there's this issue of you have to put it in CDR format.

So my question is this: how do i convert it to coreldraw without losing a lot details

or is it a case most Naija printers dont know how to use Photoshop for printing?

Thanks

Ha ha most people are very funny, the poster has given enough reasons why you should be carefull not to become a sex addict or a drug addict, and yet some people are still making noise here, assuming, it was a christian that posted this, quoting all sort of bible verses, i would ve understood u guys plight, but this has been scientifically proven and you guys are bashing the OP,Abi una no believe this part of science again..
The funny thing about some people is THEY CAN NEVER LEARN THE EASY WAY, THEY LOVE LEARNING THE HARD WAY..so i'm sure some people won't listen to this warning.....

Thanks Birdman.

@Cbrass lol, programmers and there love for certain programming languages, it doesn't matter the language, so far you are using it to do something better in life, if not na to work harder, perhaps there is nothing bad in knowing more than 3different languages and using there languages for there main purpose.
As for me sha, i'm hoping to learn java before python, but if python seems a bit easier to java, i do it before the other.

Thanks Birdman, for your support.

There is more to C++ than it meets the eyes *sighs* I have to DIG more in my research

@birdman,what programming languages do you base on.

Peeps more suggestion pls. Any suggestion would be helpful,
Programming / Re: Software Programming by Tolustar(m): 10:56pm On Dec 22, 2013
birdman: Start by looking for open source projects using C++ to see how its actually used in practice. Once you get comfortable with the project design and aims, try submitting a few patches to the community so they can critique it and sharpen up your skills. I suspect that you will find the actual use of C++ in practice looks like incantations, not the examples you may have seen so far

Beware - C++ is not Python or one of the newer generation languages. Python, Ruby etc are powerful for developing applications. C++ is powerful for systems programming, developing frameworks and writing languages like Python. Based on your last post, you should probably pick up Python instead. Even very experienced C programmers avoid C++ and jump to Python.

Using C++ for most user applications is like trying to use a chainsaw to slice bread. you will make a mess of things. Even the experienced cats do. C++ is too much raw power for most real life app development. Python lets you concentrate on on developing a powerful app in weeks, instead of spending nights chasing memory leaks from copy constructors.

In short. Start with Python. You will probably never go back

Birdman....concerning the bolded part, I have done some research on C++,and have read a lot of people using c++ for solving real life problems, even like creatin music players, pdf reader e.t.c though, i agree with you it is also used for what you mentioned......but from the little I know on python, python is a scripting language and mainly used for WEB programming, don't you think it will be strenuous writing applications for windows in python, rather than c++ or even java

THANKS Mr Seun.....learning python is not a bad idea, but they must be a medium in putting this two programming languages together

Back to your first opinion.
I want to create a simple program that calculates the C.G.P.A of a student, right from year 1 to final year, I will I make it USER INTERACTIVE, and not the way my windows command line shows it.....
OR even creating, a program for calculating measure of central tendency(mean, median, mode, standard deviation, variance, mean deviation) in graphical interface...

Thanks in advance, all suggestions would be helpful.
