Health / Lucrative Snake Business! How Gombe State Export Over 400 Snakes To Britain Ever by Tomiwaaaa: 5:27pm On Aug 16, 2018
Authorities of the Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre, Kaltungo in Gombe state, have revealed that over 400 snakes of different varieties are being exported from the centre to Liverpool in England every month. Dr Abubakar Ballah, Officer in charge of the centre, who made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaltungo on Thursday, said the snakes exported served as raw material for the production of anti-snake venom. “The manufacturers extract the venom from the snakes to produce the drugs,” he said. He said the raw material provided for the processing of the anti-snake venom made the drugs cheaper in Nigeria when compared with countries that did not supply raw material for its production. Ballah said countries that do not supply the raw material were buying a single vial of the drug at the cost of 1,900 USD, which is equivalent to N684, 000, while the same drug in Nigeria is N35, 000. According to him, the same drug in the United States for rattle snake that undergoes the same process of production costs between N7million and 8 million, which is very expensive. He said the Centre engaged people within Kaltungo and its environs to catch the snakes and package same, at the cost of between N500 and N1, 000 per snake, depending on the size reptile. The officer in charge said the snakes were usually taken to Abuja from Kaltungo, from they are packaged and exported to England. “On arrival in England, they will undergo some screening to ensure they have not suffered because Animal Rights Organisations are on the watch; after following the process, drug production commences,” he said. NAN reports that Kaltungo town in Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe, popularly called the ‘Snake Haven’ lies within the Snake belt region of Northern Nigeria, and is known for its abundance of different species of snakes. The common species found in the area are Carpets Viper, Puff Adder and Cobra

Politics / A Closer Look At Buhari’s Ministers Who Are Vying For Guber In 2019 Elections by Tomiwaaaa: 7:55am On Aug 15, 2018
As the primaries of the political party draw closer for election of candidates for the 2019 general election, politicians and their supporters are gradually getting prepared for and they have commenced campaign to ensure that their aspirations see the light of the day. With the release of the election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it is expected that all political parties should hold their primary elections between September and October.

Among those aspiring to seek elective posts in 2019 are members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet. Some of the ministers have already declared their aspirations to be the number one citizens in their respective states, while some are still consulting with political gladiators at state and federal levels and waiting for clearance to join the governorship race. Among the ministers nurturing governorship aspirations are Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Alhassan; his Communication counterpart, Adebayo Shittu; Minister of Defence, Brig-General Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd); Minister of State for Power, Works and Housing, Engr. Suleiman Hassan and Minister of State for Transportation (Aviation), Senator Hadi Sirika. It would be recalled that on June 26, former Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State governorship election.

And with overwhelming support from the presidency and the leadership and members of his party, he was able to defeat the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the deputy governor of the state, Prof. Kolapo Olusola. With Fayemi’s victory at the Ekiti gubernatorial poll, some of his former colleagues may join the league of ministers who may became governors after resigning from the federal cabinet.

Aisha Alhassan

Senator Al-hassan, who is fondly called “Mama Taraba” is not a new comer in the governorship race. She took part in the 2015 governorship election as APC candidate in Taraba State. She lost the election to the incumbent, Governor Darius Ishaku, who contested on the platform of PDP. Alhassan was elected into the Senate in 2011 to represent Taraba North Senatorial District under the platform of PDP in the Seventh Assembly, but she later defected to the then main opposition party, APC and became the party’s gubernatorial candidate.

She was defeated in the election, but on November 7, 2015, the election petition tribunal removed Ishaku and declared Al-hassan as winner of the election. The tribunal’s verdict was later reversed by the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

A lawyer by training, Alhassan became the first female to be appointed Taraba State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice and the first woman to be appointed as Secretary FCT judicial council and later appointed the Chief Registrar of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on 17 December 2003. After her retired from civil service, she ventured into business and later politics.

During the January 2011 PDP primaries, Alhassan defeated the then incumbent Senator Manzo Anthony to emerge as the party flag bearer and defeated the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate, Rev Jolly Nyame with 92,004 votes.

She was made minister by President Buhari even when the election tribunal had already declared her Governor-elect and then waiting for the outcome of the appeal filled by Governor Ishaku. She later lost the opportunity of becoming the first female governor in Nigeria. Senator Alhassan as a serving minister caused a stir last year when she was seen in a video pledging her loyalty to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. She told the Hausa service of the BBC that even if President Buhari decides to run in 2019 presidential election, she would still support Atiku.

She has already declared for the governorship race and also wrote to President Buhari to notify him that she will be running for the gubernatorial poll on the platform of APC. There is no doubt that Senator Alhassan is still popular in Taraba and is considered the APC leader in the state with a strong structure, but many people believe that she has many hurdles to cross to become the number one citizen of Taraba State.

And of the hurdles she need to cross is defeating Governor Ishaku, who will be running for a second term. With President Buhari declaring to seek re-election and Atiku defection to PDP and declaring his presidential aspiration for 2019, Senator Alhassan will face integrity test over who to support for the presidential poll. And whoever she pitches her tent with will determine how far she will go in realizing her governorship aspiration.

The issue of religion may also be a challenge for the minister, considering that the state in the past have been governed by Christians. But irrespective of the odds against Alhassan’s gubernatorial aspiration, as an experienced politician and with necessary backing from the party at national and state levels, she might scale through to become the first female elected governor in Nigeria.

Mansur Dan-Ali

The Minister of Defence is among those warming up to take over from the Zamfara State governor and chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Abdulaziz Yari, who will bow out of office on May 29, 2019 after completion of his two terms in office. This is not the first time that Dan- Ali’s name will pump up for gubernatorial election in Zamfara State.

New Telegraph gathered from a reliable source that since his retirement from the Nigerian Army on August 30, 2013, his name has been mentioned severally as a likely contestant for the governorship seat of his state. Born on August 25, 1959 in Zamfara State, Dan-Ali, a retired Brigadier- General, attended Birnin Magaji Town Primary School from 1966 to 1972) for his elementary education and Government Secondary School, Shinkafi from 1972 to 1977) for his secondary education.

He attended Kaduna Polytechnic from 1977 to 1982 for Higher National Diploma (HND) in Photogrammetric and Surveying and obtained a Master’s degrees in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) from Bayero University Kano in 2005 and a Master’s degree in Security Studies from the Bangladesh University of Professionals in 2009. Dan Ali was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army in 1984 through the Short Service Commission at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

He retired from the Nige- rian Army on August 30, 2013. He was confirmed as a cabinet minister by the Senate in October 2015 and was appointed Minister of Defence by President Buhari in November 2015. Dan-Ali is one of the powerful members of Buhari’s Kitchen Cabinet and he also enjoys the backing of some power brokers within and outside the state to vie for the governorship seat. Therefore he may likely clinch the APC ticket in Zamfara if he is in good terms with the state governor.

Adebayo Shittu

The Minister of Communication is aspiring to succeed Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State. He had already declared his ambition and his quest had pitched him with the governor, who seems not to be favourable to the minister becoming the next occupant of the government house. Shittu’s gubernatorial aspiration has also caused division in the party as the APC structure is presently shared between him and the governor. Shittu who hails from Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State was born on March 23, 1953. He gained admission into University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State in 1974 and obtained his first degree in Law in 1978.

He ventured into politics at the age of 26year in 1979 and was elected as member of old Oyo State House of Assembly during late Bola Ige administration and later served as Commissioner for Information, Culture and Home Affairs in the Victor Omololu Olunloyo administration between October and December, 1983. After the military took over from the civilian government in 1983, Shittu retired into legal practice. He later returned to politics in the present Fourth Republic by serving as Attorney-General Commissioner for Justice in the Rashidi Ladoja government. He was also a member of the National Political Reforms Conference in 2005. He contested for Oyo State governorship election on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011 and lost the election to Governor Ajimobi.

He was a pioneer member of APC in Oyo State as a result of CPC merging with other political parties to form APC in 2014. He stepped down for Governor Ajimobi to seek re-election. Based on his relationship with President Buhari, Shittu against all odds was picked by the president from Oyo State as ministerial nominee in 2015. His appointment generated a lot of issues among the party leaders who rejected his choice but after weeks of persuasion, he scaled through, appeared before the Senate for screening and was later appointed Minister of Communication. Shittu is from Oke-Ogun, one of the zones agitating to produce Ajimobi’s successor, but he has many hurdles to cross for him to realize his aspiration.

The minister is going to face a herculean task in securing the APC gubernatorial ticket, considering the fact that he is not in total control of the party’s structures in the state. And the decision of many politicians and technocrats from his zone and other parts to contest the governorship poll may affect his chances. He is regarded as political opponent to Ajimobi within the APC as both of them presently lead different factions within the party. In fact, the minister in an interview he granted some months ago said he is going to jail Ajimobi if he becomes next Oyo State governor.

The power tussle between Ajimobi and Shittu was deepened by the APC ward, local and state congresses in the state as the minister lost the congresses to the Ajimobi’s group, who produced majority of the executives and delegates during the congresses. But irrespective of the odds against his aspiration, Shittu’s closeness to President Buhari might help him scale through the hurdles and pick the APC governorship ticket.

Suleiman Hassan

The Minister of State for Power, Works and Housing, is from Gombe State and he was appointed in 2017 to replace former Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, who resigned from the federal cabinet to take up the post of Deputy Secretary- General of the United Nations. He is believed to be one of those aspiring to succeed Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo. As a politician, he has occupied different position in the party at state and national level. He was one of the 46 noncareer ambassadorial designate the President sent for confirmation by the Senate last October.

He was the pioneer chairman of the CPC formed by President Buhari to prosecute his 2011 presidential aspirations and he has always been a great supporter of his principal and this is one of the reasons why he followed Buhari to APC when the party was formed in 2014. According to reliable sources, there is pressure on the minister to declare for governorship and barring any last minute change of mind, he is expected to take part in the party’s governorship primaries. There are two strong blocs within APC in Gombe State and the blocs are led by Hassan and former Governor Danjuma Goje, respectively. Goje produced the party’s governorship candidate in the 2015 governorship poll and for 2019 poll, Hassan’s camp is clamouring that it should be given the opportunity to produce the governor and the minister’s name is one of the names popping up.

Although the rivalry between the two groups within the party is no doubt one hurdle Hassan may face in his quest to become a govern in 2019, some political analysts believe that given the strength of the CPC bloc in the party and Hassan’s grip on the party’s structure in the state, it may not be too difficult for him to beat other aspirants to the governorship ticket of the APC. At present, Gombe State is governed by the PDP and taking over the state may be a herculean task for the minister, considering that the incumbent governor is also working hard to produce his successor.

Hadi Sirika

The Minister of State on Aviation is from Kastina State. Born on March 2, 1954, Sirika is being speculated to have governorship aspiration in 2019, but some people believe that his aspiration may be a tall order since the incumbent governor, Aminu Masari would be seeking re-election. Senator Sirika is a former pilot and ex-General Manager of Katsina State Transport Authority.

He was also a former Member House of Representative and later represented Katsina North Senatorial District in the Senate under the platform of CPC. While in the Senate, he was the Vice-Chairman of the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) Committee and was also a member of the Senate Committee on Aviation. Kastina State is the home state of President Buhari and the president without any iota of doubt would be interested in who governs the state. If Governor Masari decides to go for a second term, his aspiration will surely scuttle Sirika’s dream of becoming governor in 2019..

Crime / Senior Pastor, Gabriel Ajeaga Excommunicated For Sleeping With Female Church Mem by Tomiwaaaa: 11:42am On Aug 04, 2018
A senior pastor of the Light City Church, Egan branch, Pastor Gabriel Ajeaga, has been sacked for allegedly sleeping with female members of the church in Lagos. That was the submission of the head of the church, Pastor (Mrs.) Goodness Onyebuchi, at the court during trial.

She told the court what informed her decision to sack Pastor Ajeaga from the church; that it was over complaints of his adulterous life as the female members who were no longer safe from him advances.

The head of the church said that she had to take the decision to save the church and the members from further embarrassment and sexual harassment as she had received several complaints and confessions from members.

It was reported that Edo State-born Ajeaga got angry after he was sacked. In rage he took a knife and headed to the pulpit to stab Pastor (Mrs.) Onyebuchi and other members during a church service.

However, he was prevented from doing so and the knife was recovered from him. He was then handed over to the police at Igando Division for his unruly conduct.

It was gathered that Pastor Ajeaga did not spare even the married women in his sexcapades; to the extent that he was said to have been eyeing Mrs. Onyebuchi who was also married.

The decision by the head of the church to sack the defendant did not go down well with him as claimed to have been the one that built up the church. He maintained that it was a ploy to send him away at the time the church had grown and that was why he went to the church to cause havoc.

He was arraigned before Ejigbo Magistrates court and he pleaded not guilty. Pastor Ajeaga was granted bail but his wife who was supposed to facilitate his bail abandoned him and he remained in prison custody. The wife was said to have believed the allegation by the church, left him to his fate and refused to facilitate his bail.

It was on the adjourned date for trial that Mrs. Onyebuchi narrated before the court what transpired before the defendant was arrested and charged to court. She further stated that apart from coming to the church to attack her, that Pastor Ajeaga also bought raw acid which he had planned to pour on her; the raw acid was recovered in his house and brought to the court as exhibit.

During the cross examination, the defendant denied all the allegation made against him and asked the court for adjournment to enable him to get prepared to cross examine the complainant.

The prosecutor, Mr. G. Simon, did not oppose the motion as requested by the defendant.

Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.K.J. Layeni, adjourned till 16th August, 2018, for the continuation of the cross examination by the defendant.

Crime / NGO Founder Allegedly Sodomises Twin Sons In Lagos by Tomiwaaaa: 9:09am On Aug 03, 2018
The founder of a non-governmental organisation, Jephath Ighodaro, has been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for allegedly defiling his twin sons.

LEGITINFOBASE gathered that the 37-year-old suspect was arrested in the Aguda, Surulere area of the state by the police and some officials of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender.
A source told our correspondent that the case was reported by the suspect’s wife after the two boys, aged four, fondled her breasts in an “adult way.”
The source said the woman became alarmed when she saw the twins attempting to make love to each other, adding that when she queried them, they said their father had been doing the same thing to them.
He said, “The woman and the suspect got married over four years ago. The woman came from a family that is not well to do, while the man came from a rich family.

“The woman said throughout their marriage, the man only made love to her about six times. The woman suspected that something was wrong with him as he abandoned her sexually.
“She said she could not cry out because she was afraid. She raised the issue with the suspect’s sister who lives abroad and she dismissed it. The man’s family asked her to keep quiet. She lived with the husband in a flat in their family house.”

The source said one of the twin boys was diagnosed with a hole in the heart and was flown to India for treatment.
After a corrective surgery, the boy was said to have recovered.
“Meanwhile, before the boy went to India for the surgery, the man had left the house. When they returned from India, the man took the boys away from their mother.
“The woman did not move out of the house. After two years, the man started bringing the boys to the family house for weekends. He brought them every two weeks.
“On one of the occasions, she said the boys wanted to sleep with each other. Then at another time, they started handling her breasts in an adult way. She questioned them and they confessed that their father had been sodomising them. They also alleged that he brought men to the house, who also sodomised them,” the source added.
LEGITINFOBASE learnt that the matter was reported to the OPD, which started an investigation into it.
A source at the government agency told our correspondent that the children were taken to the Mirabel Medical Centre, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where tests were carried out on them.
The result of the tests reportedly showed that the children had forceful penetration in their anuses.
“On the day the children were brought to the OPD for interviews, they claimed that their father sodomised them that day as well. After the result of the tests from Mirabel was released, the case was sent to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command Ikeja,” the source said.
Our correspondent gathered that the Edo State indigene was arrested by policemen from the Aguda division and was transferred to the command headquarters.
A police source said the victims gesticulated how the act was performed by their father when they were interviewed by the police.
He noted that although the suspect denied the allegation, he would be arraigned on Friday (today).
The Lagos State police spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, said the suspect was in custody and would face prosecution, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, was interested in the case.
He said, “It is a case of sodomy transferred from the Aguda division. The matter was reported on July 25, 2018, by one Obot on behalf of her twins, aged four, against her husband, Jephath Ighodaro.
“The complainant alleged that her husband had been abusing their children between January 2018 and July 2018. She said she separated from him since October 2015 and that the husband took the children away from school in March 2016.
“She said when he brought them to spend weekend with her sometime in January 2018, the children fondled her breasts.
“She said when she asked them who taught them the naughty behaviour, they narrated that their father had been penetrating them through their anuses and he also asked them to suck his manhood. The medical report from Mirabel Medical Centre revealed there was penetration into the victims’ anuses.”
The Director of the OPD, Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, said the government would pursue the case to a logical end.
She said, “We find it unacceptable and shocking that a father could abuse his own children; two beautiful sons. This shows that sexual abuse is not just about the girl-child; the boy-child is also endangered.
“While we were interviewing the children, they went to the toilet about three times; we are afraid that their bladders may have been affected. We have asked that further tests be conducted on them.
“We also discovered that he has an NGO that claims to be empowering youths. And the NGO has a lot of youths and that was why we got the gender unit of the police command involved because the NGO may be a scam through which young and innocent boys are being lured. To his end, we have written the state Commissioner of Police for further investigation.

Politics / Throwback:voting APC Is Voting For Prosperity And Eradication Of Poverty Tambuwa by Tomiwaaaa: 7:30pm On Aug 02, 2018
Throwback: Voting APC is voting for prosperity and eradication of poverty-Tambuwal

Source: Vanguard

The embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday, came down hard on President Goodluck Jonathan, asking him to resign from office for running “a system that does not have the interest of the country at heart”.
Addressing supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ilorin, Kwara State, during the formal declaration of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for a second term, the Speaker warned that should the president failed to do so, Nigerian voters should revolt against him at the February presidential poll.
The Speaker had, at the APC extra-ordinary convention last week, said the party would chase out the “cabal” running the country at the poll next year.
“I call on President Jonathan to resign from office because of all the mis-governance and the untold hardship Nigerians are presently passing through,” he said. If he fails to do that it is therefore incumbent on us as a people to turn out en-masse and vote out Goodluck Ebele Jonathan come 2015. That will bring peace, progress and development of Nigeria.’’
He continued, “I am sure that (Kwara) state will provide such leadership to the extent that we shall deliver this country to the government at the centre to APC,” he said in Ilorin on Wednesday.
‘’By voting APC at the centre you will be voting for prosperity and eradication of poverty. What we are witnessing today in Nigeria is not governance, but mis-governance. We are witnessing a system that does not have the interest of the people of this country at heart.”
The Speaker described Kwara State’s political history as a rich one, saying the foundation of the political struggle and the structure laid by the late Olusola Saraki was being sustained by God.
Stating that the voting pattern known among the people of Kwara State would not be different next year, Mr. Tambuwal noted that with the support of the people, the APC would “form 100 percent of the government in the state from the local council to state Assembly and to the Government House”.
Also speaking at the event, a former governor of Lagos , Bola Tinubu, lambasted Mr. Jonathan for allowing the Boko Haram terrorists to seize parts of the nation’s territory, stating that he ought to have resigned because of the development.
He said, ‘’I saw the sea of refuges and the lies coming from Jonathan’s administration. They have exhibited failure, lack of capacity, vision, creativity; the lie of yesterday is what they repeat today and it is what they will repeat tomorrow. They are lying to you. They are lying about the security, toying about the security of this country. I don’t have time to explain the logic of their lies.’’
‘’If you control the armed forces and you are the Commander-in-Chief of the armed of the federal republic, why should any part of this country be under occupation?
“And you give us excuses every day. In any civilised country, Jonathan should have resigned. But if he will not resign he should wait for our broom we will sweep them away.’’
The APC leader, who recently returned from a medical trip abroad, asked the party members to be ready for change because the race had begun.
He said the party had endorsed Mr. Ahmed for second term because he performed well in office like his predecessor, Bukola Saraki.
Mr. Tinubu alleged that the PDP administration not only steals the people’s money on daily basis, but also refused to give them jobs.
According to him, “The thieves that daily steal your money, they have not given you any job; they cannot create jobs and they are starving states of funds to pay workers salaries. The best thing to do is to sweep them away through broom revolution. APC is a party of the masses.’’
He said this was the first time he would be on a podium with Mr. Saraki to campaign for the same party, and asked the APC faithful in the state to commence a house-to-house campaign to signal a new beginning.
He added, ‘’Now it is time to apply commonsense revolution and it is about your lives. It is about your education, your jobs and about the security of this country. We stay together since independence and we will remain together. Any affecting any section of this country affects all of us.’’
‘’I will come back. This is just the endorsement of Governor Ahmed; that he will be re-elected by the grace of God with the support of you people here and those outside there. The unemployment situation will be conquered by this administration of APC. We have the vision for the security of lives of our children.’’
On his part, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said he was a foundation member of the current political dispensation in Kwara State.
While wishing that the late Saraki were alive, Mr. Abubakar said, “We should make sure we sustain the legacy Oloye left behind by making sure that Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed is returned.”
Justifying his bid for second term, Mr. Ahmed said the state was much better than he met it.
“Today, before all of you, I make bold to say we have essentially fulfilled our covenant and in the process strengthened your faith in governance,’’ he said.
“I humbly and formally declare my intention to run for a second term in office so that I can do more for our state and its people. By the grace of God and with your mandate, we intend to accelerate the development of our state when re-elected for a second term in office.’’
Other APC leaders at the event, held at Metropolitan Square, Ilorin, were presidential hopefuls, Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso of Kano State and Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State.
Governors Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State, Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, former Governor Bukola Saraki and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, were also in attendance.

Politics / President Buhari’s Speech During His Hague Visit Revealed by Tomiwaaaa: 6:54am On Aug 02, 2018
At a time several countries, including a few African countries, were contemplating quitting the International Criminal Court (ICC); we think it was quite thoughtful of the ICC to have invited President Muhammadu Buhari to deliver the keynote address on the occasion of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Court at The Hague on July 17.

The election of a “cherished son of Nigeria,” Justice Chile Eboe-Osuji, as the President of the Court, is also a great honour on the country, for which President Buhari appropriately thanked the judges.

The court needs the support of a country like Nigeria to persuade all African countries of its evenhandedness and to counter some of the specious arguments being advanced by some noted African dictators who dread accountability. As the African Union’s Champion on Anti-Corruption, President Buhari was an excellent choice, too. He also made the most of it by appealing to the ICC to “include serious cases of corruption by state actors that severely compromise the development efforts of countries and throw citizens into greater poverty.”

The primary concern of a global court like the ICC is to hold people accountable for crimes against humanity, war crimes, crimes of genocide and aggression and, as Buhari stated in his speech, the court was inspired by the famous Nuremberg trials of Second World War criminals. The court was set up to prevent impunity and punish leaders responsible for appalling crimes and atrocities while giving hope of justice to the many, Buhari said in his short but powerful speech to the Court.

President Buhari observed that there is an alarming proliferation of serious crimes around the world, a phenomenon that has increased the Court’s relevance. Commenting on the Court’s limitation of not being able to act in countries which are not members, Buhari urged the ICC to send a strong message that would be heard by both victims and perpetrators and by so doing reinforce the demand for justice. In all cases, the court must underscore the international community’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law.

“The Rome Statute created more than a court; it created the outline for a system of justice for horrific crimes rooted first in national courts doing their job, and where they fail to do so, the ICC stepping in only as ‘the court of the last resort,’”Buhari said.

He praised the court for overcoming its initial challenges in areas of financial resources and even more gravely the threats of withdrawals of membership of the Court by some States. He commended the court for addressing those challenges in a dignified and commendable way. On the way forward, he urged the court to accept all constructive criticisms, raise greater awareness, engender trust and encourage non-members to become members. He urged all states which have not done so to “accede to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court so that it can become a universal treaty.”

Nigeria, he said, has always supported the Court and would continue to do so out of “our strong belief in the respect for the rule of law and human rights. Nigeria is preparing to conduct a general election in 2019. Contrary to the tragic incidents that characterised the 2011 general election in Nigeria which necessitated preliminary investigations by the ICC, I assure you that all hands are on deck to prevent any recurrence of such tragic incidents. We shall do everything possible to ensure that Nigeria witnesses the conduct of free, fair and peaceful elections in 2019,” the President pledged.

We commend President Buhari for his forthright speech. He struck all the right notes and Nigerians should be proud of those policy commitments.

Politics / Osun 2018 : Court Adjourns Ruling On Suit Challenging Adeleke ’ S Candidacy by Tomiwaaaa: 11:39pm On Aug 01, 2018
The Osun State High court sitting in Osogbo , has adjourned ruling on the suit challenging the candidacy of Senator Ademola Adeleke till 6 th of August 2018 for consideration of all pending applications.

Justice David Oladimeji who presided over the court on Wednesday Okayed the adjournment in respect of an oral application of Barrister Olufemi Ayandokun , the counsel to the plaintiffs ; Rasheed Olabayo and Oluwaseun Idowu .
The judge had earlier adjourned the case to give room for balance and equity , which he said was necessary for the consideration of an ex - parte application and interlocutory injunction that the court was prayed to grant against Ademola Adeleke ’s candidacy.
Rasheed Olabayo and Oluwaseun Idowu had asked the court to set aside the election that produced Ademola Adeleke as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) in the state and stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising him as such because he doesn ’t possess and provide the minimum certificate as required by Section 177 ( d) of the 1999 constitution.
The court had slated the case for definite hearing to yesterday but Barrister Olufemi , counsel to the plaintiffs , informed the court that he got instruction for the amicable and out of court settlement of the case .
He sued for adjournment of the case adding that INEC which is a major party to the suit has not been served the notice of the motion before the court and that he was on Tuesday evening served a preliminary objection which he was yet to react to by Adeleke’ s counsel .
Biriomini confirmed to have filed a preliminary objection to the suit on Tuesday evening at about 5 pm and after brief arguments consented to the request for the adjournment .
The presiding judge who at the last sitting noted that “it will be inequitable not to allow the respondent to come and show his certificate if he has any but if he is given the opportunity to present his own side of the case , the balance which is necessary for the interlocutory injunction will be adequately considered ,” adjourned the case based on shared submission of the lawyers .
“For the singular reason that you just filed preliminary objection yesterday, I will consider the adjournment . It will be unwise for the court to go ahead with the ruling ,” justice Oladimeji declared and encouraged the parties to the suit to explore settlement if they wish.

Politics / Defecting PDP Members Will Come Back On Empty Stomachs - Jonathan (Throwback) by Tomiwaaaa: 11:26pm On Aug 01, 2018
President Goodluck Jonathan,Thursday, called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to come together to build a stronger party that would regain power in future elections.

He spoke at the presiddential Villa while receiving the PDP Presidential Campaign Organization’s (PCO) report from its Director General, Ahmadu Ali.

While warning members of the party who are defecting to other parties that they would be worse off, President Jonathan noted that despite losing the presidential, the PDP still remains a formidable party.

He said though he did not consult anybody before calling General Buhari to concede defeat, the president said he did so on behalf of all members of the party.

“I still believe though we have lost presidential elections, some national assembly elections, governorship elections, especially in the north, PDP is still the dominant party. Let us not judge PDP by the result of the presidential elections.”

“Our duty is to go back and identify areas of challenges ‎so that the party will come up strong and play the roleas a very strong party. PDP is still the most organized party, is still the party that is not owned by anybody, is still the party that whatever you are you can get to any level with your competences and so on.”

“So I encourage members of our party to remain loyal to the party, not to be so disillusioned because we lost presidential election and decide to go where they think they will fill their stomachs or something. Is not easy I have been here for five years plus, you hardly satisfy even 15 perent of those who work for you.

“Those people running and those already cross-carpeting, they will come back on an empty stomach because they will touch the primary members of their party, before they get to you, they know you are coming because you are hungry, before it will get to you the food will be gone.”

While stressing that the PDP remains a formidable party, president Jonathan insinuated that even in those areas thatb “If you look at the result, the difference is just 2.5 million votes and if you look at the areas where it is perceived that PDP scored so low, PDP couldn’t have gotten those kinds of scores but the elections are over, the country first.”

“It is not as if Jonathan alone made the sacrifice it’s all of us. I made the pronouncement but some of us are paying the prize. Some people pay more prize than I do, I know how some of you are already being persecuted and the kind of situation facing you. The key thing is that we must continue to unite, as a party we must continue to work hard so that as we go into subsequent elections 2019, 2023 and so on and so forth, PDP will continue to come up strong. Even in the interest of the nation, we need PDP.” He said.
