ABUJA – President Muhammadu Buhari has statedtheir further devaluation of Naira would kill the currency, insisting that it was one decision he was not ready totake at the moment.The president said he was not also ready to inflict morehardship on the poor citizensof Nigeria who have already had doses of penury.He stressed that while export-driven economies couldbenefit from devaluation of their currencies, Naira devaluation will only result in further inflation and hardship for the poor and middle classes in Nigeria’s import-dependent economy.President Buhari who spoke on Wednesday in Nairobi, Kenya during a meeting with Nigerians resident in the county has been away on official visit.A statement by his Special Assistant on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehufrom Nairobi stated that the President Buhari said he was yet to be convinced by the proponents of devaluation that ordinary Nigerians would benefit from policy.It added that President also rejected suggestions that theCentral Bank of Nigeria, CBN should resume the sale of foreign exchange to Bureaux de Change (BDCs), saying thatthe Bureau de Change business had become a scamand a drain on the economy.“We had just 74 of the bureaux in 2005, now they have grown to about 2,800,” Buhari noted.He alleged that some bank and government officials usedsurrogates to run the BDCs and prosper at public expense by obtaining foreign exchange from government atofficial rates and selling it at much higher rates.“We will use our foreign exchange for industry, spare parts and the development ofneeded infrastructure.“We don’t have the Dollars togive to the BDCs. Let them go and get it from wherever they can, other than the Central Bank,” he said.The President also maintainedhis suspicion that about a third of petroleum subsidy payments under the previous administration was fake.“They just stamped papers and collected our foreign exchange,” he said.The President however appealed to Nigerians studyingabroad to bear with his administration as it stove to address the challenges they were facing as a result of new foreign exchange measures.He said that he was optimistic that the Nigerian economy will stabilize soon with the efficient implementation of measures and policies that have been introduced by his administration.

Two policemen attached to the OgborHill Police Division inAba, Abia State, were killed by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers when they responded to a distress call at a supermarket near Ukaegbu Junction, along Ikot Ekpene Road, Ogbor Hill.Abia State Police spokesman,DSPEzekiel Onyeke, who confirmed the incident, told Vanguard that the police teamgot a distress call from a resident that armed robbers were operating in their area.According to Onyeke, “the police team responded toa distress call, but the robberswere on their way back whenthey met thepolice team and opened fire. Two policemen were shot dead, while others sustained injuries.”He disclosed that the injured policemen were now receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital in the cityand appealed to the public to assist the police with useful information that could lead tothe arrest of the robbers.Teenager commits suicideIn another development, traders behind Ndoki Primary School, Ngwa Road, have been thrown into shock following the discovery of a corpse of a yet-to-be identified teenager, whoallegedly committed suicide in one of the open shops in the area.The situation forced many traders to close shop for fear of police arrest. Two men, who allegedly had anal sex inside a jeep, were on Tuesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. The accused – Innocent Egbuna,33, and Jide Ajayi, 21 – are being tried for a three-count charge bordering onconspiracy and act of gross indecency. Egbuna, who claimedto be asoldier, lives at No. 22, Support Regiment, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun, while Ajayi,an unemployed, is a resident of No. 28, Owoduni St., Onipanu on Ikorodu Expressway.The prosecutor, Sgt. Joseph Ajebe, told the court that theoffences were committed on Jan. 18 at Ajao Road, Ikeja. According to him, the accused were caught by an anti-crime patrol team at Ikeja. “The accused were found inside a parked Nissan Jeep with registration no. KSF 914 AC having anal sexual intercourse.“Ajayi said Egbuna accostedhim and told him to have sexwith him,promising to give substantial amount of moneyand that he will also take himto the club to have a nice time. “Ajayi agreed because he was frustrated and did not have money tofend for himself,” Ajebe said. The offences contravened Sections 136, 166and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.Section 136 providesthree years for act of gross indecency, while Section 166 prescribesa N15, 000 fine or imprisonment for three months for disorderly act. Section 409 stipulates a two-year jailterm for conspiracy. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty. Uncomfortable parents/guardians are pulling out their children/wards in their numbers from the ramshackle public primary schools,citing unspeakable infrastructure decayand neglect by the state government.Findings byNiger Delta Voiceshowed that pupils, indeed, sitdown on bare floor to be taught at Government Primary School, Oyoku Asang, due to lack of chairs, while teachers deployed to theschoolsby government typically abandon their posting.We also learned that the Government Primary School, Oyoku, has only one decrepit block of four classrooms forcing primary four and five pupils to squeeze themselvesinto one classroom.The pitiable situation has been like that since 2008 andseveral complaints by the community to the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, have not yielded positive results.Why we withdraw our childrenOne of the villagers, who identified herself as Amasi, said that the poor state of schools in the area was responsible for the low population as many parents decided to remove their children from the schools accusing government of insensitivity to the plight of the pupils in the area. She complained that pupils whose parentscould not afford the fees charged by private schools with better facilities eventually become dropouts.Clan head laments neglectAt Eweme, Ward 1 in Okisu village, the clan head, Chief Ukwa Ukwa Onoh, said: “Government has neglected this area. It is a very serioussituation that all the public schools in the whole of this area is facing the same problem of decayed and non-existent lack of infrastructure, no seats, no classroom blocks. “Government has not done anything for this area to improve the situation. The same situation you saw at Government Primary school inOyoku Asang is the same thing with the school here in Okisu.”He further said: “This is sad and we have reported to the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, many times to come to ourhelp, but as you can see, thisis simply a neglected and abandoned area.I am still appealing to government to look into our situation as soon as possible.”It’s regrettable— HeadmasterAheadmaster at one of the schools, who spoke on grounds of anonymity,said that he usually sent the pupils home whenever it rained because the roofs were leaking. “The state of this school has been like thisfor so many years and because of that teachers posted to the school do not stay. Parents are not bringingtheir children here. It is an unfortunate situation. We have been trying to draw theattention of government since2008, but you knowgovernment has so many things thatit is doing. We are hoping that one day government will remember thisarea,” he said.Gov Emmanuel is committed to schools’ upgradeCommissioner for Informationand Communication, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, said the present administration was committed to education and would continue with theconstruction and renovation of schools across the state through the Inter-ministerial Direct Labour Committee.“These are people- oriented programmes and Governor Udom Emmanuel has made it very clear thathe appreciatesthose programmes and will sustain these programmes because the programmes are in the interest of the people of Akwa IbomState. Right now, you will see so many inter ministerial jobs. We havestarted in many local government areas and the construction and reconstruction will continue,” he said.
