Education / Re: Should I Study Medicine Or Get A Job/msc And Settle Down by TONYE001(m): 11:27pm On Feb 11, 2023
Bestcreamreview:
Good morning guys, please I need honest opinions. I am a female, currently 23 years old. I studied one of the 4 year-courses at the faculty of basic medical sciences in a federal university and graduated with a strong 2:1 (4.3 CGPA). I started NYSC in June last year and I'll be done by May/June this year. Now I'm confused about what to do after service.

I've always wanted to study medicine and spending my service year in a reputable teaching hospital has increased my love for the profession. I would like to go back to school to study medicine via direct entry but my friends and relatives think it's a bad idea, some suggested I get a job after service and try to settle down (i.e get married and start a family), my parents suggested I get a Masters degree, a job and then a husband. Everyone around me thinks going back to study medicine would be a waste of time but I'm worried about feeling unfulfilled or unhappy with my decision in the future. I've read stories about women who gave up on their dreams to settle down or pursue other career options that are less stressful and time consuming and some end up regretting their decision while others say it's the best decision they ever made.

My parents are ready to support me financially if I choose the direct entry option over the one they want but they are worried I may not be able to start a family early, starting a family in my early or mid twenties is very important to them. I'm also worried about being a financial burden to them after service, currently, I have about two jobs I do in addition to NYSC, I haven't asked my parents for a kobo since I graduated, I worked at a lab for over six months before NYSC. I've tasted financial freedom and it's refreshing, I fear that I may not be able to work while in med school because it is stressful and time consuming.

What would you advise me to do? You don't have to tell me exactly what to do, just share your honest opinion about the situation. Thank you

Now is the time to pursue your dream/career ambition, not later. Now you have limited responsibilities, your parents are there for you, you are young too.

Please, apply for medicine. Aside DE, also get UTME form and prep for the exam.

If you don't, you may never feel fulfilled in life.

Not really.

If there's any rope around the man's neck, the rope was placed by the man himself.

So satisfying.

Don't care if this even truly happened or not, but the whole story is very, very satisfying.

If you know you can't stick to your spouse, don't bother about getting married. Don't do to others what you can't tolerate if done to you. She is even considerate. She had the option of filing for divorce immediately and clearing everything for her and the kids.

He's an irresponsible individual, and should have no business being a husband or a father.

What is he going to teach his children (especially his sons)?

Serves the gentleman right.

sad Even though I'm a born again Christian, I will not deceive myself like my fellow Christians rooting for Peter Obi because every sane Christian knows he can never win. Those rejoicing over this naira redesign policy are doing so because they expect a protest vote against the ruling party which in their delusion will favor Obi . The naira redesign policy is a senseless one meant to scuttle the peace atmosphere we have in the country. We patriotic Nigerian Christians reject the wicked policy. And to those dumb Obidients rejoicing over this, "Heaven wan fall no be on top one man head". Peter Obi's chances at the polls is just like the chances of a gambler who played correct scores. It will surely end in pains. We Nigerians Christians reject the candidacy of Peter Obi. sad

How about speaking for yourself? You obviously don't represent Nigerian Christians, do you?

However, turning this election into a religious affair goes to show how poorly we think over here.

Culling from.your post.....

The Lessons

We all have ambitions, very great ambitions. Maybe we should rewind our lives to the days we were very young. Some of us wanted to be pilots, astronomers, medical doctors, lawyers, engineers, and all. Some of us wanted to own great companies, massive businesses, etc. How many of us have achieved these dreams?

That's one of a thousand reasons I'm supporting Obi. He's not from my tribe but he's the hope of the common man. Those politicians many are supporting today don't care about their followers wellbeing or future. Some are following them based on tribal and/or religous sentiments. There are many alfas who are wearing rags today as a result of their bad choices. Likewise, some Christians are wallowing in poverty today because of he's from my faith/tribe and I'd support him mentality. Poverty doesn't recognise tribe or religion. Some of us were only so lucky to be recognised today else, we'd have been singing same song. I thank God.

In countries where people imbibe merits in choosing a leader, whatever you have set to become, regardless of your nationality or ethnicity, is what you'd become, except you're changing your mind. Come to lagos and see how cliques rule. They've formed a queue right from the LG to the senate. No child of a common man would be allowed to near that queue except you belong to them or someone brings you. I only know of lagos cos that's where I live, work and belong. Same applies in other states.

Only Peter Obi can break this barrier that has plagued millions of Nigeriams for ages . They called you leaders of tomorrow but looking at the mirror today, grey hair is spotted in your hair and beards. The so-called leaders have mortgaged your life forever. It's time you set yourself free. Until you're freed, you'd not realize how much damage these people have caused your life as an individual. God bless Nigeria.

This is well written!

Religion and tribalism have really messed us up. Thing is, we don't even know. How can a prisoner be freed if he doesn't know/believe that he's in a prison??

Honestly, that is the beauty of democracy. We all should make sure we are voting people we believe in, we shouldn't be forced or coerced. Please, take your time, do your studies, and make your choice. While I hope you vote for him, I really do not mind whether you do or not.

Politics shouldn't be a do-or-die affair. We can't break bonds of friendship because of politicians. Civility demands that we respect the choices of others.

Beyond politics, there is a thing or two we all can learn from Peter Obi's candidacy.

A Recap

Recall that PO was the governor of Anambra State for 8 years. During his tenure, he had all sorts of oppositions from the State House of Assembly to the common men on the street. This is not because he was a bad leader, nor was it because he didn't care about his people. You see, corruption is so deeply rooted in our society that any attempt to fight it will meet systemic and human oppositions. Civil servants and politicians benefit massively from the flaws of the Nigerian system; over the years, they have instituted defense mechanisms against anyone that may attempt to break their evil trade.

But PO didn't fail as governor. In the face of all these, he delivered his state and left clean.

The Current Situation

PO is the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. His candidacy has now spread like a wildfire. One would expect that the two political parties will prioritize each other and ignore the so-called small parties. This is hardly the case today. We're seeing a situation where both forces attack LP like it's the most frightening threat to them. Recall that this party was once tagged as "mushroom." Why would "giant parties" stoop so low to fight a mere insignificant mushroom party?

The Pathway

I remember when PO, his team, and the entire manpower of the LP started this movement. Many didn't believe that they'd make any progress. I recall when PO was touring the world, holding interactive sessions, delivering lectures, granting interviews, and all. Many said that the LP and its members should wait for the campaigns to start and that they will not match the two big parties. I recall when some wrote that in the north, no one will support PO's candidacy. I read all of these things here on Nairaland.

Let me attempt to see the situation through PO's eyes. Maybe the momentum of the two big parties compared to the LP may have troubled him. Maybe the fact that his team may not have funds in the tones of what PDP and APC may have also worried him. After all, our culture monetizes voting.

But did these worries intimidate him? I guess we all know the answer.

Action

So, what did PO, his team, and the entire LP do? Work! Nothing else. While they kept attacking him, he continued working. Reno Omokri was almost always on Twitter, throwing jabs at him. I don't recall if PO ever replied to any. He kept on working. He considers himself an applicant for a job, and he said wherever he's invited for an interview, he will be there.

Many people cried that his ambition is impossible. This, of course, did not deter him. He continued to be everywhere at the same time, online and offline. His interviews are captivating, and his knowledge of politics and economics is overwhelming. He is apart from the other candidates. With each interview, he wins new followers from all corners of Nigeria. The battle is not won yet, true, but his progress is worthy of celebration.

If I administer a questionnaire probing the reasons some of us may have failed to achieve the ambitions we created for ourselves, the reasons may not be far from finances, lack of parental support, lack of the right opportunities, etc. But are these reasons enough, really? For example, if you don't have the money to go to school, do you have the basic requirements to gain admission at least (complete WASSC and a working brain)? Have you exploited scholarship opportunities that are all over the place? If money is your problem, have you maximized the numerous money-making opportunities online? Or, do you spend all your time online seeking entertainment and being rude to others?

If your problem is the time you may have lost, does time really matter? Does it matter if you're going to school in your fifties? It really does not matter as far as your ambition lies in the four walls of that school. All you need to do is to work, just like PO. Sit down and read your books. Get off the internet and learn some skills. Go to YouTube and get some new knowledge. Go to the market and learn your desired trade. Go and start working. Escape the intimidations of your failures and lacks. Be deaf to the voices of your opposition and doubters. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is impossible as far as there is life.

Conclusion

We are all seeing how PO is turning an impossible situation into a gigantic, unbelievable miracle. Whether he wins or not, he has passed a message to you and me. What we do with this message is left to us.

Have a nice day.

Very, very impressive.

Initially, when he was touring the world, some people said he would quench when the campaign starts. See him even more active. Always with his team. Goes to show he's dedicated, and a team player.

This is the leader we need.

PO has demonstrated a lot in Nigerian politics. Anyone can actually contest. You don't need to be a crook/thief, you don't need to have all the cash, you don't need structures built on corruption. If your course is honest and legit, millions of soldiers will rise to your support without any stimulation.

Nigerian politics has been singlehandedly demystified by this man!

PO should be a role model to we young Nigerians. You see him working tirelessly against all sorts of antagonism. Same thing happened when he was the governor of his state. The state house was filled with the opposition yet he prevailed. They impeached him but he returned.

In your life, what is it that you think you can't achieve? Now, go offline, think about it, strategize, and go all out. You may never know, like PO and his team, you just may win!
