Neanderthal DNA content in west African groups like the Yoruba is enough evidence of at least some ancient light skinned ancestors. Therefore the claim by Afrocentrists and etc that the first human beings were dark skinned may not hold water. Dark skinned groups sometimes give birth to unpigmented or light skinned offsprings who are albinos while the reverse is not the case for light skinned groups and this is a strong case for the first human beings being light skinned.
A big reason why some people insist that the earliest human beings were dark skinned is because on our planet and indeed on any inhabitable planet, the most ancient civilizations are of dark skinned people because these civilizations often occur in tropical or near tropical zones where the sun is harshest. The people of those tropical or near tropical lands are bound to be dark skinned overtime even if they were not so at the beginning because their lands were the first to become free of ice or inhabitable. Africa was inhabitable before Europe, all other things being equal.

In conclusion, the color that the first human beings were is indeterminate because the fact that black people give birth to albinos give strength to the notion that the first humans were white while the fact that the most ancient civilizations are of dark skinned people give strength to the notion that the first human beings were dark.
