Politics / Boko Haram: Bring Back Our Girls Writes Chad President by Tosusa: 5:51pm On Dec 05, 2014
ABUJA – #BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, Abuja Family, has concluded arrangement to write President of Chad, H.E. President Idriss Deby, through the Embassy of Chad in Nigeria, on the alleged sponsoring of Boko Haram and release of the abducted Chibok girls, purportedly brokered by the Chadian Government.

In a statement issued by the group in Abuja and signed by the leaders of the group, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, Mrs, Hadiza Bala Usman, Mrs. Maryam Uwais and Saudatu Mahdi.

They lamented the response of the Ambassador of Chad to Nigeria, Mr. Isah Braimah, to crucial questions bordering on the status of the negotiations to release the Chibok girls, purportedly brokered by the Chadian Government, including the whereabouts of the girls and various media reports suggesting that some of the girls might actually be in Chad,

It would be recalled that on the 3rd of December, 2014, members BBOG, protested to Chadian embassy in Abuja, with banners, asking the Chadian government to explain its roles in the insurgency in the North-East and demanding a response to a media report that a close ally of the Chadian President, had been arrested by Cameroonian gendarmes, with lethal arms meant for Boko Haram.

The statement reads, “Not satisfied with the response of the Ambassador of Chad to crucial questions bordering on the status of the negotiations to release the Chibok girls, purportedly brokered by the Chadian Government, including the whereabouts of the girls and various media reports suggesting that some of the girls might actually be in Chad, the BringBackOurGirls Abuja Family, has resolved to write to the President of Chad, H.E. President Idriss Deby, through the Embassy of Chad in Nigeria, in order to ascertain responses to the sundry questions that remain unanswered.

“As ECOWAS Citizens, we rely on the provisions of the ECOWAS treaty particularly Chapter 10, Article 58: 1 which states ‘Member States undertake to work to safeguard and consolidate relations conducive to the maintenance of peace, stability and security within the region’ and Chapter 11, Article 63: 1 ‘Member States undertake to formulate, harmonise, co-ordinate and establish appropriate policies and mechanisms, for enhancement of the economic, social and cultural conditions of women. These provisions in the ECOWAS treaty strengthen our believe that our neighboring countries of Chad, Niger, Benin owe our Chibok Girls an obligation to fully collaborate with our Government in their rescue activities

“The Abuja BringBackOurGirls Family is determined to continue to mount pressure on the Nigerian Government and other relevant stakeholders to prioritise the rescue of the 219 Chibok girls, as well as all other Nigerians abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents”.

It continues,”The Abuja Family also intends to take all legitimate steps, within their capacity, to bring to an end the ongoing insurgency, which has claimed numerous lives and disrupted societal cohesion, especially in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.
“We shall not cease to mobilize our citizens to compel the FG to take adequate steps to end the ongoing insurgency, which has claimed numerous lives and disrupted societal cohesion in Nigeria, especially the North East”.
Politics / Disagreement Mars Jim Nwobodo’s Son’s Burial by Tosusa: 4:52pm On Dec 05, 2014
A bitter disagreement over a burial-site, on Friday, marred the burial of Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, the late son of a former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo.
Ifeanyichukwu, a commissioner during the administration of Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, died after a battle with cancer and his burial was scheduled for Friday.
The burial was supposed to be a major event that would attract dignitaries from all walks of life, considering Nwobodo’s antecedents.
However, even though the expected dignitaries turned out in their numbers, the burial was not able to hold as of the time of filing this report by 3:30 pm.
The development followed Nwobodo’s insistence that the late Ifeanyichukwu, who was his first son, must not be buried in his compound, a decision which was spiritedly objected to by the deceased younger brother, Chukwudi Nwobodo.
A grave meant for the internment was dug by a newly built bungalow, which Nwobodo was said to have built for that purpose after Ifeanyichukwu’s passage.
Ifeanyichukwu, like Chukwudi, was Nwobodo’s child from his estranged wife.
Nwobodo is currently living with his second wife.
Interestingly, as of the time of filing this report, Ifeanyichukwu’s corpse had not been made available for burial, even as disagreements over his final resting place continue.
Mourners were already seated in church for the burial service at St. Mathew’s Anglican Church, Amechi, Awkunanaw, Enugu, with the choir singing burial hymns, when it was discovered that the corpse was not even around.
It was gathered that Ifeanyichukwu’s siblings relocated the corpse from the mortuary to an unknown destination, in order to stop him from being buried outside their father’s compound.
Our correspondent, who was at the Nwobodo’s country home to witness the burial, observed that the youths and elders of the community opposed to the decision to bury the deceased outside his father’s compound.
A number of influential politicians, including Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, former Imo State governor, Achike Udenwa, and religious leaders, are involved in negotiations to resolve the impasse.
At the time of filing this report, the church leadership had proposed that Ifeanyichukwu would be buried in the church cemetary, which is beside Nwobodo’s compound.
Politics / PDP Suspends Bamanga Tukur For Challenging Mu’azu by Tosusa: 4:42pm On Dec 05, 2014
For daring to return to his position as the national chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, members of the National Working Committee of the party have suspended Alhaji Bamanga Tukur from the party.

Also suspended is a PDP aspirant for the House of Representatives, Aliyu Abuba Gurin.

The suspension of the two members of the party, who are from Adamawa State, is to last for one month.

Their matter has also been referred to the party’s disciplinary committee.

The NWC took this decision at its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The meeting was presided over by the embattled Acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.

But the outcome of the Wednesday meeting was made known to journalists via a statement on Thursday by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Mr. Victor Kwon.

He said the NWC took the decision because of the court case instituted against Mu’azu by the two men.

Kwon’s statement read in part, “The NWC of the PDP at its 395th meeting held yesterday (Wednesday ) December 3, 2014, reviewed recent national developments as they affect the party.

“Among others, the NWC deliberated on the court case instituted against the National Chairman of the Party, Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu, by the former National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur.

“The NWC reasoned that for instituting a claim and counter claim in suit FHC/ABJ /821/2014; Gurin vs PDP & 3 others, without first exploring and exhausting the party’s internal mechanism of redress and for attempting to stop the forthcoming National Convention to nominate the party’s Presidential candidate as well as regularise the position of the National Chairman and other members of the National Working Committee is unacceptable.

“The NWC hereby suspends Dr. Bamanga Tukur and Aliyu Abuba Gurin, for one month and refers them to the National Disciplinary Committee for infringing on section 58(1)(a)(b)(h)(l) of the PDP Constitution 2012(as amended).”

With this statement, Tukur will not be able to attend the party’s National Convention in Abuja on December 10 and 11 where the party will ratify the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2015 election.

He will also not be able to vote during the PDP governorship primary in his state, where one of his sons, is an aspirant.

But in an earlier statement, Tukur denied being the originator of the case which was aimed at stopping the party’s convention and also to oust Mu’azu.

He said he was joined in the suit filed by Gurin and that as expected of him, he filed his own counter affidavits, stating his own side of the case in relation to the case.

Tukur, in the statement issued by his Special assistant on Media, Prince Oliver Okpala, said he was a mere defendant in the case.

The statement said, “It has come to the notice of Tukur, the mis-representation of facts bothering on the case instituted against the National Chairman of the PDP and three others by a member of the party, Alhaji Aliyu Buba Gurin.

“It must be put forward in its proper legal and historical perspective that Alhaji Tukur never initiated nor filed any case against Mu’azu, contrary to reports making headlines in national dailies.

“The wrongful report and misrepresentation of facts to the effect that Tukur filed a case urging the court to oust Mu’azu out of office is not only untrue but gross distortion of facts relating to the case instituted and filed by Gurin.

“Tukur was joined in the suit as a co-defendant in the suit and as is required in law filed his own counter affidavits, stating his own side of the case in relation to the suit filed by the plaintiff, Gurin.”

He said co-defendant in a case could not by any imagination in law be deemed as a plantiff who initiated and filed a suit before a law court.

Politics / Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, Pulls Out Of Senate Race by Tosusa: 4:03pm On Dec 05, 2014
There were indications on Friday that Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, has dropped his bid to go to the Senate in 2015.
Chime, whose tenure expires in 2015, had been locked in a contest with Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, over the seat of the Enugu West Senatorial Zone.
The governor had already been screened for the Peoples Democratic Party senatorial election primaries by the party’s screening committee.
However, a few days to the primaries, reports emerged that Chime would no longer be participating in the election.
Following enquiries by our correspondent, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Chukwudi Achife, confirmed the development on Friday.
Achife confirmed to our correspondent that Chime was no longer running for Senate.
Our correspondent gathered that the development followed a peaceful agreement between Chime and Ekweremadu.
Sources in the Enugu State PDP told our correspondent that, in line with the said agreement, the governor will produce most of the party’s key candidates, including the flag bearer in the governorship election.
In exchange, Chime had to drop his senatorial bid.
It was learnt that the peace deal became imperative after an acrimonious battle for the control of the PDP in Enugu State, between Chime and Ekweremadu, threatened to undermine the party’s fortunes ahead of the 2015 elections.
The battle came to a head after the former Enugu State PDP chairman, Chief Vita Abba, resigned unexpectedly.
The party’s State Executive Committee, which is loyal to Chime, immediately appointed Chief Ifeanyi Asogwa as chairman to replace Abba, but the deputy chairman, Elder David Aja, who is a staunch Ekweremadu loyalist, protested, arguing that he should be the chairman.
Ekweremadu appeared to have handed over control of the party after the PDP National Working Committee endorsed Aja as acting chairman, giving him the powers to conduct the ward and national congresses in the state.
Although the SEC, which is loyal to Chime, insisted that the congresses did not hold, Aja, backed by Ekweremadu, forwarded names of delegates elected from the exercise to the PDP national leadership.
Following the development, both camps went to court to advance their positions, with an Abuja Federal High Court upholding the ward congresses, even as a related suit is pending before an Enugu High Court.
Before the current peace agreement came into effect, there were fears that the PDP might not be able to present candidates in 2015 as a result of the protracted legal dispute.
The chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, had at a news conference declared that the PDP would not be able to present candidates in the state.
However, the absence of major protests after the state house of assembly primaries is an indication that peace has returned to the Enugu State PDP.

The Mellons. The Kennedys. The Rockefellers. You know the names already. Now Forbes has compiled the first comprehensive ranking of the richest families in America: 185 dynasties with fortunes of at least $1 billion. They're collectively worth $1.2 trillion. Many are working at increasing their fortunes. Others are merely sleepy heirs, several generations removed from their families' heydays. Nearly all have ties to some of the most storied businesses and brands in American history, including Jack Daniel's, L.L. Bean, Getty Oil, Hallmark and Budweiser.

The wealthiest family in America, and also the world, is the Walton family, which includes the three living children of Wal-Mart Stores founder Sam Walton; the wife of his son John, who died in 2005 in a plane crash; and the two daughters of his brother James “Bud” Walton, who helped found the Arkansas retailer in 1962. They are worth $152 billion, $63 billion more than the second richest family, headed by the politically active and often controversial Koch brothers. The three richest families are worth $301 billion, one fourth of cumulative net worth of all the wealthiest families.

How To Blow $9 Billion: The Fallen Stroh Family

Unlike our flagship Forbes 400 list of America's richest and our World Billionaires ranks, which focus on individual or nuclear-family wealth, America's Richest Families includes multigenerational families of all sizes, ranging from just 2 brothers to the 3,500 members of the Du Pont clan. Families needed a combined net worth of $1 billion to make the cut. To compile this first list we looked at members of The Forbes 400, descendants of past or deceased Forbes 400 members, families behind the country's biggest private companies and dynasties that had fallen out of our ranks because the fortunes were too dispersed, for starters. (Note: We left out self-made entrepreneurs who founded their companies and already appear with their nuclear family on our Forbes 400. That includes Jack Taylor of Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Also absent are married couples like Tom & Judy Love).

175 Years Later, The Mellons Have Never Been Richer. How'd They Do It?

To value their fortunes we added up their assets, including stakes in public and private companies, real estate, art and cash, and took into account estimates of debt. For those with publicly traded holdings, we used stock prices from the close of trading on June 20, 2014. We excluded any assets irrevocably pledged to charitable foundations. In cases where a company had been sold years ago, we applied a conservative rate of appreciation for the cash, after deducting for capital gains taxes. We attempted to vet these numbers with all the families or their representatives. Some cooperated; others didn't. Think we missed a clan? E-mail readers@forbes.com, and we'll investigate.

Cargill, the son of a Scottish sea captain, started the company as a small grain-storage business in 1865 at the close of the American Civil War. He got rich as railroads expanded westward at the end of the century, turning the Great Plains into America's bread basket. Cargill's son-in-law, John MacMillan, took over the business in 1909, and Cargill remained family-run until 1995, when John's grandson Whitney MacMillan stepped down as CEO. Politics / Kebbi Deputy Gov. Loses Son In Auto Crash by Tosusa: 6:31pm On Jul 09, 2014
The Deputy Governor of Kebbi, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu, lost a son, Muazu Ibrahim Aliyu, 22, in an auto accident which occurred on Tuesday on Birnin Kebbi-Jega road.

Aliyu, who addressed newsmen at his official residence in Birnin Kebbi, described the deceased as “a very religious and obedient boy who respected all.’’

He said the deceased was a 100 level Political Science undergraduate at the newly established Federal University, Birnin Kebbi,

He added that “I will forever remember him as somebody close to me.’’

The deputy governor said that his late son died along with his friend, Mubarak Bagudo, an undergraduate of Alhikmah University in Kwara State.

“Only one of them survived the accident and is currently receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi,” he said.

Meanwhile, top government officials and personalities had been trooping to the residence of the deputy governor to sympathise and condole with the family over the death. (NAN)

Politics / Reps In Rowdy Session Over President’s Power To Deploy Soldiers by Tosusa: 6:03pm On Jul 09, 2014
Arguments arose during debates on a bill seeking to further amend the Electoral Act, No. 6 of 2010.

Their Senate counterparts had last week Thursday passed a similar bill.

The House Deputy Leader, Leo Ogor (Delta/PDP) and the Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Albert Sam Tsokwa (Taraba/PDP) insisted that the power of the President to deploy troops was backed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 8 of the Armed Forces Act.

According to Tsokwa, the Armed Forces Act particularly gave the President and a proxy, powers to deploy troops for “operational use”.

This position drew a harsh response from the House Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos/APC). Efforts by the presiding Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, to douse the situation failed as Ogor and Gbajabiamila continued to trade harsh words over the matter.

While acknowledging that the constitution allows the President to deploy the military, Gbajabiamila insisted that the powers were not “absolute”.

He stated that the President can only exercise such powers subject to such conditions as may be prescribed by an Act of the National Assembly.

The bill under debate seeks to ensure a level playing field for all participants in the electoral process. It also seeks to ensure a more transparent process of conducting elections.

Samson Osagie (Edo/APC), who supported the bill, urged the House to address abuses in the issue of substitution of candidates after primaries or in the event of death or withdrawal of a candidate.

Foreign Affairs / (usa) Edward Snowden Has Asked Russia To Extend His Asylum Stay by Tosusa: 5:48pm On Jul 09, 2014
Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has formally asked Russia to extend his asylum, which expires on July 31.

The American whistleblower faces charges in the United States for leaking details of mass government surveillance.

He arrived in Moscow on June 24 last year after a flight from Hong Kong, and was stranded in the airport for weeks with a voided passport before being granted asylum.

Snowden’s revelations last year angered some of the US’s European allies whose high-ranking officials had been targeted by the spy agency.

RT quoted Snowden lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, as saying that Snowden had requested another year of asylum. “We have submitted documents to prolong his stay in Russia,” Kucherena said Wednesday.

Moscow’s decision to give asylum to the whistleblower was strongly criticized by Washington. The US has been seeking Snowden’s extradition to face espionage charges.

Snowden has recently increased his media visibility in Russia by giving several interviews, in which he has conceded that he would like to go home.

His decision to extend his asylum came as prosecutors in Germany searched the home of a US defense ministry employee suspected of spying - the second such case in a week.

Washington has not denied allegations that the intelligence agency employee arrested earlier this month was passing secret documents to the NSA.

The relations between the US and Germany were strained last year after Snowden’s documents revealed that the NSA had been monitoring German Chancellor Angela Merkel's cellphone calls.

Sweet Potatoes
Beta-carotene, which makes these tubers orange, balances your skin's pH, helps combat dryness, and promotes cell turnover, all resulting in smoother skin.

2. Wild Salmon
The pigment that makes the fish pink, astaxanthin, is a powerful foe of free radicals, rogue molecules that damage cell membranes and DNA and cause skin to age. A study found that eating one serving every five days can prevent actinic keratoses-ugly rough patches that are precancerous.

3. Tomatoes
The fruit's red pigment, lycopene, is a potent antioxidant that shields skin from sun damage-like sunscreen, but from the inside out. To best absorb lycopene, eat tomatoes with olive oil.

4. Citrus Fruits
Vitamin C is essential to building collagen, a vital component of young-looking skin, which starts breaking down in your twenties. Citrus also contains bioflavonoids, which protect skin from UV rays and help prevent cell death.

5. Leafy Greens
Spinach, kale, and other greens contain lutein, which protects skin from sun-induced inflammation and wrinkles.

Stay Away From White Foods
Need another reason to avoid white bread, pasta, rice, and other refined grain products? They're quickly broken down into the ultimate white food: sugar. Once in the bloodstream, sugar bonds with protein and creates advanced glycation end products (aptly abbreviated AGEs), which cause collagen to become inflamed and stiff, leading to wrinkles.

Why Food Is Always Better Than a Pill
"There are so many factors in food that haven't been studied. It's very likely that these unknowns work synergistically for a bigger benefit than what you can find in a supplement." -Nicholas Perricone, dermatologist

According to dermatologist Leslie Baumann, red wine contains skin-friendly grape-seed extract and resveratrol, two powerful antioxidants. Hops in beer, it turns out, may also offer antioxidant benefits.

4 DIY Ways to Lighten Hair Naturally

By Rachel Krause, Daily Makeover

Want to go a few shades lighter this summer without hitting the salon? First things first: Step away from the Sun-In. These natural methods use ingredients that are (probably) already in your kitchen to lighten, brighten and create highlights effortlessly.

MORE: Celebs Who Should Never Go Blonde Again

Honey
Honey is the perfect lightening ingredient, because it contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, but it’s also deeply moisturizing to counteract the drying effects of lightening. Honey is, of course, super sticky and a pain to wash out of anything, let alone hair, so it’s wise to mix it with a bit of water or vinegar to make both application and removal a little easier. Coat your hair in the blend, then cover with a shower cap and leave it on overnight.

MORE: 6 Fun Hair Dye Ideas for Summer

Chamomile
Chamomile’s natural golden hue, as well as its chemical makeup, work to enhance the blonde undertones in hair. Brew a strong pot of chamomile tea and let cool. Saturate your hair (or, alternatively, the areas where you want highlights) in the tea, then hang out in the sun until it’s dry. The sun will work with the chamomile to naturally brighten. And because chamomile is so gentle on hair, you can even use it to lighten salon highlights without concerns of brassiness.

Lemon
Perhaps the most popular DIY lightening ingredient, lemon juice is full of citric acids that lift color and create subtle, sunny highlights. Combine a quarter cup of warm water with one full cup of lemon juice into a spray bottle and shake well. Lemon can be drying, so if you have dry hair, you can add a little bit of conditioner or a nourishing hair oil to the mix for added hydration. Spritz it all over hair and get comfortable in the sun, reapplying the concoction every half hour to keep the lightening ingredients potent.

Cinnamon
Dark hair is quick to turn brassy when exposed to many lighteners, even just the sun, which is why a cinnamon mask is kind of a revelation—it lifts and subtly lightens dark hair without brassiness or orange tones. Dampen your hair and distribute conditioner throughout so that the cinnamon has something to stick to. Make a paste out of cinnamon and a small amount of water and work it into your hair, being sure to coat each strand from top to bottom. Travel / Man Arrested With Knife In Shoe At Detroit Airport by Tosusa: 11:52am On Jul 08, 2014
ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say an airline passenger was arrested in Michigan after being found with a knife concealed inside the bottom lining of one of his shoes.

The Transportation Security Administration says the knife was found Sunday during security screening at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus.

The TSA says airport police took possession of the knife and arrested the passenger. His name wasn't released.

The TSA says the knife should've been placed in checked luggage.

The Associated Press left messages with TSA spokesman Michael McCarthy and airport spokesman Brian Lassaline (LASS'-uh-leen) seeking details about the passenger.

Wayne County prosecutor's office spokeswoman Maria Miller says her office would have jurisdiction if the airport police send a report. Miller says the case also could be handled by federal authorities or considered an ordinance violation.
Technology Market / Robbers Grab $36 Million Samsung Electronics In Brazil by Tosusa: 10:52am On Jul 08, 2014
SAO PAULO (AFP) – Around 20 armed robbers raided a Samsung plant in southeastern Brazil on Monday, leaving with 40,000 smartphones, laptops, tablets and other electronics worth $36 million that were loaded in seven trucks, police said.

The thieves arrived after midnight at the plant in Campinas, a city near Sao Paulo, taking guards and 200 employees hostage, a local police spokesman told AFP.

Witnesses told the G1 news website that the robbers, who had staff ID badges, were not aggressive. They ordered everyone to remove their phones’ batteries to prevent them from making calls.

They stayed at the plant for three hours and knew exactly where the most valuable merchandise was located, witnesses said.

Samsung said in a statement that nobody was injured and that the South Korea-based company was cooperating with the investigation.

Politics / Tragedy Averted As Police Uncover Plot To Bomb School In Gombe by Tosusa: 10:32am On Jul 08, 2014
KANO (AFP) – Nigerian police on Monday uncovered a plot to bomb a secondary school in the restive northeastern city of Gombe by defusing a car laden with explosives that had been abandoned there, a spokesman said.

Police bomb experts found 12 improvised explosives concealed in a car that was abandoned on the premises of the state-run Pilot secondary school, following a tip-off, Fwaje Attajiri told AFP.

“Our ordnance experts discovered 12 IEDs (improvised explosive devices) in the trunk of the car left in the vicinity of the school after we were alerted,” he said.

“The explosives had the capacity of causing maximum damage and would have caused huge casualty had they detonated in the school with a high student population,” he said.

Attajiri said an investigation had been launched to establish who was behind the foiled attack, refusing to say if Boko Haram Islamists can be blamed.

Boko Haram, which means Western education is forbidden in local Hausa, has carried out deadly attacks on schools in the volatile northeast as part of a five-year insurgency aimed at establishing an Islamic state in the north.

Gombe, which has been previously hit by Boko Haram extremists, was forced to close its schools three weeks ahead of vacations in March following fears of possible attacks by the sect.

The Islamists have killed more than 100 students in attacks on three schools in nearby Yobe state in the past year.

Authorities in Borno state, Boko Haram’s spiritual home, have shut public secondary schools and sent over 120,000 students home since March after the upsurge in Boko Haram attacks.

In April the insurgents abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in the town of Chibok in Borno state, drawing global outrage.

Health / NAFDAC Begins Enforcement For Mobile Authentication Service Nationwide - by Tosusa: 10:38am On Jul 07, 2014
National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has commenced enforcement of the deadline for implementation of the Mobile Authentication Service, MAS by pharmaceutical companies nationwide.

The enforcement operation which started last week in Abuja under the auspices of the Pharmacovigilance and Post Marketing Surveillance Directorate of NAFDAC was geared towards mopping up from circulation all anti-malarial and anti-biotic medicines that do not carry on their labels, the MAS scratch and text authentication codes introduced in 2010 by the Agency to save consumers from the menace of fake drugs.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii who is currently celebrated worldwide for introducing multi-layered anti-counterfeiting technology has vowed that there was no going back on enforcement of compliance with the MAS deadline which has previously been shifted twice in the last three years due to plea for more time by segment of the pharmaceutical industry.

Orhii said NAFDAC has the full support of the President and Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu to enforce implementation of the service in a bid to eradicate counterfeit drugs in the country.

He disclosed that firm instruction has been given to all NAFDAC offices across the country to go round various pharmaceutical outlets to enforce compliance as deadline is irreversible and sacrosanct.

”The scratch and text service (MAS) has put the power of detecting counterfeit drugs in the hands of over 100 million mobile phone users in the country,” he added.

Orhii stated that the international community is full of commendation for Nigeria for pioneering the use of cutting-edge technologies in combating counterfeit medicines.

Politics / Nigerians In U.S. Hold Rally Against Boko Haram by Tosusa: 10:20am On Jul 07, 2014
Chicago (U.S.) - Hundreds of Nigerians in Chicago in the U.S. on Saturday held a solidarity rally, demanding that the terror group, Boko Haram, unconditionally release the schoolgirls abducted in Chibok, Borno.

Over 200 girls were abducted from their school in Chibok on April 14.

The Nigerians, during the rally, also demanded greater U.S. support for the Federal Government in its war against Boko Haram.

The rally titled #unitedagainstbokoHaram:#bringbackourgirls was also organised in Atlanta, Dallas, Greenville SC, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, Windsor Canada and Belmopan Belize.

Participants at the rally carried placards with inscriptions such as “Nigeria needs support to fight terrorism’’ and “Stop Boko Haram’’.

Other placards read “Obama, please help stop Boko Haram’’ and “we love the girls, bring them home’’, among others.

Addressing the rally, the acting Chairperson of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) in the U.S., Dr Sandra Dafiaghor, said the rallies showed a united front against the terrorist organisation.

She urged the citizens and governments of the U.S., Canada, and all NIDO host countries to support Nigeria in the global war against terrorism.

“We are grieved and touched, by the abductions and recent stories of yet another abduction of about 60 women and children.

“Nigeria needs help to combat the global menace of terrorism. We are appealing to the American people and government to assist the Nigerian people stop Boko Haram and bring back our girls.

“We must rally round the Federal Government to ensure that the activities of Boko Haram are stopped,’’ Dafiaghor said.

She called for global assistance to fight terrorism in Northern Nigeria.

“We have a responsibility to rally behind the parents, people and government of Nigeria and bring the girls back home to safety,’’ the NIDO chairperson said.

“The violation of the rights of women and girls on such a scale, no matter who they are and where they are, requires the whole world to stand up and take action.’’

Dafiaghor called on all Nigerians to unite as a people to tackle all forms of terrorism in the country.

Also speaking, one of the participants, Ms Linda Oyewopo, who said she attended a school in Nigeria, said the students deserved to have the same opportunities as she did.

She said the girls were targeted for the simple reason that they went to school.

“They were exercising their right to education; they were kidnapped by the Boko Haram,’’ she said.

Boko Haram has for the first time been included on the UN list of parties or state actors who violate the rights of children in armed conflict.

This was among the findings released in the annual report of the UN Secretary General on children and armed conflict which highlights 23 conflict situations around the world.

The document highlights conflict situations where children are recruited and used, killed and maimed or become victims of sexual violence.

It documents cases of child recruitment by seven national armies and 50 armed groups fighting wars in the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Syria and 11 other countries.

The Secretary General’s Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougui says: “Boko Haram has increased attacks on schools, killing and maiming dozens of children, as well as other grave violations.’’

Zerrougui said the situation in Nigeria is one of many grave concerns.(NAN)
