Well my view, don't look at it that way... U will get the figures wrong..

Look at it from the battery up...

You have 500amp battery at 24vdc setup, right...

So let's say u have sun at full for 5hrs a day, it will take 100amp per hour to charge the battery to full. Assumption that the battery is flat.

Assume u are using morningstar ts mppt 60, u will need 2 of this, filled up to the top, for 24v each controller should have max of 1600w each.

So u need a total of 3200watts of panel, u can do the numbers from here.

So if u assume 10hrs u will only need one controller. From my little experience always think 5hrs

Like I always say, I stand to be corrected

earthrealm: has anyone come across a reliable batt tester....some bad batteries show good voltage with the basic volt meter, but fail to carry load when connected!....wud want to purchase a simple tool to test battery capacity/amp b4 purchasing any battery in the future.

my little experience, what works for me is just to load the battery with some heavy current drainer, if it survives 30mins, then u are good to go most of the times, still that's not a hundred percent guarantee, best thing to do is just buy a battery with a brand name and a date stamp, i am doing maintenance battery now.

u can buy http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AMBOI0/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

good luck

bodejohn: A word of caution on these cheap panels.

I bought 4 pieces of 100watts panels in lagos sometimes in December 2012, i could barely receive 200watts from them during peak periods. These panels are now resting in peace in my store as i write.

While I am not saying the cheap panels are bad, but the 120watt i got from here in ibadan performs at about 85% efficiency but costs around 360 naira per watt.

Very true, i know of a guy, that supplies panels with "perfect printed labels of sharp solar panels from ALABA Int", by the way the have "stand by printers", for anything you require at that market. so its worth taking the extra time to investigate your source.

But after all said, panel prices have more or less crashed.

George_D: hello akanniade,
you mean the price of original 280w suntech solar panel is now 65k in lagos?

kindly confirm,

thanks.

painful, i am a sharp fan and an importer of sharp panels, prices have really crashed this days, i use to sell sharp at N800 - N1000 per Watt, but now the prices have crashed.

George_D:

shithapuns,

you can use normal phcn cut-out fuses for your solar installation. however, the problem lies with
circuit breakers mainly due to their design and mode of operation. normal ac circuit breakers should
not be used on solar installations. always use special dc rated types so as to avoid arching and fire
outbreak.

@George_D: Correct!
@DaLover: nice one, send us snap shots of the mppt readings at very high current
thanks

hi,

is anyone in this forum using flooded batteries like the Trojan T105?

thanks

bodejohn: March was a very good month although the Sun's irradiance dropped deeply towards the end.
I had a total of 2336Ah as measured by my charge controller. An all time high harvest of 56.064kW hr. I am not resetting the charge controller but will like to relish these moments and talk of the thousands.

Happy new month folks.

nice one

Does this mean high current from the batteries might fry the controller?

yes, correct.

earthrealm: ok, thanks..whats this one for?
http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-EWFH-Single-Fuse-Holder/dp/B000KIR8M0/ref=pd_sim_sg_7

hi,
as the name implies, its a fuse holder meaning that you can buy any fuse type you require, depending on the amps you need, just nut it round the two nuts and there you go, you have a fuse, like i call it fashionable that's it. but i like it.

if you are getting it make sure you get the fuse you require.

example fuse http://www.amazon.com/Absolute-ANL100-2-Pack-Fuses-Plated/dp/B005EUTA3E/ref=pd_sim_e_2

i always stand to be corrected

thanks

earthrealm: wow this is a big loss, for us newbies venturing into the solar mmpt stuff...fear don catch me...pls some1 shud post a pic of a breaker, am about ordering my solar panels, mppt charger from amazon...would like to include the breaker..so guys pls help

just get a simple cut out, between the controller and battery u need just a mechanical disconnect, just like the oga at the top George_D pic will do.

if you want to be fashionable u can get
http://www.amazon.com/BATTERY-DISCONNECT-CUT-OFF-KILL-SWITCH/dp/B00425NBRI/ref=pd_sbs_auto_5 - this is for 12V system
http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-002843011-Series-Rating-Battery/dp/B0000AYAFE/ref=pd_sbs_auto_16 - this is for 24V system

i just added it on my wishlist on amazon.

Just as this is quite a loss that you would rather want to forget but I like to plead that you share with us some details of how this happened for our learning too.

hi,

it was a nice sunny day, just got Mustpower inverter and wanted to test it as a backup inverter to the cyber power, connected the battery, u get that large spark(to avoid this put a cut out switch, i dont like a breaker between the battery and controller, cause if the breaker is activated and the panels are still producing power, it might fry the controller, so just a cutout switch should do ) cause i do a 48vdc, i then mistakenly short the +ve and -ve of the panels when connecting to the mppt cotroller and BANG! i lost the cotroller, thats it really

thanks

earthrealm: wonder y urs is grayed out, mine is not..see the pic i added below. mail me the pics skyhigh0455 at yahoo dot com.i will help u add it.

Just to show u why its very important to put a breaker or cut of switch between ur charge controller and the battery and solar panels, I fried my Morningstar mppt 60amps just cause of my carelessness.

thanks

How do I add a pic on this forum
My "choose file" is greyed out, I can't select it
Thanks

earthrealm: could some1 post a pic of the cables...u said 6mm....is is the normal house wiring cable?...or is there special dc cable....braided or non braided?

It's me again,I would advice u do flex cables for all ur dc connections, a bit pricy compared to the regular non flex

kiretiv: hi guys am new into the solar stuff, just installed a couple but am not getting the max benefits. I got 12pcs of 280watt panels on a 60watt charge controller with 16pcs of 12v 150ah batteries but my batteries still don't get beyond 49v at the end of the day. I see in George D pix having 57v which is amazing. I want to know if my set up is having issues or another charge controller need to be added. fyi I use same charge controller as George D, and my arrays setup is 2 panels in series and 6 parallel. thanks

hi again,

please can send me the make or brand of the 280watt panels

hi,
"batteries still don't get beyond 49v at the end of the day." i am assumiing you are doing a 48v on the battries right?

since you have 12pcs of 280watt, and u are using @George_D type MPPT controller, you should have "3 modules in 4 strings" just like @bodejohn just rightly put it.

The morningstar MPPT 60 can handle 150vdc, with "3 modules in 4 strings" you voltage should be about 110vdc aprox which is less than 150vdc, good to go

like i always say, "i stand to be corrected", we still dey learn this solar thing.

hi,
sorry i have not recieved any mail, which addy did you send it to?
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by TotalGreen: 3:20pm On Mar 19, 2013
earthrealm: is it recommended to buy special cables to connect ur solar cells to the batteries...considering the distance?... i intend to install my solar panels but they are going 2 be about 35ft waya from my mppt/battery..can i just use normal ac single core cable, the separate red n black type...or do i need to buy a special cable?

also is the price of the solar panel below ok? 114k for 2units of 250w monocrystalline panels?

The cool part about mppt controllers is that u don't need really thick cables like the regular non mppt controllers, I stand to be corrected, but I always advice that a flex cable be used for ur DC connections, maybe in ur case 2-4 mm flex should sort u out.

For the. Pricing issue, I would like u to send a snap shot of the module spec, I am seeing really high wattage panels and low current being sold in nigeria.

Thanks

hi,
i am new in this forum, read some of your post and would like to contribute to this topic, i have been in renewable business for some time, i would say i have a little experience about this topic. i would like to answer some questions that might be of help.

@pdozie : please you cannot equalize sealed deep batteries, only Flooded batteries can bee equalized, flooded meaning maintenance batteries(where you can open to caps and fill in distilled water).

@bodejohn : (6 panels....2pcs of 120watts and 4 pieces of 100watts., I will be buying 4 more 120watts by the weekend.
I plan to change the whole array to 120watts and rest all the 100watts panels till I get another charge, controller.)

like to ask, those that us MPPT controllers how do you connect your panels, example i guess the for you to have sukam 3.5kva you would be running 48volt dc, how did you combine "2pcs of 120watts and 4 pieces of 100watts" on your MPPT controller.

just asking to know, cause i do not think you might be maximissing your MPPT controller on the HOT days.
