@ Plaitex and Elparaiso:
If truly Nathan had mistreated Pamela, she is not supposed to be surprised by her mum and the stranger's 'activity'.
Shocked maybe at her mother, for making out with a stranger. But my guess is that she would have been aware of her mum and Niyi's closeness.
Psychologically, its hard enough going through such at 15 years. Hmm!
I'd tell you what I had in my head when writing that bit. 1st she was shocked to see her mother making out with the stranger - quite normal you'd agree. Next she is 15 and should have a fairly good idea of the sort of emotion sexual act would produce but don't forget she has been abused from a young age. Let's say her idea of sex and any associated emotion flowing from the act has been severely distorted.

He thinks crime can be solved by being nice and sweet.

I think Unique is a bit too gentle towards rude and grumpy Pam. An average Nigerian policeman will treat her differently for her so many lies.
Ehh, I'd like to think Unique should be the Nigerian police of the future somewhere in my head. He can be fair when he wants to be, but he is not perfect @ all. I agree a typical Nigerian police would not condone such behavior but then again I've tried to infuse characteristics of our police as we know them today.

am I the only one that hates this unique and his pesky tacticshuh
Really, how you gon be hating on my protagonist? Do you want Unique to solve this case irrespective of who the killer is? Yall should be cheering him on.

Let's imagine he is not the typical Naija police, let's say he is a really good cop, won't you want him to succeed?

''No but its true; I swear I’m not lying to you. I am a small girl so how could I have done that?'' she asked stretching out her hands.

''That’s what I'd like to know. How did you do it? Did you get someone to carry out your dirty job or did you do it on your own? How did you incapacitate him that night? Did you poison him or something cos I'd sure like to know how you could have strangled and stabbed him at the same time!''

She rose from the chair and I got up too. She reminded me of a mountain rising up from the ground. I could see the muscle twitching at the side of her face and I smiled when I noticed her strong wrist. I had my killer and I knew it like I knew my name. Her face was hard and her mouth curved at the sides as she spoke quietly ''please get out of here. You cannot be normal.''

''Where is his phone?'' I asked, ‘‘what did you do with it?''

It was 3 weeks after we had officially closed the case and I was at my desk preparing for a meeting. I disliked long and boring meetings but it was a necessity. It was 12noon on a Monday and I was already fagged out.

Babatunde stopped by my desk and stretched out his hand. He had a big smile on his face like he had just won the lottery.

''Wetin nah?'' I asked. I was not willing to shake his hand just yet. I didn’t want anyone pulling a prank on me.

''Shake my hand nah abi you dey fear? Bros na you biko; only you carry Chichi, only you finish work for that case.''

I laughed and we headed off to the meeting. It was held in a small room and we were packed in like sardine. Our boss the Assistant Superintendent of Police walked in and the room fell silent.

ASP Kassim Kolawole was a big man with a bigger personality. He went on and on about how our first duty was to the public and how we should shun corrupt practises.

I was almost falling asleep until I heard my name ''… a while back I gave you a mandate to ensure crimes were properly investigated and solved. Enough of sitting on cases and sweeping them under the carpet. Many people didn’t think we could do it and I'm happy we proved them wrong. Some of you standing and staring at me didn’t believe in yourself but today the story is different. Please where is Detective Unique Adeleke and Officer Chukwunonso Okolie?''

Everyone began to clap as we stepped forward and I noticed Chichi's face was flushed with excitement. He gave us a warm handshake and continued talking ''an important case has been solved thanks to the dedication of these fine officers. I am not saying the rest of you didn’t do your own oh; ehen don’t quote me wrong. But these officers are a shining example. They not only solved a murder but were able to solve the incessant robberies in that locality as well. They were able to kill two birds with a …''

Suddenly a phone began to ring and I was annoyed. Who is that person trying to steal my thunder now? The ASP was clearly upset by the interruption ''who is that rascal?'' he thundered, ''don't you know you were coming to a meeting? Your phone should be on silent or switched off …''

He continued ranting and the officer kept apologising ''sorry sir, sorry sir, it won't happen again sir …''

Then the phone started ringing again and everyone burst out laughing ''carry that your ugbebai from here!'' ASP Kolawole shouted.

You are quite analytical with your reasoning. If you are right in this instance is another thing altogether. Nevertheless I like the way you marshal out your thoughts.

''What do you think this is - CS fu ck*ki ng I? This is not an American crime series you know!''

''Think Chichi think; where is the motive? There is no logical reason why either of them would want that man dead. He was the experienced rogue amongst them. They were looking up to him in this operation. He was the goose that laid the golden egg; the boss, the Capone. Even if they wanted him dead, it would have been after the operation. Now we know there was no operation because the last break-in was three weeks prior to that day. Besides if they wanted him dead, it had to be outside that house. It had to be far from them. Killing him in that house would have been too messy. That singular act was their undoing.''

''You have a point there but you know what this means right?'' She smiled and began to tap her biro on the table. ''Are you trying to say …''

''Yes I am Chichi; the killer came from within! Forget the broken ceiling board theory - that is a distraction from the pit of hell. The broken boards are along the corridor that leads to the bedrooms. There is no way someone would have come through that route and not woken a single person. You would have to jump from the ceiling to the floor and it's pretty high; this is no Tom Cruise Mission impossible stunt.''

Next the doors leading outside that house are iron clad. The doors were still intact; there was no damage to the handles or hinges. I inspected them myself. I repeat the murderer came from inside that house or was led in from within. It cannot be the younger kids; they are too weak to carry out such a vicious crime. They can barely strangle a goat let alone a mature man like the stranger. This was a calculated attack on an unsuspecting individual. Three stab wounds to the chest all within the same region. This was done by a vindictive woman or a scheming teenager - Ms Imade or her intelligent daughter Pamela Jubril! Perhaps it was one of them with the help of a 3rd part or maybe a mother and daughter team.''

Chichi opened her eyes wide and inhaled deeply. I could see she was beginning to sweat even though the fan was still twirling above our head.

''Let's do a recap maybe something will jump at us'' she said.

I drowned a glass of water and wiped my forehead ''are you ready?'' She nodded at me and I started speaking.

I'm curious why should he be free? I notice some readers are a bit sympathetic towards that character? He has confessed to being a robber so should it be any easier on him because he is a medical student? #confusedmuch

I brought out my pink diary and began to write. I loved writing in my diary. It is one of the best things my father ever bought me. It's pink in colour with a beautiful ballerina in front. And its best feature is the small lock at the side. It's my most treasured item, I may be careless with something's but not my diary. I used to wear the key around my neck but after it got lost, I panicked and when I finally found it, I decided to start hiding it with the diary.

I know Osas wanted something like this but he can never have it. He does not like writing anyway and I know if he ever had a diary, he will spoil it with drawing those useless cartoon characters: Ben ten, Scooby doo, Sponge Bob Square Pant et al.

Any way back to the main gist; I still feel sad about what has happened in our home. My mother went to the station yesterday and when she returned her eyes were very red. She told us Uncle Nathan was never coming out of Oko prison. Uncle Nathan had confessed that he and Niyi were responsible for the robberies in our area. She could not believe it and I remember Osas was so shocked he could not close his mouth!

Unfortunately Niyi ran away and Uncle Nathan is on his own. My mother even reminded Osas about the danger of stealing and said that's why she had to flog him the other day. I don’t think it's really good to flog a child but Osas's head is strong like coconut so maybe it was okay to flog him.

''Chichi, something is not right and I can feel it tingling in my spin.''

''You better scratch that sh*it'' she swore. ''I'm so done with this case Unique. We have not only solved a murder, but have dealt with the robbery attacks in that area. Oh my God, wait until oga hears this!''

We got to the car and stopped while I searched my pocket for the key. It was a very hot day and I could see Chichi shading her eyes with her palm. I was by the driver's door but I didn’t want to drive - I wanted to think. I whistled at her and dangled the key then she smiled at me. I tossed the key at her and she caught it in mid air.

''Good catch'' I said.

''Lazy man'' she teased.

''Drive real slow I want to think'' I replied.
