It's raining, it's pouring

I sat on the veranda and watched as the rain poured from the sky and washed the earth clean of her sins. I heard the pestle hit the mortar and the former cry out in response. I saw the palm trees sway from side to side; they were in complete awe of Mother Nature.

I heard my mother call out my name but I ignored her. I dug my feet in the sand and watched the rain tap it with such ferocity.

I wanted to dance under the rain like we used to do as children but I was no longer a child. I am 15 years and old enough to know such stupidity can lead to pneumonia.

My mother said it was the same sickness that led to the death of Uncle Emma, her elder brother who lived in the States.

But now I think of it, I am sure my mother lied about the cause of his death because Uncle Nathan said so. Uncle Nathan told me Uncle Emma's death was caused by ugiagbe (AIDS) and somehow I think it's true because mummy is always ashamed to speak of him.

I was lost in time as I watched the earth bow in majesty to the power of Mother Nature. Then the gate began to rattle and I was upset.

It was certainly not my father; my younger ones were in bed and Uncle Nathan would not be so stupid to enter this rain so who could be knocking? Of course I was the scapegoat that had to open the gate so I hated this individual already.

can't believe this story is finished. Thanks for entertaining us. Patiently waiting for the next story
I know but what more is there to tell? I'd like to think this story will get people thinking @d end. Ulo like most Nigerian women will not go anywhere. But @d end she secures herself by keeping dennis lab result (in case of incasity) LOL. Dennis knows his wife cheated. He knows the kids are not his biological children; he knows he can't have his own but he will never admit it. They both know what the other knows but they continue with their marriage of convenience.

This is a work of fiction. I don’t know of a woman who went through all Ulo's travails. However there are certain parts of this story that are true. I have taken a bit of those true experiences and mixed it up with my imagination to produce this work.

Thanks for sticking around. I'd be starting a new story in some days time. Watch this space.

Chapter 15

It was a lovely day. The sun was clothed in all its glory as more people made their way towards the newly completed house.

A small group of friends and close family members was what Dennis told her but it was a mammoth crowd that gathered around the property. Dennis was beaming from ear to ear while Ulo watched from a corner occasionally whispering to Dorcas.

It was the 'house opening ceremony' and she was strongly against this party. Dennis had laughed after she gave him several reasons why it should not take place.

He concluded by saying ''I am still not convinced my wife. Everything in this life is compromise. Let us invite just friends and close family members. At least you had your way with the job issue.''

When he made this sentence, he put his thumb and index finger together to emphasize how small this ceremony would be. However, Ulo had since lost count of the people under the huge canopy inside the house, excluding those outside.

The members of the live band were singing and jumping around. The lead singer was an elderly man who was swinging around the improvised stage. His back up dancers were sweating profusely and belting out a loud chorus. It seemed like a scene from a street carnival.

Dennis narrowed his eyes as the unspoken resounded clearly while Ulo stared at him, defiant as ever. He calmly walked out without a word. However, Dennis who was never one to give up had a change of heart and walked back almost immediately. ''I know nothing about all you just said. Your accusations are baseless and it is news to me. Give me time to think about your request.''

She said nothing in reply. This was a battle she had won already. She would give him the small respect of thinking he still had the final say although but they both knew he had lost.

Her husband still had his pride intact. He would rather die than admit he was not the father of her children. She was not a fool either; there could be implications for her as well.

She didn’t intend to use this to her advantage ever again. Besides, she said nothing and he admitted nothing. That was the purpose of the joker and it had achieved the desired result.

Dennis pushed his plate aside ''Ulo you know my stance on this issue, you can speak all the grammar you want, but I won't change my mind.''

She laughed and continued ''but I don’t need you to change your mind. I've made up my mind and I am telling you what I will do. You can't and will not stop me this time. I want my independence back, I want my sense of self worth and I want what you took from me. I am taking baby steps but by God, I will get there someday.''

Then she began sobbing in anger ''you have held me down long enough and I refuse to remain there. I didn’t leave the University as the best graduating student for nothing. I didn’t have a distinction in vain; my parents didn’t send me on those foreign trips for nothing. I won't take no for an answer this time.''

Dennis spat whatever he was chewing back into the plate and knocked it to the ground.

''Look at this woman! Look at the way you are crying, making a mountain out of a mole hill. If someone walks in now, they would think I am about to strangle you. You want the devil to use you on this fine day eh? Some women would give anything to trade places with you because there is nothing you lack. You name it: frequent trips abroad, a comfortable home, cars, cloths, jewellery- shame on you! Before you breathe, you know I give you. God has been faithful and blessed us with children and yet you refuse to bring them up?''
LiteratureRe: It Will Come To You by touchmeder(op): 9:21pm On Dec 09, 2014
Ulo was stunned, Dennis was watching her carefully from the moment she began speaking in French. He was always cautious whenever she spoke French with her sisters or mother but she never complained when he spoke to his relatives in his native language.

Ulo was so happy she didn’t notice the look on her husband's face ''I can start this minute but I'd be reasonable and say next week Monday.''

''I got the job!'' She shouted the moment she got off the phone, ''they said I can pick up my letter of employment tomorrow!''

Dennis chewed his food slowly while watching her ''you are joking right? We have spoken about this from the word go. You knew nothing would come out of it but you insisted on the interview. The children are …''

Ulo shook her head in disbelief ''I don’t believe you! Over eight years out of work, now I get one and that's all you can say? Not even congratulations to begin with. C'mon now, you want to talk about from the word go? Then let's talk about where you first met me. Yes, behind a reception desk but I was working and happily earning my peanuts. You never told me you would have issues with your wife working. You sprang that on me, the moment we got married.''
