Philosophers in the house lets ponder on this question

The problem of being has been a perennial issue in metaphysics, in attempting to solve this problem what can we regard as a being?

Fynesboi damosky12 Freemanan Toyolad and co over to you
The hardest task in philosophy,I reckon, is defining concepts.... its less hard to consistently defend an assertion against criticism if the definition of the concept is very sound.

Being is ,according to Aristotle, whatever IS....and I agree with him

So you are of the opinion that man cannot do the above without a restriction from an authority?
Why would engage in community service if you stand to gain nothing at that point??....would you not only care for your good alone while neglecting the common good?

Remember when Locke talked of "Tabular Rasa"? He said when WE give birth to a new child, his mind or consciousness is empty and clean, so any knowledge or traits that he will develop with is as a result of what he has been taught or experiencing.
From the above sir, it is obvious that if man decides to live without GOVERNMENT, he will learn the dispensation of a central authority as he grows thereby making him accustomed to it.
You made mention of Man being naturally egoistic, I agree. Darwin has postulated that man must do anything to survive, so that cannot be changed. My question is, is man's egoism not evident in today society? Has organised GOVERNMENT made man lose his sense of selfishness? If anything, it got worse.

You also speak of the dire and unbearable state of life if GOVERNMENT is absent. I respectfully differ sir. GOVERNMENT is not responsible for order. Reason is. The animal kingdom has shown that.
Reason governs the animal kingdom? a kingdom where 'might is right'? where every weak animal lives in fear of predation? where competition for prey among the stronger and faster animals is the order of the day??..hmmm..

I think you're overromanticizing human rationality. our rationality or reasoning abilities as humans differ and so egoism is more evident in some than in others. so the strong takes it all and even at that, the strong ones will also anticipate danger that could be posed by the weak and cunning ones.

A child subscribes to the dictate of his society until he can think independently...thats why we have social reformers ND critiques of societal belief systems

Using “most cases", implies their are other cases they do, in which this restrictions atimes will hamper what would have yield a positive outcome for you in the state of nature? Lockean..
I used 'most cases' cos I don't want to generalize cos I've observed that the government can order your actions in a way.But what is the nature of this order?... they are stated as your duty as a citizen of a particular state, and what is the goal of this duty? its for the promotion of the common good and a show of respect to the state e.g environmental sanitation is for own good, defending the state against external force is for your own good too and so many others.... These restrictions are what make a state organized.
EducationRe: Nairaland Philosophy Students by Toyolad(m):
Fynestboi:
For Locke, in the state of nature all men are free "to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons, as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of nature."

A society in a kind of state of nature painted by Locke I believe is better than a new society where the government dictate authoritatively.

Won't you prefer to stay in a place where you are free to do what you deem fit, without any fear than been ordered around?
The government doesn't order you in most cases, they only place restrictions on you to curb your excesses for the sake of the common good.

You need to know that your good is part of the common good and if every law made by the government is for the common good then it means that its for your own good too whether directly or indirectly...
A world without an organized government would be chaotic, brutish, nasty and poor despite human rationality.

Objection objected

Locke believes that this tate of Nature has a laws to govern it and that law is reason. Humans are by nature reasonable.
So my rational other, don't you think that man would have coordinated himself better having in mind that he has to give what he can take, hence violence and all will be reduced.
Mind you, there was a GOVERNMENT when the world wars took place which claim the lives of a reasonable population of the world, various civil wars have come and go due to the failures of Commonwealth and GOVERNMENT. So my goodman, what is the relevance of GOVERNMENT?

Permit my extreme condemnation of GOVERNMENT even though I am aware of FEW of their merits but I think it is an overrated institution JUST like organised religion...

Your opinion...
first of all, let's imagine a world without government in which the people there are only guided by natural laws not forgetting that humans are inherently egoistic in nature....despite our rationality, the egoism in us upgrades to wickedness and heartlessness and there is no government to curb our actions and make us put our burning desires under check...what do you think life in that world would be like??.....true, our government aren't doing enough BT in the words of Donald Trump "it is only a government that can control the heart of men that can boast of a building a perfect society"

Based on what I have here sir, the new society is better off than the state of nature...

On the following premises..

State of nature gives no room for acquisition of property.
Short lifespan
Fear of unknown abound.

But in a new society even if the government is tyranny. Fear of unknown will surely be limited...

Therefore juxtaposing the disadvantages of state of nature with a new society, put a new society ahead..

But if we are to compare between John Locke state of nature with a new society. Subjectively, I will retain Lockean state of nature.
why?
EducationRe: Nairaland Philosophy Students by Toyolad(m): 12:23am On Jul 20, 2015
Freemanan:
For the sake of this discourse, Democratic Monarchy will be ideal because GOVERNMENT started with it. The Society has to give all their personal right as human to a central authority, a new Commonwealth known to be a KING... He will hold the rights of the people in trust for the benefit of organised life, peace, and to avoid might is right... That is what the new GOVERNMENT is better.

So my question is, is this new society better off than the State of nature? The state of nature WHERE life is SHORT, NASTY, AND BRUTISH... Is the power vested in the King or the new GOVERNMENT not too much thereby turning him to a despot like Mussolini, Stalin, Roman Emperor's and Tsars....

Your opinion...
that's Hobbesian state of nature you are talking about there......the people in lockean's hypothetical state of nature were guided by natural laws and so life there was not nasty, brutish, poor,Short and solitary... the reason for the establishment of an organized govt is to promulgate laws, execute and enforce it so as to guarantee the security of life, liberty and property against a potential violator of the natural laws.

IS JOHN LOCKE STATE OF NATURE NOT BETTER THAN THE FORMATION OF A COMMONWEALTH/ NEW SOCIETY?
his society, I posit, is better than his idea of the state of nature because.. – the
absence of power produces
“inconveniences” and the fear of civil
tumult, and where there is no common
set of laws and impartial adjudicators,
the advantages of “perfect freedom and
equality” are offset by the worries ofh
aggression....the people in state of nature were unsure abt d future...so they had to hop out by forming a govt in which everyman shall, while obeying himself, be free of oppression nd be certain of security of life and property.

Christianity EtcRe: Your Religion Is Determined By Geography by Toyolad(m): 10:33am On May 11, 2015
JMAN05:
If there are those born in southern part of nigeria that are not xtians, what do we call that? Are you not the one who is rejecting the truth here?

From inception, was the southern part of Nigeria known to be christians? Is the core religion of an Igbo man, from the start, xtianity?

Is the core religion of Rome xtianity from inception? Why was there change? Geography? Think about the subject some more.

The religion dominant in an area someone grew up has a great effect on what religion he will eventually belong to. (This position is more reasonable. If this is what u have in mind, u should admit that ur words didn't convey ur thought ).

While the above position is true, it is not always the case. Many do grow to make a painstaking search and determine which religion to belong. I did such a search myself., though not that I explored all religions.

In an enlightened society, some think before they join a certain religion. In US for eg, there is a growth in atheism. This was not because atheism is the way of Americans, nope. In some lands, people are rejecting there idol worship and converting to xtianity.

Thus, popular religion in an area one grew is a big factor, but some and in some cases, many do break the pull.
Hey bro,You've made absolute sense here!...Critically considering these two positions,I think yours is correct!

By default or by family/cultural background,we tend to belong to the most popular religion in our geographical location but then, there's the incindence of conversion as a result of search for the truth and true religion..Geography plays a huge part in one's default religion but one's choice of religion is not totally determined by it.

I don't doubt the existence of an intelligent Creator that's why I'm still holding on to this belief...

Chance sounds silly to me...A car can't just ignite itself and starts moving, someone needs to act on it-Newton's first law said so...

There's some forces that's moving electrons around the atomic cell...telling me to close my eyes an accept that this forces came to be by chance is like telling me to believe the Christian God exists...isn't that faith?
I mean,If u believe that there 'was' an intelligent creator then it's logical to reason that He didnt create all these just for him to leave them to operate by their own laws,He probably had a reason for embarking on the d task of creation..then,do u think,he created d universe nd went to sleep without having any influence in its operations?

We are taught to accept God based on faith, and faith eliminates evidence. When were born we lacked faith in God not until when we started growing, beholding the mysteries of the world, and this teaching of faith in God. Now try to instil the state you were when your born to the now that you are, and everyone around you. We would have no idea of God. Now you get what I meant by when faith ceases to exist, God ceases to exist.

You do not require faith to know that other planets exists, you need evidence, and there are tons of evidence. You can get yourself a telescope or better still go to one of the research observatories scattered around the world ( i forgot, we in Africa do not believe in science and research, we are only interested in things of faith and the spirit).

If you want to see an electron, just visit one of the top research institutes and look through an electron microscope. There are tens of experiments to see the effects of electrons. You do not need faith to know what an electron is, what you need is evidence.
bro,i just used that as an example,bt with all these evidences and proofs,i can still choose to be skeptical abt it as long as i've nt gotten outa planet earth before,i can read another meaning to whatever is seen on the telescope

That's the reason I can't still come in terms with atheist.
As a deist,I don't believe in the gods invented by man...But I believe in a Creator who doesn't interfere in the activities of it's creation.

One question I can't always answer is why someone will build a house and abandon it. Why Did he build it in the first place when he had no intention of using it...
