Controversial Nigerian pastor, TB Joshua of The Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) has been named as the 2015 ‘Yoruba Man Of The Year’. The honour was bestowed on him by the ‘Egbe Omo Oodua Parapo’, a coalition of 35 Pan-Yoruba groups drawn from across the world. “We give this award to Pastor Joshua out of over 500 nominees screened by the Planning Committee of the Association,” Dr Akinwale Adewunmi, the Chairman of the award committee said in a statement following the group’s annual conference in United States. According to Adewunmi, Joshua has added “honour and admiration to the Yoruba nation”, especially through his diverse philanthropic activities. “We are proud that you are a Yoruba man with a global image in the annals of charity,” he stated, noting that Joshua’s charitable projects span 45 countries and aid ‘millions’ on a yearly basis, irrespective of their religion or ethnicity. “Pastor Joshua started as a poor boy,” the statement added, acknowledging the cleric’s uncanny rise to prominence from a poverty-stricken home in Ondo State, Nigeria. “He had no access to education neither did he enjoy any outstanding benefit from his society, yet he built himself. He educated himself and today stands out like a Professor in the greater University of life and living. |

The Lagos State Government has shut down 53 churches, mosques and hotels over noise pollution and environmental nuisance. Some of the worship centres were shut because they were converted from residential apartments to places of worship thereby contravening the law and constituting nuisance to other neighbours. General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Engr Rasheed Shabi, said the agency received lots of complaints from residents and neighbours about the nuisance constituted by the premises shut by the agency. “In recent times, most of the petitions kept coming back to us. It was as if we are not working at all. That was why we shut the premises,” he said. Shabi said some of the affected facilities had been served abatement notices before their eventual closure, adding that the growing rate of worship centres in the state calls for serious regulations, especially in the areas of noise pollution. He added that some of the worship centres polluting the neighbourhood with noise were usually makeshift structures that do not have government approval. “You cannot have makeshift structure and say you want to be conducting services or vigil there. Definitely, you will be disturbing your neighbours. So, the government won’t allow the use of makeshift facilities as a church or mosque. “Nobody is allowed to make noise above 55 decibel during the day in the residential area and only 45 decibel is allowed in such area at night. In the industrial areas, 90 decibel of noise is allowed during the day while the noise rate must not exceed 80 decibel at night in such areas. “The compliance level is increasing. More residents now understand the effect of noise. Some of the religious houses are also complying with the noise pollution regulations,” he stated. Shabi said that the hotels were shut for failing to conduct and submit Environmental Impact Assessment report about their premises. |

The Akwa Ibom Government has announced plans to evacuate commercial sex workers from the streets of Uyo. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Glory Edet, announced this in Uyo on Tuesday during a Town Hall Meeting with representatives of female students in tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom. Edet said the prostitutes constituted nuisance along the streets of the state capital, adding that it was not good for the image of the state. “As a ministry, we play a major role in the implementation of programmes that promote the development of women. “It is, therefore, necessary to provide orientation for young women to enable them to grow into responsible mothers”, she said. Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West has dared online news platform, SaharaReporters to register with the Corporate Affairs Commission in Nigeria, threatening that its founder, Omoyele Sowore will go to jail. Melaye’s unprofessional reaction follows an exposé by SaharaReporters that the former House of Representatives member opened a ban account with the Bank of America in the United States. “I dare Sahara to register with corporate Affairs commission. Sowore’s jail term will be longer than that of a monkey in the zoo,” Melaye wrote on Twitter. Melaye’s operation of the foreign account while he is an elected public officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a violation of the Nigerian law. The breach could cost him his seat at the Nigerian Senate if he is successfully prosecuted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal which is currently trying Senate President Bukola Saraki, a close associate of Mr. Melaye’s. According to SaharaReporters, Melaye, who once styled himself an anti-corruption activist, opened two accounts–one a current account, the other a savings account–in the name of “Daniel Din Melaye,” posing as a student. SaharaReporters learnt that, by leaving the impression of himself as a student, Senator Melaye was able to open a “CampusEdge” current account with account number 4460 1649 8396 and a regular savings account with account number 4460 1647 5966 with Bank of America in the state of Maryland. Senator Melaye obtained a bank debit card with account number ending with #8873. It is the senator’s transactions with the debit card that gave away him away as the owner of the accounts. One of Melaye’s last transactions on the account took place on December 4th as he approved payment for a transaction relating to the purchase of cosmetics from a Kremlin-based MagnitKosmetik store. Also, on September 1, Melaye approved payment to a New York-based Schweiger Dermatology. |
