University teachers said yesterday that their strike will go on - 89 days after it began. This is in spite of the intervention by Vice President Namadi Sambo in bringing the lecturers back to the negotiation table. The teachers are seeking proper funding of education and the payment of their N87 billion earned allowances. These are part of the 2009 agreement between the teachers and the government. The government has offered N30 billion for the earned allowances and made available N100billion for projects on the campuses. The lecturers rejected the offer. The strike has been on since July 1. The latest position of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the umbrella association of the teachers to go on with the strike, was made known yesterday by University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter Chairman Dr. Karo Ogbinika, in a statement. According to him, ASUU last month pulled out of the negotiation with the Federal Government, which was represented by Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam, based on the government's insincerity and non-commitment. He said the Presidency intervened, calling for another round of meetings with Vice President Namadi Sambo last week which, according to ASUU, also ended in a stalemate. The union said it was disappointed because it hoped the Presidency's intervention would dampen the tension the strike had generated; but, rather, the government was re-echoing the same stance by Suswam, which was why ASUU withdrew from the negotiation. ASUU said: "After the meeting on September 19 with the Vice-President, it is clear that the Federal Government is merely paying lip service to education in Nigeria and deceiving the public on its commitment to its transformation agenda. "The Nigerian people should not be deceived. How can there be a meaningful transformation when the education sector is neglected and gradually taken over by private entrepreneurs, including government functionaries who are busy bulding private universities with stolen funds in and outside Nigeria. Can these universities be truly called private? "ASUU is assuring Nigerians that it will not back out in its struggle to ensure that the government is made to do what is right in the education sector. This is a commitment that all members of the union have vowed to pursue to its logical conclusion." The union said it had reported back to its various zones many of which still insisted the strike must continue." Hundreds of students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) yesterday gave the Federal Government a one week ultimatum to meet all the demands of ASUU or face the wrath of students. The students, who staged a peaceful protest, urged the Federal Government to respect and implement the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement. Addressing the protesters at the BUK gate, the university's Students Union President, Sani Ibrahim, said they were forced to stage the protest, "because we are tired of staying at home". "Our mates in other countries are in school; why should the case of Nigerian students be different?" "As part of the struggle to fight for our right is being pursued, I will like to salute our students for their patience while receiving the negative consequences of bad governance. We believe that the delay in resuming lectures in our universities is not only lamentable but also devastating. We believe even more strongly that now is the time to let our leaders know that enough is enough and we shall wake up and say 'no' to injustice being meted out to Nigerian students. "We also call on the government to review the annual budget for the education sector from eight per cent to 26 per cent, so as to ensure adequate rehabilitation of infrastructure in our universities, including hostels, laboratories, potable water and constant supply of electricity. "We are calling on ASUU to give government more opportunity to dialogue so as to quickly resolve the differences in the best interest of Nigerian students. We are giving ASUU and the Federal Government one week to sort things out and resume lectures; otherwise Nigerian students will look for other alternatives to fight for our right. Education is our right and no one should take it away from us," Ibrahim noted. But for the intervention of the police, who pleaded with the protesting students, they would have taken to the streets. ASUU members at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) insisted yesterday that they would not return to work, until the Federal Government resolves the issues. This was contrary to a report that the management was already consulting with the striking lecturers on the need to call back the students by end of this month. The union urged Vice-Chancellor Prof. Femi Mimiko to toe the path of rule of law and refrain from any desperate act of self-help in his attempt to reopen the university. In a statement by their counsel, Mr. Charles Titiloye, the union noted with great concern the threat by the vice-chancellor to re-open the University for academic activities, despite of the strike. The union warned that it would not allow contract lecturers or newly employed graduate fellows to be used to resume teaching in the school. |
The controversy over the state of the nation's economy continued on Thursday with the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party known as the New PDP accusing the Goodluck Jonathan administration of running the economy aground. It said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, on Thursday, that officially-induced oil theft, dwindling returns from oil and massive looting of the treasury, were pointers that Nigeria was on the brink of economic collapse. But the Presidency and the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP advised Nigerians to ignore the claim because the economy was doing well. But the New PDP argued that despite the claims by the Jonathan administration that the economy was on a good footing, there were overwhelming facts that it (economy) was "now comatose." According to the faction, one of the facts is the inability of the Federal Government to pay states their share of the Federal Allocation since July. It put the total sum owed the states at N336bn. The statement, which was attributed to the National Chairman of the New PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, reads in part, "As of today (Thursday), the states are being owed N336bn, with the N75bn being the balance of the July 2013 arrears, N121bn from June augmentation and over N90bn as July augmentation. "The implication of this unfortunate development is that the 36 states have become impoverished and unable to meet up with their basic obligations, including the payment of workers' monthly salaries, which many of the states have been unable to do due to lack of funds. "Chairman of the New PDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, has therefore unequivocally condemned the rape of the country's economy by the Goodluck Jonathan Administration." The PDP faction, which also put the percentage of unemployment in the country at about 80 per cent, said because of the arrears, most states had not been able to meet their obligations to their contractors. It pointed out that the inability of states to pay their workers was capable of adding to the social, economic and political problems facing the nation. This, the group said, was a grave danger to the country as youth and labour restiveness could erupt. The PDP faction added, "Nigerians should expect further worsening of the unemployment situation and the loss of jobs, which are inevitable should the Federal Government continue with the present shoddy management of the economy which leaves much room for abuse. While asking where the money accruing to the nation had gone to, the New PDP said the Central Bank of Nigeria had revealed that the country earned N1.05tn in July. It therefore wondered why the Ministry of Finance had not been able to pay states their due statutory allocations. " The truth is that Nigeria is broke. Worse days are ahead under this inept and visionless administration. "It is unacceptable for Nigerians to be subjected to this grand level of suffering even when their country is one of the world's leading oil producers," the New PDP stated. But the Jonathan administration, through the Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Dr.Samuel Ortom, said the economy was doing well. Ortom, who was at the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja, where he briefed members of the National Working Committee of the party on the activities of his ministry, said, "the Nigerian economy is doing well and there in no need for anyone to raise the false alarm." He added, "I am not surprised about the antics of some people to run the administration of President Jonathan down in the name that the economy is not doing well. It is part of the grand design to run government down, especially now that elections are around the corner. "The economy is doing well. It is the gimmick of our detractors. By every standard, we can beat our chest down and say that the economy is doing well." He explained that the fact that Foreign Direct Investment had gone down from $8.1bn in 2011 to $7.1bn in 2012, did not indicate that the economy was in a bad shape. The minister added that the FDI of $8.1bn investment inflow into Nigeria was the highest in Africa, saying that the FDI in the next three years stood at N3.9tn , while the total investment commitment in the next three years is N2.7tn. He said the expectation by 2015 was that Nigeria would be among the first five countries in Africa and 34 globally competitive ranking by 2015. Ortom also said that cement importation reduced by 51 percent between 2011 and 2012. Also, the PDP under the leadership of Tukur, asked Nigerians not to take the Baraje faction seriously. Its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Jalo, told our correspondent on the telephone, that the party and the Presidency were not against constructive criticism. He said, "If that allegation is made by economists, we would say they are telling the truth. But we all know that an angry man may not be able to reason well. "That is why they are making sweeping allegations without anything to back them up. It is a blanket statement. "We cherish criticism, but such criticism must be constructive and must be sensible. Let them come forward with evidence and we would debate them." |
Benue State governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam, yesterday directed the management of the Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi to reopen the institution and announced the decisions of the state government to suspend payment of salaries to lecturers and sack lecturers that failed to comply. The BSU lecturers joined their counterparts across the country to observe the nationwide strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which commenced since June, 2013. They have refused to go back to work despite several pleas by the governor. However, Suswam said that members of the union in the BSU have deliberately refused to call off the strike even as the state government has made several appeals for the lecturers to consider the interest of the students. He directed the management of the university to reopen the institution with immediate effect or risk being sacked. Suswam made this declaration at Government House, Makurdi during an urgent meeting with the management of the university led by the vice chancellor, Prof. Charity Angya. The VC was represented by the deputy vice chancellor, administration, Prof Nicholas Ada. According to Suswam, "it is important that you as management come because you have refused to reopen the university. I am going to call the Governing Council and insist that they open the university but the first thing I am going to do is that you will not have your salaries paid beginning from this month and any staff who refuses to come back to work would have his or her appointment terminated and nobody is going to collect salary arrears. And so I needed you people to know before you hear it announced on the radio". "I am also aware that there was a court case that was instituted against the university by the state government over strike and we are going to take that case up and make you face it because we have completely run out of patience and there is no basis while the children will continue to be on strike," Suswam said. |
