ADDRESSING THE URGENT NEED FOR AN UPWARD REVIEW IN NYSC ALLOWANCE AMIDST NIGERIA'S RISING COST OF LIVING The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a crucial program in Nigeria that fosters unity, national integration, and provides fresh graduates with the opportunity to contribute to the development of the country. However, the stipend paid to Corp members has remained stagnant despite the increments of salaries of workers in other sectors, thus failing to keep up with the relentless rise in the cost of living. This article aims at highlighting the pressing need for an upward review in the allowance paid to Corp members in the NYSC scheme, in order to align with the escalating cost of living in Nigeria. The Cost of Living Challenge The cost of living in Nigeria has been on a steady increase over the years, resulting from various factors including inflation, fluctuating exchange rates, and economic instability. This has led to a significant disparity between the current NYSC allowance and the actual expenses incurred by Corp members. Many young graduates struggle to cope during their service year, finding it challenging to afford basic necessities such as accommodation, transportation, and food. Inadequacy of Current Allowance The current monthly allowance for NYSC Corp members is widely acknowledged as inadequate to cater to their basic needs, especially in urban areas where the cost of living is considerably higher. With the current allowance barely covering transportation costs and sustenance, many Corp members resort to taking on part-time jobs to make ends meet. This not only detracts from the original purpose of the NYSC scheme but also adds undue stress to an already demanding service year. Impact on Corp Members' Well-being The financial strain on Corp members can negatively impact their physical and mental well-being. The stress of trying to manage with inadequate funds may lead to decreased focus on their primary service responsibilities and hinder their ability to fully participate in community development projects. In addition, the financial pressures can contribute to feelings of anxiety, frustration, and demotivation among Corp members. Attracting and Retaining Talent The NYSC program aims to groom well-rounded individuals who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the nation's progress. However, the inability to meet basic needs can discourage many graduates from participating in the scheme altogether. An upward review in the allowance would make the program more attractive, potentially increasing participation and retaining a diverse pool of talented young individuals. The Way Forward To address the glaring inadequacy of the current allowance, it is imperative for the Nigerian government to conduct a thorough review and adjustment of the stipend paid to Corp members. The new allowance should be calculated based on a comprehensive assessment of the current cost of living, taking into consideration variables such as accommodation, transportation, food, and other essentials. Regular reviews should also be scheduled to ensure that the allowance remains in line with the evolving economic landscape. Conclusion The NYSC scheme holds immense value in fostering national unity and shaping the character of Nigerian youth. However, the program's effectiveness is hampered by the insufficient allowance paid to Corp members, which fails to address the rising cost of living. An upward review in the allowance is not only a practical necessity but also a symbolic gesture of the government's commitment to the well-being and development of its young citizens. It is time to prioritize the financial stability of Corp members during their service year, ensuring that they can fully engage in their responsibilities without undue financial strain. The BBnaija S6 #Shineyoureyes has taken a new twist as some old housemates (Niyi, Yerin and Beatrice) have been evicted. In the same vein, new House mates have been brought in- Michael, Queen and Jumoke(JMK). Nigerians have decided to dig up an old post from one of the new House mate, JMK in which she claimed if not for twitter, she wouldn't have heard of Bbn and she equally said, Nigerian reality TV shows do not interest her. Let's see how things unfold for her. Me I'm rooting for Queen Atang Sha.

Writing this article to congratulate Mr.Atiku on his success in the primaries. The primaries is just one step that has been taken by him, there are many others to be taken. Nigeria is 58 and it appears we have been going One step forward and Five steps backwards. Our problems are too many to mention. Poor transportation network, Electricity, Housing, Education, Employment etc. I feel 2019 presents a new era for Nigeria. Things need to be done differently. We lag behind many countries of the world. We are called giant of Africa but our developmental pace is worst than thant of an injured snail. Infrastructural development could help paint a better picture of our dear nation. From roads to hospitals to schools ( that are always painted with yellow as if it's a national color), we are way behind, that even on the internet, a tarnished image of our nation is present.
