Preparations are already in top gear ahead of the maiden edition of the E-Revenue Sustainability Conference, an annual forum organized by Intermarc Consulting Limited and other stakeholders in the financial services sector of the economy.

According to the organizers, the conference will proffer strategies and tactics to grow revenues from existing and new IGR sources within the federation, while also exploring effective ways of collecting revenues electronically for the nation’s economic growth.

In a chat with newsmen in Lago​s​, the CEO, Intermarc Consulting Limited, Mr. Adeyinka Adeyemi noted that if information communication technology (ICT) is deployed to government revenue collection and administration, the internally generated revenues (IGRs) will displace crude oil.

Adeyemi lamented that most state governments generate 15 per cent of their revenue and depend on federal allocation for sustenance, arguing that this is no longer sustainable. Government, he said, needs to focus on a planned strategy for a sharp turn-around from oil dependence to self-sustainability.

“The challenge with IGR however is how government will design and develop sustainable strategies to grow revenue as well as effective ways to collect these revenues sustainably across the federation. This can be achieved on the platform of Federal Government’s independent electronic revenue collection scheme throughout the country by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“This new scheme under the treasury single account (TSA) initiative is aimed at deploying the automate platforms and electronic payment channels to handle revenue collection for local and state governments, MDAs straight to into government coffers, he said.

According to him, the conference scheduled for between May 10 and 11, 2016, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, with the theme; ‘Developing a National Revenue Sustainability Framework’ will provide opportunity for federal and state ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) as well as local authorities to fashion out strategies to grow revenues from existing internally generated revenue (IGR) sources and explore electronic method of collection.

He further said that top stakeholders ​ in the financial sector​ led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun have been penciled down to deliver lecture on the gains of exploring E-Revenue collection.

The Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun will lead other top stakeholders to deliver a lecture on ‘Developing a National Revenue Sustainability Framework’ at the E-Revenue Sustainability Conference 2016, an annual forum organized by Intermarc Consulting Limited.

According to the organizers, the conference billed to hold from May 10 – 11 at the Shehu Musa Yar’Ádua Centre, Abuja will proffer strategies and tactics to grow revenues from existing and new IGR sources within the federation, while also exploring effective ways of collecting revenues electronically for the nation’s economic growth.

Other industry captains expected to speak at the event which will attract over 1000 delegates from all over the nation; both private and public sectors include the Accountant General of the federation, Ahmed Idris, Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Mr. Babatunde Fowler, Executive Secretary, Joint Tax Board, Mr. M. “The impact of this negative development is felt in the area of revenue allocation to the various tiers of Government. The need for Federal, State and local governments to generate adequate revenue from internal sources has therefore become a matter of extreme urgency and importance.”

“This need underscores the eagerness on the part of governments to sustain the traditional areas of taxation through Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) as well as look for new sources of revenue in an innovative manner in order to grow revenue base and reduce loss. Taxation plays strategic role in the survival and development of a Nigeria Nation.” He noted.

Dangote Cement Plc invested over $5bn to build 44 million tonnes per annum cement factories in eight African countries in 2015, the firm said in its 2015 annual report.

These countries are: Nigeria, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Ghana.

The Chairman, Dangote Cement, Aliko Dangote, was quoted in the report as saying that the business model of the company was based on rapid expansion at a time when the world’s major cement companies were occupied with debt reduction, merger or integration.
He said within some months of opening factories in Senegal, Ethiopia and South Africa, the company had achieved rapid gains in market share despite the presence of strong incumbents.

Dangote said, “To put this rapid success into context, we have invested more than $5bn to build this capacity, but at the end of 2015, we had just $1bn of net debt.”

Meanwhile, as returns from African projects lifted the earnings and profits of the company, its shareholders have endorsed the pan African expansion of the company, urging the management to make a foray into other countries in a bid to make the company the foremost cement manufacturer in the world.

FMBN is saddled with the responsibility of supplying the mortgage and housing markets with sustainable liquidity for the advancement of home ownership among Nigerians that is anchored on mortgage financing.
The succession battle came to limelight immediately after the disengagement of immediate past Managing Director of FMBN, Mr Gimba Yau’ Kumo by President Muhammadu Buhari. Kumo who was re-appointed by immediate past President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on January 2015 having spent 4 years in his first tenure, was sacked alongside 25 Head of Federal Parastatals and Agencies before the expiration of their tenure.

Investigations revealed that Kumo’s handover was enmeshed in crisis as the three Executive Directors in the Board of FMBN were political appointees and not career civil servants.

Gimba however handed over to Mr Ayobola Oluwafemi Abiola, the executive Director, policy and strategy; which led to conflict of seniority among the three executive Directors.

Following this, The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in its letter to FMBN approved Mr. Richard John Esin as the Acting Managing Director pending the appointment of a substantive MD.

More revelations of Nigerians operating companies in the offshore tax haven Panama island have been made. Expectedly top notch businessmen are alleged to have been named among those who are involved in the shell companies. A recent addition to the name is Wale Tinubu, Tokunboh Sijuwade, Sayyu Dantata among others. Reports indicate that Tinubu’s name is not surprising as he had previously been linked with alleged fraudulent companies in Maritius used to siphon funds from Nigeria.

It raised eyebrow therefore when Last October, Oando Plc, made history for the wrong reason when it announced a loss of N184 billion in the 2014 financial year.

The loss was the biggest ever recorded by any Nigerian company according to experts.

While its shareholders bore the brunt of the bleak financial year, the company’s Group Chief Executive, Wale Tinubu, and his deputy, Omamofe Boyo, might be doing just fine as they had for years incorporated and operated a cluster of shell companies in notorious offshore jurisdictions.

Tinubu seems to be making so good a return from his shell companies that in 2008, he agreed to pay a front as much as $20,000 monthly to manage all of his offshore transactions.

Details of the offshore assets of the two top bosses at Oando Plc were among the revelations contained in the leaked massive internal data belonging to Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca.

The Senate Committee on Finance, on Thursday kicked against the appropriation of the sum of N1.6 billion by the Federal Inland Revenue Service FIRS as welfare package for its intending retirees in 2016.

The amount, according to FIRS, is meant for its annual event of recognising its retired staff explaining that the event could not be held for two years due to lack of fund.

The committee also frowned at the N700 million budget for medical bills of staff just as well as appropriation of over N16 billion earmarked as salaries of staff yet to be recruited. Speaking during a budget defence session with the FIRS, Chairman of the committee, John Enoh said the welfare package was quite outrageous as the agency had never spent such an amount before.

To this end, he asked the FIRS to present the total breakdown of the proposed expenditure as well submit details of what it spent last on its retired staff. “We will need a presentation that explains some particular cases of variation,” he said. His action followed observation by members of the committee that the budget for the retired staff welfare was unreasonable since the agency never spent such huge amount for that purpose.

Hundreds of millions of pounds of British foreign aid given to Nigeria to help combat Boko Haram terrorists is instead being used to fund a witch-hunt against opposition politicians, it is being claimed.

Britain has committed to spending £860 million in foreign aid to Nigeria, which now boasts Africa’s largest economy, to help support the country’s efforts to crush Boko Haram terror group, which has been responsible for a spate of outrages, including the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls.

But Western officials are now raising concerns that the government of the country’s recently elected leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, is misusing the funds to persecute political opponents.

A Federal High Court sitting at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, today, Monday, April 11, 2016, ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) to arraign former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu on May 16.

Presiding judge, Justice ‎Anwuli Chikere gave the ruling to re-arraign Mr. Kalu after she was furnished with judgment of the Apex, which ‎had on March 18, held that the defendant has a criminal case to answer.

Recall Mr. Kalu was facing a 107-count corruption charge, but is set to answer an amended 112-count charge dated ‎February 11, 2008.
Mr. Kalu will be arraigned alongside his firm Slok Nigeria Limited and his co-accused Mr. Udeh Jones Udeogu.

As a contractor and Managing Director of Al-CLEMENT ENTERPRISES, an indigenous Company which is involved in contracting services and general merchandise, Prince Ugochukwu entered into contracts with the Imo State Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB) and the Imo State Primary Education Board for the Production of student identity cards on the 10th of March 1997, at a value of over N16 million Naira.

In order to ensure smooth and effective execution of the contract, the businessman deployed his two bank accounts with DIAMOND BANK, for the purpose of receiving various sums of money for the project.

However, in the course of executing the ID card contract, the then Branch Manager of the Bank in Owerri, at their No 6 ITEM Street Ikenegbu Layout Office, Reverend Festus Azara allegedly introduced (for official purpose) the then Special Assistant to the Imo State Administrator (Governor), Reverend Ugochukwu Unachukwu to Prince Amobi Ugochukwu.

In his Petition to the EFCC, Prnce Amobi Ugochukwu made a damning revelation. Hear him, “DIAMOND BANK cajoled and forced me into making the said Reverend Ugochukwu Unachukwu a co-signatory to my Company’s account, where the money for the execution of the contract was lodged into, with a fictitious name – “Uzoma Onuoha”. When I protested why Reverend Ugochukwu Unachukwu should bear a fictitious name to be a co-signatory in my company’s account, I was told that it was for security reasons and that DIAMOND BANK had been doing so for many officials of State Governments in Nigeria.’’

Corps member Okonta Dumebi Samuel, who was murdered by unknown gunmen during the recent re-run elections in Rivers State, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Illah in Delta State.

Only recently came the news of how former Nexim Bank Manaiging Director, Mr. Robert Orya was facing trouble over alleged financial malpractices including the withdrawal of over One Billion Naira and allegedly paid same to the Peoples Democratic Party to aid its presidential campaign.
