The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics ( ASUP ) is set to embark on an indefinite strike action with effect from Monday, November 13, 2017 to press for the implementation of its agreement with government, accusing government of treating polytechnic education with disdain and levity. Rising from the emergency meeting of its National Executive Council, ASUP said it has no choice than to embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of its earlier 21 days ultimatum, adding that the conciliatory meeting organised by the Federal Ministry of Labour failed to produce positive result because the Ministry of Education was not interested in resolving the dispute. National President of ASUP, Comrade Usman Y. Dutse also accused the government of using endless verification exercises to delay the payment of entitlements of members of the union, adding that while the union is not against government carrying out verification exercises, it should not endless and the exercise should not be used to denied workers their rights. He said that despite the 21 days notice given to the government, they did not consider it necessary to address their demands for an improved funding of polytechnic education in the country. Dutse said “Our union is therefore constrained to lament again that our sector is on the verge of collapse and needs all the emergency attention it urgently deserves. Until now, it should be noted that the issues raised here today have been there since 2014 and none of these issues has since 2014 been concretely resolved to improve the sector. “It is against this background that we wish to remind governments at all levels and indeed all Nigerians that we cannot continue to be complacent in the face of imminent and seemly strategic annihilation of a sector that feeds and caters for millions of youths and families. A sector that if well harnessed will boost Nigeria’s technological know–how, improve ICT, create millions of employment opportunities and raise the level of both theoretical and practical technological literacy.” READ MORE: ASUU Strike Looms As Union Reviews Deal With FG Some of the issues include the non implementation of the NEEDS assessment report recommended the injection of N6.5 billion int the polytechnic education in 2014, adding that this has risen to about N8 billion, adding that without Imo,emerging the report, the essence of using tax payers money to embark on the exercise is wasted. He said the issues also include the Non – passage of the Amendment Bill of the Polytechnics Act, adding that “the delay and indifference to the passage of this bill is viewed as a ploy to fester chaos and continued crises in the sector. Recall that this bill passed through public hearing since December 2016. One wonders why an all important bill such as this still remains unattended to even when assurances have been extracted from the Senate Committee on this bill, our regulatory agencies and ministry of education. Passing this bill will go a long way to resolving majority of the contending issues in the sector, reduce conflicts, improve on the efficiency levels of the administrative organs and ultimately bring the sector in tune with global best practices. Same bill died with the 6th and 7th assemblies and the current effort is now being threatened to go same way as it is stuck in the Senate since the public hearing in December, 2016. “Shortfalls in Personnel Releases and Withdrawal of Allowances and emoluments due to cuts in personnel releases. This phenomenon has persisted till date. As if this was not enough, government added salt to injury by withdrawing allowances which hitherto were part of salaries. “Equally, unpaid arrears of promotions have continued to mount. While verifications of staff have been conducted over and over, only five institutions have received repayment of their 2016 shortfalls. This situation is compounded by the continued penchant of Governing Councils to siphon the meagre internal resources of institutions in order to assuage their unbridled appetite for luxury.” READ MORE: ASUU Strike Looms As Union Reviews Deal With FG http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/08/asup-begin-indefinite-strike-november/http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/08/asup-begin-indefinite-strike-november/ He also said that the Non Release of CONTISS 15 Migration arrears has lingered since 2011 when the approval to migrate to the CONTISS 15 salary scale was secured from the government effective 2009, adding that “Since then, only the upper cader has been fully taken care of. Staffs in the lower cader are being short changed since then as they are yet to gat the full benefit of this policy. In response, government continues to set up committees without terminal dates and any meaningful response to the union’s protests. It is worthy to note that a lot of these issues constitute violations of the agreement signed between our union and the government in 2010. This is in tandem with the now well documented penchant of government to renege on agreements. Recently efforts to address these issues led to the convening, on the 24th of October 2017, of a conciliatory meeting by the Federal Ministry of Labour in Abuja. “Curiously, the ministry in eye of the storm (The Federal Ministry of Education) was so poorly represented that no memorandum of action was agreed upon. This clearly showed the level of disdain and disrespecoft with which issues of the polytechnic sector are being handled by relevant agencies of government Read More here: http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/08/asup-begin-indefinite-strike-november/http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/08/asup-begin-indefinite-strike-november/http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/08/asup-begin-indefinite-strike-november/ |
Following questions we have received from candidates concerning the meaning of some terms like “NOT ADMITTED”, “ADMISSION IN PROGRESS” etc they see on their CAPS portal, we would like to explain some few things concerning that. Though JAMB has not made any official remark on this recently, however, we can deduce the possible meaning of these terms from what was said during the CAPS sensitization programme earlier this year. http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/08/things-note-admission-status-jamb-caps/ If your Admission Status on the CAPS Portal reads “NOT ADMITTED”, it could be that your school of choice is yet to send the proposed the list of admitted candidates to JAMB. However if your school of choice has released its admission list and your admission status on CAPS Portal still shows “NOT ADMITTED” then it simply means that you have not been considered for admission in that school. For those that their Admission Status reads “RECOMMENDED”, the possible meaning to that is though your school of choice has considered you for admission, JAMB is still reviewing your admission to ensure it complies with all the necessary criteria put in place by your school of choice and JAMB. On the other hand, if you see “ADMISSION IN PROGRESS…..” it is likely that you have met the requirements to be admitted in your school of choice but not yet considered for admission due to issues like admission quota, ELDS, Male to female ratio etc. This means you may have a chance of being admitted if some other candidates that were offered admission in the school decide to reject the admission. So if you are yet to be admitted, the best you can do is keep checking back on the portal and hope your admission status changes. For those who have been admitted, congratulations! Please go ahead to accept your admission unless you no longer want the admission; in that case, you can reject it. JAMB CAPS Admission Status Guidelines: Meaning Of Accepted, Not Admitted and RECOMMENDED JAMB CAPS ADMISSION STATUS GUIDELINES 1. Most of the Candidates have seen ‘NOT_ADMITTED’ notification on their JAMB CAPS PORTAL which simply means that they have not been offered provisional Admission at their Institution of choice. 2. Do not click on the ‘ACCEPT‘ icon until your Admission status changes to ”ADMITTED“. Note that by clicking on the ‘ACCEPT‘ it means you’ve accepted a non-existent Admission. 3 By the time your desired institution releases its admission list, you will see both “ACCEPT” and “DECLINE” icons. 4. You are also not allowed to click on the ‘ACCEPT ‘ icon until you have received an admission notification from the institution of your choice. 5. To those who have already clicked on the ‘ACCEPT‘ icon, your action implies that you have agreed and accepted the Course, and Institution Choice, so you won’t be placed in the JAMB proposed CAPS MARKET PLACE. 6. Candidates should wait for their institution of choice to release its Admission list, which would change their CAPS ADMISSION STATUS from, ‘NOT_ADMITTED’ to ‘ADMITTED’ then the choice is yours whether to click on the ‘ACCEPT’ icon or ‘DECLINE‘ if you don’t want. 7. But if by then it still shows ‘NOT ADMITTED’, then youwill surely be placed in the CAPS MARKET PLACE i.e waiting for schools that couldn’t meet up with their Admission Quota to admit you on request. 8. Lastly, for those who have already clicked on the ‘ACCEPT‘ icon, all you could do to help yourself is to keep praying and hoping to get another chance, for you have automatically disqualified yourself from being returned to the CAPS MARKET PLACE if you were not later admitted. Fresh strike may be in the offing across Nigeria Universities as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) holds its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting this week. http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/06/ASUU-strike-looms-union-reviews-deal-fg/http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/06/ASUU-strike-looms-union-reviews-deal-fg/http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/06/ASUU-strike-looms-union-reviews-deal-fg/ The NEC, which is the highest decision making body of the union, is to review Federal government’s implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) it signed with the union before it suspended its strike a few months ago. Both government and ASUU had agreed to an MoA which stipulated that the federal government would have implemented its agreed contents latest by October, 2017. The federal government according to investigation, however, was yet to implement issuance of license for the registration of Nigerian University Pension Company (NUPEMCO) which it promised to do within two weeks of strike suspension. The FG is also defaulting in payment of ‘Earned Academic Allowances and revatilisation funds’ for public universities. Some lecturers at the University of Ibadan, who spoke with journalists on the condition of anormnity at the weekend noted that it was unfortunate that the government had not paid as promised by end of October. They said they had asked their leadership not to suspend the strike until the government paid the money as promised but didn’t heed their advice. Based on the tension generated on campuses, ASUU President Professor Biodun Ogunyemi sent a mail to all the members to douse the tension over the payment of earned academic allowances “Dear Comrades, the leadership of the union is aware of the palpable tensions on our campuses over the delay in the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). “It is therefore not a surprise that for the past three days, a circular dated 24 October, 2017 related to EAA is already trending on some social media network/platforms. The leadership of the union can say categorically that the gaps/Omissions in the said circular were addressed at a meeting with the Honourable Minister of Education last weekend. We have gone far on the matter and there should be results in a matter of days. Thank you”, he wrote. It was gathered that the Federal Government audit teams have visited campuses and concluded the auditing of staff as agreed but was yet to pay the 23billion Naira promised by the end of October as payment for the 2009/2010 Earned Academic Allowances of lecturers in public universities in Nigeria. The authorities at the University of Lagos ( (UNILAG), Akoka, have confirmed the withdrawal of the admission list for candidates who have chosen to study in the university during the 2017/2018 academic session, which it earlier released last week. http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/04/breaking-unilag-confirms-withdrawal-of-admission/#more-705http://educluesonline.com/2017/11/04/breaking-unilag-confirms-withdrawal-of-admission/#more-705 The development has created palpable tension and anxiety among many parents and candidates, especially those whose names had appeared in the withdrawn list. The victims, who are currently unsure of the current position of things, have called on the authorities to urgently address the matter and ensure justice. Confirming the development, the university’s Deputy Registrar, Information, Mr. Oluwatoyin Adebule, said as a responsible institution, the management withdrew the list to investigate the veracity of the allegation of irregularities leveled against it. He said as soon as the issues are resolved, the list will be released again. According to Adebule, the withdrawal of the list became important so as to protect the integrity of the university, saying it is not in the character of the institution’s management to simply gloss over any such allegation. Details soon. On the upcoming Nov. 18 governorship polls in Anambra, the NYSC coordinator said that the body still had enough manpower to take care of its expected role in the election. “THERE ARE NO FEWER THAN 8,000 CORPS MEMBERS CURRENTLY SERVING IN THE STATE,’’ HE SAID. He said the discharged corps members who wished to take part in the election were at liberty to stay back but no one was under compulsion to do so. Meanwhile, the Director-General of the NYSC Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, will visit Anambra to address corps members ahead of the governorship election. Olawale told Newsmen that Kazuaure would hold a one-day interface with the corps members on November 7 alongside heads of other security agencies in Anambra at the Alex Ekweme Square in Awka. The Joint Administration and matriculation board has remain a major exams body conducting Universities matriculation examinations (UTME) in all the states of the federal republic of Nigeria. Since her inception, it has been many people’s Achilles hill as they can’t dance to the tune of the exams. To worsen the whole case, post-UTME that gave students the second chance of getting admission was scrapped out by President Muhammedu Buhari led administration and JAMB was made the only exams body which conducts examinations for those going to the higher institutions In order to remain on the safe side, there are certain things which every student could do to emerge successfully in the exams. I bet you, if any candidates can avoid common mistakes attributed to jamb, then success could be theirs. Reasons Why Students Fail JAMB Here are 11 good reasons why students fail Jamb 1. Failure to follow the syllables Jamb syllables have been a veritable tool in the hand of students seeking admission into higher institution. Research has shown that 90 percent of those that excel in Jamb are those who study the syllables comprehensively. We strongly recommend all candidates to have a take a look at the syllabus for every subject they registered. Pay attention to the subjects you’re anticipated to master and let it guide your studies. This way, you’ll spend no time reading things which are irrelevant to the examination. Many students have recorded successesin their UME exams because of the adamant study of the syllable. 2. Laisez-faire attitude towards Brochure: The syllables has been a helpful tool, but many students have dispute the facts that the brochure is another veritable tool for which students can use to scale through the hurdles of jamb. Studnets preparing for UME have neglected the study of the brochure. Some register to study a course blindly which may not be offered by their choice university. READ MORE: 2017/2018 JAMB Admission Status Checking Portal Now Available Candidates are advised to study the brochure carefully before filling the jamb online registration slip. This will also be a guide on a way to fill the Jamb utility form, help you in making perfect preference of the courses you are intellectually suited. 3. Poor study habits The word student only comes from the word study. You may follow the brochure and strictly adhere to the registration processes of Jamb, but the truth remains that academic excellent solely depend on veheminent study of your texts books and other recommended books in the syllables. The ultimate thing to do while preparing for UME exams is to study. A good number of student give the excuse of being so busy, hitherto they can’t study. No matter the tight schedule of a candidate, it is adviceable for a candidate to create time for effective studies. It will also be advantageous for a candidiate to enroll in extra-moral classes. 4. Failure to register JAMB in time Time waits for no man- is a popular adage. Tick says the clock tick tick is another adage. The fact that Jamb offers enough time for its registration is not a ground for candidates to register late for the exams. Procrastinating to register on time has caused a whole lot of failure in JAMB UME examinations. Here is how late registration affects candites: Candidates are given unconducive/unequipped centers. Some are slated for rural areas for the exams and guess what! These can cause candidtes to fail. 5. Lack of Speed: Candidates who apply speed speed in the exams do emerge successfully. JAMB UME examination is not an exams for babies, but for matured minds whob are ready to face the other world of the university. The examiners give a very limited time of about 40 minuites. However, this time waits for no ,man as it ticks every seconds. The time goes very fast and stops automatically for everyone. Whether you came to the exams venue late. Did you know that intelligent students still fail Jamb? Yes! Not because they are not intelligent, but because they do not apply speed. 6. Failure to arrive at the exams venue early Tears droped from her eyes, I could remember vividly she was a girl, tall and she spoke intelligently. All her tears was in vain, all her pleas was wasted as the invigilator was so tenacious in his decision. Futher findings revealed that she was the best in her secondary school who made history by recording 9A’s in the west African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE ), but on that faithful day she was late to her UME exams. That was how she failed JAMB. It is so obvious that many candidates are seen doing some print out on their exams day and this warrant their lateness to exams. It is adviseable for candidates to do all necessary things prior to the day of their exams. If your exams center is in a long distance or in another state, try to be there atleast a day before and get to know your center. 7. Computer illiteracy Yes we are in a computer a computer age where computer and other computer related devices are easily accessd, yet computer illiteracy still rocks among young school leavers. Since 2014, Jamb had progressed from the rostrum of PPT to the rostrum of CBT which made way for the utilization of computers for the exams. It is adviceable for can didates to undergo Computer Base Training before the day of their exams. 8. Incomplete materials Yes, this has possed a problem to many candidates. The exams day is like an injury period which a simple mistake can hurt for life. Before departing for the exams hall check out for your materials such as Jamb print out, Passports etc. Read the necessary instructions and adhere to it. Where you are to bring a colour print-out please don’t bring a black and white print out. 9. Deafness to attendance You must be all ears while writing your exams. Are you writing with your ears? Of course not, so candidates have to pay adequate attention to attendance while writing the exams. Your attendance indicates your present in the exams and failure to answer to it means that you did not write the exams. 10. Unconducive/unequipped exams center One major thing that poses a threat to JAMB in Nigeria is their poor and unequipped exams environment. These have pose a psychological effect on many students. The progression from PPT (Paper and pencil test) to CBT (Computer Base Test) has not change Jamb’s poor Examination Environment. 2017 UTME Candidates, Only 30% Will Be Admitted- NUC The National Universities Commission (NUC) wishes to inform all the general public that only 30% of 2017 UTME Candidates will be admitted. Out of the 1.7 million candidates who wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, will be admitted this year due to limited spaces in the universities. The executive secretary of the commission, Abubakar Rasheed, was quoted as saying this at a one-day public hearing on the regulatory conflict between JAMB and universities in offering admission in Nigeria. The hearing was organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on Tuesday. Mr. Rasheed said the limited spaces in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions have made admission crisis inevitable. Mr. Oloyede said most of the candidates, who sit for its examination annually do not have the required qualification to gain admission. “It is not true that we have 1.7 million candidates that are ready to go into the Nigerian university system. Of the 1.7 million that took the exam, I can say conveniently that not more than 30 per cent of them are not prepared for admission; they are just trying. They do not have the five O’Level required to go into the university,” he said in the report by The Nation newspapers. According to him, 80 per cent of candidates sitting for the UTME do not have the O’Level qualifications when writing the examination. “They are awaiting results. So, when we are building our theories and analysis, we need to be very cautious. “If you score 400 over 400 if you do not have the five O’Level, ” he said. TextBooks: In one of my posts, I explained that notebooks alone are not sufficient to prepare fully for Jamb; you need good textbooks. A good text is one that covers everything in your jamb syllabus. Ensure to have textbooks for all your Jamb subjects. 2. Jotter: One of the biggest mistakes of Jamb candidates is that they read without putting down facts. It is compulsory you get a notebook or jotter to put down important points while reading. Jotting important points makes your revision faster. 3. Notebooks: This is another important material you need for Jamb. Your notebooks should contain notes you have made in the past. You would have to refer to them once in a while. 4. More Than One Pen: Pen are not reliable…. They stop writing anytime. To avoid distractions while reading, you need more than one Biro while studying for Jamb utme examination. 5. Rough Notes: You need a rough note for calculations. Get a note and dedicate it to calculations and rough work. The more rough notes you consume, the more prepared you are. 6. Syllabus: Of course, Jamb syllabus is to guide you on what to read and what not to read. You need it to guide you while studying. When going through the Jamb syllabus, ensure to tick the topics you have covered thoroughly. You may want to click here to get all Jamb syllabus for free. 7. Time: You need time to schedule your studies and as well check how fast you were able to solve a mathematical problem. Remember, time is not a handset but an asset….. Killing time is not murder but suicide. 8. Calculator: This is a sure material you need. However, do not use powerful calculators to study for Jamb. Jamb make use of basic calculators and usually give them out to candidates during registration. 9. Chair And Table: This is to emphasize that you must sit down while studying for Jamb. Don’t be on the bed while studying; it is very risky. 10. Your Brain: This is the most important material you need. Your brain must be there while you are preparing for Jamb. Focus is the key; take away all possible distractions. Source: http://educluesonline.com/2017/10/25/materials-you-need-to-prepare-for-jamb/ |

First year is over, the journey continues. Just few days ago, I wrote a detailed article on the Stupid mistakes students make in year one. I started by saying that http://www.educluesonline.comsome of the stupid mistakes are as a result of what they thought was the best thing to do. Yes, you may actually be right, but rightfully wrong. After making certain stupid mistakes in their first year, college students proceed expressly to make dangerous mistakes in their second year. About 70% of students are guilty of one or more of these mistakes in their second year of study. The mistakes made in first year can be corrected in the second year. However, when stupid mistakes made in first year are followed immediately by dangerous mistakes, then things begin to fall apart.
