Obascoetubi:
The police in Lagos have
arrested four members of a
10-man robbery gang, which
specialised in burgling and
looting shop within Alaba
International Market and its
environ. The suspects
identified as Azuka, aged 27;
Onyenge e, 35; Arinze, 22;
and Afolabi, 21 were arrested
while the leader one Friday
and five others are currently
at large.

It was learned that two
members of the gang, Arinze
and Afolabi were
apprehended at the scene of
the operation on November,
20, at Alaba International
Market, Ojo in Lagos, while
two others were arrested
during the course of
investigation.

Vanguard gathered that but
for the timely intervention of
operatives of Special Anti
Robbery Squad, SARS, at the
scene, the 10-man robbery
gang led by one Friday, would
have unleashed terror on the
traders. The fleeing members
of the gang were said to have
made away with about 70
smart phones and ipads
worth N1.5 million using
locally made pistols.
Vanguard gathered that
investigation is on-going to
apprehend the other
members of the gang as well
as their receivers

Suspects account

Confessing to burgling and
looting shops, the four
suspects however denied
using weapons during the
operations.

Azuka said “We were 10 that
went to Alaba International
market to see the Chairman
of Alaba international Market
in Ojo (names withheld). We
heard he was coming to the
market, so we decided to pay
his a courtesy visit because
each time he comes around;
he gives us money which we
share among ourselves. After
waiting several hours and the
chairman didn’t show up,
Friday, our leader decided
that we burgle shops and loot
their wares. All we did was to
threaten the traders to enable
us loot their shops, we
weren’t armed.

“Everything was the idea of
our leader, Friday. He is a
very popular person in the
area. When we got there, we
broke the show-glass used to
display phones in one of the
shops while the operation
was still on, two of our
members were caught.

“I don’t have a job. What I do
to earn a living is to direct
prospective customers to
traders shop; after buying,
the traders pay me stipends
as commission.”

The second suspect, who
identified himself as Onyenge,
said “I am a footballer in
Okoko. I was arrested
because I was among the
guys that looted a phone
dealer’s shop in Alaba
International Market.

”Usually we go to such phone
dealers who specialise in
selling stolen phones to settle
us. We attacked the phone
dealers when they refused to
settle us. But we only took 10
phones, while we were still
carrying out the operations,
we saw operatives Special
Anti Robbery Squad, so I
escaped with the seven
others while they succeeded
in apprehending two. I was
traced and arrested through
the first two guys that were
nabbed.”.

Family / Re: Man, Wife, 5 Children Roasted In Midnight Mystery Fire In Gboko, Benue by tripple1: 11:28am On Dec 29, 2014
edymonte:
They had gone to bed that fateful night in Gboko, Benue State, not knowing they would not sleep to see the break of a new day – no thanks to the outage in public power supply which compelled the head of the family, Lawani Oye, to put on his power generating set.

His intention was to avail his family members a good sleeping environment, but it all turned out a disaster that claimed the lives of no fewer than seven members of the family.

They were all roasted in an inferno that engulfed the block of three flats at the early hours of Friday, at Ayankor, close to Young Secondary School, Gboko East, in Gboko local government area of Benue State.

Sunday Vanguard gathered from an eyewitness that the inferno, which started at about 1am, engulfed the block of flats, killing the husband and wife, Mr. And Mrs. Lawani Oye, and their five children. Lawani Oye was said to be a popular automobile panel beater in Gboko while his wife was a business woman in the neighborhood.

‘Oye omo Yoruba,’ as he was popularly called at the mechanic village in Gboko, was said to have switched on his power generator but mistakenly left a lantern with flames not far from where the generator was positioned on the night of the incident.

This fatal mistake led to the razing of his house and the death of his entire household.
One of his colleagues, who simply gave his name as Ter, said the late Oye, before his untimely death, was one of the most trusted hands in the panel beating business in the area.

“He was a man who knew his job and had no issues with anyone. We were all shocked to hear that he died after closing from work, alongside his entire family in the disaster,” Ter said.

“Though we have declare a day of mourning for him and the family by closing our business for the day in respect and honour for the departed family, we will all miss him because he was a good man.” .
Another eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said the fire which started when everyone had gone to bed, razed the entire block of flats, though other occupants of the building managed to escape.
According to him, “we all sat outside after an outage in public power supply, to discuss contemporary issues that night, after which everyone retired to his house.

“It was shortly after that, as usual, that they put on their generator and went to bed only for everybody in the neighborhood to be woken up by the shouts of fire and there was so much confusion as everyone ran for dear life.

“I think the fire started at about 12 midnight in Oye’s flat when everyone in the neighbourhood, including the victims of the inferno, had gone to bed.
“It was his wife and mother of the dead children, who we popularly called Mama Tunde, who also died in the disaster that raised the alarm that prompted other neighbours to rush out of their flats.
“In the midst of the confusion, we all battled to put out the strange fire in order to rescue the family but it was all in vain. After failing, however, we all managed to escape with our families.

“While this was going on, some people tried to reach the fire service but it was too late. “Our pain about this tragic and unfortunate incident is that the same woman who died with her family in the fire was the one who raised the alarm that saved others and her family could not be saved; they were burnt beyond recognition.

“The whole thing is still a mystery to neighbors and no one can at this moment ascertain the cause of the inferno but the only clue we have is that their generator was on that night, and, by the time we went round after the fire, we saw that a lantern was positioned very close to the generating set.

“Perhaps the fire was ignited by the petrol in the generator and the flame of the lantern, but no one can really say for sure”.

The eyewitness, who said some relations of the deceased family were contacted after the incident, also ruled out the possibility of sabotage.

“I believe that what happened here could be a case of negligence, but unfortunately it turned out a fatal one; it is just painful,” he added.

Sunday Vanguard further gathered that the charred remains of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of the Gboko General Hospital though unattended to because workers in the hospital were on strike while arrangements to bury them where on.

When contacted, the acting Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Benue State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Matthew Oku, said he was yet to receive the full report of the unfortunate incident from the Gboko Division of the Command.

Religion / Re: Living Faith Church Has Six Million Members Across 147 Countries – Oyedepo by tripple1: 11:07am On Dec 29, 2014
Fertilenigeria:
The President of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo, says the ministry has six million members in 147 nations across the world.

Oyedepo made the disclosure on Saturday at a breakfast meeting with members of Omu-Aran Government Secondary School Old Boys Association (OGSSOBA) at the Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara.

Oyedepo, the Chancellor of Landmark and Covenant Universities and also a member of OGSSOBA, said that the figure was ascertained at the recent convention of the church.

He advised members of old boys association to rededicate themselves to arresting infrastructure decay in all colleges and institutions across the length and breadth of the country.

Oyedepo said the task of improving the facilities in schools had gone beyond the sole responsibility of government, urging the old boys to be partners in progress.

“No amount is too small or too big toward the growth, progress and development of the schools,” he said.
Mr Segun Adeniyi, the newly elected president of the association, described Oyedepo as a living legend of the nation’s education sector.
He said that Oyedepo remained a role model to both the current and old students of Government Secondary School in Omu-Aran.

Adeniyi appealed to all members of the association to identify with the aspiration of the school in order to make it a model among its peers.

He commended the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Alhaji Jibril Haruna, for successfully organising the election and giving the association a new constitution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeniyi was elected the new president at the association’s annual general meeting held at the school’s “Hall of Fame” in Omu-Aran on Friday.

Haruna, who is the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology in Kwara, said he was grateful for the opportunity given to him to serve.

He also pledged total support to the new executive members which he urged to fully commence preparation for the celebration of the association’s 50th anniversary coming up on May, 2017.

Among the newly elected officers are Otunba Jide Adebayo of NAN as 1st National Vice President, Alhaji Bode Durotoye, 2nd National Vice President, Remi Afolayan, National Secretary-General and Mr Kayode Mathew, the Group News Editor, Vanguard Newspapers as Public Relations Officer.
