One of the most important attributes of a man with regards to leadership is his character. A man’s character is a product of his inherent and acquired aptitude, attitude, experiences and intuition. His ability to effectively combine and apply these qualities towards the welfare of the people he represents before your own, is what marks him out as a good leader. Winston Churchill described this as, “the first of all human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others”.

The process of leadership involves playing significant roles in administration and representation, especially as it pertains to crafting relevant laws and policies with the overall benefit of the people in mind. To ensure the effective discharge of this responsibility, the people’s representatives should – as a basic prerequisite – be well-educated, experienced and exposed. And so, quality representation requires knowledgeable leaders who have a world-view of issues and a heart genuinely disposed to the people’s yearnings.

As it pertains to meeting the yearnings of the electorate within Nigeria’s polity and with particular reference to Ikono-Ini Federal constituency, immense capacity is required; capacity by way of an outstanding heart and brain, garnished with experience.
Going by his antecedents, Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo epitomizes this much-desired capacity for selfless representation in 2019 Nigeria. He has, as a matter of calling, been radically committed to alleviating the plight of the less-privileged for several years now. His magnanimity is extolled within and beyond the confines of Akwa Ibom’s geo-political space.

His educational and professional attainments also portray his nous for the task of representation. Two Masters Degrees from the United Kingdom (and a Doctorate Degree on the way) in addition to over a decades’ experience as an International Health and Safety Consultant, speak volumes of his capacity. However, these have been largely unheralded – as have various other silent achievements and accolades – due, perhaps to his humble disposition.

It is a thing of pride to Akwa Ibom and worthy of note that Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo is the FIRST (and was until November 2018, the only) Nigerian Chartered Fellow Safety and Health Practitioner (CFIOSH) – the highest safety qualification awarded in United Kingdom by the world health and safety organization, IOSH. Ukpong-Udo is also the only Chartered Quality Professional (CQP) registered in United Kingdom and practicing in Nigeria. Similarly, he is also the only HSE Consultant registered in the United Kingdom and practicing in Nigeria.
Obong Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo is therefore a worthy Ambassador not only of the Ikono-Ini people, but also of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large in the global community.

America’s 33rd President, Harry S. Truman noted that, “progress occurs when courageous and skilful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better”. Ukpong-Udo is precisely this kind of leader and so his constituents deserve a change for the better, drawing from the benevolence of his heart and brain.
