A nine-month-old baby died while three
others sustained injuries after a three-
storey building collapsed on Agege Motor
Road, Mushin, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the building,
located on 353 Agege Motor Road,
Challenge Bus Stop, collapsed around 3pm
on Tuesday. The baby's parents were
among the injured.
According to rescue officials, most of the
occupants of the residential building were
not at home when the incident occurred.
The building was said to have been built as
a conventional apartment but two stories
were added to it which weakened its
foundation.
A police source at the scene said, "The
building was built like 'Face me I face
you' (single rooms apartment) behind a
four-storey building in the same
compound but the landlord added two
floors which weakened its foundation.
"The building came crashing around 3pm
and we all rushed there to rescue people.
Three people were saved and have been
taken to the hospital for treatment.
Unfortunately, a baby of about nine
months was found buried under the
rubble."
It was learnt that sympathisers were able
to salvage some properties even before the
arrival of the rescue officials.
The incident expectedly worsened the
usual heavy traffic in the area.
The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq
Fadipe, told our correspondent that rescue
efforts had ended.
He said, "We received a distress call at our
station at Isolo that there was a building
collapse and we rushed down to the scene.
Three people were rushed to hospital while
a baby of about nine months was found
dead.
"Rescue operations continued until no
other person was found under the rubble."
It was learnt that state officials had sealed
off and marked the building next to the
collapsed one for demolition.
According to state officials at the scene,
the building had earlier been identified as a
distressed. He said that some of its
occupants had vacated while some ignored
the warning and stayed behind.
When contacted on the telephone, the
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer,
Damasus Ozoani, said, "The incident
occurred during the rain. The Divisional
Police Officer, Mushin, received a distress
call and mobilised his men to the scene.
"Four people were rescued, including a
baby but on getting to the hospital, the
baby gave up the ghost."

musician Fatai Rolling Dollars, is dead.
Born 22nd July 1926, Rolling Dollar was
known for his verve and dexterity on the
guitar. His zest for life and energy, even in
old age, was also a marvel to all who
beheld him perform.
He got a new lease of life after years in the
doldrums, through Asiwaju Bola Tinubu
who revived his career and fortunes, after
the Liaison de France was brought back
into public consciousness. Fatai, who was
one of the highlife singers who made in
the 60-early 70s, had a lull in his fortunes
before providence smiled on him. Papa
Fatai is dead.
Details of his demise will follow shortly.

Joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board on
Wednesday said the Unified
Tertiary Matriculation
Examination might not hold in
troubled states in the North.
The examination, in which over 1, 735,720 candidates
are expected to participate
in will hold on Saturday.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the JAMB Registrar Chief Executive, Prof. 'Dibu
Ojerinde, said the board
"may not hesitate to stop the
examination if there is any
security problem".

Responding to a question on
security challenges in the
country, Ojerinde said,
"Yesterday it was a big
discussion among some
agents as well as JAMB. We
believe that things will be all
right. You see, we believe
that we will surmount the
problem.
"If however, there is any
problem, we may not hesitate
to stop the examination in
those areas to the extent
that we will now give the
children a chance of doing
the examination on CBT only.
"If you miss Paper Pencil
Test in a challenging area
that you cannot do the
examination, then you will
have to do the next one and
that will have to be as from
May 18.
"With God, we shall not
experience any problem. We
have put everything humanly
possible in place, we have
put this before God, and we
believe he is not going to
sleep on that day. But if
there is a need for
postponement in those
places, we shall not
hesitate."
There have been reported
cases of violence occasioned
by the activities of the
insurgent group, Boko
Haram, in many states in the
north in recent time.
Meanwhile, Ojerinde, said the
Board had concluded
arrangement for its first
Computer Based Test in 70
centres across the nation
from May 18 to June 1.

The CBT, he said, was an
alternative to the Dual Based
Test and PPT scheduled for
Saturday.
Ojerinde said 1,629,102
candidates applied for the
IPT, 15,008 candidates for
the Dual Based Test while
91,610 candidates applied
for the CBT.
He said the figure for 2013
showed an increase of
231,789 applicants when
compared with last year's
figure of 1,503,931
representing an increase of
13.35 per cent.
Ojerinde said 145 visually
impaired candidates
registered for the
examination while 196
inmates registered for it from
Kaduna and Lagos prisons.
