To start with Edison's Mother was a Teacher and eventhough good education was hard to come by in those days, homeschooled him.

If he struggled in school, he could have done that due to several things:

1. He was partially deaf
2. It is belived he had ADHD
3. Maybe he was smatter than what was being thought in his class, and got bored.

He was knwon to be an avid reader, was curious and was experimenting a lot even as a Child.

It is pretty obvious if he never had access to any education to sharpen his mind, he would have wasted away.
