That is why the first step is allowing marketers set their prices, instead of government setting prices so that the downstream sector can become a profitable sector which would attract investment needed to increase refining capacity.

The truth is , I don't want government building new refineries. Refining fuel is a private business thing...not a government thing.

You spoke my mind. In addition, the average oil price for the past 3 months is at $ 65 per barrel which captures data till date. The excuses given today that the landing cost has risen to N205 is no news, after all it has been like this and even higher when fuel price hit $80 per barrel. I keep telling people that we Nigerians are our greatest problem. Everybody is too greedy. Creating artificial scarcity by marketers, FG deceives the masses with subsidy scam and depot authorities diverting fuel to other countries are the major problems hitting the downstream sector. How much will it cost to repair our refinery? This spans to other sectors, take for example, aviation. A country that claims to be African giant yet does not have a single carrier, not even a single plane in operation. Everybody just want to steal, build houses, buy cars, go overseas, and what else again?

No, NNPC cannot make enough money to keep our refineries in good shape because they import oil , sell it to marketers below the market price, and then get paid the difference between the market price and cannot make a profit.

And the corruption and sabotage happens because when you are not making money, you look for sly ways to make money.

If subsidy goes...all the sabotage and corruption will end. Because....continuing with that would make things worse for them (unlike now where thanks to being a government company they get free money whatever happens).

And of course...there is foreign investment, more profits and more jobs (Those cabals would EARN MUCH MORE under subsidy removal)

And eventually, prices would come down.

On a serious note...the fact is, subsidy means that most marketers and NNPC lose at least N60 per liter of fuel sold...and don't make a profit.

Many of them make ends meet by

1.Smuggling fuel to Niger and Benin...where fuel is above N200, and earn a tidy profit

2.Inflating subsidy claims (though Buhari cut that one by making NNPC sole importer)

On the other hand...if fuel goes up to N400...yes, I would cry, BUT....[b]the profits raised will attract investment into things like refineries...[/b]which means increased refining at home, and eventually prices dropping.

Niger by the way pays N397 per liter for fuel...and they are poorer than we are. Benin pays N298. I asked Google.

Again, business is about greed. The minute you realize that the better.You'll sleep better at night.

What I want to hear from Buhari is an announcement that marketers would be setting the price of fuel...not government.

Yes, by the following day, the price of fuel would be N250 and above. Yes, PEOPLE would suffer.

But investment would flow in, because now with the new regimen, there would be profits to be made. And these prifits would be reinvested in increasing refining capacity and more jobs. Plus, all the money poured into subsidy would be saved...and poured into railways and educaiton and health.

And eventually prices will fall.

Oil is at $80 .Nigeria needs it at $140 to run a balanced budget. We don't have the money, we have heavy debts due to the crash of oil prcies in 2016 to below $50...and we are taking on debts to stay afloat. We have no choice. Subsidy must go.

the problem is nigerian marketers are greedy morafvckers....

you would be surprised how deep the philosophy of get rich quick is in the hearts of nigerians....

dont cry then when you end up payin 400naira per liters....

You are simply comparing apple & oranges. Countries like China & India or countries in Southeast Asia are industrialized. They are exceptional case. They have developed technology and are able to provide better life even after lower income levels. Same isn't true for Africa.

And even if we adjust cost, Nigeria still has most poor people. I'm not saying that Africa or Nigeria is as bad as seen in pictures. But I'm an Asian. I've visited China, Indonesia, Vietnam, RSA, Nigeria & Kenya. And I know what's on ground.
No offense intended. But Nigeria isn't upto there yet.

It's Central Asia essentially. South Asia is not a real term. It was used for countries left after break up of India. Americans used to not get confused between Mongoloids (East Asians) and Indians while those countries use it to feel "less Indian".

China and India are massive countries with areas and populations comparable to complete continents. It's not fair to compare them in numbers with small countries.
If they have highest number of poors, they got highest number of non-poor and rich people as well.
That's why percentage matters. In terms of percentage, they both are better by miles when compared to other countries with high number of people living in poverty.

Asian countries are not fragile states. They are emerging economies undergoing resurrection and renaissance to challenge dominance of west.

nigeria is not a small country....
