Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amb. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, has emerged President of the 74th UN General Assembly. https://listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/00530237_d2be6a7dacf37e0fe640cf29ef158f4d_arc614x376_w614_us1598857173.jpg This makes him the 74th holder of the position taking over from Ecuardorian María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés. "Peace and security, poverty eradication, zero hunger, quality education, climate action and inclusion will constitute a major priority of my presidency," said Muhammad-Bande. Muhammad Bande, the sole candidate for the position, was elected through acclamation at the 87th plenary meeting of the Assembly in New York on Tuesday. Prof Bande, who will take office in September, is the second Nigerian to hold the office after Joseph Garba, a retired military officer and diplomat, who led the organization between 1989 and 1990. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has applauded the emergence of Prof. Bande, describing it as a positive development and demonstrates the confidence in Nigeria's ability to pilot the affairs of the revered global institution. https://listwand.com/un-general-assembly-elects-nigerian-as-president/

Anthony Joshua was knocked out in sparring before his shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr, according to reports. The 29-year-old suffered the first loss of his career on Saturday evening as he was put down four times on the way to a seventh-round stoppage at Madison Square Garden. Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn insisted after the fight that they were happy with the preparations and the training camp ahead of the contest against Ruiz, who has become the first Mexican heavyweight champion. But according to World Boxing News , Joshua was hurt badly in a sparring session in the build-up to the fight after he was knocked to the canvas by Joey Dawejko. Dawejko, a 28-year-old 5′ 10″ heavyweight, who is nicknamed ‘Tank’ and has a professional record of 19 wins, seven defeats and four draws, was one of the fighters recruited to help Joshua prepare for his bout against Ruiz during his camp in Miami. Joshua was also forced to dismiss suggestions that he had suffered an injury during sparring after he was seen with a large bruise and a cut on his face just days before the fight. When asked about the injuries to his face, Joshua told Seconds Out: ‘Oh no, that was just physio stuff really. ‘No-one really does that to me in sparring and stuff like that. So that was just more physio stuff. But that’s it.’ Asked what he meant by ‘physio stuff’, Joshua replied: ‘Like rehabilitation, recovery.’ Hearn, however, is adamant that Joshua did not have a problem before the fight. ‘I’d like to tell you he [AJ] had a terrible camp, he wasn’t focused, but I didn’t see that. He worked very hard in training as he always does,’ Joshua’s promoter told talkSPORT. ‘I think it was a huge shock for everybody, AJ was probably the calmest person of everybody. ‘I even said to him today, ‘People said you didn’t look right.’ ‘[He replied], ‘I was fine, I just got beat, I just got beat by the better man on the night, I got hit by a shot that I didn’t recover from and that’s it. Let’s go again, back to work.’’ https://metro.co.uk/2019/06/03/anthony-joshua-knocked-sparring-shock-andy-ruiz-jr-defeat-9794502/

Measuring just over 3,000 metres, Egypt sets the world record for the longest food table at a Ramadan breakfast meal. https://listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/1024x576_776633874808773.jpg Nearly 7,000 people attended the event which was held at Egypt’s new administrative capital on Saturday (June 1), in the desert east of Cairo. The previous world record was set in 2018 by the Ajman municipality in the United Arab Emirates, with a table measuring 2,983.64 metres, serving 6,000 people. The table in Egypt beat the former record by 200 metres, measuring at 3189.83 metres. Many happily shared their meal of juices, water, and food, provided by the administrative capital. The record comes after Egypt inaugurated the world’s widest suspension bridge, which crosses the Nile just north of central Cairo, and considered a key link in a highway stretching from the Red Sea in the east to Egypt’s northwestern Mediterranean coast. https://listwand.com/egypts-3189m-long-ramadan-meal-table-dubbed-worlds-longest/ |

Telecommunication giant, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc , has paid the last tranche of the N330 billion fine imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The final payment means that MTN has completed the N330 billion infraction fine and no longer owes the Federal Government. The development was disclosed by MTN Nigeria’s Chief Corporate Relations Officer , Tobechukwu Okigbo . According to him, the successful resolution of the fine was as a result of strong collaboration between the company and the NCC. “We are very pleased to have completed the payment of the N330 billion negotiated settlement with the NCC. We are particularly gratified to be in a position to have fully met the terms of the settlement within the agreed timeframes. “I would like to thank the NCC for their constructive and collaborative approach to this issue, and believe that we emerge from it with a stronger relationship, focused on ensuring maximum value is delivered to our people, from a strong and growing telecoms sector.” Back Story – In October 2015, NCC imposed a fine of N1.04 trillion fine on the telecom giant for non-compliance with a deadline set by the commission to disconnect all non-registered sim cards. The move by NCC followed accusations by mobile phone users that the regulator had failed to bring operators to account for poor services to subscribers. Meanwhile, NCC later reduced the fine to N780 billion in December 2015, having taken into consideration the interest of the stability of the telecom sector. The fine was further reduced to N330 billion, even as MTN agreed to be listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE). These agreements have now been fulfilled by MTN, including its Listing of 20.3 billion Shares in May 2019. https://listwand.com/mtn-nigerian-finally-settles-its-n330-billion-fine-after-4-years/
