Nigeria is among the top 10 worst conflict-affected countries to be a child and it is currently ranked behind Somalia, South Sudan, Mali, Chad, Niger and Central African Republic in cutting under-5 child deaths, a new report by Save the Children has shown. https://i1.wp.com/listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/child_wm_1401996314.jpeg?resize=2160%2C1440&ssl=1 Save the Children in the report released on Tuesday titled 2019 Global Childhood Report evaluated 176 countries on children’s access to health care, education, nutrition and protection from harmful practices like child labor and child marriage. The report said Nigeria is ranked in the bottom 10 of the index rankings. “The country is ranked 170 out of 176 doing slightly better than countries like Somalia, South Sudan, Mali, Chad, Niger and Central African Republic in number 176.” Other worst conflict-affected countries to be a child are Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen. “Large numbers of children in these countries are living close to high-intensity conflicts marked by grave violations of children’s rights (killing and maiming, recruitment, sexual violence, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals and denial of humanitarian access).” However, the report showed that West and Central Africa have cut under-5 child deaths by nearly half in a generation. While noting that the world has made remarkable progress in protecting childhoods, it attributed the feat to strong political leadership, social investments, and the success of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In the year 2000, it said an estimated 970 million children were robbed of their childhoods due to ‘childhood enders’ – life-changing events like child marriage, early pregnancy, exclusion from education, sickness, malnutrition and violent deaths. “That number today has been reduced to 690 million – meaning that at least 280 million children are better off today than they would have been two decades ago,” the report indicated. Launched ahead of International Children’s Day on June 1st, Save the Children’s Global Childhood Report includes the annual End of Childhood Index, which finds that circumstances for children in the majority of countries across West and Central Africa have improved since 2000. The Dangote Group has for the second year emerged the most admired African brand ahead of the telecommunication giant, MTN, in a survey of 100 Africa’s best brands announced in Johannesburg at the weekend. https://i1.wp.com/listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/dango654471895.jpg?resize=650%2C350&ssl=1 According to the survey, Dangote retains rank as #1 most admired African brand recalled when consumers are prompted for African brands. Other Nigerian brands that made the list of most admired African brands include: Glo, Star Beer, and Jumia. South African telecoms brand MTN is the #1 African brand spontaneously recalled brand, while surging Ethiopian brand Anbessa Shoes, at #2, swopped positions with Nigerian conglomerate, Dangote, which is the #3 most admired brand of African of origin. However, when consumers are prompted to recall the most admired African brand, Dangote retains the #1 position. Reacting to the news, the Group Chief Corporate Communication Officer of Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina had this to say. “We are touching lives by providing their basic needs and empowering Africans more than ever before creating jobs, reducing capital flight, and helping government conserve foreign exchange drain by supporting different industrial infrastructural projects of African governments. “All these are our credo and we do not compromise it. And the ranking is just an acknowledgement of all these by our stakeholders, We keep our brand promise and stay authentic,” he said. The Brand Africa 100 rankings are based on a survey among a representative sample of respondents 18 years and older, conducted in 25 countries across Africa. Covering all African economic regions, collectively these countries account for an estimated 80% of the continent’s population and 75% of the GDP. Overall, the 2018/19 Brand Africa 100 list, which is calculated from 15,000 brand mentions illustrates a very diversified range of brands in Africa and shows year on year consistency with 80% of the Top 100 brands having been in the Top 100 Most Admired Brands in previous years. Attempting to leave Africa at all cost, Spanish police guards on duty at the border in Beni-Enzar, Morocco arrested four stowaway migrants in less than 3 hours on Saturday, May 24, 2019. Images of the migrants have since flooded the internet and trended on social media. https://i2.wp.com/listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/car-booth-886x624782153976.jpg?resize=886%2C624782153976&ssl=1 The four Moroccan migrants whose names and identities have yet to be made public include a 15-year-old girl, two young men aged 20 and 21 and a 31-year-old man. While one was caught hiding behind a car’s dashboard, the other three were caught in an engine compartment behind a car’s rear seats and in a dumper truck respectively in different cars. https://i1.wp.com/listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/528201911313_0e72xljwwr_caaaarrrrr258909647.jpg?w=660&ssl=1 The migrants have since been arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment after suffering from pains in various parts of their bodies, suffocation and disorientation due to the strange positions they were in. The drivers of each vehicle have also been taken in by the police for questioning. This is not the first time Spanish officers working at the border have reported such attempts to enter Europe. Since January there have been arrests of several Africans hiding in all sorts of places with the hope of crossing over to Europe. Same can be said in several other Northern African countries that share borders with or are close to European countries such as Libya, Tunisia and Egypt. https://i2.wp.com/listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/some-who-knew-they-couldnt-pass-legally-tried-to-hide-themselves-agents-discovered-the-sleeping-boy-pictured-below-inside-the-dashboard-of-a-car-coming-from-mexico-in-20031643492058.jpg?w=1024&ssl=1 With the number of visa rejections on the rise since 2017, several Africans are returning to the rather dangerous method of making the trip to Europe and making a life there. In January 2019, two men were found sewn into mattresses in Morocco with hopes of making it into Europe through Spain. A 12-year-old boy was also discovered behind a dashboard in 2017. https://i2.wp.com/listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/capture-4-52105274995.png?w=707&ssl=1 In 2017, Spanish authorities arrested a man and a woman from Guinea hiding in the dashboard of a car attempting to enter Spain through the Ceuta. In 2016, a Moroccan woman was arrested for attempting to smuggle an African immigrant inside a travel suitcase at the airport. https://i0.wp.com/listwand.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/93209843_ceutacar1epa2jan1104609591.jpg?w=624&ssl=1 In December last year, hundreds of desperate illegal African migrants caused a security breach when they attempted to scale the fence from the Moroccan end and climb into Ceuta. The incident left more than 50 Moroccan and Spanish border guards injured. Migrants who prefer to travel through Libya usually join illegal boats which could lead to death from drowning, cold or being shot.
