How much would the population of Nigeria change if everyone who wanted to move to another country actually moved where they wanted?

Based on interviews with nearly half a million adults in 152 countries between 2015 and 2017, Gallup gauged the potential net gains and losses to a country’s adult population by subtracting those who would like to move out of a country from those who would like to move into a country.

The news isn’t good for Nigeria, as the study showed that more people want to leave this country than actually come to it. We’d be looking at a total net migration of 46%.

In the sub-category of youth, Nigeria would be down another 57%.

How many people want to leave Nigeria vs how many people want to live here:

It’s estimated Nigeria would lose 46% of its population if citizens could pick and choose where they stayed. What this means is if Nigerians could actually pick and choose where they stayed, 54% of Nigerians would choose to stay while a whopping 46% will choose to leave. Put simply, an estimation of 92 million people would leave the country, bringing the total population to 107 million. In comparison to the rest of the world, Nigeria didn't perform well either, the country was ranked among the bottom 10.

Countries that would gain the most citizens
Would-be emigres are favouring New Zealand , and it’s by some distance. The Oceanic country would see its population rise by 231% if everyone got their chance to switch borders. According to the Potential Net Migration Index (PNMI), Singapore, Iceland and the UAE would see numbers soar by more than 200%, whereas Switzerland completes the top five.

Haiti, Liberia and Congo would all see their population slashed by more than 50%, whereas Nigeria completes an infamous bottom five – having the unwanted distinction of being more unpopular than Syria.

International Rescue Committee’s emergency response experts have ranked the countries most at risk of humanitarian catastrophe next year and Nigeria was ranked among the top ten countries most at risk of humanitarian crises in 2019.

The ranking, which was released by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), has 21 countries on its list, with Yemen taking the top spot.

According to the list which was published on December 17, 2018, the 2019 elections may also play a role in sparking greater conflict.

According to the publication by IRC, "The International Rescue Committee’s emergency response experts have ranked the countries most at risk of humanitarian catastrophe next year", noting that the top ten, "account for approximately half of internally displaced people and two-thirds of refugees across the globe".

“2018 was a devastating year for millions around the world, with more people displaced from their homes than ever before. In many of the world’s most challenging places, armed conflict and man-made crisis mean life will get worse and not better in 2019," Bob Kitchen, the IRC’s Vice President for Emergencies, said.

With Nigeria taking the number eight spot on the top ten list, other countries are Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Syria, Central African Republic, Ethiopia and Somalia.

On Nigeria's position, IRC noted that: "During 2018, Nigeria has experienced persistent attacks from armed groups as well as communal violence exacerbated by competition for water and land resources. As a result, Over 2 million Nigerians have been displaced internally and 230,000 have sought refuge in neighboring countries".

On the outlook for 2019, the IRC stated that: "Violence could intensify, triggering more displacements and exacerbating food insecurity for millions of Nigerians. The presidential election in February 2019 may also have a destabilizing impact and could spark greater conflict, leading to further displacement".
