Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed during a brief press conference today, 23rd of October, 2020 that the curfew that was imposed on Tuesday, 20th of October will be eased off on Saturday morning.

According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagosians will only be allowed to move within the time of 8 am to 6 pm from Saturday. Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered police officers to stop checking citizens’ phones. For years, operatives had insisted on searching phones of Nigerians youths at checkpoints or any location.

During such encounters at roadblocks or patrols, policemen, in most cases, forcefully snatch phones belonging to innocent citizens.

They search through e-mails, text messages, as well as chats on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The victim is then “billed” an amount to secure the release of the gadget. Any claim of right or refusal to pay could lead to severe beating, seizure of the phone – or both.

The Federal Government (FG) is set to allocate the sum of N447.6 billion to the Ministry of Police Affairs in 2021, if approved by the National Assembly. This was disclosed by the government (FG) in the 2021 Appropriation Bill presented to the lawmakers last week Thursday.

NPF’s allocation since 2018 The allocations of the government to the Nigeria Police Force have been on the increase in the last four years and the difference between the figures has been around N40 billion or more. For instance, the 2021 proposed allocation increased to N447.6 billion from N403.45 billion allocated in 2020, which is about an 11% increase. That of 2020 also recorded an increase from N366.13 billion allocated to the force in 2019. This represents an increase of about 10%.

The difference between 2019 and 2018 allocations was over N42 billion when it increased from N324.2 billion (N366.13 billion in 2019).

What you should know The breakdown of the allocation to the police in the 2021 budget is N18.45 billion is for overhead expenses, N417.2 billion on personnel expenses, and N11.98 billion on capital expenses. N14.23 million is for the construction of MOPOL and SARS headquarters in Okpoko Ayamelum, Anambra State. N166.7 million is for Arms and Ammunition in 2021, at a time several Nigerians have called for an end to police brutality across the nation. The Police also plans to purchase riot controlling equipment worth N57.87 million and 1000 pieces of bulletproof vests worth N67.6 million. Procurement of educational materials and upgrade of training equipment worth N128.5 million across training institutions in the country. Should there be more protests, either by angry youths or other groups, it appears the police is prepared for 2021. Backstory The men of the force had lamented over what they described as underfunding of the Nigeria Police Force to the tune of about N1.1trillion between 2011 and 2015, which they argued weakened the capacity of the police to perform their duties and adequately improve the institution. Former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, had argued that neither the funding of the capital projects of the police nor the overheads had risen beyond N11 billion between 2011 and 2015, compared to actual funding requirements of up to N71 billion for overheads and N345.7 billion for capital projects in the case of 2015 for example.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has given justification to why President Muhammadu Buhari compared the prices of fuel between Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and other countries. Mohammed said Buhari’s comparison was justified because there was nothing wrong with comparing. The Minister stated this while featuring on Radio Nigeria’s current affairs program, Radio Link, yesterday in Abuja.

During his Independence Day speech, Buhari had compared the prices of buying fuel in Nigeria with countries like Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Niger, and others. He had stressed that Nigerians can’t pay less for fuel. But, Buhari’s remark had led to criticisms by Nigerians. Backing Buhari, Mohammed said: “Some people have said that why should we compare ourselves to Saudi Arabia with better infrastructure and higher wages. “Our answer to that is very simple. Saudi Arabia has 34 million people while Nigeria has 200 million people. “Saudi Arabia produces 10 million barrels of crude oil per day, while Nigeria produces, at its best, 2.1 million barrel per day. “Their population is about one-sixth of Nigeria’s population, and they are blessed with more resources. Therefore, they can afford to pay higher wages and build infrastructure. “Our argument must be put in proper perspective. As we have said, whatever money we make from the subsidy removal, we will invest in infrastructure development.”

The Presidency has explained why President Muhammadu Buhari compared the fuel price in Saudi Arabia to that of Nigeria during his Independence Day national broadcast on October 1. The Presidency also said it was unwise and unfair for the government to subsidize the cost of petrol for city dwellers while the farmers and herders who have no cars nor generators are left with nothing. A 17-year-old girl identified as Minette Fotsting is reported to have been raped to death by unknown men in Douala, Littoral region of Cameroon. It was gathered that the teenager fondly called Kitty, was found in critical condition besides a construction site in Logpom district not far from her family house in the early of Wednesday, September 30.

She was rushed to a clinic in the Bepanda district of the 5th Arrondissement in Douala for medical attention. Despite the urgent care administered on her, Kitty passed away hours later.

The findings of the examinations carried out by doctors indicate vaginal discharge, vulvar secretions and dehydration “suggesting signs of forceful recent sexual intercourse” an interpretation supported by the family.

It was learned that the deceased was also sodomized by the unknown assailants. According to local media, Kitty arrived Douala from the West Region to continue her studies while staying with her elder brother.

A 50-year-old man identified as Ashiru Aliyu was killed by gunmen early Monday morning at Daulai village, Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State. Many women were also reportedly abducted by the gunmen who also rustled some domestic animals and looted foodstuff during the attack.

Residents said the gunmen arrived in the village about 1 a.m and started shooting. They were said to have killed the victim in the process. One of the residents said the gunmen were about 30 in number. It was also learned that some of the villagers had to escape into the bush and nearby communities to avoid being attacked.

He made the disclosure in Katsina while speaking with journalists.
