Thierry Henry believes Messi's PSG spell was not a disappointment and he gave his reason. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has once again come to the defence of Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint Germain spell. The France u-21 manager, in his playing days, shared a dressing room with the Argentina international in Barcelona for three seasons. He has taken to punditry in retirement as well as coaching. Covering Ligue 1 for Amazon, the 1998 World Cup winner regularly took Messi’s side against PSG supporters, who made a habit of booing the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner. Henry has maintained this stance in a recent conversation, refusing to classify the 36-year-old two seasons in Paris as a disappointment, despite a relatively mediocre number and a lack of success on the European stage. What Henry said about Messi’s PSG spell The 46-year-old, in an interview with RMC Sport, was asked if he thought Messi’s PSG career was subpar, and he replied that he did not think so. Henry explained his thought process, citing the presence of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the team as a hindrance to the Inter Miami forward’s brilliance. "No, I'll say why. I remind you that when I arrived at the beginning, on Amazon, I said, 'For me to play this team [The PSG squad], it's a headache," he said, per GOAL. “I was once again talking about structure and organisation. I know you're going to laugh again, but how do you play with all three (Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe) at the same time?" “When he (Messi) played with the Argentina team, a structure. There are not three Messis, just him. You put him in a framework where he alone is the boss, [and he will shine]. “But at some point, I'll tell you something: I left Arsenal. This is something super important. I cried when I left Arsenal for Barcelona. It took me a year to realise that I had left Arsenal, in fact." I think I'm ready to go. I’m ready.” “I’ve got a lot of players that can also help and support me,” he added. “So, for me, I’m ready to give my all for the team. Randy Waldrum has reportedly received his sack letter as Super Falcons coach, but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has come out to clarify the situation. The NFF has denied rumours that the body has sacked Randy Waldrum as Super Falcons coach. Waldrum’s position as Super Falcons coach has been unclear since he called out the NFF just before the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Waldrum's position with the NFF The American tactician criticised the NFF for failing to prepare the Super Falcons adequately for the Women’s World Cup and also called the organisation out for failing to pay his and the players’ wages. Waldrum took the team to the 2023 Women’s World Cup, leading the team to an impressive round of 16 finish, with the Super Falcons losing to eventual finalist England only on penalties. Waldrum is still Super Falcons' coach Nonetheless, despite his impressive achievement, his future remained uncertain after the tournament. Reports then emerged earlier this week that the American tactician had been sacked as Super Falcons coach. However, the NFF has now come out to deny the report, saying the body has not reached a decision on the future of the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers women's soccer team. According to popular NPFL journalist Adepoju Tobi, the NFF is still deliberating on the future of Waldrum. Waldrum’s current contract as Super Falcons coach expires next month, but with the Olympic qualifiers coming up soon, the NFF could consider handling the American a contract extension. The body has already extended the contract of Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro until after the AFCON and could follow the same route with Waldrum. The club plays in the Babura Local Government Football Association League, Jigawa State. Confirming the deal, Aliyu Eloquent posted on his Facebook page, "Officially, ABDULHAMID SABO (ABUT) join AREWA UNITED from HOTTENHAM. With a fees of (N2000). The deal is done." Meanwhile, Nigerians have reacted to the deal, calling it a 'great deal.' While some saw the deal as a welcome development, others queried the transfer fee. A Facebook User, Adejoh Ernest said that, "What a great deal. Congratulations" Another user Jafar Zumar added that, "wetin be this useless deal" One Kabiru Saleh, who was shocked at the ridiculously low transfer fee, said, "Only 2k?" However, a quick look through Aliyu Eloquent's Facebook posts reveals that several other players have been transferred, with less than N6,000 being paid as transfer fees. The transfer fees paid range from N2,000 to a maximum of N5,000. This is a reflection of the poor state of grassroots football in Nigeria, and the administrators will have to do something real quick. After the Super Eagles' 6-0 win against Sao Tome, Some Nigerians believe Osimhen stat padded against Sao Tome to win AFCON Q top scorer and move closer to breaking Yekini's record. The Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded a comfortable 6-0 victory against the Parrots of Sao Tome and Principe in their final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Sunday, September 10, 2023. The Super Eagles had a full-capacity crowd at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo thanks to Governor Umo Eno who made tickets free. Super Eagles 6-0 Sao Tome The Super Eagles recorded a 10-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe the last time the two sides met in Agadir Morocco. Hoping for a repeat performance, Jose Peseiro who recently extended his contract with the Super Eagles put out four attackers. It was Napoli striker Victor Osimhen who broke the deadlock in the 14th minute heading in a cross by Ademola Lookman. Lookman received a ball from captain Wilfred Ndidi to score the second as the Super Eagles went to the halftime break with a massive lead. To start the second half, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi continued his good form dispatching the third. Osimhen had his brace for Nigeria's fourth from the penalty spot. New AC Milan recruit Samuel Chukwueze assisted Osimhen to score the fifth and get a hattrick. Bayern Leverkusen hot forward Victor Boniface assisted Chukwueze for the sixth as the Super Eagles wrapped up a comfortable victory. Victor Osimhen stat padding for Super Eagles? Following the victory, Napoli striker Osimhen rose to the top of the trends on social media. The 24-year-old was charged by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) ahead of the final game and ended up delivering. With his three goals against Sao Tome and Principe, Osimhen ended the qualification series with 10 goals and the top scorer award. There were mixed reactions to his performance on social media. There were some fans who believed that Osimhen stayed in the game to add more goals to the tally. Osimhen should have being substituted for rest There are fans who believe that with qualification already secured, Super Eagles head coach Peseiro could have tested out some new names in the national team instead of playing Osimhen for 90 minutes against Sao Tome. One of the invited players yet to make his debut is Gent forward Gift Orban who watched from the bench as Osimhen featured for all 90 minutes. Orban is one of the most sought-after prospects in world football and getting him integrated with the national team was a priority. Osimhen chasing Yekini? There have been conversations about Osimhen chasing the record held by the late Rashidi Yekini to become the top scorer for Nigeria. After staying on the pitch for 90 minutes against Sao Tome Osimhen now has 20 goals with the national team. As he gets close, some fans now belive it is only a matter of time before he surpasses Yekini. Drake Curse strikes again, Rapper loses 400 million naira as Adesanya loses Middleweight title to Strickland. The middleweight UFC championship was up for grabs inside the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia, as New Zealand Mixed Martial Artist of Nigerian descent Israel Adesanya took on American Sean Strickland. Dricus du Plessis was supposed to battle "The Last Stylebender" but the South African injuries took longer to heal than anticipated, so Strickland stepped in to fight for the title. Sean Strickland defeats Israel Adesanya Adesanya was able to block Strickland's shot and put up successful leg kicks. Adesanya carried on kicking his opponent's lead leg until Strickland landed a right-hand blow to knock down the champion. Near the end of the round, Strickland dropped Adesanya with a right hand. Strickland with relentless pressure and steady upright boxing destroyed Adesanya in the first round and never looked back. After five rounds, all judges gave the contest a 49-46 score in favor of Strickland. Drake loses 400 million naira as Strickland beats Adesanya Drake is known for making significant bets before fights and did so on Adesanya ahead of the main event of UFC 293. The 36-year-old Canadian rapper flaunted a massive $500,000 wager made on Adesanya to defeat Sean Strickland in the main event. Drake would receive $920,000 if Adesanya were defeated but now he is trending on social media. After Adesanya lost, fans pointed out that Drake had lost a total of 400 million naira from his latest bet. The Canadian rapper has, however, also suffered some devastating losses because every high is followed by a low. In August, Drake spent $250K (£200,000) on Nate Diaz to defeat Jake Paul, but the YouTuber ultimately prevailed by unanimous decision. Drake was not the only major celebrity to get the fight between Adesanya and Strickland wrong. American-born Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer David Adedeji Adeleke who is professionally known as Davido wished Adesanya good luck but it backfired. Adesanya has now put out a message that he will address the loss to Strickland later. Don't Sleep!! Wake up to watch Israel Adesanya fight Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 293 in Australia New Zealand professional mixed martial artist of Nigerian descent Israel Mobolaji Adesanya is set for a return to the octagon. The 34-year-old Adesanya is set to face off against American Sean Strickland in the main event of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 293 in Australia. Why Israel Adesanya is fighting Sean Strickland, not Dricus Du Plessis The victor of Robert Whittaker vs. Dricus Du Plessis, the co-main event of UFC 290, was supposed to go on to face Adesanya. Whittaker had a winning streak of 13 fights going since his victory over Mike Rhodes in 2014 before his losses to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 and UFC 271. Adesanya, who was sitting ringside, was ecstatic when Du Plessis overpowered Whittaker. A win by Whittaker over Du Plessis didn't help him much because he knew he needed a new opponent and had already defeated Whittaker twice. It didn't help that Du Plessis, a South African, had said that Adesanya wasn't "a real African," which offended the reigning champion who was born in Nigeria. Adesanya traveled to China to fight extensively after leaving Nigeria in pursuit of combat experience before landing in New Zealand. Adesanya entered the ring after Du Plessis had won, and the two engaged in a staredown. The big event of UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia, seemed to be Du Plessis vs. Adesanya for the middleweight championship. Du Plessis then claimed that he couldn't compete due to a foot problem. Only Sean Strickland remained in the top six who Adesanya had not faced after effectively wiping out the division. Strickland, not Du Plessis, will therefore be vying for the crown on Saturday. Israel Adesanya vs Sean Strickland build-up for UFC 293 Earlier this year, Strickland made the first jab about Adesanya being Chinese during an appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast. However, a video showing Adesanya waving the Chinese flag quickly gained popularity on social media. In a different video, The Last Stylebender also acknowledged embracing Chinese culture. Israel Adesanya, who was raised in New Zealand but was born in Nigeria, spent a significant amount of his illustrious kickboxing career competing in Chinese provincial circuits where he was known as "The Black Dragon." The reigning middleweight champion of the UFC frequently attributes his development as a fighter to his time living in China. The jabs from Strickland don't appear to affect Adesanya; he even makes jokes about knocking him out for the sake of China. Adesanya said that he formerly worked as a side hustle staring in Chinese advertisements. The Last Stylebender as Adesanya is known is now expected to wear red shorts representing China against Strickland. Adesanya is not shy to remind the world as UFC Middleweight champion that he is of Nigerian descent. At the face-off, Adesanya came out wearing a Green and White necklace that has gone viral. The combination of the necklace got a lot of reactions from Nigerians on social media. There have been jabs upon jabs from both fighters as the build-up is now over. Adesanya has stated he intends to paint his nails coming into the octagon to face Strickland. Time and where to watch Israel Adesanya vs Sean Strickland The fight between Adesanya and Strickland will take place early Sunday, September 10, 2023, in Nigeria. It will be Adesanya's first defense of the UFC Middleweight crown since he recaptured it from Alex Pereira early this year. The fight will take place at the Quodos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. Adesanya and Strickland take center stage in the main event of UFC 293 and their start is scheduled for 3 am Nigerian time. It will be available on ESPN Plus and on Cable network DSTV for Nigerians. Lionel Messi is currently the odds-on favourite to win the upcoming Ballon d'Or. Erling Haaland is set to miss out on the 2022/2023 Ballon d'Or to Inter Miami and Argentina playmaker Lionel Messi, according to Goal. The shortlist for the elusive prize will be announced on Wednesday, September 6 with Messi and Haaland expected to be the two main contenders. Messi is now reportedly in pole position to win his eighth Golden Ball after a remarkable 2022, capped with the ultimate footballing prize -- the FIFA World Cup. Despite a disappointing second half of the season with PSG, Messi's incredible performance in Qatar where he scored 7 goals (including two in the final) is likely to pip the award in his favour. Haaland was pivotal as Manchester City secured a historic treble, scoring 52 goals in 53 games. However, a run of just one goal in 8 games at the end of the season may have swayed the voting in Messi's favour. The award will be held in Paris on October 30, 2023. What you need to know about the Nigeria Super Eagles final AFCONQ2023 clash against Sao Tome and Principe. Nigeria will wrap things up in the 2023 Total Energies AFCON Qualifiers with a home clash against Sao Tome and Principe. This weekend, the Super Eagles host their counterparts from Sao Tome, the Falcons and True Parrots, in the beautiful city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The encounter will be the second match at this level between both nations after the first at Agadir, Morocco, in the summer of 2022. Nigeria vs Sao Tome and Principe Jose Peseiro will be eager to see his boys impress in the final game of the AFCONQ2023 against a side they are expected to beat. Sao Tome and Principe had nowhere to hide the first and last time they faced the Super Eagles. Nigeria’s Super Eagles proved too good on the day following a record-breaking 10-0 thrashing in what was the second win of the campaign. The Eagles were inspired by SSC Napoli hero, Victor Osimhen, who was involved in six of the goals as he scored four and assisted two more. That heavy win saw Nigeria record its biggest-ever win en route picking one of two tickets for the tournament slated for Ivory Coast next year. With the ticket now sealed for Nigeria, coach Peseiro will be hoping for another good outing against the True Parrots to help ease what has been a difficult period for him and his employers, the NFF. While Nigeria has secured a place in the tournament proper, there is little matter of who finishes as group winners. The Super Eagles are in a head-to-head battle with Guinea–Bissau for the race to win Group A. Both sides go into the final round of matches separated by just two points, with Nigeria top of the Group with 12 points from a possible 15. Nigeria Super Eagles and their Guinea-Bissau counterparts are both at home this weekend and it will be interesting to see who finishes at the top of Group A. Nigeria takes on Sao Tome while Guinea-Bissau hosts a stubborn Sierra Leone side. Time and Where to Watch Nigeria vs Sao Tome Nigeria’s final match against Sao Tome is slated for the magnificent Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Texts, photos, and videos of alleged abuse by Manchester United winger Antony have been shared with Brazilian media showing deep cuts, bruises, threats, and witnesses Manchester United’s woes continue off-field after their loss to Arsenal as explicit details and evidence of alleged abuse by Brazilian winger Antony Matheus dos Santos aka Antony on his then-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin while she was pregnant. Another Manchester United winger accused of domestic violence Gabriela Cavallin filed a second report against Antony with the Manchester Police and accused the 23-year-old forward of violently attacking her and threatening her life while she was pregnant with a child which she eventually lost after 16 weeks. In an interview with Brazilian outlet UOL, she detailed abuse suffered at Antony’s hands including an incident where a glass thrown by the footballer caused a cut so deep that her bone was exposed. The DJ and influencer said she had suffered abuse from Antony starting in July 2022, a month before he signed for Manchester United from Ajax, and noted that the couple's problems were down to the Premier League star’s jealousy. Speaking in the interview, Cavallin recalled the first time that Antony allegedly attacked her in a car and threatened to throw her out of a moving vehicle while she was pregnant, saying, "He said that if I didn't stay with him, I wouldn't stay with anyone. I told him that I was pregnant, that he was scaring me, making my heart race. I was shaking with fear." That incident was allegedly caused by a video of Cavallin in a nightclub and reportedly sparked a series of events that caused the influencer to fear for her life. Brazilian publication reveals evidence of alleged abuse by Antony Screenshots of texts and audio recordings obtained by UOL also show alleged correspondence between Antony and Cavallin, where the Manchester United star accused his then-girlfriend of ridiculing him and trying to destroy his life, while other messages were of the Brazil international apologising for unbecoming behaviour. Another text screenshot allegedly shows Antony upset at Cavallin for liking and commenting on pictures of the 23-year-old’s international teammate Neymar even though the pictures were from years before. Despite the turbulence, the two resumed their relationship after Antony returned from representing Brazil at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but things got worse from then on. Cavallin outlined further abuse by the Brazilian winger that caused serious bodily injury, including a confrontation where she alleges that Antony punched her in the chest so hard that it shifted her breast implants. She testified saying, “I don't remember exactly who the fight was, but it was someone I had stayed with years ago. He punched me in the chest and my silicone turned. And then I came to Brazil to operate. “I had to change the prosthesis. He said 'I didn't want to hurt you, it was unintentional, it wasn't a punch, I just pushed you, I just held you on the wall.’” Antony’s ex-Girlfriend relives final incident of alleged abuse In another reported altercation, Cavallin recollected being afraid for her life and deciding to quit the relationship after the last incident on May 8th, 2023 that left her with a deep cut on her hand. She was quoted by UOL as saying, "I knew I had to leave, but I couldn't. I liked him a lot. I had a lot of hope. I was very attached to the beginning of our relationship, to the things he was to me in the beginning. On that last day it was very serious. “I was really scared that I wouldn't be able to get out of the house. Antony locked the door of the house and wouldn't let me leave, and I had my finger open, all hurt. He broke my things, took my passport." According to Cavallin’s testimony, Antony allegedly tried to hit her on the head with a glass bowl but she blocked the attack with her hand, causing cuts deep enough to expose the bones in her fingers. The Manchester United winger reportedly had to be restrained by his mother and step-father in order for Cavallin to escape without further harm. “His mother and his stepfather even arrested him inside the football court, he had a football court inside the living room, surrounded by a railing, like this, as if it were a still. “He upset, trying to get out of the court anyway, playing soccer ball at me, playing cell phone at me. He said he was going to kill me, that he was going to kill himself,” recalled Cavallin. Antony maintains innocence amid assault allegations So far, Antony remains defiant in his stance about being falsely accused by Cavallin and in addition to a statement on his Instagram account where he stated his belief that his “innocence will be proven,” also had another statement put out on his behalf to UOL. The statement by Antony’s representatives to the Brazilian news outlet stated, "What can be observed is that it appears in the media always in the moments when she knows it can harm Antony. “As on the day of the call for the Brazilian team and now at the time of the presentation. But the facts exposed are the same as those being dealt with in the investigative process." Antony is currently being investigated for the alleged offences, and the new publication will have Manchester United worried after they recently had to ship English forward Mason Greenwood to Getafe to avoid media scrutiny after his own case of alleged domestic abuse. €200m will only be enough to buy one of Victor Osimhen’s feet according to an email allegedly sent by Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis Napoli President Aurelio de Laurentiis will reportedly ask for an astronomical fee to part ways with star striker Victor Osimhen if Saudi Arabian clubs return for the Super Eagles striker’s signature. Napoli reject Al Hilal’s advances for Osimhen Osimhen was the subject of a massive bid from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal this summer, with the club reportedly ready to offer Napoli up to €200 million for the Nigerian forward. Napoli rejected all formal bids for Osimhen however, with de Laurentiis unwilling to sell the Nigerian forward despite the huge bids from Al Hilal. In a report from L’Equipe, the Napoli president allegedly told Al Hilal in an email, “Your bid can only buy one of Osimhen’s foot [sic]” in defiance of the money the Saudi club were willing to pay for the 2022/23 Serie A top scorer. Napoli president sets new price tag De Laurentiis is also reportedly set to shun future bids for Osimhen, as he stated in the supposed email that he would only think of considering a bid for Osimhen above €500 million. The Partenopei president reportedly said, For next year, I expect you’ll be able to table €500m and maybe we’ll entertain your offer, but I say again, ‘maybe'.” Osimhen is one of Napoli’s most coveted players after finishing the 2022/23 Serie A season with 26 goals to help the Partenopei claim their first Scudetto in 33 years and the club has made it clear on several occasions that they would do all it takes to keep the Nigerian striker with them. Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has found a new home in Getafe but faces more problems with calls for the Madrid-based side to send him back. Mason Greenwood’s hope of relaunching his career has faced another setback following calls for his new club to send him back. Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood found a place to call home after a loan move to LALIGA side Getafe. Greenwood joined the Spanish side on deadline day after United and Getafe confirmed the transfer on social media as reported by Pulse Sports. Case against Greenwood The forward was charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling/coercive behaviour after clips and pictures were posted online by his girlfriend. In February this year, however, the charges were dropped after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) claimed they had a duty to stop the case following the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light. Despite the CPS dropping the case, that was not the end of the issue for the 21-year-old who remained suspended at hos Premier League club. The Reds opened an internal investigation on the case and released their findings six months later through a statement that they would be parting ways amicably with the forward. Domestic abuse foundation messages Getafe Greenwood was told by United to rebuild his career outside the club and after weeks of rumours, the youngster finally found a new home at Getafe. The Madrid side and their fans celebrated the arrival of the talented forward but their dream of watching him play for their club has received a major setback following calls to send him back. According to a report by Mirror, the Madrid-based domestic abuse foundation wants to see Greenwood sent back to Old Trafford. “The club is setting a terrible example,” Ana Bella Estévez, of the Ana Bella Foundation, was quoted to have said. “Getafe executives should never have hired Mason Greenwood and should immediately overturn their decision.” “If you’re a public-facing organisation like Getafe there is no excuse to take a neutral stance on violence against women - you must take moral responsibility,” she added.
