likeme: Everyone in the IT industry is well aware of how rapid technology changes and will most likely be ready for any change no matter how drastic it is. In my opinion, as long as the cloud exists, these companies will continue to bloom. Most of them even have ties with the major public cloud providers, this is because of the services they provide aside selling hardware. IBM is also a public cloud provider. The private cloud space is still very much alive and these companies are seriously exploiting it. They sell hardware (compute, network, storage) and cloud management solutions to enterprises who still have a need for private cloud. Mind you, this is only a fraction of what they do. HP recently restructured, bought simplivity and nimble storage, probably because they also want a share of the hyper converged infrastructure (HCI) market. They're also a major contributor to the Openstack project, even though they recently sold that division. Their enterprise division also merged with another company to form a much bigger IT service company, dxc technology. Dell acquired EMC, so they also own VMware and other companies under EMC. IBM acquired Softlayer which isn't doing that bad. They also have bluemix, their PaaS offering and have also invested heavily in big data, machine learning, IoT and AI with IBM Watson. Hope you're beginning to see the trend? These are companies who live by the mantra "Innovate or die" 2 Likes |

Skywalker5: I'm currently preparing for the VCP foundations exam before I then go ahead with the actual VCP6-DCV certification exam. Technology moves so fast, now vSphere 6.5 is out. Whew! In the area of private cloud, Openstack is my platform of choice and I hope to still do a PoC on it before the year runs out. In the public cloud space, IMO, Nigeria is still a bit backwards in the pay as you use model of the public cloud. Asides SaaS, they still prefer an on premise solution because they want to avoid the recurring payment model. The benefits of shifting from capital to operating expenditure model is yet to be understood fully. As soon as this is realised, I foresee more companies jumping to the cloud. AWS is my platform of choice for the public cloud. I read that some organisations now run their entire IT department from the cloud though I might not agree to doing that for now. |

Whats up with everyone We are already in Q2 2016. How's everyone's plan going? For me, I spent the whole of Q1 on vRealize suite&vSphere, implementing a private cloud with disastr recovery using Site Recovery Manager. Though I was only actively involved in the vSphere & SRM part. In my opinion, vRealize suite still has a lot of catch up to do in the private cloud space when compared to other competitors like Cloudstack and Openstack(Baba o). I wish i had the time to do more in Q1. Next up is network virtualization with vmware's NSX. This might take Q2 and Q3 as i'll have to go back to learning some core routing and switching concepts Is anyone having a look at NFV?(Network Functions Virtualization) From what i've seen/read so far, the concept looks pretty interesting but I think its more suited for Service Providers/Telcos. Who knows, maybe when Nigeria is ripe for such technologies, one can be a consultant for all these Telecom companies. |
Jokes Etc / Job Recruitment Ad By A Company With A Funny Name by Tunee(m): 4:52pm On Apr 30, 2016 |
I came across this interesting looking job recruitment ad today. The company name bears a striking resemblance to a famous blogger's name... Kudos to the person who came up with this name, I couldn't resist the urge to go back and take a picture of the ad.

Safari29: To add to what ptoall1000 said, VMware and Virtualbox are not the same. VMware workstation is a hosted hypervisor that runs on client operating systems. Virtual box also runs on client operating systems too and its free. If you want to setup a home lab for MCSA, i'll advise you use Microsoft's Hyper-V. It comes free with windows 8,8.1 and windows 10. The reason why you should consider this is that part of the exam objectives of MCSA require you to know how to install and configure Hyper-V(google 70-410 exam objectives). So I think it makes sense if you build your lab on Hyper-V though personally, I would go with VMware workstation. You can turn on Hyper-V under windows features, just ensure that virtualization is enabled on your BIOS. 1 Like |

Skywalker5: Only very few organisations that I know of are looking towards IaaS. I'm thinking banks should also be looking towards using cloud computing ( IaaS or PaaS) Talking about Hyper-v and system Center, it's a great product but as it stands, vSphere is still the data centre virtualization product to beat. Its ease of management and its sheer amount of features is unrivalled. This might not last long though as competitors are getting stronger every year. I think system Center 2016 will be a major improvement over 2012 The disadvantage of vSphere and other VMware products is the pricing. It's usually priced higher than its counterparts though one can say the price is justifiable because it's a great product. I heard System Center 2016 will now be licenced per core which will make it more expensive too. I've never heard of anyone or organisation using KVM in Nigeria but I'm sure there will be quite a few of them. It's open source and I think it's still free even after RedHat acquired them. It's not as easy to manage compared to Hyper-V , ESXi or even Xen but it's gaining ground and its the de-facto hypervisor for most open source CMPs . |
Computers / Re: Thread For Infrastructure, Networks, Virtualisation And Cloud Computing by Tunee(m): 8:38am On Jan 16, 2016 |
Skywalker5: I'm currently working on vRealize suite, Vmware's equivalent of System Center. It's actually a project for an educational institution here in Nigeria. It's a private cloud offering but it's intended to be accessible by others from the public(like a public-private cloud ).SRM is also included. It's been challenging and fun so far. Next I intend exploring more into SDN with VMware NSX and also openstack networking (neutron). I've fallen in love with openstack and its huge potential ever since I deployed it in my lab. I want to learn more about KVM hypervisor because I think it's really giving esxi a run for its money and its even becoming the standard hypervisor for open source cloud management platforms. Would have loved to delve into system Center but presently I work in a vSphere environment. |

Which kind of networking do you use?I use bridged network and I assign a static IP to my VMs.I don't think windows 10 stops your vm from accessing the Internet. |

kode12:"AD DS is installed and nothing else " uninstall AD DS, remove and then rejoin the server to the domain again. Then redo the installation again but this time make sure that: 1. All the prerequisites such as password complexities etc are met 2. All other domain controllers in the network are reachable as the PDC(primary domain controller) will have to be contacted before installation can continue. Whenever you try to promote a server to a domain controller on server 2008 and you encounter issues, it's better you uninstall AD DS and remove from domain because some of the AD DS binaries are already installed on the server,if u continue with the installation you might encounter issues. Windows server 2012 has addressed most of these issues by doing a prerequisite check for you before proceeding with the installation. You should also check the installation logs just as kishimi suggested. Cheers |

kishimi8:i'm also considering upgrading to a better laptop. I'm currently contemplating whether to max out my current laptop to 16gb or upgrade to one which can support a total of 32Gb as 32Gb will give me more room to try out some technologies before deploying on Production hardware. Which laptop are you looking into at the moment?i'm looking at the Dell precision Series. Desktops are more cost effective but they cant be carried around |

kode12:I'm assuming you are using VMware Workstation Have you verified that all the Virtual machines are using the same network adapter settings?e,g if you are using Host-only make sure other VMs are also on host only. Secondly, the reason why the second guest os could not ping back might be due to a firewall issue. Try turning on file sharing on all the guest OS.Better still, you can completely turn off the firewall on each host. Lastly, do you intend making the VMs connect to the external network? If yes, is it through cable or wifi?If its through cable, Bridged networking works well for me but if its through wifi, host only works for me with some little tweaks. |

Skywalker5: I am also interested in managed services (though i'm a beginner in IT) but the technology adoption in Nigeria is low. From the little i've read about managed services, they mostly provide services to SMBs but here in Nigeria, SMBs can't afford to invest in IT infrastructure. The few MSPs that i know in Nigeria support Banks, Telecom companies and the likes. From my own assessment, the demand for managed services is quite low at the moment but i'm pretty optimistic the situation will improve soon |

Whats up with the Vmware study group. I contacted the op but his number is not going through. I guess everyone has parted ways I would like the group to be resurrected, whoever's interested should comment. The programming guys are faring much better; I went to a place in Abuja, Enspire incubator.its a nice place but its majorly for programmers/developers. They come together to share ideas, work on projects and also network. Hopefully one day there might be a group like that for Sysadmins/Ops, Virtualization/cloud infrastructure architects. I think its easier for the developers because they don't really need much to start up a group unlike others who need some form of infrastructure setup(Servers, storage, networks, etc). There are only two active people in this thread;that sums up how interested people are in VMware technologies. Even the Cisco threads are doing much better . Pls let us share our opinions/suggestions on how to keep this thread alive |
