Firefire:. Prove it that all |
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has told the People Democratic Party chieftain in the state, Bode George, to steer away from politics after the latter’s defeat at the last general election. In a statement issued Thursday in response to Mr. George’s call for President Muhammadu Buhari to probe Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, two past governors of the state, the APC said that Mr. George and the Lagos PDP had just woken up from a “chronic hallucination” after their defeat by the APC. “Bode George is yet to come to terms that it is all over for PDP in Nigeria and Lagos. He is yet to believe that Lagos APC has forcefully retired him from active politics for ever in Nigeria and Lagos State,” the APC said in the statement by Joe Igbokwe, the state Publicity Secretary. “Why is Bode George finding it difficult to believe that the game is over for him in Nigeria politics talk less of Lagos State? “Who will tell Bode George that nobody takes him serious again in matters of Nigerian politics? Who will persuade Chief Bode George to quit politics now in his own interest?” On Wednesday, Mr. George had accused Mr. Tinubu of complicity in the recent allegations of misappropriation of state funds by Mr. Fashola during his administration. The PDP chieftain questioned some of the contracts awarded during Mr. Fashola’s tenure including the N78 million website upgrade, the N29 billion Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, and N1.5 billion spent on pedestrian bridges across the state. “And there are so many of these screaming illegalities observable in the record of our poster boy of yesterday,” said Mr. George. “In a more just society, Mr. Fashola should be facing a comprehensive investigation rather than being considered for any appointment at all.” While calling on President Buhari to probe Mr. Fashola, Mr. George said that “Tinubu should not be far behind” at the “interrogation centre.” But the APC responded angrily accusing Mr. George of looting the Nigerian Ports Authority as well as his party’s funds and calling him a “jailbird”. “What is giving Bode George the courage to believe that President Buhari will probe Asiwaju BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) and Fashola, who are the real drivers of change in Nigeria because a Bode George said so?” Mr. Igbokwe asked. “How can a jail bird who plundered and looted NPA, and who just got pardoned the other day because of 2015 elections forget easily that he is part of the problem of Nigeria and not part of the solution? Did Bode George know that his case at NPA and the fraudulent amnesty granted by the former President may be revisited? “How can we forget that Chief George imposed Jimi Agbaje on Lagos PDP and caused a big crisis at Oregun Lagos where the party conducted its primaries? How can we forget that Chief Bode George kept the funds meant for his party campaigns in Lagos knowing fully well that there is no road to where he is going? “How can we forget that it was this same Bode George that initiated the political brigandage and ethnic politics we saw in Lagos that nearly caused xenophobic attacks?” The APC further stated that President Buhari has “full knowledge” of Mr. George’s “dubious activities” during the campaigns. “How can an old man who armed thugs all over Lagos with an instruction to kill if necessary in order to steal Lagos be the one that will tell President Buhari what to do? “Chief Bode George spoke about the cost of projects in Lagos, but the question is this: what does a hut builder know about Lekki-Ikoyi bridge? What does this carpenter know about gold? What does this failed politician know about good governance and service delivery?” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/188733-buhari-wont-probe-tinubu-fashola-because-bode-wants-him-to-apc.html |

Ibrahim Baba on Tuesday retired as the Post Master General of the Federation from the Nigeria Postal Service. Baba told journalists in Abuja that non-usage of postage stamps by financial institutions made the country to lose N1 trillion every year. Baba stated that NIPOST, under his leadership, was able to intercept 258,207 scam mails worth N125.2 billion between 2006 and 2014. “NIPOST was able to intercept the fraudulent documents through collaboration with security agencies like the Nigeria Police and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,” he said. He added that NIPOST also collaborated with the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, the Department of State Service, the Nigerian Customs Service and the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom. Advertisement According to him, ICT is not a threat to NIPOST but rather a blessing as it is impacting positively on postal operations and services. Baba said: “Our desire to make the post office a one-stop shop motivated us to adopt new technologies to enhance postal operations in terms of speed and efficiency in service delivery. “It is also a means of capturing new business opportunities provided by e-commerce and other electronic and financial services.” Baba added that 70 per cent of post offices across the country had been equipped with ICT facilities, including track and trace features. http://www.today.ng/news/08198265-ibrahim-baba-retires-as-post-master-general/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

A committee has been set up by the Federal Government saddled with the responsibility of recovering government property from former government officials. Sources close to the Presidency have revealed that a number of former government officials are still in possession of vehicles, buildings, generator sets and other entitlements that came with their previous positions. According to the sources, in spite vacating their various offices almost three months ago, many are yet to return these government properties. To this effect, government has set up a committee made up of civil servants and security agents to recover the unreturned public assets from the political office holders, who had left office. During a chat with some newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the situation. “That is precisely the case, even here at the Villa, there are cars and other property belonging to the government which are yet to be returned.” According to him, the Buhari’s administration will soon begin to demand for the return of these assets. He stressed that the aim was not to embarrass anyone but to return the properties to government. “The properties belong to the Nigerian people. We are not trying to humiliate anyone by asking them to return their cars or houses,” he added. When asked whether the state and local governments were facing similar challenges with retrieving government property from their predecessors, Shehu said that he was not in a position to confirm or deny this. He, however, added that he would not be surprised if that was the case, as this attitude of holding on to government property “even after leaving office must be a natural outcome of the culture of impunity that has prevailed in Nigeria over the past years of PDP rule. “But change has come; that is why we have to do things differently now.’’ He reiterated President Buhari’s commitment to running an austere government that would save the Nigerian people millions in public funds. “Imagine how much Nigeria will save by retrieving and re-using these government properties instead of purchasing new ones for new government officials,’’ he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/return-cars-houses-generators-buhari-tells-ex-govt-officials/#sthash.qKYYGGIo.dpuf |

Cameroon will send nearly 2,500 soldiers to join a west African regional force to fight Boko Haram Islamists that will number 8,700 men, the defence minister said Friday. Nigeria`s neighbours Chad, Cameroon and Niger, which have all suffered attacks by Boko Haram, launched the force earlier this year to end a conflict that has claimed more than 15,000 lives since 2009. The group has now widened its attacks from Nigeria`s Muslim-majority north to across the country and staged cross-border killings and raids in neighbouring countries. “The president of Cameroon has authorised the deployment of 2,450 soldiers to join the multinational force,” said Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo`o, in a statement read out on national radio. The group has stepped up raids on Cameroon recently staging bombings, killings and burning homes before fleeing across the border to Nigeria. The multinational force is headquartered in the Chadian capital Ndjamena. It is expected to deploy imminently. Benin, which also neighbours Nigeria, has pledged 800 soldiers for the force. http://www.today.ng/news/08157273-cameroon-to-send-2500-soldiers-for-regional-force-against-boko-haram/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter
