HealthWhy Are We Still Eating White Bread? by turigee1(op): 6:29pm On Jan 19, 2013
Here is a question for the gluten-tolerant of the group: Are you white or wheat? About a half century ago the vast majority of Americans ate white bread on a regular basis, and wheat bread was considered vastly inferior and undesirable.

While Americans have developed an appreciation for the nutritional aspects of wheat and whole grain breads, along with a budding appreciation for some of the flavours and textures that come along with unbleached, unwhite bread, we are still a nation of white bread eaters. According to the Whole Grains Council, only about 60% of Americans eat a whole-grain food (not just bread) at least once in two weeks.

Why is this? Maybe we don’t care enough about fibre intake and nutrition (this is, after all, the same nation that is largely subsisting off of energy drinks) or maybe, just maybe, there is something about the flavour of white bread that is far more alluring than anything wheat has to offer. Talk to a French baker, and they will likely tell you that a finely ground white flour is far superior to your spelt flour or mixed grain flour. Research recently conducted at the Flavour Research and Education Centre at the University of Minnesota revealed that white bread crust gave off chemicals that smell like corn chips, potatoes, caramel, and flowers, while the whole wheat produced malty, earthy, cucumber, fatty smells. Manufacturers of whole-grain items and breads know this all to well, as they are inclined to add salt and sugar to whole-grain items to mask some off flavours inherent in whole-grain foods. This does the trick, but also packs on more sodium and calories in the process.

So despite the advances made in artisan bread movement and the proliferation of whole-grain items in grocery stores, American taste buds are still partial to the flavours of white bread and white flour. Where do you stand on the white/wheat divide? Have you developed a love/tolerance for wheat and whole-grain products? Do you still prefer white to wheat?

CelebritiesFoluke Daramola- My First Sexual Intercourse Was A Raped Case by turigee1(op): 11:55am On Jan 19, 2013
Popular Nollywood actress, Foluke Daramola, takes ADEMOLA OLONILUA through the journey of her life

Why I am more into movie production than acting

I am a person that is very restless in nature. I have been acting for over 18 years. I feel that it is becoming monotonous for me; doing the same old thing over and over again, despite the fact that creativity is dropping by the day. I still do a bit of acting; it is just that I am more of a production person. I am even derailing a bit back into doing English soap operas which was what I started out from. I started with soap opera and English movies before I delved into Yoruba movies.

Competition from upcoming actors

The only thing that is constant in life is change. If you do not look beyond and think outside of the box, you are going to box yourself in the corner. What I mean by that is that there is no how you would not grow. There is this proverb that says you have to take a bow when the ovation is loudest. Taking a bow doesn’t mean leaving the scene; it means you should go and re-strategise and find ways to work around things that would make you relevant. There is no way I would say my younger colleagues should not grow. I started out when I was a teenager and I have had my fair share of the industry. I’m still having it. I’m still staying relevant. The only thing you can do is just to make yourself relevant. A threat from the younger generation is not one that relates with me. I am not one that would sit in a corner. A lot of my colleagues ask why I read so much. I just had my masters degree, I am going for my Ph.D. I believe in dynamism and upgrading myself at every point in time so nobody is a threat to me.

Journey so far

When I started I was very young. I was about 16 years and I had not entered the university for my first degree. At that time, I was a young girl who wanted to have fun and I did not see myself as anything. One thing about me is that I have had it in my sub-conscious that stardom would not change me or take anything away from me. I have had my challenges, times when I wanted to party with my friends, go to clubs, parties, go out to have fun. People see me and begin to talk. At each point in time, because I was a teenager, I might have made one or two mistakes. At the end of the day, I learnt while growing up in the industry that you do not do things like this, you just walk around them. It is just part of learning in life. I am not one person that regrets anything. I just learn from my past. Anything I have done in life, I do not wish they never happened.

My dream of becoming a lecturer

I have always wanted to be a diplomat. I have always loved to be a lecturer; that is why I’m still upgrading my education. I had a scholarship in Canada but I had to postpone my admission to take another course. It is an ongoing process.

My parents’ reaction to my career

My dad is late; I lost him when I was very young. My mum was strongly against my movie career. She felt that I would be too exposed. Later, my mentors called her, spoke to her and gave her the assurance that I would still go to school. They told her that I would still be educated and do the normal things people do. She grudgingly agreed but I’m sure she has not regretted it so far. I sneaked to location several times after she said I should not go. There was a time she had to shave my head because I sneaked to location. I thought I would be back home that day but I did not get to our house until 2am. She was really worried; immediately she saw me, she picked a pair of scissors and shaved my head. I had to put relaxer on my hair to make it look like rough curls. Later, when she saw that I was determined and dogged about it, she allowed me. She just made me to sign an undertaking that I was going to go to school. She is an educationist so I had to sign and give her the assurance that I was going to go to school.

My first crush

I would say that my first crush was my first relationship. I was about 17 years old then. Unfortunately, he was not the first person I had sex with. I share it with the younger generation because it is something that has been talked about but I have got over it. The first time I had sex, I was raped. I had my first relationship with the first person I had a crush on, Seun Olomofe. He is one of the most caring and considerate persons I have ever met in my life. He was my mother’s close friend’s son. He was one person that showed me so much love. He was always there for me; he was the first person to ever make me a special card. I had a huge crush on him. When sex was not coming to play in the relationship, he said he was tired and I was so heart-broken. I was supposed to go to University of Lagos; it was because of him I changed my admission to Obafemi Awolowo University. I saw him as an epitome of the kind of person I would like to spend the rest of my life with. That was the first major crush that I had.

My first sexual encounter

My first introduction to sex was rape. It was with one of our tenants. I got so close to him and saw him as an elder brother. He looked at me as someone that had been exposed because I was busty and he thought I had had a sexual experience before. So he had his way with me. Then it was not something you tell the whole world. People said we should keep quiet about it. Then they tried to make trouble with him but subsequently people said we should keep quiet about it. We had to try and manage it in our own way even though it affected me for a long time psychologically. I had to gradually get over it. I believed so much in the principle of keeping your virginity till you are married. I started showbiz from Teen TV on DBN with Chichi Okaro. Then I used to be so vocal and when we spoke about pre-marital sex and virginity, I was always so passionate about it. It was such a disadvantage and a pity for me.

My experience as a busty lady

At the initial stage, I used to be so ashamed of myself. At that time, I would wear clothes that would not let my bust be noticeable. I was trying everything I could so that it would not be obvious. Subsequently, when I started acting and reading books, I read a book that said the best admirer you have is yourself and the way you carry yourself is how people would take you. I had to psyche myself to love it. After I did so, I noticed that I was getting advances even from people I didn’t expect, like some of my late father’s friends. Being a deep thinker, I always look at the advantage of everything, I saw that it was something I could not change so I had to make the best out of it. I got it into my sub-conscious that it was a plus than minus. I have had reasons to talk to a lot of people that are busty and who do not appreciate themselves. They now see it as an asset than a liability.

Errors in subtitles of Yoruba movies

The reason why that occurs is because we all want to be a jack of all trades and master of none. The few people that are educated know that there are supposed to be professionals for everything .The ones that are not believe that because they have a popular face, they are already stars and can do anything and get away with it. It’s partly the reason I reduced acting because it was already becoming a mess. If you know you are good at acting and you are a popular face, it does not mean you know it all. Some people are perfect for some jobs but because they want to cut corners and believe they can do it better than the next person, they make a mess of it.

My recent project

I am working on my latest project called Cobwebs. It is a cinema-bound movie. We take our movies to the cinema because we are expanding our scope. Home videos are giving us a lot of problems. So we have decided to do something else that would expand our network. We are shooting that. We are planning on featuring Femi Kuti in the movie. We are still talking with him. I know he doesn’t act but if I can get him, it would be a big break.

HealthWEIRD: Stunned Parents Pull Feather Out Of Baby’s Neck, Thought It Was A Pimple by turigee1(op): 10:34pm On Jan 14, 2013
A seven-month-old girl was taken to the hospital by concerned parents after an area just below her jaw swelled up to the size of one and a half golf balls with a pimple on top.
After initially diagnosing an infection, doctors were shocked when they discovered a two-inch-long black feather had got lodged underneath Mya Whittington’s skin.
Aaron and Emma Whittington first took their nearly seven-month-old daughter to Hutchinson Regional Medical Centre, Kansas, USA on Saturday after the area below her jaw swelled up. ‘They thought it was a swollen gland,’ Aaron Whittington said.

The hospital administered an antibiotic and sent the family home.
Mya’s grandmother took her back to the hospital after a ‘pimple’ appeared on the swollen area, which had now grown to the size of about one and a half golf balls, Aaron Whittington said.

The physician suspected a staph infection on her lymph nodes.
A doctor broke the pimple to try to drain it and drew marks on her face to measure whether the swelling increased. The intravenous antibiotics were continued.

On Monday, the doctor on rounds scraped off a scab that formed. After the doctor left, the Whittingtons noted what appeared to be a string or stick emerging from the spot. They left it alone, since the doctor hadn’t done anything to it, Aaron said.

‘She’s been pulling on the left side of her face for a couple of months,’ Emma said, but she suspected it was teething or an ear infection.
In her 20 years on the paediatric floor at the hospital, RN Sandra Mathis has never seen the like, though she recalls a child coming in once with hairbrush bristles stuck in its tonsils that had to be removed, from chewing on a brush.
The Whittingtons’ doctor indicated the swelling had to be causing an immense amount of pain, Emma said, but Mya cried mostly only when nurses have poked her.

Her ordeal isn’t over yet, however. The swollen area has a hard knot in it about four centimetres in size. If the knot doesn’t break up on its own, Mya is headed for surgery in Wichita to remove it.

RomanceYvonne Nelson Search For Another Love After Being Dumped By Iyanya? by turigee1(op): 7:44pm On Jan 07, 2013
Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson may have got over her relationship woes with emerging Nigerian singer, Iyanya Mbuk after the latter dumped her recently. While both were trailed with romance tales, Yvonne denied any hot romance going on between her and Iyanya.

The cat was let out of the bag when the Calabar-born singer relieved Yvonne of her place in his heart.

An embittered Yvonne then took her fight to twitter to pour out her mind and accuse Iyanya of being a player; "all I want is your waist, a part of Iyanya's latest single where he mentioned Yvonne's name more than any other celeb mentioned in that song 'Your Waist'.

A picture of Yvonne in hot bikini has gone online now. Though looking slimmer, Yvonne looked hot and sexy in the bikini.

Questions being asked now is if Yvonne is on a serious search for another guy who wants her waist or not?

While some said Tiwa has something to do romantically with Marvin Records boss and respected music producer, Don Jazzy, others said it's not actually Don Jazzy that is making the butterfly inside Tiwa to flutter but another member of the Marvin crew, medical doctor turned musician, Dr Sid.

It has however been discovered that neither of these ‘able bachelors’ are actually the men after Tiwa’s heart, not even with a pole closeness.

We can reveal to you for free that Tiwa is said to be having a romantic affair with her manager. According to the source who dropped this gist, what has now metamorphosed into a romantic relationship started as a working relationship but later developed into romance.

T Billion as the manager is referred to, is said to have been dating Tiwa for about two years now. Before the guy started dating Tiwa, he was once romantically linked to popular actress, Annie Macaulay now Annie Idibia. Annie and the guy were said to have dated each other years back when Annie’s relationship with Tu Face crashed and she vowed not to have anything to do with him again until they later reconciled.

It was however gathered that the duo took time out to cement their relationship shortly before the end of 2012.

CelebritiesHelicopter Crash: Ramsey Noah, Timi Dakolo Lie by turigee1(op): 2:06pm On Jan 06, 2013
The Navy helicopter that crashed claiming the lives of prominent personalities, late General Owoeye Azazi and Gov. Patrick Yakowa might have become a forgone issue but not when someone has just pick a hole in the statement made by actor, Ramsey Nouah and Timi Dakolo, a singer.

It is however, interesting to note that neither Noah nor Dakolo’s name was on the flight manifest. It is unclear how the two artistes intend to justify their claims in the face of stark reality that they weren’t in any way connected to the flight in which the late statesmen were airlifted. Given that the lust for fame is a powerful aphrodisiac, it is understandable that Noah and Dakolo would be desperate for publicity of any kind, but for them to seek acclaim and media mention off the misfortune and demise of a towering statesman smack of ruthlessness and unforgivable shallowness unbecoming of public figures.

According to an insider, “It’s unfortunate that whenever there is a mishap of this nature in the country, people often emerge to give narrow-escape testimonies, most of these, nobody can confirm. Most of them are attention seekers, and pathological liars. I saw that helicopter on that day, only twice. The first time, it came to pick, yet again, a 5-star General, it must have been then, Azazi called for the helicopter to pick him. The second time I saw it, it came to pick Azazi. The information minister had departed the venue over an hour before the Navy helicopter came for Azazi. Governor Yakowa decided to fly with Azazi, ditching his private arrangement before he and others met their death.

It’s laughable that a struggling singer, Dakolo, who was billed to perform at a time, long after General Azazi had departed the event also claimed that “God saved him”. Saved him how? Is he a General? Is he Azazi or Yakowa’s aide? In what capacity was he supposed to fly with Azazi that ‘God saved him’?”

Romance“should I Tell My Sister I Slept With Her Fiancee?” – Lady Seeks Help by turigee1(op):
During my wild days in the university nine years ago I had a brief fling with a guy I met through a friend. We had sex a few times and saw each other for about a month before we lost touch.

Fast forward eight years later; my immediate younger sister introduced this same guy to me as her boyfriend. I was hoping they would break up so he wouldn’t be an issue between my sister and I but that didn’t happen.

A year later, they are getting married. Their wedding is actually Saturday January 12, 2013. There’s serious friction between the guy and I as we can’t even look at each other or talk directly to each other.

I have been avoiding him since he hooked up with my sister but now that they are about to be married, I’m stuck.

Should I tell my sister what happened between us or leave things the way they are? Does she have a right to know?
I’m confused. Pls help!!!

CelebritiesGenevieve And I Are In Good Terms—omotola by turigee1(op): 11:58am On Jan 01, 2013
Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has again reinstated that she has no personal beef against her ‘perceived’ arch rival in the film industry. Omo T, as her fans call her, declared this while answering questions from her fans on twitter yesterday.

Even though Omotola and Genevieve have not openly been in some kind of public fight with each other, many assume that the two ‘elephants’ in Nollywood are rivals to each other. But interestingly, they are the only two ‘rivals’ that have acted together in movies as sisters compared with other rivals in Nollywood especially since such rivalry is made known to the public.

”To be honest, do you have any personal beef with Genny? If no, what’s your relationship like?” a fan asked Omotola. In a rather simple response, Omotola replied, ”lol, cool.”

It is believed that the rivalry between the two is based on achievement, fan base and others made by them.

Music/RadioStyl Plus Finally Broke-up by turigee1(op): 11:40am On Jan 01, 2013
The once popular R&B group Styl Plus make up of Shifi Omoefe, Zeal Onyecheme and Tunde Akinsanmi have finally broken up to pursue solo careers.

Tunde has made his debut as a solo artiste with the single, ‘In Your Eyes’ and has changed his stage name to Native Boy. He has also established his own record label, B.A.T Records.

Styl Plus was one of the hit-makers in the Nigerian music scene in 2003 when they released two monster hits, Olufunmi and Runaway.

It was said that the move to go in different directions was first made by Zeal, who was frustrated by the group’s inability to maintain the standard it created in 2003. He is expected to hit the airwaves with his solo effort next year.

“Zeal is already talking to a big Nigerian music star about the possibility of being signed to his label. He is frustrated like the other members, but he is the one who is making the move to start a solo career,” a source said.

The group’s 11-track debut album, ‘Expressions’ was released in February 2006, but only two cuts, ‘Imagine That’ and ‘Iya Basira’ were hits. Later, there were speculations that Styl Plus was on the verge of breaking up, but they debunked it in a follow up single, ‘Four Years.’

Shifi, Tunde and Zeal first met at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in the late 90s. There, they forged a friendship and a music group that would redefine the R&B music in Nigeria was formed. They were likened to America’s Boys 2 Men.

But their slide began with their obstinate refusal to relocate to Lagos, the nerve-centre of entertainment. This would be compounded by a poor second album, ‘Back and Better’ which saw the ratings of the group drop dramatically.

Efforts to speak with members of the defunct Styl Plus proved abortive.
